  1. I guess Qantas won’t be buying a whole lot of carbon offsets under Gillard’s national seppuku tax.
Any bets she nationalizes the airline?

  2. Good for Qantas…..and I just started reading Atlas Shrugs. While I know the gist of it…I wanted it word for word.

  3. The oil sands producers should do this for a week! Turn off the pipes! Nothing will shut the enviro-weasels faster than that.

  4. We should be thankful for a majority government that is not beholden to the unions the way Julia Gillard is.
    Quantas = Air Canada

  5. Good for Quantas and I agree with all of my fellow commentators – Air Canada should do this with their staff as well!

  6. Yup , as an aircraft maintenance engineer , i work for viking air here in canada they are stationed out on the islandd but opened a manufacturing shop here in calgary, our shop here in calgary is not unionized, the shop out in syndey(vancover island) is unionized.
We cannot get parts regularly, the parts we do get either have to be reworked or scrapped , and currently the unionon is voting to strike , we have produced 10 airplanes in THREE YEARS!!!!
in 1941 , they were producing 1 airplane every 55 minutes that was wider ,longer, and had a few hundred thousand more part’s than the aircraft (twin otter) we are working on remanufacturing now the 400 series.
just so you get the idea here is a link to watch a video from 1941 ,
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKlt6rNciTo
And today we can’t even build a twin otter 400 series, a proud canadian product that is in huge demand all over the world , and what is happeneing is that becasue the old planes are slowly time exing , there is a huge demand , we can’t deliver so now china is developing there own plane russia is developing there own version , and now france is developing there own version ….none of these will be as good as the twin otter but i digress this is what will happen to quantas if it continues to let these union bullies dictate how they run there company.
I just wanted to show you how far it has gotten.
I am embarrassed for viking air , they are a good company with good product’s but the union is slowly but surley sucking the life out of this company as well .
i actually side with the company on both of these account’s, i work for a company that pay’s me well in my non union shop, i have benifit’s,rrsp matching, sick day’s , my birthday off with pay, i get three weeks vacation every year and i am able to roll it over year after year, as well as my sick day’s ……all of these thing’s the company provides me with, and IS UNDER NO OBLIGATION TO DO SO, so i am greatful to my company . The union got these nice thing’s braught in i will give them that credit but i will not be sad if they take them away , why because those are luxury items not to be expected if a company wants to have a good reputaion it will take care of it’s employees , as well if the employees don’t like the company or what it offers they can leave simple as that . The company does not owe you anything other than a fair wage and the manditory stuff like federal holiday’s and so on ….but as for pensions and benifit’s and dental care and eye care nad sick day’s and christmas parties and all of that …they don’t have to do that , but comapnies do do that becasue they do care and the unions alway’s try to paint the comapny as a fat greedy selfish rich spoiled white guy that needs to be yoked and ran sacked and any and all cost’s .
I honestly hope my company shut’s down as well , it will be hard for me to find work but i know that in the long run i would be having to this anyway . i hope the company does not cower to the union thug’s in either of these cases .
    Thank you
From an aircraft maintenance engineer (tin basher) with an “s” rating

  7. Both management and staff at Qantas deserve a severe haircut – I never flew with a more arrogant lot, and the level of service coupled with their refusal to make good on their failures made even Air Canada look like a dream come true.
Fortunately there are other ways to get to Australia.

  8. And zorro1 from the comments: “Cant recall when, maybe in the 80’s something similar happened and all the pilots were sacked and replaced, many ended there careers as taxi drivers”
    Good first post, Klya.

  9. I hope Quantas tells Oz’s Commie PM to go pound sand when she starts making back to work demands claoming Quantas as an essential national service (which amounts to nationalizing the company in as many words).
How to go Quantas, time to take some parasite scalps.

  10. Wow, the union must really be pushing hard for Quantas to pull the plug. Of course the union bosses don’t care; they’re the true ideologues. They are the 1%.

  11. Kyla, as she says, is a long-time commenter here, much appreciated by other long-time, and, no doubt, short-time, non troll regulars.
    Cheers, Kyla!

  12. I’ve flown Qantas years back, both domestic and international and I have to say they were a lot better than Scare Canada on a good day. That being said, Qantas isn’t the only Oz carrier and as a company it has the right to do what they can to stop losing money in a safe manner.
to the union toadies that feel belt tightening during economic downturns doesn’t apply to them… “Suck it up buttercup.”

  13. Qantas was doomed the moment the Australian gov’t opened up the LAX-SYDNEY route to competitors. Now, instead of paying $15k round trip for Business Class, you pay less than half that.
Further, Delta’s Business Class is so far superior to Qantas – my clients will twist their schedules in a knot just to fly Delta over Qantas now.
If the unions don’t get real about the situation, Qantas is doomed.

  14. The writing was on the wall for Quantas the day the UAE – Gulf carriers were allotted 3 – 5 -? flights/day to Oz.
All of the whining, sneering and threats by the ex-pats flying the UAE airline’s 380’s, T7’s, etc. as well as all of the Arab owners threatening PM Harper, Air Canada and Canadians in general; as well as booting our air force out of camp Mirage has obviously had a totally different effect for Air Canada, et al. than it did for Quantas. If Quantas and that Ozzie leftwing government had allotted the UAE carriers 1-3 flights a week rather than wide open skies the lawyers and accountants running Quantas would not be laying off 1,000 or more Quantas employees in Ozzieland.
Air Canada whiners should be on their knees thanking the gods/Harper for saying NO to those desert thieves and their shiny big sardine cans with wings. As goes Quantas – so goes all legacy airlines of the western world.
