You are Sitemeter visitor number…
With the year winding down, this seems a very good time to thank you all – readers, tipsters, guest bloggers, and sponsors – for helping make SDA the success it has become!
Update! And here’s our visitor number 20,000,000.

Note: I use the Sitemeter count to mark SDA traffic milestones because it’s the public counter displayed on the blog. However, it’s not as accurate as the internal logs. For example, while Sitemeter shows 4,302,538 visits to the site since January 1st, internal logs indicates 4,596,908 “viewed traffic” (omitting robots, etc.). This evening there were as many as 8 visits per second coming into the blog.

Ron, I would never have thought you were a part time masochist, Kinsella,CBC,Star Globe and the Huffpooh, all necessary for the beagles and John Crosses, but nothing but pablum and socialist propaganda. This site is the red meat and the truth, like Fox and soon Sun. The Star Bourque CBC are for laughs, the headlines like Harpers marriage, Globull warming All Hail Iggula, thats just for comic relief.
Congrats, Kate. Just stopped by to tick the meter, someone over on WUWT mentioned you were approaching the 20M moment.
Alex: I find it amazing that someone so endowed with intellect and discernment, would deign to stoop so low as to attempt to communicate with the rest of us.
The ultimate juxtapose;
* Most commenters on sites such as CBC, G&M, CTV, and especially the climate alarmist sites, even desmogers, often have opinions that are at odds with the writers spiel.
* Kate’s commenters are, save for a few trolls here and there, usually behind her 100%.
So telling that the “majors” score 9% with their readers while Kate scores 99%. Says it all.
Matt:
sig·nif·i·cant
adj \sig-ˈni-fi-kənt\
1
: having meaning; especially : suggestive (a significant glance)
2
a : having or likely to have influence or effect : important (a significant piece of legislation); also : of a noticeably or measurably large amount (a significant number of layoffs) (producing significant profits)
b : probably caused by something other than mere chance (statistically significant correlation between vitamin deficiency and disease)
“leftist blogs” is an asinine phrase because the word “leftist” is used mainly by half-literate dimwits in order to justify applying broad stereotypes to anyone they dislike. It has no meaning, it adds nothing to the discussion, and it serves only to further entrench the public acceptance of the left vs. right dichotomy.
Glad I could help!
Saith Alex @4:40 – ‘…a significant portion of the readership (of SDA) thinks it’s plausible that adam had a pet velociraptor…’
Saith Alex @3:12 – ‘”leftist blogs” is an asinine phrase because the word “leftist” is used mainly by half-literate dimwits in order to justify applying broad stereotypes to anyone they dislike.’
Anyway, no more with the troll. Go SDA’s sitemeter!
Jim said, “I find it amazing that someone so endowed with intellect and discernment, would deign to stoop so low as to attempt to communicate with the rest of us.”
He’s just pretentious.
Alex said, “”leftist blogs” is an asinine phrase because the word “leftist” is used mainly by half-literate dimwits in order to justify applying broad stereotypes to anyone they dislike. Broad stereotypes such as your posts at 1:30 pm and 2:40 pm?
Apparently BM doesn’t understand what the word “significant” means, either.
No, silly, it doesn’t mean “everyone”, or even “most”, so pointing out that a significant percentage of the readership consists of overly-theistic science deniers is not a “stereotype” – it’s a factual observation. But thank you for illustrating my point about half-literate nitwits.
Congratulations in advance Kate on the big 20.
And as a fellow member, I just want to remind you Mensa’s AGM is coming up in May in Banff. You should attend — check out the website.
@Alex:
Excellent! Unlike your RSS feeds it looks like you can cut and paste! At least from dictionary sites.
Ok, we’re slowly getting there.
Again, where are the survey results which allowed you to reach your conclusion that “a noticeably or measurably large amount” of SDA readers “thinks it’s plausible that adam had a pet velociraptor”? I look forward to analyzing the survey results.
“”leftist blogs” is an asinine phrase because the word “leftist” is used mainly by half-literate dimwits in order to justify applying broad stereotypes to anyone they dislike”
So ET is a “half-literate dimwit” who is ‘broadly stereotyping’ you…and also dislikes you. I didn’t realize your two were acquainted!
“It [leftist] has no meaning”? You should have spent a little more time at the dictionary site.
leftist
— adj
1. of, tending towards, or relating to the political left or its principles
— n
2. a person who supports or belongs to the political left
So, Alex, if I were to say that “a significant percentage of Muslims are terrorist sympathizers/Jew-haters/woman-abusers”, you wouldn’t have a problem with that?
Matt, I’m not sure what your obsession with surveys is, nor do I particularly care. Feel free to conduct whatever surveys you like, and analyze them to your hearts content.
It’s good that I’ve managed to correct your mistaken assumptions about the relationship between myself and ET, although I’m not sure what the relevance is. Regardless, again, glad I could help!
I’m quite familiar with the definition of the word – my objection is to the usage. Again, half-literate dimwits, etc, et al. The word “retard” has a dictionary definition, too, but the usage tends to be rather loose and most often has nothing to do with the actual definition.
BM: of course not. Why would I? You think I’m some sort of “leftist” or something?
*rimshot*
I think it is important and useful to occasionally see what the other sites have to offer – see what is behind their weird take on the issues of the day.
When ever I, or others ask questions, they do not answer with facts, data or proven track record. It is usually just a mish mash of;
What!, you work for the tobacco companies? The rich must pay! All oil companies are capitalistic pigs (even though 90% of them are state owned and controlled) blah blah Sarah isn’t even a women.
IOW, they usually have nothing to offer but one must keep tabs on the enemy.
Last site I go to after work… Save the best for last, and I know I am going to spend some time here… Cant remember how I got here the first time, but I am glad I did… Thanks for the time and effort you put into this Kate, you are better than a video game…LOL
No labels people are so progressive.
@Alex
I would simply like some, ummm….you know, facts to back up your “factual observations” about the “overly-theistic science deniers” and the ‘Adam-owning-a-velociraptor’ SDA readers. Unless you’re not interested in proving your assertions?
Also, do you see the irony of accusing people of being “half-literate dimwits” while also claiming that “It [leftist] has no meaning”?
Matt:
http://www.smalldeadanimals.com/archives/015667.html
and
“no”. I’m thinking you don’t know what the word “irony” means, either.
Congratulations on the success of SDA blog, Kate!
I suspect by midnight tonight the 20 million mark will be reached.
I have been visiting since July 22 2005 that I am aware of, but possibly before that, was attracted by your own frequent succinct conservative toned posts and take down zingers.
No other conservative blog exists in Canada which matches the quality or caliber of posters and discourse (ET comes to mind) on your Small Dead Animals blog.
Kudos to your helpers, formerly, Vίtruvious, now EBD, Cjunk, Mark, Kevin Jaeger to name a few.
I have posted this suggestion on this blog before, my hope is that you, Kate, would become a contributor on the new SUN TV as well.
Your presence would guarantee SUN TV an instant audience, believe me!
Best wishes for a Safe, Healthy,Prosperous,Happy New Year to You Kate and all who visit and post to SDA blog!
I AM,
Joe Molnar
obviously someone is going to be visitor 20,000,000. good job Kate.
Is Alex Beagle’s protrusive brother? Actually Adam’s velociraptor was named Virgil. Prove me wrong.
Congratulations Kate, it is an accomplishment to be proud of.
Congratulations, Kate, you’re reaping the reward of consistent hard work and excellence.
It’s fascinating to observe the effect this popularity has on bitter, little pissants such as alex.
congrats Kate from Calgary
and a beagle is just a bugle that plays sour notes.
Looking at the site meter I’m glad to be apart of the “unknown” and “Europe” area, thats 22%, the rest of the world outside North America/Canada. And who would have thought such a following in Italy, Spain and Mexico.
I know for a fact of course there are a lot of expat Cannucks at work overseas, but a lot of us “others” come to Kate for news, intelligent comment and discourse, humour and because her views, yes, they reflect ours, and we identify with her, and personally speaking truthfully, I like Kate in my world, and to steal a quote, “we need more Kate’s” many many more.
Thanks Kate
I’ve been around since…I proposed the first time I found SDA. Been in love since then.
All the very best to you and yours Kate.
Happy and Prosperous New Year
Pat
@Alex:
I’m thinking you’ve once again demonstrated your inability to read the dictionary.
But at least you’re finally making a sort of big boy effort to address your assertions, although we’re still a long way from proving that a “significant portion of the readership thinks it’s plausible that adam had a pet velociraptor”.
As Kate’s 20 million hits shows, SDA has a large number of readers. Some believe in creationism, some in evolution, some probably somewhere in between.
I have no idea what they all believe, nor do you. So try opening your mind to the idea that the caricature you’ve created of a “significant portion” of SDA readers may actually be incorrect.
Try arguing in good faith (as it were), you may find you have some interesting – even enlightening – discussions.
Congrats Kate.
BRAVA, Kate! Like bluetech, I’ll be sending a cheque in the mail.
Besides SDA and, among other sites, like ET, I go to Pajamas Media and National Review every day. But first, I go to Power Line, a perceptive, engaging, well written, political (and music and sports!) blog by three American lawyers, John H. Hinderaker, Scott W. Johnson (Minnesota), and Paul Mirengoff (Washington, D.C), all graduates of Dartmouth College. Power Line is really worth checking out.
Beyond condescension, I’d really like to see Alex trot out his vitae. he likes to make quite a broad pastiche of ad hominems and semi-clever stereotypes about the audience. He probably knows one of his favourite targets is an emeritis professor at a well respected large Cdn university, but what the hey, he’s so much cleverer.
Then there’s the cute, but bizarre “science denier” schtick he likes to trot out. So Alex, lay out your science qualifications to see if you’re even qualified to be in the discussion. I’ll start with mine: 15 years at two Cdn universities in study and/or research in epizootiology and speciation in large predators. Followed by 25 more years of business and applied biology in forensic analysis of certain members of the human population of the GTA. That’s 40 years worth of hands on with things that can and do kill. Published. Peer-reviewed! Able to read most scientific papers and understand the underlying science in a single pass… Can spot scientific BS a kilometer away. Have a legal eye, bio-knowledge and personal aptitude for detecting fraud.
Building an RSS list requires the skill of lesser apes – point and click. Only 50? What do you do to occupy the rest of your gray matter? C’mon Alex, expose yourself. If your cred as high as you believe it is, then engage – we dare you.
Great job Kate and all your other helpers.
Lets stick it to the nanny’s another year.
Matt, I suggest that, in the future, you buy your dictionaries from someone other than Alanis Morissette.
As for the creationist and generally anti-science bent of SDA, you’re welcome to keep denying it, if you wish. I don’t expect to change your mind. SDA readers who can think coherently are so few and far between that I certainly know better than to get my hopes up. I’ve provided you with the data-point you requested – if you choose to ignore it, that’s your problem. Now, if you have nothing new to add, I think we’re done.
Alex, you’re such a pussy. Go play with your dolls. Momma will be home soon. Idjet.
Skip, if you knew anything about science, you’d know better than to get into a pissing contest about credentials. “Dr.” Magda Havas of Trent University is every bit as credentialed as you are, and is clearly a complete f-ing lunatic. If your idea of a valid argument is:
“I have a paper saying I’m smart, and I worked as a scientician!!!111!1”
then we have nothing to discuss. If you took that approach while trying to get a paper published, you’d rightly be told to piss off.
“…now we are twenty million…” This line from the 1967 Centennial theme song plays in my mind as the nines tote up on the ‘odometer’.
I thank Gormley’s radio recommendation, circa May 05, for directing me onto this site. Been a fan ever since; as I’ve seen other promising blogs fizzle away. There’s a durability to this one which is extraordinary. Small Dead Animals is indeed special.
Alex, have you ever seen the post where the SDA viewers tell us what they do for a living?
You know..what they make money at without the need for drinking beer whilst staring out the window waiting for the welfare cheque to arrive?
You would be surprised.
That the majority are not knuckle dragging mouth breathers will come as a shock to you, no doubt. However, as that reality does not fit your narrative I doubt you will wish to inquire further.
I will say that the folks who visit here are probably better educated than most of the people you know and are likely more philanthropic to boot.
Alex, put up or shut up. My science has been tested and gets tested daily. Lives, families, businesses live and die on my daily science. I’m calling you out. Put up, put out, or pull out. So far All you’re doing is creating a wind. Over to you, squirt.
He probably knows one of his favourite targets is an emeritis professor at a well respected large Cdn university, but what the hey, he’s so much cleverer.
– Skip
Now, now, Skip! ET, I believe, would scold you for that! I believe she would call it something like the fallacy of a resort to authority (but that’s not quite the right term). I believe she would be disappointed to hear that her arguments are respected ‘cos she’s a professor emeritus instead of for the general soundness of her arguments. For as we all know, none better than ET, much grave error is retailed by possessors of that honorific title.
Stuff Alex is ignorant of:
Monsignor Georges Henri Joseph Édouard Lemaître ( lemaitre.ogg (help·info) July 17, 1894 – June 20, 1966) was a Belgian Roman Catholic priest, honorary prelate, professor of physics and astronomer at the Catholic University of Louvain. He sometimes used the title Abbé or Monseigneur.
Lemaître was the first scientist to propose what became known as the Big Bang theory of the origin of the Universe, which he called his ‘hypothesis of the primeval atom’.[1][2]
Kursk: nothing surprises me any more. I’ve worked in dozens of different fields, and seen complete idiots employed in all of them. I’ve met military intelligence analysts who honestly think that the 9/11 attacks were “an inside job”. I’ve met biologists who think the earth is 6,000 years old. I’ve met pilots who swear they were kidnapped by aliens, and taken to visit their colony on mars. I’ve met construction foremen and engineers who get high on the job, and cops and EMT’s who drink and drive. Holding a respectable job doesn’t mean you’re not an idiot – it just means you haven’t screwed up enough to get the boot, yet.
I can’t say with any certainty whether the “folks who visit here” are better educated than most of the people I know, although I think it’s unlikely. What I can say is that they are certainly far more delusional and self-assured than most of the people I know, and their mindset is actively encouraged by the ringleader. It takes a special combination of ignorance and arrogance to use titles like “The Sound of Settled Science” followed by a link to an article about the discovery of a fossil in the middle east, or a link to an article about some minor changes to the way the periodic table is laid out.
Alex and Beagle are right. We are all unworthy – Kate, commentors, lurkers, all of us. 20M?? The phenomenal success of Kate’s blog is soooooo unfair. I feel ashamed for being part of it.
Congrats, Kate.
At the risk of breaking the troll law….
Alex, after your tale about the whack-jobs in your life I’m reminded of that saying…you know, the one that starts out, “If you can think of three people in your life that that are idiots….”
“I’ve worked in dozens of different fields,”
Can’t keep a job there eh Alex! Don’t take it personally its probably just you.
Chin up there Bucky. Someday you too will decide what you want to do when you grow up.
@Alex
Well of course “[you] think we’re done” neighbour. You realize the comment thread “data point” you provided does nothing to prove the “creationist and generally anti-science bent of SDA”, therefore you would like the subject to be dropped.
I once read some people on a Globe & Mail comment thread discussing their belief in creationism. Therefore, a “significant portion of the [Globe and Mail] readership thinks it’s plausible that adam had a pet velociraptor”!
See how retarded that is? Eh…maybe you don’t.
“I can’t say with any certainty whether the “folks who visit here” are better educated than most of the people I know, although I think it’s unlikely”.
That’s a bit better neighbour. At least your attempted insult is stated as an opinion, not as a fact which you can’t prove.
Best blog on the internet, by far. Congrats!
Alex
Being a frequent client at various rehab clinics does not constitute working in dozens of different fields.
For Alex the troll.
Unlike you, who has sat at the keyboard today, with nothing productive to do, some of us were at work creating wealth, instead of throwing darts at meaningless opinion about what you ‘think and feel’.
Your point of view espouses big government….government which never is able to come in under budget on almost everything it does. Inefficiency and laziness, they name is government.
As for the rest of your speculations, it is simply lazy and typical of those on the left, name-calling and ad hominem attacks, backed up by nothing but trivial ‘feelings’.
You jumped the shark with your Adam velociraptor comment……..just showed yourself as the ignorant troll you are
Oh, and on the subject of science, your hero the Goracle did NOT invent the internet……..and to really disappoint you…..(he’s a politician, but don’t tell anybody!)
Case in point – the kind of mindless rhetoric being spouted by Dan (and others, to a lesser extent) is exactly why I object to misuse of words like “leftist” by people who should know better. You’re misleading the mindless masses into honestly believing that they can evaluate complex political issues – and the position of others on those topics – based on simple talking points and baseless stereotypes. I know that it’s necessary to simplify these things to some extent, lest it go completely over their heads, but there has to be a better way.
Well, it looks like I was off on my guestimate …only by a few hours!
Way to go Kate!
I really don’t expect beagle or Alex to change their ‘minds’ and admit that they are wrong…so maybe ‘ignore the troll’ is good energy saving advice.
I really was cheering them on for a bit as they were increasing the traffic.
Kate, congrats!
(And, to you too, lance. I don’t know if this goes in reverse, but Marian Pearson, Mike’s wife, said, “Behind every successful man is a surprised woman.” I suspect in your case it’s “Behind every successful woman is a proud guy.”)
Kursk @ 6:25 sums it up well. There is a broad range of occupations and levels of educations represented here at SDA.
There is some variation of religious belief or lack thereof and almost always a respect of that variation shown. In contrast, on left-wing blogs the denigration of religious people is vicious.
Mostly what we all have in common is the love of individual freedom and the opposition to a form of government that would dictate every aspect of our lives.
Go Kate, you speak for freedom.
BTW, Happy New Year to all.
Like the countdown to New Year, I can’t stay awake long enough to see the 20,000,000 but as sure as the sun rises tomorrow, my daily fix of SDA will be here.
Bravo Zulu, eh.
Beagle:
Why on earth do you come here? You have to know by now that pretty much the rest of us think you are an idiot.
And if you think we are all stupid conservative neanderthals, well that begs the question that I first posed. Why bother coming here?
You are certainly not going to change anyone’s mind by your juvenile comments.
Anyway…I have wasted enough time on a nonentity such as yourself.
Congrats and thank you, Kate
