Welcome to the Wednesday (EBD) Late Nite Radio.
The success of so-called progressives in the last few decades in positioning themselves as the adjudicators of respect, tolerance, and freedom is surely the great irony of our age. Those who most typically call their opponents fascists, or some variant of the word, are the same people who feel perfectly justified in using mob rule to silence opposing views. This sort of cultural success in flipping the truth on its head even manifests in the most powerful office in the world: the current President has had a long association with a man who participated in the bombing of the Capitol buildings and the Pentagon, and yet high-ranking Democrats serving under him feel perfectly entitled to deign to characterize, with a straight face, regular mom and pop folks who disagree with the Democrats’ policies as being a radical fringe of extremists, while much of the legacy media happily parrots this bald-faced inversion of the truth.
This sorry state of affairs is at least partially the fault of conservatives who have played into the hands of unreasonable opponents by constantly asserting the need to maintain a spirit of cooperation, even as their opponents make volubly clear through their words and actions that they have absolutely no interest in doing the same. This assumption that compromise and bipartisanship is always the reasonable approach is badly mistaken because it not only presupposes, in the face of evidence to the contrary, that one’s opponents are equally well-intentioned and willing to meet halfway, but it also ignores the unpleasant reality that certain freedoms, once bargained away, may never be regained without bloodshed.
Tonight’s jaunty song selection is dedicated here to conservatives who think that cooperating and plea-bargaining with intransigent opponents is a win-win, that there is no such thing as us versus them, and that supineness will invite respect and facilitate compromise on the part of one’s opponent. Here’s Tom Lehrer’s fiercely satirical paean to fair play at any cost, Fight Fiercely Harvard.

Note how those that are opposed as well those that are conservative initiate their spiel by a preamble, that they “certainly don’t agree with all that Coulter say”, as though running a preemptive defense, just in case.
On another subject, Rutherford (CHQR Calgary) interviewed The Boss of the students in Ottawa, at the end part of the interview, Boss of the students characterized Coulter with all the current terminology used to describe anyone that they don’t agree with, basically “inciting hatred” and other such. Rutherford let the guy talk. Once he was finished, Rutherford asked the Boss, paraphrasing, “what you just said, is it not “hate speech”, the guy paused for a moment not knowing what to say, then said, “no”.
Sometime these people can give you a headache.
Thanks for your thoughts, ET.
I am aware that there remains a “natural” morality even if some points about what that is are disputed.
I was particularly impressed by the author’s ability to consistently describe post-modernism without actually using the term while he described the system to which most elites are attracted. For it is the post-modernist who is the threat to the culture.
It seems to me that:
1) there a few (if any) post-modernists who are not atheist
2) there are atheists who would describe themselves as either Randian Objectivists and/or Libertarians or would perhaps simply use the term Rationalists
3) the philosophical gaps between 1) and 2) are great – so great that (excepting for sexual morality) most or all in group 2) are more politically comfortable with conservative Christians than with those in group 1)
4) not all conservative Christians are aware of the enormity of the gap as described in 3)
Dan Lamothe, Dogs becoming essential in fight against IEDs
The Labrador retriever is all business when it’s time to work, however. Guided by hand signals and verbal commands, he sniffs out improvised explosive devices while working off-leash as part of the IED detector dog program, launched by the Marine Corps in 2007 after infantrymen issued an urgent-needs request for bomb-sniffing dogs that could deploy with units…
For the first time this year, most infantry battalions deploying to war zones have the dogs — all Labrador retrievers due to their drive to hunt, their obedience and their scent recognition. Oversight of the program was moved in the fall from the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory, based at Quantico, Va., to the Marine Corps Security Division at the Pentagon, and the Corps will launch a contract competition this year that will determine the IDD program’s long-term future…

John Ibbitson, U.S. to press for Canada to keep troops in Afghanistan
The U.S. government will ask Canada to keep as many as 500 to 600 troops in Afghanistan after this country’s military deployment in Kandahar ends in 2011.
Sources inside and outside the government say the formal request is expected toward the end of this year through NATO. The troops would act as military trainers and would most likely be located in Kabul. The deployment would not involve putting Canadian troops in harm’s way, but could nonetheless set off a rancorous national debate among Canadians and especially within the Liberal Party…
From “Secularism’s Ongoing Debt to Christianity” at American Thinker via Brent Weston @ 9:16 a.m.:
“To the extent that Western elites distance themselves from their Judeo-Christian cultural heritage in favor of secular constructs, and as they give deference to a multicultural acceptance that all beliefs are of equal validity, they lose their will to defend against a determined attack from another culture, such as from militant Islam.”
Thanks, Brent. It’s extremely gratifying to see the argument I’ve forwarded here many time but made much more eloquently. Our secular society has been living off the capital of the West’s Judeo-Christian foundational cultural values for so long now, that the capital’s almost run out.
As a practising Christian, I’ve watched with sadness, and some chagrin, my faith being denigrated, ridiculed, and slandered by leftist liberals, who seem to think that all of the rights and privileges our society enjoys started with Pierre Elliott Trudeau’s sadly lacking Charter of Rights and Freedoms, a Charter which, in fact, has left many of us on the right side of the political spectrum with FEWER rights and freedoms since the early ’70s.
BTW, it is the Feast of the Annunciaton today!

“Newspaper ad revenue plummets to 1986 level (Dinosaur Media DeathWatch™)
Newspaper advertising revenue plunged 27 percent last year to its lowest level since 1986, according to figures released Wednesday, reflecting the toll of the recession and a media shift that’s driving more marketing dollars to the Internet.
Newspapers sold $27.6 billion worth of ads in 2009, a figure that includes both print and online revenue. That’s down from $37.8 billion the year before, according to the Newspaper Association of America.
The picture is even more grim after adjusting for inflation. The $27 billion in revenue that newspapers received in 1986 would equal nearly $53 billion in today’s dollars.
Things did improve toward the end of 2009, raising hopes that the worst of the slump is over. Ad revenue in the final three months of the year fell 24 percent from a year earlier to $7.7 billion — the smallest quarterly percentage decline of 2009.
“Unfavorable trends for newspaper ad spending continued to diminish as the fourth quarter progressed, a sign that business conditions have begun to gradually improve,” NAA President and CEO John Sturm said in a statement.
Still, U.S. newspapers have a deep hole to climb out of, having seen ad revenue fall by nearly $22 billion, or 44 percent, in unadjusted dollars since 2006.
Although newspapers’ Web sites have offered a small but steadily growing revenue stream, even that was thrown into retreat by the recession. Online ad revenue fell almost 12 percent to $2.7 billion last year after a 2 percent drop in 2008.
The slump has hit other media as well, including magazines, broadcast television and even Internet titans such as Google Inc., which saw its breakneck revenue growth slow considerably.
With revenue shrinking, the corporate parents of many of the country’s biggest and most respected daily newspapers sought bankruptcy protection to reduce their debts.”

“Binyamin Netanyahu humiliated after Barack Obama ‘dumped him for dinner’
For a head of government to visit the White House and not pose for photographers is rare. For a key ally to be left to his own devices while the President withdraws to have dinner in private was, until this week, unheard of. Yet that is how Binyamin Netanyahu was treated by President Obama on Tuesday night, according to Israeli reports on a trip viewed in Jerusalem as a humiliation.
After failing to extract a written promise of concessions on settlements, Mr Obama walked out of his meeting with Mr Netanyahu but invited him to stay at the White House, consult with advisers and “let me know if there is anything new”, a US congressman, who spoke to the Prime Minister, said.
“It was awful,” the congressman said. One Israeli newspaper called the meeting “a hazing in stages”, poisoned by such mistrust that the Israeli delegation eventually left rather than risk being eavesdropped on a White House telephone line. Another said that the Prime Minister had received “the treatment reserved for the President of Equatorial Guinea”.
Left to talk among themselves Mr Netanyahu and his aides retreated to the Roosevelt Room. He spent a further half-hour with Mr Obama and extended his stay for a day of emergency talks to try to restart peace negotiations. However, he left last night with no official statement from either side. He returned to Israel yesterday isolated after what Israeli media have called a White House ambush for which he is largely to blame.”

O’narcissist:
“Minorities or “others” – often arbitrarily selected – constitute a perfect, easily identifiable, embodiment of all that is “wrong”. They are accused of being old, they are eerily disembodied, they are cosmopolitan, they are part of the establishment, they are “decadent”, they are hated on religious and socio-economic grounds, or because of their race, sexual orientation, origin … They are different, they are narcissistic (feel and act as morally superior), they are everywhere, they are defenceless, they are credulous, they are adaptable (and thus can be co-opted to collaborate in their own destruction). They are the perfect hate figure. Narcissists thrive on hatred and pathological envy.”

Mark Steyn, on the matter of some of the media’s coverage of niqab-ed Quebecer Naema Ahmed:
“Ignored in the rush to raise the rainbow banner of multiculturalism were, for example, the teacher’s insistence that she needed to see the pupil’s mouth move to teach her a new language; Mme Ahmed’s demand that male pupils remove themselves from her line of sight; her refusal to participate in discussions round a table; the school administration’s attempt to accommodate these various difficulties; and, since Mme Ahmed has now gone to the Quebec ‘Human Rights’ Commission, the right of the other students not to have their classes disrupted and their own attempts to learn French set back by one pupil’s intransigence.”
