This Was The Moment

That the rise of the oceans began to slow and the planet began to heal…

To save the imperiled spotted owl, the Obama administration is moving forward with a controversial plan to shoot barred owls, rival birds that have shoved their smaller cousins aside.

  1. When all the earlier Gorbys were shutting down the northwest logging because of the spotted owl I remember reading where scientists determined that that particular owl was a crossbred owl anyway. Now the narcissist in chief has a real conundrum, he must save the right owl and not the wrong owl or one of them will get owl-ie. What an idiot, our good friends to the south have elected, hopefully they will rectify this come November or we will hurt a lot more in Canada if this clown gets another term.

  2. The Barred Owl’s not just pushing the Spotted Owl out of the way. It is also interbreeding with the Spotteds, forming viable offspring which adopt their parents’ cultural cues, such as hoot tempo and other modeled behaviors.
This is a fact which threatens to debunk the Progressives’ other (than global warming) environmental fraud: the one underpinned by a simplistic notion of speciation, and its accessory legislative ‘achievements,’ like the Endangered Species Act, or the EPA’s silent intrusions into citizens’ property rights based on amphibious or rodential speciation.
Maybe its just easier to eradicate the Barred Owls from a bureaucratic perspective. Pointy headed wogs with Environmental degrees can avoid the hard facts, keep their reoutations intact, and maintain their current grants, if the Barreds’d quietly just disappear.
A Final Solution for the Barred Owl. Death Panels for Barreds. Why didn’t I think of it?

  3. What is this? Social justice for the animal kingdom?
He really does think he’s God.

  4. They aren’t doing this for the Owls sake.
This all about supporting the bureaucrat turkeys.

  5. “Cross-bred owl”. Obama has a lot in common with these feathered sacred “cows”. Puts him in a familiar conundrum. Which breed does he choose?

  6. This is quite possibly the most pathetic attempt of fixing nature along ideology lines.
    Next up, Christian conservatives..
Cut the trees, those little spotted fuggers’ll be gone right sharpish

  7. I bet Native American groups wish the US Government had applied the same solution to the pesky problem of western settlement and expansion. Afterall, it sounds like the same problem.
So just how far will this logic go?

  8. Nothing but a test run for new policy:
If you are a member of a political ideology threatened with extinction at the next election, the enlightened leaders of social change will eliminate your competition to improve your survival chances.
I, personally, feel threatened. This has a chilling effect on my voting franchise, and I shall seek redress with the HRC.

  9. With 5 minutes of research, I found this.
The Northern Spotted Owl is very protective of its
territory and intolerant of habitat disturbance. Each nesting pair needs a large amount of land for hunting and nesting, and will not migrate unless they experience drastic seasonal changes, such as heavy snows, which make hunting difficult.
So I researched precipitation averages for the Pacific Northwest, and discovered this Snowfall has been way above average for years. But this information goes against the narrative that Global Warming causes less snowfall and severe droughts. So the inconvenient data is not even mentioned as a possible cause of the dwindling numbers of owls. It seems to me, it is the main reason the owl population is dwindling. More snow, less food, as the rodent population also dwindles.
How about breeding rodents and releasing them into these areas in a restock program. No cull required. We do it for deer in Canada, when winters are extreme and it works. Simple solution. No death panels required.

  10. “A plan announced Tuesday would designate habitat considered critical for the bird’s survival, while allowing logging to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire and to create jobs. Habitat loss and competition from barred owls are the biggest threats to the spotted owl.”
And they wonder why we are skeptical regarding their “settled science” on AGW?

  11. Can anyone give me a practical reason for saving the Spotted Owl?
The owl is a favorite of the eco freaks for whatever reason and Obama wants their votes … it’s probably that simple. … not a practical reason other than for a politician.
Can anyone give me a practical reason for letting Muslims into our country? Really?

  12. The northern spotted owl is destined for extinction. Killing healthy species to save them is a proposal of fools. They are going extinct because they are weak. In my neck of the woods, about 1% of the land is logged each year. If a species can’t handle a 1% disruption, nature is telling them something. Probably a big cause of the decline is landowners shooting everyone they see to prevent Uncle Sam from tying up land use rights. Shoot, shovel, and shut up.

  13. Another one of Obama’s higher level, counter-intuitive strategies that mere commoners might not have the capacity to understand.
Those of you who question this initiative would have probably also questioned the wisdom of Operation Fast and Furious before it was initiated. Hindsight is 20/20 you know…
My only question is if this will be enacted in Oregon & Washington only, or in all 57 states?

  14. This makes perfect sense to those environmentalists indoctrinated in the collectivist planned society (AKA the left and sundry degenerate ideologists).
Hell, if we can engineer society with the blunt force of the leviathan state we sure as hell can engineer nature to please our sense of social justice. This is just the environmentalist version of the political despotism which ensues in the planned societies when thing do not go as planned and they start the bulldozers making mass graves for people they perceive as screwing up the utopian vision. In this case wildlife biologists who have taken on the authoritarian social engineering mantras, are politically cleansing nature of social groups which do not conform to the utopian preconception that “extinction” is as natural as the emergence of new or adapted species.
Get them scatter guns out comrades, we have lessons to teach nature about natural selection.

  15. Try roasted Spotted Owl with West Coast Cranberry chutney. Very delicate and tastes like chicken!

  16. Big Government does so well at picking economic winners and losers they’re transferring their skills to nature…
    Save the Dinosaurs!

  17. I work directly with environmentalists in the selection of land to be used for oil and gas activity. The regulations that must be followed by my clients is very lengthy. Of course, Burrowing owls are one of the top priorities, due to their diminishing numbers. Of the many valid reasons for their decline, one I was informed about through my work is that in the event of heavy precipitation (melt or rain) they drown. Because they don’t come out from their underground homes. Seriously, these are not smarts birds, and are destined to fail.
Of course, if we kill their competition, spend literally millions on them, we should be able to prolong it for a while. Won’t that make us feel so good?

  18. Aren’t these the same people who attack the Harp Seal hunt that helps preserve our fish stocks?
What am I missing here? Oh ya – maybe the Barred Owl is not as cute as a baby seal.

  19. northernont: ‘How about breeding rodents and releasing them into these areas in a restock program. No cull required. We do it for deer in Canada, when winters are extreme and it works. Simple solution. No death panels required.
And for lefturds too, it would seem. How else to explain the profusion of that flock of dickheads infesting the left coast- California, B.C., etc.?

  20. Ralph: “Try roasted Spotted Owl with West Coast Cranberry chutney. Very delicate and tastes like chicken!
Uh, more like whooping crane, I’d say.

  21. Whooping Crane-yeah! I understand their eggs are tasty as well. Better than Quails eggs.

  22. Yes, death panels for owls. Be sure to kill the most successful ones.
    Occam asks,
“Can anyone give me a practical reason for letting Muslims into our country?” Well, they’re not politically correct. Who ever heard of an Islamic environmentalist?
Who ever heard of an Islamic feminist? In fact you may have heard of both but there are no convincing examples of either.

  23. @John Lewis:
    > Yes, death panels for owls. Be sure to kill the most successful ones.
Yes, wild animals need protection from humans. But not from each other.
Wild animals operate by the survival of the fittest. If you manipulate the population so that the least fit owls survive, what do you end up with? A less fit population of owls that will be less likely to survive over the long term.
To go with devolution in human society, we now have forced devolution in the animal kingdom as well.

  24. Take a deep breath, folks. I don’t think anyone is talking about hunting barred owls to extinction, just bringing their numbers down a little. This sounds like textbook, old-school wildlife management…actually a refreshing bit of common sense.
Sympathy for Occam at 11:44: The downside is that the plan seems to call for professional hunters paid with government salaries. How about we just issue a few more hunting tags for barred owls?

  25. I shot one of these owls that had been banded by the Washington Biological Survey (Wash. Biol. Surv.) I followed the instructions to the letter. I washed it, biled it and survd it. It was awful.

  26. Well, I’ll tell you, if any of those barred owls try to drink in my local pub, the bouncers will kick their feathery asses out…
