  1. It appears to me that the key is the strength of the earth’s magnetic field which is recorded in the Ap Index 1932 to 2010.
Whenever that protective magnetic field lays down, as it has now, it seems to allow for more vertical mixing of the inexhaustable supply of cold from outer space with near-earth atmosphere.
That partly explains why the 1930s had both some of the hottest records and many of the coldest temperature records in North American history.
I really don’t like this going.
    brrrrrrrrrrrr.

  2. 1:30 ET…that is 00:30 Sask time, right?? By chance, We happen to be babysitting a black cat for the week so maybe the two of us will watch this once in every few hundred year event. I think my witches brew will be hot chocolate with a bit of Kahlua.

  3. Like the song says.
“The days are warm, but the nites are cold.”
As for the solstice, I’m going to stick to the Coca-Cola Santa of the 50’s.

  4. Hey, does this mean that the thing you call the sun is responsbible for all this climate change? Can I change out of my sack cloth for heating my basement and having the air conditioning on at the same time during that one hot Wednesday in July?

  5. Just contacted my soothsayer, and he says it’s a sign the Toronto Maple Leafs are NOT going to win the Stanley Cup this Spring!
    Such wisdom!

  6. Hmmm? Could this have something to do with the snow in parts of Australia yesterday?
burton, hopefully the Ontario voter gives you that wish.

  7. I highly recommend everybody follow WUWT on a regular basis. I find myself following it more closely recently than SDA — with no slight intended to our gracious hostess.
Lately, WUWT has been on an incredible hot streak (pun intended) of excellent articles on the CAGW issue — with input from some extremely high caliber contributors. For obvious reasons, Kate cannot link to them all.

  8. Colin from Mission B.C. at 2:04 PM,I don’t know about anyone else but I’ve noticed lately that the first C and the A have been dropped by the usual suspects from CAGW. I’m still waiting for the W at the end to change to a C, though.

  9. Jack Frosst @ 12:06 The Coca-Cola Santa is probably OK, but in our house we switched from Coke products to a competitor after we noticed that Coca-Cola has teamed up with World Wildlife Fund.

  10. ““climatic jihad”.”
    It’s AlMoh’s AGW.

“Department of Homeland Security goes off the deep end – plans now to battle “climate change” in addition to terrorists
Posted on December 20, 2010 by Anthony Watts
Not content to keep to the terrorism prevention mission for which they were founded, DHS’s Janet Napolitano now plans to battle a religious war of “climatic jihad”. Here’s what happened the last time Washington DC took on weather in February 2010 (but not climate). The capital was shut down of course. Now that’s “environmental justice”. Look for pat downs at airports soon for those carrying concealed carbonated beverages.

  11. Well, there’s some delightful reporting in the Montreal Gazette story that Kate links to. This winter solstice/lunar eclipse conjunction is said to be the first in 372 years, so the reporter, one Rebecca Lindell, puts on a display of her historical knowledge of what happened 372 years ago, in 1638:

An otherwise seemingly unexceptionable year in recorded history, the darkened moon happened during a bleak year for Tudor England.

Lady Jane Grey was beheaded for treason that year, while Princess Elizabeth was imprisoned in the Tower of London. Mary of Guise — the mother of Mary, Queen of Scots — became regent of Scotland.

Okay, very interesting, although all that happened in 1554. So what’s a difference of 84 years between friends…
