Great Big Whacking National News

In what only National Newswatch would ever deem a top-of-the-page national story, great big whacking anti-Conservative, Lib-supporting pollster Frank Graves advises the nation that Canada is heading toward a “great big whacking national unity crisis” that might only be averted by a Liberal party with Justin Trudeau at the helm:

Mr. Trudeau, should he win the federal Liberal leadership, could be the sole national or Quebec political figure who could legitimately champion his devotion to both Quebec and Canada should a unity crisis arrive, argued Mr. Graves.

Yes, the CBC’s go-to “neutral” pollster is clearly an impartial, detached non-partisan who doesn’t pick sides:

“….the simple fact is if you add to the mix a guy who is young, who appeals to this sort of frustrated younger Canada that’s been sitting on the sidelines, a guy who appeals to women and those with liberal values, who have been frustrated about the choices for some time, a guy who wants to establish the middle and the middle class – and by the way, do you really want Thomas Mulcair, clearly his supporters include a lot of separatists…

  1. English Canada better let one fact burn in real good into their heads. English Canada no longer needs Quebec to form a English Majority Government. Harper proved that point. No More French PM’s or French based parties running English Canada.

  2. Liberals look back fondly on the Trudeau era as the “golden years” for the party, in which they racked up an impressive string of electoral victories. What they cannot seem to fathom is that the man who gave them these victories was the same man who ultimately destroyed the party and made it what it is today: a parliamentary rump.
Trudeau’s victories relied on the progressive alienation of significant segments of Canadian society: first the West, and then Quebec. Trudeau’s vision of a centrally planned, overtly socialized Canada was achieved at the expense of a rapidly shrinking base of Liberal supporters. The 1990’s bought them a little more time, but only because of a fractured political right. When that was resolved, the liberal party finally imploded.
Declaring that we should “show the separatists the door” might have been a catchy line in the 1970’s, when the separatists had little or no voice on the federal scene, but it falls on deaf ears now that they do.
The day that the Liberal Party recognizes these grievous errors of judgement will be the day that it can resurrect itself. Until then, Justin’s candidacy will be a pathetic exercise in narcissism.

  3. I’m guessing the percentage of Albertans in favour of separation is even bigger than it is in Quebec.

  4. There seems never to be a shortage of national unity crises when it comes to the Liberals (or NDP, for that matter.) I hope that Trudeau’s admiration for “Papa Fidel” (his words) are brought to mind in the coming months. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

  5. Libertarianism does not fit into a “right-left” paradigm; it is completely off that plane.
    Not true.
There are Leftist Libertarians(most, including Timothy McVeigh)) and there are Right wing Libertarians.
The ignorance is entirely yours in thinking you and they are something new and different.
Blinkered thinking is what you have.
Too enamoured with yourself, you are.
You can’t even understand the need for new air superiority aircraft or how they’re essential to western defence but you’re against buying them, typical of a Leftist.

  6. Hey Oz, if there are ‘leftish’ and ‘rightish’ libertarians, doesn’t that tell you that they are indeed independent of the 2D political scale you use? I think it does!
You can’t even understand the need for new air superiority aircraft or how they’re essential to western defence but you’re against buying them, typical of a Leftist.
Typical of a rightist, you can’t explain how they are ‘essential’ or even worth it beyond LOOKING TUFF or how we’re going to afford them.

  7. Yes, it’s the “new” Liberal Party! With a Quebec-based, French Canadian with a name that has a nice dynastic ring to it in the leadership role. Suck it Western Canada! Eh?

  8. LAS said: “…or how we’re going to afford them.”
That’s easy. Shut the CBC and spend the money on airplanes every year. Plug a couple thousand more million-dollar-a-year holes in the budget and spend that on ships, tanks, boots…
And just giving Canadians a 10% across the board TAX CUT would double tax receipts. Because Laffer Curve.
There, paid for. Any other objections?

  9. Well, her I go again. After reading diLorenzo’s The Real Lincoln, “unity crisis” has taken on a whole new totalitarian meaning for me.
YUP, the perfect battle cry for the Libranos: UNITY!
And as Paris Hilton Trudeau has proclaimed, he will fight to his dying breath to make Canada be what we collectively all know it can be!!!

  10. I read somewhere today (can’t remember where) that if Justin’s name was “Justin Smith” instead of “Trudeau”, no one would ever consider him for leader of the Liberals.
    And for Chris:
OK, here’s a Coles’ Notes version of the difference between Libertarians and the right/left.
Left wingers are generally happy with large amounts of personal freedom (smoke pot, abortions, sex with animals, etc.) but want the government to have very strict control of the economy (regulation, EPA, FDA, etc., etc.)
Right wingers are generally happy with large amounts of economic freedom, but aren’t prepared to give people much individual freedom (war on drugs, anti-gay marriage, anti-terrororist laws up the ying-yang, eg DHS drones, warrantless wiretaps, NDAA, etc.)
Libertarians believe that if you’re not hurting us directly, you can do what you want. So, you can’t sell me meat full of e-coli, but if you want to sell me burgers that are half filler, that’s OK. It’s my choice to buy them or not. If you’re male, and you want to have a b*m buddy, that doesn’t hurt me. (I think you’re perverse, but that’s not enough reason in my books to prevent you from doing what makes you happy.) If you want to smoke pot, as opposed to having a beer, that’s OK by me. If you want to drive around while stoned, that’s not OK, just like you can’t drive around drunk – there’s too much risk you’ll hurt me.
Libertarians don’t agree with organizations like PETA, because they are trying to force their moral values on others. Many of us don’t like Islam for the same reason. We don’t like enforced union membership, but voluntary union membership is fine.
We don’t believe in government foreign aid, because money that’s taken from us by force may be given to countries we don’t want it to go to. But any private charity that raises money freely from people should be free to give aid wherever it sees fit.
We don’t believe in the CBC, because money is taken from us by force to fund an organization with a political agenda that we don’t support (and in fact, even if we did support the CBC’s agenda, we’d still be against government funding of it.)
Chris, do you see the pattern here? Right/left – they’re both about coercion, whether they’re forcing companies or individuals to do what they want. Libertarians are about NO coercion. If you’re not directly harming me, do what makes you happy; I have no right to interfere. As I said, it’s completely off-plane from the right/left paradigm – think of us as the z-axis of politics.
Look at how many topics here at SDA just wouldn’t happen in a Libertarian society. The Swedish lunch lady who was forbidden to make her own bread? Wouldn’t happen. Garbage police going through your trash? Wouldn’t happen. Building/businesses having to close down because they can’t afford to build handicap ramps? Wouldn’t happen. Human rights commissions?. Wouldn’t exist.
Do some reading. Libertarianism is the ultimate byproduct of the Enlightenment, and what used to be known as “liberalism” (before that term was stolen by left-wing fascists).

  11. Phantom: I’d say that was great parody if I knew you weren’t dumb enough to believe that. If I were you I’d learn math. Buy a calculator.

  12. Hey Oz, if there are ‘leftish’ and ‘rightish’ libertarians, doesn’t that tell you that they are indeed independent of the 2D political scale you use?
Sure. That’s why Ron Paul and his son Rand are Republicans, because Libertines are “independent”.

  13. How ’bout we re-organize both Canada and the US? Canada cedes Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba to the US. The US cedes all three states on the west coast plus Illinois, Michigan, every state on the east coast north of North Carolina, and Vermont to Canada. Or you don’t even have to think of it as ceding states or provinces. There are just two new countries. Don’t you think that everybody would be happier? Since I’m feeling generous, the country with Quebec can have Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, as well.

  14. Iowa Jim, please don’t take this the wrong way, but, bugger off with extreme prejudice. I have a better idea. Canada cedes Quebec to the US, along with the whiners in BC, and the US cedes Texas and everything else down the middle. Oh, and while you’re at it you might as well give us Alaska as well. We handle cold better than you Yanks do. If you insist, we’ll throw in Nova Scotia and the non-existent cod fishing.

  15. Mr. Trudeau times have changed. The days of the East ruling the hen house are over. Your Fathers days are gone in the mist. Nothing will bring back Onatario as King pf the heap.Try changing that by force or persecution, & you will see seperation in one day. Not the least problem with you is the idiots you folks vote in. They are more corrupt than ouir own. Which is something let me tell you. No stealing our money ever , ever, ever, again.

  16. LAS @ 5:11pm said: “BLAH BLAH BLAH poopy head!”
Right, so you’ve got nothing then. As usual.
Just to go through the exercise, the JSF is reckoned to be ~$70 million bucks a pop. CBC budget is $1.1 Billion with a “B” annually.
Quick LAS, how many $70 megabuck airplanes for $1.1 billion? More than two I think, eh? How many years between now and 2016 when we’re supposed to be finally taking delivery LAS? That’s like [mutter mutter, scratch scratch] FOUR years, right? So if we shut the CBC by Christmas we’ll save $4.4 Billion bucks by 2016.
How many airplanes is that, LAS?
Tell me again about the arithmetic dude. I could use a laugh.

  17. Poor little Justin Turdeau he got his fathers duplicity and his mothers brains.God help Canada if he ever gets elected.A brainless twit who has never earned a dollar he could call his own.

  18. Peeair Idiot Turdo to a Saskatchewan farmer :”Why shoud I sell your wheat?”
Answer: Because it is the F-cking Law you -ucking idiot!!!
Ya – we need another one like that one.

  19. Oh and then there’s that MASSIVE DEFICIT we have to fill before buying Boy’s Toys. It came in bigger than forecast again. More Conservative incompetence.

  20. LAS said: “You actually believe it’s only going to be 70 million per plane? Naivety for dinner.”
Oh, so you have no problem with the concept, you’re just arguing about the price? Ok, tack 20 million a piece on and do the math again. My point stands.
As to your assertion that military equipment is “boys toys”, you’re making my point for me LAS. Which is that you’re just another dimwit.

  21. Two Post Media columnists have pointed out that JT’s brain trust includes former advisors to Dalton McGuinty, and this is taken as a good indicator of future success in Ont. Ont is not the monolith of 2000, and said advisors were responsible for Ont Liberals having a single seat in rural Ont. LPOC President is Mike Crawley, former wind energy executive and architect of McGuinty’s green energy fiaso; such people have ruined rural Ont for Liberals for a least a generation. It would be helpful for pollsters and Trudeau enthusiasts to remember there is an Ont west of Mississauga Road.
Also worth noting is that federal Liberals currently have 2 seats between Guelph and the Pacific ocean. What policies or ideas Jr can bring to this expanse is a mystery, the name simply evokes memories of the father responsible for the dearth of Liberal seats in the first place.
