University!Security guards seize ‘free speech wall’ at Queen’s University
39 Replies to “What’s The Opposite Of Diversity?”
Things have really changed since I was in university (Late 60’s & Early 70’s). Discussions were lively and diverse, we would consider the merits of every ones opinions and every viewpoint was explored. Now it seems everybody expresses their individuality by agreeing with the consensus. I have never managed to stay inside the box and have colored outside the lines all my life, still do.
Times have changed. The universities have become Marxist training centres.
Don’t talk about “right to life” on canadian university campus’ or you’ll be shot.
Now that we have medical students at our interior BC hospital, there was a push to get anyone who teaches them to become UBC clinical faculty. In order to do so, one has to agree with UBC’s ideology which, when I started reading it, I found it hard to resist the temptation to put my fist through the laptop screen. The UBC faculty guidelines were full of crap like “we believe in free speech except it it happens to be . . . “. Needless to say I’m not a member of the UBC clinical faculty and have no intention of ever being associated in any manner with a university until universities end their love affair with totalitarianism and political correctness.
What’s more worrisome is that my form for renewal of my hospital privileges had new policies I was to agree with this year. On closer reading it would require me to be in agreement with the BC human rights act. Did a lot of crossing out of offensive sections and will see what happens. Have already told the head of the department my objections to agreeing to such totalitarian crap. Will be interesting to see at what point needing to agree to a statist agenda becomes more important than retaining physicians in a hospital where there is already a severe shortage of physicians with hospital privileges.
Agree 100%,Loki,but we must be careful. All the leftards have to do is bring in a bunch of ex-KGB (sarc) with phoney doctor’s certificates, and have them take a nice,rigged,B.C.(read NDPer) compentency test, and poof. They can now practice their commie teachings in B.C.,while playing doctor on the side.
Yeah well anyone who believes that that farce with Ann Colter visiting the University of Ottawa might have an interest in a bridge. It was so blatantly University policy….
Wow, Loki. I never had to sign those things. Quite literally it was, “When do you want to start. And please promise to uphold patient confidentiality.”
Appears BC may be more twit than Ontario atm.
Loki,
Why in blazes are you still at that hospital yourself?
When British liberty is restored to British Columbia, I have no doubt any hospital in Canada will be glad to have you, once the quacks and Third World hacks who kill more patients than they save because in the old country nobody bothers to wash, and whose practices depend on political correctness are forcibly retired from the profession and sent to jail or back to the cesspits from whence they came. In the meantime, even the NDP can’t force anyone to practice medicine.
They need to be intorduced to a friendly game of broom-a-loo.
Forest, 6 years ago renewal of hospital privileges was a very simple process. Agreeing to protect patient confidentiality and getting ones discharge summaries done on time as well as not being an asshole were the main things one had to agree to. This year, for whatever reason the government of BC has decided, all BC hospitals have the same hospital privileges renewal form. I’m not the only one complaining about it. It seems that moonbats are infiltrating the hospital administrations around the province and coming up with asinine new statist policies. I’m not that worried where I currently live as there’s a major physician shortage there. However, if I was applying for hospital privileges in Vancouver, I would haved problems. Considering that I’m never moving back to the moonbat capital of Canada, it’s only a theoretical problem but if we have a communist government in BC in a couple of months then it will get interesting.
I’d estimate that probably 90% of physicians don’t even bother reading what they’re agreeing to given how busy they are. I happen to be the kind of person who reads a software license line by line and that’s why I almost exclusively use open source software. With the hospital, one would probably have to spend 1-2 weeks reading all of the referenced acts and policies that one has to agree to. If the commies form the next government, I expect they’ll start blaming doctors for high health care costs (rather than union hospital workers abusing their sick time and being grossly overpaid for what they do as well as a system in which demand for medical services is far higher than government can fund). If that’s the case I suspect that we’ll see the collapse of medicare in this province as doctors quite the system and practice private medicine.
Likely this isn’t the only example of statists attempting to bring in political correctness and totalitarian regulations in all aspects of life. When I was in university, the only thing we had to agree to was to not cheat on exams of plagiarize which was reasonable. Now, the university “codes of conduct” are something that I could never agree to. Thus far no-one has made an issue of this and it’s time that individuals who are fed up with the state trying to run their lives start fighting back.
Follow the money, boys and girls. Who’s getting it? Who’s giving it? Whose feelings are being hurt and who might discontinue giving big bucks to Queen’s if their feelings continue to be hurt?
The Bible’s got it right: It’s not money itself that’s the problem; it’s the love of money that leads to avarice and loss of freedom. ‘Looks like the Queen’s administration is well on its way to enslavement — and are dragging their students into the vortex.

If you need a Free Speech Wall, you no longer have free speech.
Loki my hat off to you for standing up against the political correctness at UBC!!! You are absolutely right about UBC – it has turned into a politically correct cesspool. Don’t know what happened, but having Toope at the helm sure didn’t help. What a left-wing loon he is.
What bothers the *hell* out of me is that universities would not exist were it not for the vast sums of taxpayer dollars that flow to them in the form of direct subsidies and research grants. Yet they behave as if they are accountable to no-one. They have become playthings of the radical left.
Even engineering programs are slowly being taken over by the left, favouring touchy feely outcomes, easy testing, global warming, etc. etc. over solid engineering.
It makes me sick to my stomach to see what has happened. Believe me the destructive forces that ruined education in primary/secondary/high-school are now moving full force into universities. Give it 20 years max.
Loki, I know it may be becoming tiresome, but those are the same tactics used in the Soviet Union in the 1920s. Victims, when confronted by the commissar, after a quiet pause, would ask, “What do you mean that my views, attitude or practices are no longer acceptable to the party”?
Original Rick, I also saw that clip of Agar talking with the Provost and agree with your assessment. His attitude was how dare anyone question the new reality.
Oh, the security “guard” is almost certainly a “student constable” however Queen’s calls them.
Your basic student moonlighting a couple of hours of week for minimum wage. Minimal training ( probably first aid) they are most used in friendly crowd control at football games, talking down the rowdies at the student run pubs, and the like. Or they were when I was there.

Yes, what is happening is also what happened in Germany during the 1930s, when the faculty members who did not have the proper views were replaced, especially if they were of a certain race. This also cut across all the disciplines, even the hard sciences. As in the Soviet Union, one either went along with this enthusiastically or quietly, depending on your need to survive.
Yes, Ken you are correct the methodology hasn’t changed.

Yes – it’s diverse from universities. Only security guards is political correctness. WOW!
Back in the 1970s there were always protesters. No-one really paid much attention and they left everyone alone. Historians will find this period in human existence most fascinating. They’ll ponder a very strange paradox: “While progressives of the time were strongly pushing for ‘diversity’, it was very peculiar that at the same time these same people insisted upon absolute conformity of thought. While many citizens of the early 21st Century felt they were living in a Modern Age, they were in fact living in the Dark Ages of freedom of speech, thought, and ideas.”

TJ – I graduated from UW Engineering 25 years ago – even then the PC crap was started, beginning with the banning of the student newspaper – Enginews. It went underground for a while but the penalty for being caught distributing the paper was expulsion. All because of a few dirty jokes and comics. My favorite was the ongiong saga of ‘Battlestar Prophylactica’
Greg, went to UW engineering myself and you are absolutely right. What did it for me was seeing how the engineering school pandered to Elmasry, a racist, bigoted creep. And yet they gave him everything he wanted, never complained to him, and let him use the university lecture halls as if they were mosques where he could preach his filth and his anti-Israel, anti-West garbage.
As a grad student I had to share an office with one of the many radical students he brought to UW, and all day long I had to listen to this stupid Muslim whine about the West, and tell me how Muslims were going to take over, and so on. Never came so close to punching someone in the face in my life.
So you are right, UW engineering started on its left-wing slope a long time ago. Who would have thought that engineering would fail to survive against the left-wing disease.
Not sure how the problem gets fixed. Maybe it doesn’t….
Damn there are days when I get depressed, but then I see what Loki wrote and I get hopeful. The problem is the sensible people are outnumbered 10:1 today by the loons.
Robert, exactly. I expect that the consolidation and implementation of this totalitarianism will be rough on our children and grandchildren.
People in the future will also wonder why the citizenry not fight back. Well, ask the Germans, or ask the Russians. To some extent both peoples were fooled by “saviors” because they were preoccupied in trying to keep hearth and home together and believed the lies.
Ignoring the politics of the Petlurists and Skoropadsky crowd for the moment, in 1918, 30 thousand unemployed former Imperial Russian army officers sat on their hands when the Petlurists took over the city from Skoropadsky, and again when the Bolsheviks took the city from the Petlurists. This same scene was repeated in Moscow, Petrograd and other major cities. Both peoples quietly let the scum take control.
Btw Hans, you used the right adjective in describing the statists.
Ken in some of the examples you site there was an element of force involved (i.e. guns, armies, police), so while that in of itself should not be an excuse for doing nothing, it might at least provide an explanation.
However today there are largely no guns or police or armies involved, just the sheer force of political correctness and indoctrination.
It truly is scary stuff….1984 could not be a more appropriate story.

The book, one of the most famous in modern history, where the quote question is from was written there.
The way to fight the political correctness and other statist crap is to simply not go along with it. The way in which it’s gotten so out of control is because people aren’t pissed off enough about it to register a protest. Yes, it does get one labelled a shit-disturber, a label which I’ll quite happily wear.
Universities have gotten to be such bastions of totalitarianism that I think the only solution to this problem is for universities to fail and be replaced by an organization where free inquiry is the norm; regardless of where the facts lead. The requirement for me to comply with the “human rights” act of BC is something that I’ll never agree to and this seems to be a requirement of universities, and sadly now, hospitals. This piece of statist crap asserts that the truth is no defense and “feelings” are far more important than facts. My approach to fighting this, should it become an issue, is to publicize the amount of health care money that’s being wasted on statist bureaucrats to come up with absolute BS. Money allocated for healthcare should be spent on direct patient care; not absolutely useless watermelon and statist administrators.
I remember when the UBC engineers had the Lady Godiva ride during engineering week and the moonbats protesting this as it was “degrading” to women. From discussions with engineers back in the 1980’s, the nude woman was a stripper who was well paid for her horse ride. Curious how much controversy this caused when the Lady Godiva ride was very close to Wreck Beach a “clothes optional” beach. Now, the same moonbats who got the Lady Godiva ride and similar events banned seem to have no difficulty whatever with the influx of Saudi students to Canadian universities who treat their women as third class citizens and utilize them primarily to produce future bomb carriers with Canadian citizenship. The record I’ve seen is 4 births in as many years in a Saudi “student”. Such misogynist cultures are seen as contributing to the “diversity” of universities (as well as providing lots of Saudi tuition fees). I’ve had Saudi husbands refuse to let me touch their wife or even let the wife speak to me about the medical condition she’s come to the clinic for. Such situations are the closest I’ve come to slugging an ignorant islamofascist and I have suggested that they go back to Saudi Arabia to see a physician there if they don’t like the Canadian medical system.
As Ken has noted, similar tactics were used in Russia before it was fully under communist control. Right now we’re supposedly guaranteed free speech rights and it’s a case of use them or lose them.
orlin @ 4:23 p.m.:
From the linked pdf document, under Short Term Recommendations (h):
“A $25,000 fund should be established for students and student groups on
an annual basis who want to pursue anti-racist and anti-oppression
programming …”
and (i):
“The university should fund the new Journal of Critical Race Inquiry, an
initiative of the Human Rights Office, to the tune of $5,000 per annum …”
Under Long Term Recommendations (f):
“The university should ensure that all students are required to take a
required course on themes of social justice or social difference in order to fulfill the requirement of all undergraduate degree programs at Queen’s.”
All of this is an attempt to indoctrinate students into the fraud of “social justice”. A degree from Queen’s won’t be worth the paper it’s printed on if it all goes through.
High-school students considering going to Queen’s know a weasel when they hear one.
The fool Provost has shot his institution in the foot.
nv53, I’d apply for the grant to pursue anti-oppression by investigating the oppression of free thinking students in universities and the suppression of any deviance from the statist orthodoxy.
“Social justice” is a moonbat concept with no real world validity. My experience in dealing with brainless moonbats who teach similar courses is that they’re completely incapable of dealing with someone who asks probing questions or points out flagrant contradictions in their teachings. One of the ways of doing this is to lead them through an argument using their own terminology, have them agree every step of the way and then throw in an example of where a complete contradiction to their logic exists in another part of their teachings. Also, asking for examples of “oppression” is a good way to get such individuals into a defensive mode.
People who believe in this sort of crap aren’t deep thinkers and have no concept of logic. They’re good at yelling at people to try to drown them out but don’t do very well when someone stands up to them, especially if one has used their own premises to incite them. Given the illogic that permeates “social justice” and political correctness, it has absolutely no place in a university. In a way I’m disappointed that I’m not in university now as I’ve always enjoyed a good fight.
