Reader Tips

Welcome to SDA Late Night Radio. Tonight’s musical attraction is the talented and delightfully idiosyncratic New Englander Jonathan Richman, who was featured previously here, here, and here. In tonight’s song, Richman firmly but empathetically advises a heartsick friend that he’s going to have to emotionally let go of his former girlfriend; even though her new guy doesn’t deserve her, and might be leading her down the wrong path, the only thing to do is Let Her Go Into The Darkness.

  1. This video from UN Watch shows a series of inflamed statements being made by various UN members –
Saudi Arabia: “Once again Israel has committed a massacre…a new massacre.”
Bahrain: “…unjustified terrorist attack…” Qatar: “a barbaric act.” Cuba: “a new indiscriminate massacre at the hands of the Israeli army.” Nicaragua: “We cannot continue to witness these massacres carried out by inhuman occupying powers…”
    – and then shows the following statement being read by UN Watch’s Hillel Neuer:
“This debate turns on one question: was this flotilla humanitarian or not? To answer this question, let us first examine the objective of the organizers, and then the means they used. Evidence of the organizers’ objective can be be found in the path they chose and the path they rejected. Israel, which in the past year has delivered one million tons of aid to Gaza offered to receive the flotilla’s cargo in the nearby port of Ashdod and after inspection to deliver it to Gaza. the organizers, however, rejected this offer. Because they wanted to create a political provocation, they were looking for a physical confrontation. Mr. President is this a humanitarian path?
“Further evidence can be found in their state of mind as demonstrated by their own words: on sailing, supporters chanted, quote, ‘Intifada! Intifada!‘ and ‘Oh Jews, the army of Mohammed will return!‘ One supporter declared that the aim of the flotilla was either one of two good things, quote, ‘achieving martyrdom or reaching Gaza.’ Mr. President, is this a humanitarian state of mind?
Less us also examine the means they used: axes, knives, metal bars, even guns. Mr. President, are these humanitarian means? No. This operation was organized by a radical group, the IHH, with extensive documented ties to terrorist groups. Their objective and means had nothing to do with humanitarianism. Mr. President, seated next to me are representatives of the world’s great humanitarian organizations: the International Red Cross, the refugees agency, the office that coordinates humanitarian affairs. This resolution, introduced by countries such as Libya, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Sudan, (is) an insult to the world’s real humanitarians.”

  2. It was a landmark occasion when Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, and other American music icons came together to record “We Are The World.”
Now 25 years later Captain Stabbing and Friends come together in support of the Gaza “humanitarian” fauxtilla to record We Con The World.

Mona Charen asks, in her article “Flotillas and Falsehoods,” “Don’t members of the press ever resent being so used?

“In each and every case, the ‘news’ of Israeli atrocities was broadcast far and wide by organizations such as Reuters, AP, CNN, and AFP. The United Nations has offered its imprimatur to every libel. The truth seemed always to have a case of laryngitis.”

    (…)

“Some commentators sympathetic to Israel complain that the Israelis were late getting their explanation of events to the press. That’s probably true, but almost irrelevant. There is a jerking of knees around the world whenever and wherever Israel is forced to defend itself. This eagerness to repeat the Palestinian version of events, to assume the very worst about Israel, and to ignore the history of blatant and outrageous lies by Israel’s enemies — amounts to joining them.”

Also, maybe look up ‘collective consciousness’.
In the 1930s we saw that very effective manipulation via mass media.

  10. Engineering and critical weld blueprints were never properly approved, whistleblower states.
You have to understand how major engineering projects are executed.
I’d like to see what “critical weld blueprints” actually refers to. There exists a strict methodology regarding piping fabrication as defined by various ASME codes.
[Technical quibble: “blueprints” as a description of engineering drawings is, well, wrong. Unless the drawings were reproduced 40 years ago. Yeah, I know, I’m being pedantic.]

Sixteen Differences between Conservatives and Liberals
    1. Conservatives plan…liberals scheme.
    2. Conservatives believe in elections to change things…liberals believe in lawsuits to change things.
3.Conservatives believe that laws are there to be followed…Liberals believe that laws are there to scrutinize in order to find ways around them.
    4. Conservatives believe in the will of the people… Liberals believe in their own will.
5.Conservatives believe in the sanctity of all human life …liberals believe in the sanctity of themselves.
6.Conservatives believe in capitalism…liberals believe in a government that controls all money.
7.Conservatives believe in free speech for all…liberals believe in free speech for liberals.
8.Conservatives spend their own money on charities…liberals spend taxpayers’ money on charities.
9.When conservatives don’t tell the truth, they lie; when liberals don’t tell the truth, they tell an untruth, or they attack all persons who refuse to believe their lie, or they pass a law or initiate a lawsuit to change their lie into the truth, or they decide it is excusable because of the horrors that conservatives have thrust upon them.
10.When conservatives establish a rule, it is for everyone; when liberals establish a rule, it is for everyone else.
11.When conservatives criticize jews or blacks or women, they are sued or sent to jail; when liberals condemn conservatives, they are applauded by other liberals and the media.
12.When conservatives are criticized by America’s main stream media, it is business as usual; liberals are never criticized by America’s main stream media.

Since then the environmental movement has been going through a period of loss – grieving the loss of an ideal and hoping for a new reality that will culminate in a new global climate change negotiation in Brazil in December.
But the game is up. There will not be a meaningful commitment to climate change mitigation involving all of the leading polluters, especially the US, China, India and Canada. What is more, the general public in Canada, the US and Britain are all signalling that climate change is less of a priority for them now than it was five years ago.”
“The changing face of the environmental movement
What a difference a year makes.
This time last year the environmental movement was gearing up for a major breakthrough at the Copenhagen Climate Change Summit. With a combination of “doom and gloom” soothsayers – Ban ki Moon, Al Gore, Prince Charles, James Hansen, David Suzuki – and optimistic negotiators, it was clear that Copenhagen was being positioned as “the last chance” we had to save the planet.
We know what happened during the negotiations, however. Polluters couldn’t agree with the small islands and the developing world and the negotiations fell apart, with a compromise “lets-look-as-if-we-might-save-the-planet” deal being signed off by a few countries at the end of a tough 10 days of negotiation.”

  15. The Bob Rae – Michael Ignatieff internal fight to take control of the Liberal Party is heating up.
We have a number of issues.
First, Rae has made it clear that his agenda is a coalition of the Liberals and NDP. That’s to get him a majority. He’s not merging them now – gosh – he has to get rid of Layton – but, is suggesting that if you voted in a minority Liberal govt then it would seek a coalition with the NDP to give them a majority.
Second, he’s campaigning against both Ignatieff and Harper at the moment. He’s trying to set up an image of Ignatieff as ‘lite-Harper’, so that people will turn against Ignatieff as a clone of Harper who is a clone of…etc.
Rae is calling for extending the Afghanistan mission beyond the 2011 deadline set by all of parliament. That’s right; parliament debated and voted to end the military mission at that time. Rae wants it extended.
But wait – weren’t the NDP violently opposed to not merely extending the mission but the whole war? And most of the Liberals as well? So..now Rae is playing the ‘appeal to misery’ strategy of ‘all those little girls who can’t go to school’…Why?
What else is Rae doing to unseat Ignatieff and merge the two leftist parties?

“Turkish ambassador calls for Hamas to take part in “final solution”
In an unfortunate turn of phrase, the Turkish ambassador to Washington twice said Friday that the terrorist group Hamas is a necessary and important part of the “final solution” to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
“Final solution” was the phrase Adolf Hitler adopted to describe his plan to exterminate the Jewish people.
“For a final solution, you cannot ignore Hamas. That’s what we are saying,” said Ambassador Namik Tan. “This is not the first time that we are trying to bring this into the discussion. We have told this to the Israelis, to our American friends, to our international interlocutors, everyone. How could you imagine a final solution without Hamas?”
Tan’s choice of words aside, his comments highlighted the yawning gap between the positions of the Turkish government and that of the American and Israeli administrations, as tensions linger following this week’s Gaza flotilla incident.
Only yesterday, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, “I do not think that Hamas is a terrorist organization. I said the same thing to the United States. I am still of the same opinion. They are Palestinians in resistance, fighting for their own land.””
