  1. Quite true, and when TSHTF, it’s going to be a matter of having the right stuff to both survive and trade with other people. It doesn’t hurt if people also have recession proof occupations.
For those who can’t understand this concept, when the economy goes into the crapper, there will always be work for people who can fix things. Fortunately for me, people break all of the time and while I wouldn’t expect much of a demand for cosmetic Botox in a severely depressed economy, there won’t be any shortage of routine medical problems.
So, either have a widely diversified collection of stuff (with guns and ammo being at the top of the list), or be very good at all sorts of things so that it’s more likely that someone’s going to need your services enough so that they’ll trade you something for them.
Off to do some more survivalist shopping.

  2. The hard, irreducible core of this comes at about 6:15 ff. Think “Tombstone”, a series that goes far beyond mere entertainment.

  3. This guy needs to live a bit longer before presumes to have all the answers to economic woes. There are many people who neither work nor live “off” someone else – those on fixed income private pension funds and investment funds, those who live on their savings/investments. Those on permanent disablity who have paid mortages and vehicles and cottages who live on their savings. Even then the real parasites suck blood from them in taxes.
If he wants to see the true parasitic class (he was right about that) look no further than government and particularly its expansionist tenticle agencies, commissions, authorities – pure parasite class – non productive, non value added regulatory parasites.
Without having to pay their redundant saleries we could all retire at 45. But as the parasite class expands government and increases intrusive regulation, we will all be paying tax to pay our parasitic tormentors till the day we die.

  4. @LOKI
I fix broken airplanes how will I fair?
Seeing aviation FOR Most is a luxury.
    I think I will be .o.k.

  5. @Paul in Calgary:
We aircraft fixes will be fine, since most of the surviving tech is simple compared to what we work with every day.
Might have to brush up on our blacksmithing, though.

That why I stay tight with the ferrier down the road…..

Well this is weird. I fix planes too. I too think we AMEs will fare just fine if the economy goes for a crap, thanks to our knowledge and skill sets. It always amazes me how few people know how anything works or build something as simple as a doghouse. The average person twists a key or pushes a button and PFM (Pure F’ing Magic) happens, when the magic stops their solution is to buy a new unit. I had to explain (to an adult!) how to read a tape measure the other day and to another that if the engine is turning over the battery is not dead.
Regarding Aaron’s dissertation/rant he is quite correct when he states that government is a parasite. A wise parasite keeps its host healthy by sucking out just a tiny bit of its lifeblood. A dumb parasite consumes more and more blood as it grows bigger and bigger until the host is too weak to survive.
There is a maker to taker ratio at which the whole structure of society begins to collapse. Speaking of which, I picked up Atlas Shrugged Part 1 on DVD at Walmart for $5 yesterday.
Robert, be sure to learn charcoal making, if things are so bad that blacksmithing is needed it might be impossible to get acetylene. If you really want to make yourself indispensable in a post-apocalyptic world learn to brew beer!

  8. Conservatives takes these truths to be self evident. Unfortunately, those on the left, who could learn something from this, will not watch this video. So, the good captain continues to preach to the converted, with much sound and fury, in the end, signifying nothing. And Obama will get elected because he insures that the goverment gives out free phones. Democracy is dead.
