Reader Tips

Welcome to SDA Late Night Radio.
The jaunty march Hail to the Chief has been associated with American Presidents for almost two hundred years, but frankly it just doesn’t sound right anymore. I’d like to propose a new song which, I suggest, is more suitable for President Obama’s entrances on important ceremonial occasions. Performed here by a nifty little trio consisting of Rob Bourassa on ukulele, Mike Karoub on cello, and Gerry Phillips on hand fart, here is my suggested new entrance music for President Obama: Ben Bernie, Maceo Pinkard and Kenneth Casey’s 1926 hit song Sweet Georgia Brown.
There. That’s better.
The thread is open for your Reader Tips.

Quite the nice collection of knives (not the eating kind), tailor made clubs, etc.

“a neighbour who liked to keep his curtains drawn, are among dozens of people being reported to a police scheme aimed to unearth potential terrorists.
Critics of the Channel Project say it encourages people to spy on their neighbours, but police claim the scheme’s aim is to prevent ‘vulnerable people’ becoming radicalised.”

  3. Don Surber: Greens fire the polar bear.
“It has begun to dawn on the environmental crowd that the fact that we now have five times as many polar bears as we did 50 years ago has diminished their value as a symbol of the Goddess Earth being tortured by the sins — or at least the SUVs — of Man…”

  4. I want to know how long dude had to train on the hand-fart?
Ukulele, sure, whatever. Cello? Piece of cake.
    Hand fart? Now that’s music.

  5. A musical fanfare for ‘bama?
I think the opening line from the chorus of Cielito lindo does the trick….over, and over, and over, and….

  6. Thanks EBD, for finally recognizing manualism. I guess your LNR predecessor Vίtruvius was too musically sophisticated to consider it for inclusion.

  7. Hey, PiperPaul, Vίtruvius is the guy who posted “How Much Is That Pickle In The Window.” So…
    Wrt Cielito Lindo, aye. Aye-aye-aye.
Excerpt from Ezra’s essay “Why Is It OK To Pick On Christians?:

“(NDP MP Pat Martin) wasn’t the only one worried that Msgr. Dolan might wave a wand and turn him into a newt. Gilles Duceppe, the leader of the Bloc Quebecois, actually asked about it in Question Period. Duceppe named two Conservative party volunteers who apparently are members of Opus Dei, noted that ‘a Conservative’ invited Msgr. Dolan to the dining room and demanded that the Prime Minister ‘admit that his policy is influenced’ by such people.

“Neither of the women named by Mr. Duceppe works for the government in any way, and neither was known for their religious views– until Mr. Duceppe took it upon himself to discuss their private lives in Parliament.

“A reporter asked Mr. Duceppe if he wasn’t being ‘a little Mc-Carthyite’; Mr. Duceppe brushed off the accusation and went further: Opus Dei members should not be allowed to participate in political life–even as volunteers –if they identify ‘as a group.’

“Stop for a moment and try that sentence out again, substituting the words ‘gay’ or ‘Jewish’ for ‘Opus Dei members.’ Jews shouldn’t be allowed in politics if they ‘identify as a group.’ Sikhs shouldn’t be allowed in politics ‘if they identify as a group.’ How does it feel?

“Mr. Duceppe then went a little Dan Brown himself, claiming Opus Dei ‘have people in place … so a lot of things prove that something’s going on.’ He really said that.

“Try our substitution experiment again. Gays ‘have people in place.’ Gays have ‘something going on.’ How does that sound?”

  8. Does anybody know, was that a base or a baritone handfart? Anyhow, Gerry Phillips had a great hand action.
Peter O’Donnell, if this Sistak job offer scandal gets legs, this might just happen. The word impeachment has been mentioned in some quarters.

  9. According to recent headlines, UK taxi drivers that snap are 33% more lethal than the IDF’s Flotilla 13.
No doubt, UNHCR will be launching a full independent inquiry.

  10. And “JCP”, Gov. Sarah would say:
“How’s that total handgun ban in the UK workin’ out for ya?”

  11. A big killing spree in the UK yesterday – proof positive that the most totalitarian gun regulations this side of Stalin, don’t work.
Wonder if they are going to ban taxi drivers now?
Naw mabey twenty years ago, but not now.

  12. JCP, I saw that also. Very bizarre. A taxi driver wandering around in his car shooting at people from the driver door window?
Pretty original as spree killings go (wait for the movies; I don’t think Hollywood had thought of this one yet) but of course also tragic.
Now I suppose all English cab drivers will have to undergo strenuous psychological evaluations in the future.

  13. This has got to be a Reader Tip: Lawrence Martin sticking up for Stephen Harper. Did Martin change his brand of whiskey?
What could be duller than our PM? Plenty, actually
“The rigidity is overstated. Behind the scenes, the Prime Minister is not, as it often appears in public, in need of a blood transfusion. He has a piercing sense of humour that on a good day, aides attest, could give Jon Stewart a run for his money. Another unknown talent is his capacity as an impersonator. Mr. Harper cracks up his cabinet on occasion with splendid imitations of those across the floor facing him in Question Period.”

The Turkish charity at the centre of the raid by Israeli forces on an aid vessel in the Mediterranean was under intense scrutiny last night over its alleged links with militant organisations.
Despite their claims to be an entirely peaceful organisation, The Foundation for Human Rights, Freedoms and Humanitarian Relief (IHH) has a history of involvement in Islamic extremism around the world and has been linked with an attempted bombing of an airport in the US.”

“US wary of nuclear blast to stop Gulf oil leak
The official in charge of managing the U.S. response to the oil leak disaster in the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday downplayed the possibility of using a nuclear or other explosive device to try to seal off the well.
“I think that’s really on the peripheral of things we ought to be talking about right now,” Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen said when asked about suggestions that a nuclear explosion be used to seal off the leak.
“It hasn’t been seriously briefed to me,” Allen told ABC’s “Good Morning America” program. “I think you’d have to run out of a lot of things before you’d consider something like that.””

  16. EBD – that’s an interesting comment by Duceppe – that members of a specific identifiable group should not be allowed to participate in public life.
Identifiable groups are all religious, all ethnicities, all languages (including francophones)..and all members of political parties, of unions…oh…and that includes the Separatistes.
How can people with a stated agenda of breaking up Canada be allowed to make decisions about federal issues – and pick up a lifelong pension paid by the Canadian taxpayer? Would Duceppe care to answer that?
Section 2-d of the Charter says that ‘freedom of association’ is a fundamental right’. And section 15, both parts, precludes any group identification being used to deny equality.

“Obama to Visit Gulf Again ‘Soon’; Discussing Delaying Trip to Indonesia Again
The White House has shown disdain for what officials call the “theatrics” the punditocracy is demanding of the president — more emoting, more visits to the Gulf, fewer administration spokespeople.
White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told ABC News: “If the president thought that yelling at the top of his lungs would solve this crisis, he would stand on top of the White House and do that. But he believes this crisis will be solved by plugging the hole and responding to the damage done, not by method acting.”
And what of the myriad ceremonial events President Obama has hosted or participated in this month, ones Jon Stewart mocked him for earlier this week on The Daily Show?
Officials say they’re sensitive to the awkward dynamic — no leader wants to be seen as fiddling while Rome burns — which is why President Obama, sometimes perhaps a bit clumsily, tries to invoke the oil spill at these events, as he did at the ceremony for Paul McCartney last night.
But even if there weren’t an oil spill, officials say, the U.S. is fighting two wars and in the middle of an economic crisis. There’s always something more important to be focused on instead of, say, Jewish American Heritage Month or a celebration of the Duke University Blue Devils men’s basketball team. The unprecedented move would be to cancel all the ceremonial events, officials say.

“Spike Lee begs Obama to spew venom over oil spill
Director Spike Lee yesterday tried to get a rise out of the unflappable President Obama, whose unemotional approach to the Gulf oil-spill crisis is being criticized the world over.
“One time, go off!” Lee demanded of Obama yesterday on CNN.
“If there’s any one time to go off, this is it, because this is a disaster.”
The tough talk from the active Democratic supporter and director of “Do the Right Thing” and “Malcolm X” came as the president approved a new well in the Gulf.
Even Vice President Joe Biden conceded Obama has not appeared engaged enough throughout the six-week emergency, during which 43 million gallons of crude have been spewed into the Gulf.”

    O’narcissist:
“Any suggested help, advice, or concerned inquiry are immediately cast by the narcissist as intentional humiliation, implying that the narcissist is in need of help and counsel and, thus, imperfect and less than omnipotent. Any attempt to set an agenda is, to the narcissist, an intimidating act of enslavement. In this sense, the narcissist is both schizoid and paranoid and often entertains ideas of reference.
These – the lack of empathy, the aloofness, the disdain, the sense of entitlement, the constricted sense of humor, the unequal treatment and the paranoia – render the narcissist a social misfit. The narcissist is able to provoke in his milieu, in his casual acquaintances, even in his psychotherapist, the strongest, most avid and furious hatred and revulsion. To his shock, indignation and consternation, he invariably induces in others unbridled aggression.”

  18. BP is announcing that they ‘may’ have finally capped the oil well.
And guess what, Obama is announcing a visit to the Gulf tomorrow. Obviously, he had been briefed by BP that they were possibly going to succeed in the cap BEFORE they went public with this same announcement.
Obama, the narcissist, is going to the Gulf to take credit for this. Watch him do it.

  19. ET: “Would Duceppe care to answer that?”
Good question and good points, ET.
I asked Duceppe to answer a few in an e-mail I sent him a few days ago, and haven’t heard a word. ‘Not even an acknowledgment.
This guy is a piece of work: living off the avails of separation from Canada as he lives the high life and is guaranteed a gold-plated pension on the backs of ALL Canadians, even though he represents only one small, specific “identifiable” group — who, it seems, are well within their rights to participate in public life.
How come his “specific identifiable group” is OK to participate in public life but while specifically Christian groups aren’t?
Pourquoi, M. Duceppe? Repondez a nos questions, M. Duceppe.
