It’s Gas, Gas, Gas!

When refined in the US. Bugger the beetles:

The Politics of a Pipeline
State takes one step forward, but the greens are furious.

That was in April 2010. But the EPA cried foul, and State went back to work. Sixteen months later, State has now produced its latest impact statement. Volume One alone runs to more than 500 pages, taking in such considerations as “direct impacts to beetles”…
Alas, the saga is far from over…
Your guess is as good as Ms. Kidder’s about where Mr. Obama comes down—and it’s a pity that the decision will have at least as much to do with his re-election calculations as it does with U.S. energy security and job creation. But as a case study in how political indecision and bureaucratic delay contribute to the sickly economy we have today, the Keystone XL drama has few equals.

  1. If the Americans don’t want Alberta oil then biuld the pipeline to the west coast and sell it to China, they will take it.

  2. I just finished reversing a pipeline to bring crude oil up from North Dakota into Saskatchewan just to bring it back into te US via the existing infrastructure in Manitoba and Minnesota.
The federal regulations are so bad it is almost never economical to build a new pipeline. The ironic part is that to transport that oil without a pipeline it takes multiple daily trips with diesel powered tanker trucks.

  3. The famous Reaganism comes to mind:
“Hi, I’m from the government and I’m here to help.”

  4. “If the Americans don’t want Alberta oil then build the pipeline to the west coast and sell it to China, they will take it.”
But George Soros has already anticipated that move and thwarted it by funding Canadian environmental groups, through the Tides Foundation.
Greenpeace says we in B.C. will be awash in leaked oil if we allow that damned pipeline!

  5. This is what happens when a cowardly president trades government policy decisions for political support. The radical left, who put Obama in office, want to keep the US dependent on Mideast oil, and to keep it’s price high. Stopping the XL pipeline has thus been their top priority. For them, ” there is only the fight”, always and forever.

  6. @ dmorris, this will not change until the people get fed up and elect governments that tell George Soros’s environmentalist useful idiots to rub salt.

  7. The left want to keep the US dependent of Mideast oil and to keep its price high?
That’s certainly the effect … not sure whether it’s the left’s intent. That would mean they’d actually have to look at the choices and make a decision based on their self-interest.

  8. If they really don’t want the pipeline then why doesn’t someone in Alberta build a refinery and ship finished product across the border in rail cars? Yes yes yes I know I know rail is no where near as efficient or as safe as pipeline but who cares. They don’t want a pipeline!

  9. Riddle: What do you call a Democrat who’s lined up for overpriced gasoline and has suffered through three rolling blackouts in the last week.
Hint: Obama knows the answer, which is why he’ll approve this pipeline.

  10. Far be it from me to suggest that America’s energy future should not be decided by an aging ex-Canadian actress with bipolar syndrome, but I’m hoping that these protests will be seen for what they are…
A tiny minority of extremists funded in part by sources who do not have the best interests of America at heart.

  11. Sarnia Jim @ 2:25pm:
I sound like a broken record but that line to Kitimat has to be built no matter what! $25 per barrrel discount over Brent is way to much for the national self interest of Canada to absorb. I love my American cousins but business is business.
And yes I do believe there are American business interests that are funding groups opposed to the Kitimat line. It’s time for the federal government to show leadership here.

  12. The pipeline to Kitimat has to be built. A $25 per barrel discount from Brent is simply to much. The USA is our best friend but that discount is plain stupidity.

  13. So, what would happen to the leftoids if Soros kicks the bucket? What would POTUS (Puppet Overseeing The US)do without the puppet master? I’m not advocating anything but he is an old fart with no mini-me waiting in the wings. Just askin’.

  14. I will note that Gbson contributed tothe Republicans. Its cmpeteters that gave to Democrates are not being investigated.

The steady barrage of power chords and piercing solo attacks attracted the attention of nearby U.S. Border Patrol agents, who arrived at the scene just as Los Zetas broke into Led Zeppelin’s ‘Immigrant Song.’ By the time the dust had cleared, U.S. Border Patrol Agent Oscar Jimenez was found in a catatonic state of headbanging. He was later flown to University of Arizona Hospitals, where his condition is listed as seriously rawked.

  15. They will rule that this pipeline is not in the national interest, after a small review period which we are now in, unless, of course, the proper campaign check is written to the “right people”.
    This one’s a lay up.

  16. “His son Alexander Soros is also gaining prominence for his donations to social and political causes. Alexander led the list of student political donors in the 2010 election cycle.”
Unfortunately,Soros has five offspring, and it seems one son is ready to take over when dear old Dad shuffles off to answer for his activities in WW2.

  17. From Levant’s book “Ethical Oil” he points out that the Saudis have lost billions as the US now receives a greater amount of its oil from Canada and they are doing everything in their power to discredit Canada. They are funding these environmental groups to attack Canada and of course buying as many US politicians like Obama as they can.
The same groups and politicians fight any attempt to drill or use their own US oil sands. The radical left care only for their agenda and it isn’t about US oil, its about the destruction of the US economy and way of life.

  18. set you free – the left can’t persuade the public of a need for windmills, alt energy subsidies, and in general gain a stranglehold on US energy policy if energy of all forms is cheap and stable in supply. This is why they are completely against fracking – it’s knocked US gas prices to historic lows. A few years ago the greens had absolutely no problem with fracking, (which has been used extensively for decades, but has recently been used on a large scale on shale beds) and encouraged the use of then-costly gas in lieu of cheap coal for electricity generation. It’s only now, when gas produced from fracked wells appears to be a means by which America can escape the rolling blackouts new carbon emission rules from Obama promised to bring all across America, that they have any problem with it. ( This campaign against fracking will soon be extended against new fracking being used in S Texas in tight rock formations, and which has promise to yield new production on the scale of a new ” Venezuela or Kuwait ” there, and against fracking in the Bakken formation, which has turned North Dakota into America’s fourth largest oil producer and has tripled production in 3 years. )
This tactic of economic destruction is one of the left’s oldest, and is called ” heightening the contradictions of capitalism”, and is done in the belief that economic collapse is conducive to the radical’s ascent to total political control of the country.

  19. ct – Exxon has a US ad campaign going which really explains how oil sands are a big plus for US energy security, and US jobs. Did I mention Obama has recently seized Exxon leases on blocks in Alaska containing huge amounts of recoverable oil? As Obama said: ” If “they ” pull a knife, we pull a gun. ”

  20. $25 per barrrel discount over Brent is way to much for the national self interest of Canada to absorb – ct
It seems that the transport issue is the only reason a discount would be necessary to move the oil. I understand US refiners consider it very sweet stuff.

  21. “And yes I do believe there are American business interests that are funding groups opposed to the Kitimat line. It’s time for the federal government to show leadership here.”
Yes, there are and they are called Hewlitt Packard for one:

…..Tides, and the U.S. foundations that fund it, have incredibly deep pockets. A large part of Tides’ funding comes from the Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation, the William & Flora Hewlett Foundation, the David & Lucile Packard Foundation, the Pew Charitable Trusts and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. These are The Big Five. They give away about US$1.2-billion every year. If these foundations decide to undermine a foreign industry, they probably can….
