  1. I assume an MP can travel on our dime to and from his Riding as many times as is required.
But, is all other travel that can be considered as business also covered?
How did Jack Layton and Olivia Chow run up 185,000 bucks worth when their Riding is in Toronto? Plus, Chow/Layton annually ran up a half million apiece in total expenses,on top of their salaries.
And Trudeau’s only a short hop away in Montreal, but can he travel anywhere in Canada if it’s Party business?
I wonder if the rules covering MP’s travel allowances are as deliberately vague as the Senate housing rules.

  2. I think the fuss over the Senate is fueled to some degree by anti-Conservative sentiment. The viscous one-sided pile-on on Duffy is totally out of proportion with the “offense”. If this is not motivated by anti-Conservatism on the part of the press, then we should expect to see some investigation and coverage of these MP’s expenses. I won’t hold my breath, even though someone the other day indicated that Justin’s expenses were more than the PM’s in 2011.

  3. Wow. There’s quite a few in the first 20 who are just under $500,000. Goodale is nowhere near that.

  4. The Senate head has called for an audit of ALL Senate expenses which should clear the air. Interesting that the Liebels would only concur if the Commons was included. Typical BS.
I lost a lot of my faith in politics reading a book called ‘A History of Booze in Western Canada’. The people actually making and selling the booze were probably the most honest. It was NW Mounted Police, RCMP, local and federal politcans and yes Senators who were all on the take. The book only went to the end of American prohibition but the corruption endemic through police and politcans endures to this day I am sure.
The shocking aspect of our society is the high % of those who are participating in the ‘system’ for what they can directly benefit from. Left or right it makes no difference. The old ‘rice bowl’ theory I guess.

  5. I think now that the big old can of worms has been opened, lets do a complete audit on the mp’s, the senate, and all government officials.

  6. One wonders what percentage of those expenses that Trudeau has claimed were for him to deliver his paid speeches around the country?

  7. You mean the senate and commons members weren’t already subjected to an audit. This should have been an automatic process since confederation.

  8. Putting any dislike aside, Trudeau’s is less than many and $70,000. some less than Bob Rae.
I must visit my MP to see what his living accommodations are as he’s a few thousand more than many of them. Hmmm.
This link needs to be widespread as we now know what we need here in Canada is some of Obama’s transparency.

  9. How about some $$$ figures on what dear ole Mothercorp CBC is spending on travel, hotels, meals and just what their glass of orange is costing the TAXPAYERS of Canada!
    Oh that’s right…it’s a secret ….shush.

  10. The Glengarrian……… Fantastic idea. Any time someone mention Duffy, let ask about opening CBC books.

  11. Just like the Wheat Board Glengarrian, good luck with that one. Liberals are like starving Holstein calves on the teat and just as voracious when someone questions their consumption from that said money teat. Time for Harper to show he still might be a Conservative and open some books on the sacred money cows of Canada, it would be quite interesting to see the amount of money flow to the Laurentian elites, the incestuous liberal bastards will scream so loud from Ontario it will echo off our Rockies.

  12. My MP spent 2/3 on travel that Ralph does, and his riding is much larger and 3 hours away from a large airport (Rob Clarke).
Niki Ashton spent about 1/2 on travel than Ralph does, and her riding she has to charter planes into.
Bob Zimmer (Northern BC) spends 3/4 on travel, and his trips home would also have to be via Vancouver on a regional airline.
Ralph, is right beside an airport receiving daily flights from across Canada.
Ed Komarnicki spends 1/6 of what Ralph spends on and his riding is adjacent to Ralph’s.
To put into perspective, at regular rates, Ralph would have taken the equivalent of approximately 320 flights from Regina to Ottawa during that 1 year period (based on flying Air Canada at $500 per flight).
I think it’s time that politicians started treating themselves like normal citizens, and that includes flight with the riff-raff.

  13. Oh,one more thing, most MP’s consider Friday as travel day,so they don’t have to book last minute flights. They don’t have to get to the airport two hours prior to departure.
    They are special.
They just have to wake up in Ottawa, claim their ‘per diem’ and they are on their way.
Parasites, just simple parasites, and they come in all colours, and we pay for them all.

  14. Yes, that would be the same R Goodale I saw on TV the other night pontificating at length about the shortcomings of the Conservatives and their handling of the Senate scandal.
