Riding Mass Transit Is Like Inviting 20 Random Hitchhikers Into Your Car

Montreal Gazette: Transit users might “panic” unnecessarily if told the number and type of crimes that occur in individual métro stations, says Montreal’s police department, which is trying to keep the data secret.

  1. I feel so reassured by their statement. After all, we peasants can always trust our Lords and Masters. They only have our best interests at heart, and never put their interests first.

  2. might “panic” ?
That seems like a great reason to not publish the religion or ethnicity of those involved in crimes too.
    We wouldn’t want to offend.

  3. Simple deduction Holmes. Where ever the highest concentration of immigrants are will be the highest crime rates. I would say Black immigrants but that’s not politically correct….so I wont.

  4. Perhaps they are copying the failed EU policy of discontinuing reporting crime by profiling by obvious characteristics. They made it official government policy in the EU by sliding it in with anti racism rules. But it is not really race based. The same supra-citizen police, politician or bureaucrat warn their wife or daughter to stay away from the areas where many “youths” like to hang around. You know, the ones who feel empowered by their wahabi hate speech indoctrinators to use these filthy women for whatever they want.
Funny, how the elite know the truth when it could affect them or their families.

  5. The Canadian Justice Industry has raised to a high art, the keeping of citizens in the dark about the details and scope of serious crime in Canada.
They’ve done that to please the politicians who live on high in utopian cloud kingdoms.
They’ve decreed that being a victim of serious crime in Canada is a matter of a lottery, except you don’t have to buy a ticket though. Your government does that for you.

  6. I suspect the police don’t want these stats published because the public will start asking embarrassing questions like how come there’s so much crime in the subway and why aren’t the police doing more to stop it?
The article wasn’t very helpful. There should have been some indication of the kind of crimes we’re looking at.
I avoid the TTC whenever I can. TTC = Take The Car.

  7. Ah yes. People are stupid, they must be controlled.
Because gee, if people knew that some stations have a really high rate of crime, they might stop going to those stations! They might even (gasp!) stop using the subway altogether and buy CARS!
    This cannot be allowed.

  8. Batb, I was thinking the same thing. If the cops KNOW there’s more crime in a particular area, why aren’t they being proactive about it? (e.g. more undercover officers w/ nearby backup) Could it be they are keeping the information secret so they won’t be embarrassed?
And now that the weather’s nice, TTC for me once again means “take the cycle” – 10 x 35 minute workouts each week, plus save over $100/month. And last night’s pouring rain made the trip doubly efficient – I got my workout and shower at the same time!

  9. So the police have the same policy on reporting subway crime as the media does on reporting Liberal politician crime.
    Nice!

  10. Ah yes, the usual meme, which will elicit the usual response. Public transport, especially subway, is the most effective and usually the safest means of getting around a large densely populated urban area.
Kate, for her lack of sense, when she dies will go to Hell, this being to drive a large LARGE SUV around the inner cores of large cities. She will start off with Paris – Place de Gaulle at rush hour – Moscow for exoticism – and then maybe a good old gridlock in Manhattan. Then for comic relief, Milan. For added misery, Kate will know that her torment will end when she can find a parking spot. Har!

  11. Where ever the highest concentration of immigrants are will be the highest crime rates.
Of Canada’s thirteen Provinces and Territories, the highest concentration of immigrants is in the province of Ontario. According to the Crime Severity Index tabulated by Maclean’s it is the least dangerous province among the 13.

  12. Your version of Hell sounds very comfortable, John. Kick back in the luxurious leather seat, crank up the A/C, put some kickin’ tunes in the CD player, and lay back and enjoy the traffic jam. After all, it’s not like you have anywhere to go…
Greentards, on the other hand, get a version of Hell where they have to ride to work in the slag pits on a bicycle, uphill both ways, and the seat has been replaced with a 12″ lag screw.

  13. Kevin B, B Careful!
I drove my daughter home last night in the downpour. It’s twice as difficult to see cyclists (and pedestrians) when it’s pouring like it was because of the reflection of lights off the pavement, not to mention the darkness and not being able to detect the painted lines on the road.
I was watching really carefully, driving doubly cautiously, and still had problems seeing cyclists and pedestrians. I was really glad when I got home without having had an accident with another car, a cyclist, or a pedestrian!

  14. Funny how I took the Montreal metro thousands of times in life and never was victim or saw any crimes.

  15. Hiding said info from the public is actually illegal, unless they can prove that it would adversely effect an on-going investigation.

  16. So do ya’ think, QNDPs, that these hidden crimes are simply a means for the Montreal police to claim more in salaries, benefits, and overtime? Is it possible that these crimes don’t actually exist but that maybe the Montreal cops say they do so they can get their grimy little paws on more ca$h?
There has been a problem with corruption in Quebec, n’est-ce pas?

  17. Funny how you don’t seem to have a problem with public servants keeping you in the dark about crime in your city. If it wasn’t your sacred subway involved, would you still think keeping crime statistics -secret- is reasonable?
You should hang out with John Lewis. He thinks this is about the subway too.
