  1. Regarding the CBC poll, the “yes” vote is ahead, but it could sure use a big surge of yeses this evening. You know what you should do.

  2. TJ at 5:03 PM, I sooo agree with you about Gingrich and the presidential race. My fear is the Republican base are looking for Mr. Perfect and are prepared to sacrifice Mr. Good in the process. Since no candidate is ever perfect they are screwing themselves. Gawd, I wish I could vote in American elections and primaries.

  3. The US saying no to the pipeline is the best thing that could happen. Now we are forced to ship to china and having two outlets for our oil is better than one.

  4. Charles Adler talks about Northern Gateway last night with a money guy.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24tszlBGj40
Listen at around six minutes as to what the real financial impact to Canada once the oil sands really gets going….the difference between the Texas Crude price (via Keystone) and the world price (via Northern) alone is worth 13-14% of ALL government revenue. Ouch!
We are just seeing the beginning of massive political power play, no?

  5. If there is anything we have learned about Stephen Harper…
It’s that he MEANS what he says and says what he Means…when we lost getting a seat at the United Nations he said a year ago that he knows who Canadas’ friends are…and believe me he WILL find other markets for our goods…he MEANS IT!
And for that we say thank you Mr. Harper!

  6. Kathryn@715, My thoughts too. State had already approved which is why it went to WH and trigerred the iniitial protests. Now they “don’t have enough time” to do study. I call BS, Hillary (the poltician that she is) has decided play along to get along is the way to go. Ah well, to paraphrase my former premier “Let those southern Bas@@@@s freeze in the dark

  7. Looks as if the poll swung the correct way once people got home from work.
Not that Evan Solomon would update the results from the end of his Wednesday show.

  8. Haven’t watched Ezra yet but Newt summed the situation up perfectly.
Now may I be the first to say LET THOSE STUPID AMERICAN SOCIALIST HIPPIES FREEZE IN THE DARK!!!!
(no offense intended to the millions and millions of honest, decent, hardworking and rational thinking Americans)

  9. I see this as a blessing in disguise. The Americans pay us less for our oil than the world market and we need to diversify our trade as much as possible. It is now up to the federal government to ensure that the Norther Gateway pipeline goes through in a reasonable time frame and is not delayed for years due to foreign interference and money.
Right on the money, and well said.
Gingrich is the most intelligent of all the candidates. Unfortunately, Americans don’t vote for issues or for intelligent leaders. The American presidential election is little more than a glorified high school popularity contest. If Obama chooses Hilarity Clinton as his running mate, the GOP are going to have a very tough contest on their hands. Lots of women love Hilarity and lots of urban Americans love their black president who just keeps promising them more gifts from the government coffers. America is doomed to fail, hopefully we can avoid the collateral damage.

  10. If pipelines are such a major concern for Obama – Harper should prepare legislation to shut down all pipeline transfers of oil and gas from Canada to the US until such time as they undergo a 30 day static pressure test of at least 150% of normal working pressure.
Any pipeline or valve that does not maintain the design pressure over the 30 days test period must be removed from service.
We of course sincerely regret any consequential shortages of gasoline or natural gas while test are being undertaken.

  11. …and again Ezra says it like it is. It’s just too bad that those who need to hear this most won’t because they’ve got their heads in the sand or up their butts.

  12. What’s the deal with people getting upset when the resource in Alberta is referred to as “Tar Sands”? The stuff they dig up is bitumen, which as far as I understand a lot more like tar than oil. Seriously, I have no problem with the oil sands mining, but I don’t understand this name issue.

  13. Tim in Vermont, never discount the election possibilities for a sitting President. His chance of re-election is significantly greater than zero. Also remember that right now it looks like the US may go through at least some economic and job recovery in 2012. That means his prospects will improve during this year.
As to selling to Asia, again never discount the possibility of things going wrong during the review and permitting process. I’ve seen too many of these go badly wrong in the past, and in my previous posts here I’ve outlined a few of them.
I’m really not liking the sound of deafening silence coming out of the BC government. A bunch of protest groups can’t by themselves shut down a project like this, but a provincial government can. Just look at for how many years Quebec has been blocking further development of the Churchill River hydroelectric development in Labrador. I can see all too easily BC arguing that Alberta gets all the benefits and BC gets all the environmental costs and headaches.
And the ENGOs already have at least one senior politician in the province bought and paid for: the mayor of Vancouver.
N60: “Gingrich is the most intelligent of all the candidates”
A questionable statement at best. Romney has actually run a state. Gingrich was merely House Speaker, a job with sufficiently low requirements that even Nancy Pelosi could fill it. He’s also the least trustworthy. Which is probably part of the reason why he’s running well behind Romney in South Carolina.
“hopefully we can avoid the collateral damage”
About as likely as the survival of a snowflake in a blast furnace. This isn’t a hope, it’s a delusion.
Helen from Sask., well said. There’s a lot of folks who post here who have systematically accused him of being a CINO over the past year or so. And they need to eat a lot of crow pie.

  14. Of course, if we attempted to do as The Suzuki suggests, build an oil refinery in Canada, his head would explode.

  15. Late to the discussion but my concern is about Canadian national security. The economic ramifications from Keystone XL and N. Gateway are obvious. The status quo is already costing Canada $8 to $15/ barrel by being tied to WTI crude price. That’s the obvious part.
Canada has to build N. Gateway to counter those American and international forces (Opec’ Saudis and Venezela) who are actively financing efforts to stop Canada’s export of crude to S.E. Asia. Canada failing to build this project is ignoring the very reason why we have survived the global economic chaos of the past 5 years as well as we have. Commodity price strength has provided the money.
If Canada does not want to be another banana republic and have its affairs dictated by foreign countries then we have to grow up and start running the country in a way that reflects Canadian interest. The only economic policy I have ever seen in this country was a tax policy to promote eastern Canadian manufacturing. We should all realize now that Ontario has descended into the American rust belt and has to reinvent itself. Exporting our commodities will have to pick up the slack.
This is bottom line stuff as a nation. Canada cannot allow foreign interest to dominate the economic or political independence of the country.

  16. lefty/enviros have to clue into the law of unattended consequenses , if you dont like a pipeline, will they like a rolling pipeline better?

  17. Well, after all, the Saudis paid for Obama’s education so this is the payback – increased reliance on M.E. oil.

IMHO the KEYSTONE XT is dead even if Obama is re-elected.. The puker President has been put in the “Petty” box by Valerie Jarrett & Soros. He can’t change his mind without looking petty & stupid. Canada better go for the China Market
This changes the dynamics of 2012, Mitt may be history if he doesn’t know how to change gears..

  19. Newt’s right this time because he always know what to say to draw applause from the folks in front of him.
Put a different set of folks in front of him, he’ll say something different again — http://youtu.be/VuBd1atfhQ4
Just so freakin’ full of it, it really is unbelievable that people can fall for this guy.

  20. According to a G&M article last March, Alberta companies produce 879,000 barrels of synthetic crude per day from the oil sands which finds it’s way to American refineries via pipeline and down the Transmountain pipeline to Vancouver and out to Asian markets by ship. Keystone and/or Northern Gateway will handle increased oil sands production, current production is already findings it’s way to market
Nobody ever mentions Kinder Morgan’s Transmountain application to twin it’s pipeline and increase capacity by 400,000 barrels a day. These guys have already been permitted once and are in operation, plus they are shipping out of Vancouver. Has anybody looked up Kitimat on a map? It has 120 km of river and channel before you get to open water. This storm over the Northern Gateway is getting quite emotional. Is it really in the national interest,or in the Enbridge shareholder’s interest? Think about it. Financial disclosure: I own shares in Transcanada and Enbridge as well as 2 other pipeline companies.

  21. Not a Newt fan, but he nailed this one.
At the end of the day Gingrich is an American through and through. Unlike Obamba he sees roots in the US, and will not sell out its core values.
Peter Jay – I agree, he’s a slimy politician; I’d rather see RP as president than a self interested individual like Newt. At the end of the day, Newt towers over Obamba, who has proven to sell out his country and back socialist dictators publicly, proudly calling them friends.

  22. “Not a Newt fan, but he nailed this one.”
I also was not a Newt fan, but better a Street fighter is picked to win 2012…, or someone will resort to SAM… Hell can’t be far off…

N60, we are not gona fail.
And, Americans don’t vote on issues ? Where were you the last election ? The Tea Party candidates took back the House of Representatives and ran on balancing the budget, closing the US/Mexico border, repeal ObamaCare and Stop the Spending. Those are some major issues, eh ?
    ,

  24. Obama is a friggin idiot. Surpassing Carter as the worst president ever. I never liked his politics but he was dully elected and I figured cut him some slack, but not any more. The sooner Americans kick his rear out the better. With my first two picks out I am now endorsing Newt. There I said it.

  25. Terry:
    N. Gateway is emotional especially if you are convinced that Canada is being ‘played’ by foreignors. At some point Canada has to join the big boys and take reponsibility for her affairs. I can agree that PMSH has done more in the past 5 years than other governments have done since Pearson.
    The issue with Gateway is how much oilsand production will there be to transport by 2020. With over 60 oilsands projects and $135 billion in capital projects underway you read volume projections from 3 to 5 million barrels per day. I honestly think Canada needs;
    1) Northern Gateway
    2) Keystone XL
    3) Western crude to Montreal
    and yes
    4) TransMountain upgrade
These projects are essential for Canadian independence, support of our social system and our economy. The impact on our trade balance would be enormous.
