A Moral Compass

Un-Liberal Prime Minister Stephen Harper, speaking in Oakville today:

Ahmadinejad’s declarations, particularly recently, particularly…not just the detention of Canadian citizens, not just the flagrant abuse of human rights, but his recent declarations – just disgraceful, insulting declarations denying the holocaust – there is no way I’m going to permit any official of the Government of Canada to be present and give any legitimacy to remarks by a leader like that.

President Ahmadinejad has said things, particularly about the state of Israel, the Jewish people, and the holocaust, that are absolutely repugnant. It is unfitting that somebody like that would be giving those kind of remarks before the United Nations General Assembly. Canada does not want to be equivocal at all in terms of our view on that; we find it disgraceful, unacceptable, and we’re going to be absolutely clear on that. There are other things that bother us as well beyond these repugnant comments; also, obviously, the crackdown in Iran on all kinds, any kind of legitimate dissent; the fiasco around the elections is quite disturbing. As well, the holding of a Canadian journalist – Mr. Bahari, I think it is – without charge continues to be unacceptable (and) we continue to demand his release. But as I say, there are times when things are being said in this world that it is important that countries that have a moral compass stand up and make their views known, and our absence there will speak volumes about how Canada feels about the declarations of President Ahmadinejad.

Thank you, Mr. Prime Minister.

  1. It’s amazing that we have a Prime Minister who will actually take a stand. Makes me feel very proud!
We should all be grateful that we have a strong man at the helm!

  2. Thank you, Mr. Harper. You are indeed, a prime minister to be honoured, someone with integrity, principles and honesty. You make us proud to be Canadian. Thank you.

  3. Thank you PM Harper!
How is the UN so united when we have such divisive characters aboard? The UN is a joke and should be treated as such.
Maybe it’s time our elected walk out of parliament when the bloc speak. I would think that we have more to fear from Iran than from the bloc???

  4. Well the lie before was that Canada didnt ever show leadership on the World Stage…..now I guess the attack line will be, thats not leadership, or stop showing leadership or I dont know what.
    My bet, Iggy congratulates him.

  5. Why are we paying any money to the United Nations for anything? It is proven to be corrupt, incompetent and under the control of the numerous thugs, thieves and dictators infecting the world? Canada should lead the abandonment of the UN to the garbage heap of history’s dumb ideas.

  6. From Hot Air comment section regarding Canada’s actions:
“The Israeli delegates should respect Islamic traditions, instead of walking out they should throw shoes. It’s a more effective way to express criticism.”
Lot of support from the commenters re: Canada’s position on the walkout.

  7. Well, no wonder our image is in tatters around the world. It’s kinda hard to stay in the high esteem of spineless wonders if you keep doing things that aren’t spineless.
    Way to go, PMSH!

  8. The walkout in itself is remarkable, but this speech by Prime Minister Harper defines his international policy. This speech is the real message to the tyrant from Iran.
Congratulations once again to Prime Minister Harper. He makes me proud to be Canadian.
    Hope Obama takes notes.

  9. This alone makes me proud of Mr. Harper, This man truly speaks for us Canadians. I hope other countries follow Harper’s decision, we can’t let our UN delegates listen to moonbat anti-semites like Ahmadinejad.

I was thinking the very same thing today. We should be holding our heads high for stuff like this, rather than what the socialists and separatists would have us doing.
It won’t be long in this world till it will be considered the right thing to do to just stand beside your Mother as she is kicked and beaten. Any retaliation toward the attacker would be seen as uncompassionate.

  11. Silly me…I checked out CTV.ca to see if there was some video of the walkout. Instead they have a story about the Tim Horton’s and allow put down comments about PMSH not being in New York where all the important people are.
    I left a comment that probably won’t pass inspection…
CTV… You are done like dinosaurs!

Yeah, wouldn’t that get the world’s attention, Canada’s Lawrence Cannon taking off his loafers and firing them at Ahmadinejad as he walks out.
Raise his profile in Quebec too!
    Good on Harper!
Now if only London Ontario’s Forest City Institute can get Harper as main speaker at Canada;’s very first American style TEA PARTY on October 3, in London Ontario regarding less government intervention or whatever….. wow!!

Nope. Iggy’s attack dog, special K, would rather Harper be right there at the UN and since he’s not, he’s not a world leader! WOW! What a moral compass.

  14. Kudos to Prime Minister Harper.
I think, though, that Prime Minister Harper should have referred to the Iranian Pretender to the Presidency as Mr. Ahmadinejad.
It is well known that Mr. Ahmadinejad wasn’t elected in a fair and open poll.
It would also be well if Prime Minister Harper and his government at least recognized the legitimate government, according to it’s Constitution, of Honduras.

  15. Brilliant, simply Brilliant. PM Harper has convictions and is willing to articulate clearly his position on this matter. Those apologists who call themselves leaders do not have any intestinal fortitude and big, yellow-stained marshmallows in the nether regions. Cheers.

  16. Every once in awhile Stephen Harper stands up on a world platform somewhere, and he shows the rest of the pathetic pile of western heads of state what real leadership is. Do you think any of them will notice?
Not damn, bloody likely, since his own country’s MSM won’t even show up.

  17. Harper didn’t call Ahmadinejad on his vow to ‘wipe Israel off the map”.
So does Harper think that the thought crime of holocaust denial is more detestable than calling for a Jihadi holocaust of the State of Isreal?
    Curious indeed.

  18. Doesn’t matter about the MSM- people around the world are noticing- “quality” always attracts attention.

  19. Barry’s speech just before Gadfly’s whacko ramble was a tour de force for utopian stupidity.
Absolutely the worst foreign policy speech made by an POTUS at the UN.

  20. The speech the Chosen One gave made him sound like the laziest man around. He wants to the world to change. THEY have to do it because God knows he is too lazy. He smacks of liberalism everytime he speaks and it is repugnant.

  21. I just did the google thing with the words Harper, speech, Oakville, and today and got a big fat 0 from the government run media(as rush likes to call them) Oh, about 2/3rd of the way down the page the commie brainwashing cult had something about a speech from 2003.

  22. And to think that this pearl of conservative wisdom came from my home town, Oakville, Ontario, that is steeped in liberal weenie douchebaggery, warms the cockles of my expatriate heart.
God Bless the Saint of Alberta, Stephen Harper.

  23. 100% agreement with posters here, especially oz who insists on CDN recognition of legal gov’t of Honduras

  24. Now this is LEADERSHIP.
Sadly stephen Harper and Canada have become the real defenders of the free world. Sadly because we lack the power to exert that leadership on the world stage. Sadly because the USs leadership has abandoned the role.
A while back a commenter was arguing that the cpc had not done anything different than the liberals – well here is just one more example. And here is a reason for hardliners to hold their pur Laine conservative fire so that a conservative prime minister can exist.

  25. There is one really admirable and respectable leader in North America, and it’s Stephen Harper.
I’m with LT. If I could vote for him I would.

In synchronized attacks, the Liberal Party issued a press release denouncing the Tim Hortons visit, while MP Bonnie Crombie and a handful of Liberals carrying United Nations flags protested outside the PM’s announcement”.
