Reader Tips

In a Reader Tip thread a few weeks ago commenter Black Mamba referred to Baker Street’s “horrible, catchy, self-enchanted, faux-passionate, gloopy saxophone bit.” The description was apt. Tonight, as a palate cleanser, we offer up a soothing saxophone poultice in the form of a Duke Ellington song which showcases the end-of-the-world expressive skills of the late Johnny Hodges. Do yourself a favour and listen to this one: from his 1960 album Blues In Orbit, here’s Duke Ellington and his band playing the deep, achingly beautiful Brown Penny.
You are invited, as always, to provide your Reader Tips in the comments.

  1. At bookwormroom.com, guest blogger Lulu asks twenty Probing questions for the useful idiots aboard the Hamas Flotilla.
    The first four:
    1. Are you aware that Iran was caught smuggling weapons into Gaza?
    2. Do you think Israelis have any legitimate reason to be concerned that Hamas may try to receive weapons via boat?
    3. Did you know that Hamas activists have shot about 4000 rockets into southern Israel since Israel withdrew from Gaza?
    4. Does that trouble you?
    The rest here.

  2. Anybody know what’s up (no pun intended) with Watts Up With That? It’s been down since this morning.

  4. Daniel Henninger:
“This may well be Obama’s Katrina, but presidencies come and go. The more lasting lesson of the Gulf fiasco is to discover how belief in the omnipotence of government had risen to the level of mysticism for so many, and not just on the left. Some conservatives joined the do-something chorus to ‘stop’ oil gushing with hellish force from deep inside the earth’s core. (Set aside for now the interesting matter of just how vast the reserves of oil actually are down there.)
“Coming as it did on the heels of various other government fiascoes and embarrassments—the subsidized-mortgage crisis, ethanol, California issuing IOUs, Bernie Madoff, ultra-deep public debt, infrastructure turning to dust everywhere—the Gulf mess is the moment for the American people to reconsider just what they think government can do, or should do.
“When not gripped by hysteria, many have a more rational view of government’s limits…”
    The whole thing here.

  5. EBD,The very first question that should have been asked is, ” Have you read the ‘Hamas Charter?”

The next question would be “Do you understand death”?

  6. The news out of Saskatoon’s SPCA of the 82 dogs being seized from a back yard breeder ticks me off.
This lady had Irish Wolfhounds, Huskies, Malamutes, and a pile of cross breeds seized by the SPCA in Fort Mac a few years ago. It seems she knows how to use the court system to her advantage and got all her dogs back….Intact. The main stream media nor Saskatoon SPCA was aware of the Alberta seizure.
I have contacted CKOM, they say they will be interviewing the contacts I gave them. Maybe this time this “lady” will not get her dogs back….and hopefully not be allowed to own another one ever…

  7. It looks like others are lining up to kick Oblameya.
    You lie Salazar!
    from Fox news:
“Experts Say White House ‘Misrepresented’ Views to Justify Drilling Moratorium”

“Salazar’s report to Obama said a panel of seven experts “peer reviewed” his recommendations, which included a six-month moratorium on permits for new wells being drilled using floating rigs and an immediate halt to drilling operations.

“None of us actually reviewed the memorandum as it is in the report,” oil expert Ken Arnold told Fox News. “What was in the report at the time it was reviewed was quite a bit different in its impact to what there is now. So we wanted to distance ourselves from that recommendation.”
Salazar apologized to those experts Thursday.”

“In a letter the experts sent to Salazar, they said his primary recommendation “misrepresents” their position and that halting the drilling is actually a bad idea.”

“They also said that because the floating rigs are scarce and in high demand worldwide, they will not simply sit in the Gulf idle for six months. The rigs will go to the North Sea and West Africa, possibly preventing the U.S. from being able to resume drilling for years.”

“New calculations double rate of oil spill into Gulf
A new calculation of the amount of oil spilt into the Gulf of Mexico from the fractured BP oilrig has dramatically increased the estimate, suggesting that an amount equivalent to the Exxon Valdez disaster could be pouring into the ocean every eight to ten days.
The fresh estimate from a US government panel is 25,000 to 30,000 barrels of oil a day, significantly above the previous forecast of 12,000 to 19,000 barrels a day.”

“South Africa warns against crime ahead of World Cup
JOHANNESBURG (AFP) – South Africa on Thursday urged World Cup visitors to exercise caution against crime, after two groups of journalists were robbed ahead of the opening match.
“We appeal to citizens and visitors to also exercise care of their personal safety and those around them,” government spokesman Themba Maseko said in a statement.
“Of the country’s 190,000 police officers, only 40,000 have been allocated to World Cup operations. These officers will be supported by their counterparts from the 32 participating teams,” he said.
Participating nations have sent their own police delegations, ranging from the small to the large, like that of the United States.
“Therefore 150,000 police officers will be available to continue with normal policing,” Maseko added. “Policing of the country and ensuring the safety and security of all within it remains a 24-hour operation.”
Police said on Thursday they had arrested three people in connection with the armed robbery one day earlier of three journalists covering Portugal.”

    That’s nothing,
A 14 year old boy throwing rocks on our border and we killed him,
when Mexico shoots their first rocket we will attack and take their oil supplies.

  11. I LIKE the sax on Baker Street.Makes the tune stand out. And thats the whole point of “a HOOK”, it grabs you.
Another outstanding lead break is the lead guitar in Year of THE Cat. I know thats a bit dated, but the guitar was awesome I thought!!

  12. Last February 1, 2010 I sent a letter to my MP PMSH and Mr Prentice regarding what I thought of AGW and “my” government signing onto COP-15 on my behalf.
I received my reply this morning from Brian T. Gray, PhD, Assistant Deputy Minister, Science and Technology Branch. It only took 2 more emails from Prentice’s and PNSH’s offices and 98 days to receive my “reply”.
The meat of the email consists of:
“The intergovermental Panel on Climate Change’s Fourth Assessment Report, published in 2007, concluded that the climate system is clearly warming, as shown by increases in global average air and temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global average sea level. The Report concluded that it is very likely that emissions of greenhouse gases from human activities are responsible for most of the observed warming since the mid-twentieth century, and that a human influence is now evident in many other aspects of the Earth’s climate. The Government of Canada has accepted these findings. A fifth assessment cycle is currently under way, which will culminate with completed reports to be delivered over the period September 2013-September 2014.
The Government of Canada will continue to take a realistic, responsible approach to addressing the challenges of air pollution and climate change. The Government is committed to reducing Canada’s total greenhouse gas emissions by 17 percent from 2005 levels by 2020. Canada has consistently emphasized the importance of harmonizing its approach to climate change with that of the United States, as a means of maximizing progress on reducing greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining economic competitivenes and prosperity. As the federal government moves forward, it will work closely with the provincial and territorial governments, as well as stakeholders, to develop a coherent national climate change and energy security policy.”
No other references were cited in the email.
Draw your own conclusions. Oh, and I haven’t been audited yet but I only filed my corporate taxes last week. time will tell.
    Keep ya posted.

  13. Meanwhile, back at the Chretien Mafia Headquarters, the agenda of Being In Power continues.
Rather than acting as a political party and developing policies and programs to appeal to the electorate, the Liberal Party, long ago moved out of politics and into demagoguery control of the economy by an unelected govt power. Again, the Liberal Party is NOT a political party resting in the electorate. It is a Govt Control Party resting in control of the unelected.
This is via control of the bureaucracy (confined to Montreal-Quebec-Ottawa bilinguals); control of NGOs, control of the justice system (appointed judges), control of federal grants, etc. Remember Desmarais and PowerCorp. They haven’t gone away.
So, the primary and only agenda of the Liberal Party is focusing on How To Regain this unelected Power.
Tactic one is to constantly smear Harper. These are fake stories, emotional hysteria, meant to smear and demean via their control of the MSM. So, we have their attempt to link Harper to Mulroney and Schreiber. Their ‘wafergate’. Their various attempts to suggest that Harper has a ‘secret abortion agenda’. Their name-links with Bush. It’s endless, endless…
Tactic two to get back in power now, is to remove any attempt to set up the Liberals as a political party, focused on policies and program devt..and simply, manoevre the electorate into voting for a non-CPC candidate. Since they have no policies, then, the focus is on merging all non-CPC candidates into ONE.
Chretien is busy, assisting Rae in merging the Liberals and NDP. Agenda? Not policy or program devt. They long ago abandoned any interest in this. Not in appealing to the electorate who are viewed with disdain by this group and are treated as idiots to be bribed and manipulated for the vote and then, ignored.
Their agenda is simply to merge the two ‘parties’ – and only the NDP is a valid political party – and move through an election on Brand Name. Not policies. But Brand Name.
Two tactics: malicious and untruthful smears of opponents. And Brand Name manipulation of the electorate who will be bribed and brainwashed for their vote.
That’s the Liberal Party of Canada.

“*’Follow the Islamic way to save the world,’ Prince Charles urges environmentalists….
Prince Charles yesterday urged the world to follow Islamic ’spiritual principles’ in order to protect the environment. In an hour-long speech, the heir to the throne argued that man’s destruction of the world was contrary to the scriptures of all religions – but particularly those of Islam. He said the current ‘division’ between man and nature had been caused not just by industrialisation, but also by our attitude to the environment – which goes against the grain of ’sacred traditions’.
Charles, who is a practising Christian and will become the head of the Church of England when he succeeds to the throne, spoke in depth about his own study of the Koran which, he said, tells its followers that there is ‘no separation between man and nature’ and says we must always live within our environment’s limits.

    “**Turkish Catholic leader beheaded
Rome – The head of the Roman Catholic Church in Turkey, killed last week by his driver, was decapitated in a “ritual Muslim sacrifice,” the head of a missionary news agency said on Tuesday.
After the murder of Luigi Padovese, the driver reportedly shouted from the roof of the victim’s house that he had killed the “great Satan,” adding Allah akbar (“God Is Great”), a Turkish journalist told AsiaNews.
The news agency for overseas missionaries said Padovese “was stabbed in his home, and managed to leave his home to ask for help,” AsiaNews director Bernardo Cervellera told Italy’s Sky TG24 all-news television channel.
Vatican spokesperson Federico Lombardi, contacted by the religious news agency I-media, said he was awaiting clarification of the reports but would neither deny nor confirm them.
Turkish news reports said the 26-year-old alleged killer, Murat Altun, had been released from a psychiatric ward a few days before the murder.
He told police he had had a “divine revelation,” the reports said.
Local authorities have ruled out a political motive in the killing, and Altun’s lawyer and mother both said he had psychological problems.
The 63-year-old Italian bishop, Vicar Apostolic of Anatolia since 2004, was killed at his summer house in a Mediterranean seaside town near Iskenderun, close to the Syrian border in southern Turkey.
Pope Benedict XVI said shortly after the murder that it was “certainly not a political or religious murder but rather a personal affair”.”

  15. Johnson Controls makes most of the batteries you buy at Walmart or Canadian Tire regardless of the brand logo you see on the product.

An old Johnson Controls factory is being converted to make lithium-ion batteries as part of a $299 million federal stimulus grant announced last year.
The Ford and Azure Dynamics electric delivery van featuring Johnson Controls batteries was shown earlier this year at the company’s headquarters and power solutions headquarters in Glendale.
Azure Dynamics said a wholly owned Canadian subsidiary of Johnson has agreed to buy 21.08 million shares of Azure at a price of $6.324 million in Canadian dollars, which is equivalent to about $6.08 million in U.S. dollars.
That would give Johnson Controls a 3.4% ownership stake in Azure.

No dolphins… no whales… no bluefin tuna… no swordfish… no turtles… no coral beds… no plankton… The first man to dive below America’s worst environmental disaster looks at the evidence
Thirty feet down in the Gulf of Mexico, the water suddenly goes dark. Above me, a ragged black silhouette of oil is eclipsing the sunlit circle that is the surface. I feel a familiar twinge in the back of my brain, the first warning that soon I need to get back up to breathe. With concentrated calmness, I pause and hang in the water, staring. Oil is above, around and beneath me; out of sight somewhere way below lurk yet more dark clouds of oil. This is now America’s worst environmental disaster, according to the White House. The beaches are clogged not only with oil, but with clean-up workers, TV crews and politicians. But it is here, beneath the slick, that its destructive power will be most felt.”
