Any martial art including boxing is as good/ deadly as the person has put into it (lifestyle & training).
Different body types will also favour individual martial arts, of course with rules to the exception. TKD’s form or technique relies heavily on legs and kicking, in my experience tall but well balanced individuals with long legs excel.
Short statures with heavier upper body mass works better for others – etcetera………..

  2. Putin has an advanced degree of black belt in Judo, which is full contact. It’s largely centered around throws, ground holds, strangulations and armlocks. He studied judo seriously in his youth at St. Petersburg. His favourite throw is Harai-goshi. He’s probably the toughest leader around.
Though Ankela Merkel of German also has a black belt in Judo. I’d wager she could take Obama, and may have to before the economic situation improves 🙂
He likes the manly arts of Judo, hunting, fishing and riding horses. He’s in seriously good physical condition for his age.
That most here don’t recognize that shows how far the
“girly man” syndrome has gone in North America.
I disagree with much of Putin’s foreign policy, domestic economic and political policy, but he is a man,
    strong, tough and smart.
Hopefully, they will modernize their political economy before the price of oil and gas finally drops. Russia is a cold place to be poor.

  3. Larry – ah, so, Judo. Now that’s impressive. TKD has a bad rep. – and indeed, a few years ago I took a dozen or so classes myself. All elaborate dance routines, and that confirms everything I’ve heard subsequently.

    Wax on, wax off.
TKD like anything starts with routine and repetition. You are always a trainee, and not considered seriously qualified until you reach a black belt and even then continue development onwards to 9th Dan (Rank).
There are different facets to TKD, including show, competition and real life fighting styles with sub categories to each.
Your opinion of “elaborate dance routines” simply means you really didn’t understand the objectives, no offence implied; it occurs with everything to everyone somewhere. Mine was math, now I need it regularly and get it.

  5. Knight, I’ve also taken a fair amount of Jiu-Jitsu, and the dance routine stuff isn’t there.
I’m glad it works for you. I’m no Pei Mei, man.
    Wax on, wax off?

  6. Re TKD:
The Mixed Martial Arts are, IMO, a fairly good measure of the real-world efficacy of any given combat sport (I’m excepting the mostly-apochryphal “street fighting arts” that use eye pokes, groin strikes, nipple-twisters, etc.,) because you’re allowed to use wrestling, boxing, Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, karate, judo, tae kwon do, etc., etc.. The largest number of MMA champions and contenders in recent years have a collegiate wrestling base (Randy Couture, Brock Lesnar, Caine Velasquez, Frankie Edgar, Dan Henderson, Grey Maynard, Josh Koscheck, etc. etc. etc.) There are also quite a few who still come from mostly Jiu Jitsu backgrounds (BJ Penn, Anderson Silva), and there was a fairly successful Judo-based guy (Karo Parisian), and a couple of great champions (George St. Pierre, Lyoto Machida) who started with Karate backgrounds, but there’s never been a single champion or even a high-ranked contender who comes primarily from a tae kwon do background, even though it’s a very popular sport all around the world.

It’s great to hear that many SDA’er s get away from the keyboard and study any martial arts.
Again back to my original comment, it’s what you put into anything that makes you good. I’m not saying TKD is better or deadlier than the next martial art; in fact it’s about lifestyle and attitude first and foremost for me. If you prefer brute force in a fight it’s hard to beat lean hard muscle and a baseball bat.
These days as youth fades, I diligently train combat techniques with .45ACP& 9mm, earlier years of TKD helps me focus out stress.
Very few martial arts experts run faster than 1000fps.
