  1. According to CNN, 34 stations were actually shut down yesterday, and 206 are scheduled to be shutdown in a few days. The NY Times has nothing on this story yet, though it is still covering the “Zelaya” story with righteous zeal.
Side note: Why was my post on the “organic food” thread held for review? I thought it was rather innocuous, though it did contain a link to the NY Times website. Are you reviewing links out of a concern for security?

  2. The spam filter makes the decisions as to whose comments are held for review. Sometimes it’s just inclusion of a simple, innocent word that does it.

  3. Come to think of it, Kate, I did refer to the p-e-n-e-t-r-a-t-i-o-n of Europe by Islam.

  4. Stupidest goddamned blogger on the internet. You and a hundred of your smartest commenters wouldn’t last twenty minutes in a debate on the matter.

  5. YAAM You don’t have a blog and if you did you couldn’t find a hundred commenters to have a debate. Not that you would debate freedom of speech in the first place but…

  6. Aye, first it was yammadamadingdong in Iran, now it is that attempt at DNA stacking in Venezuela.

  7. when i read Ortega this morning i assumed it was our friend in Nicaragua cutting capers….now i see now it’s Chavez’ attorney general….
oh well…i’m sure censorship will arrive in Managua sooner than later…..prolly already there in one form or another…

  8. and even the left in Venezuela don’t agree on how to tackle this nincompoop.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teodoro_Petkoff
in Venezuela, Teodoro Petkoff is highly regarded still, a former terrorist and former communist party member who started his own party and has run against Hugo… from the left. His newspaper is in both print and internet, http://www.talcualdigital.com
an english analysis by Daniel Duquenal can be read here…
    http://daniel-venezuela.blogspot.com/2009/07/cesnsorship-law-ley-censura-petkoff.html
    Teodoro’s statement:
“The bill must be sent to all governments of America, all the media world, so everyone can see for themselves in front of what dictatorial and totalitarian monstrosity our country has been placed. No need to even comment. It’s so obvious, so naked in its repression, that it is self-explanatory. For us, Venezuelans, this “law” is a call to arms. It is to be hoped that everyone is listening.”
amusing that “YAAM” comments regarding the length of a debate on this matter, while Hugo simply bids to stifle and not permit the debate at all… peas in a pod.
The Government of Colombia shows no sign of backing down from their recent discovery of Saab built rocket launchers that were sold to Venezuela in the 1980’s being found in the possession of FARC in Colombia. (the serial numbers were intact, and Hugo has no idea how they got to Colombia…) and so it was expected that Venezuela would enact new border rules, governing the importation of food and goods from Colombia, especially at the San Antonio (San Cristóbal) / Cucata crossing. It was reported in yesterdays El Universal newspaper (I’ve lost the link.) that the Chamber of Commerce in San Antonio is reporting that all basic foodstuffs are in short supply, and meanwhile, the food is across the connecting bridge in Colombia.
I fear that Kate’s assessment of “How Deep Señor Chavez”? is not so distant, nor unlikely, as Hugo simply blames others for his problems. The current balance of trade between the two is of 7.2 billions in trade, more than 6 billions are food and clothing and natural gas going to Venezuela, and 1 billion going to Colombia. Yesterday Hugo stated that if Uribe isn’t quiet, he’ll shut the natural gas pipeline off… oh well, if only Hugo understood that hunger isn’t so easy to shut off.

  9. What Venezuela’s Ortega is doing is nothing short of a Democratic Party wet dream. Don’t think for one minute that Obama would hesitate to shut down opposing media if he thought he could get away with it. Most Venezuelans are unarmed. Not so in the good ol’ USA.
One thing all slaves have in common … they don’t own guns.

  10. The videos are really ugly, similar to what radical feminists (read socialists) did in Montreal a few years back, throwing soiled tampons on the altar of a Catholic cathedral. As for the lady “lawmaker”, I would have belted her so hard only her shoes would be left on the podium.

  11. YAAM is still ticked that the Soviet Union collapsed and hopes to have that system here.

  12. It still stuns me that people were worried that Bush would have made women wear burqas (like, I’m sure some women wouldn’t have cowered low enough for that) and destroy of freedom of speech yet no one bats an eyelid for this bozo. What the hell?

  13. No wonder Obama was slobbering all over Chavez.
This is what he intends for Conservative talk radio. Anyone named a Conservative will be called extreme right winger or hate monger. They will introduce a restricting “Fairness doctrine” or some other Marxist rubbish, than bypass the Constitution like their doing on heath care voting in bills nobody reads.
Yet we lived threw 8 years of Bush derangement Syndrome & endured the radical lefts insanity for that long. Yet they can’t stand one criticism? They are delicate flowers while where haters.
Obama no doubt yearns for his own day, when he will be able to utilize the bulldozer on Americans in the quest for Utopia.

  14. I was reading the posts to the end with the intent to post that I thought that I’d heard that the Empty Suit had plans on Government control of the media.
Fairness Doctrine indeed. I build up an audience, spend the time to make it a regular thing and then the Empty Suit says that his Lackey HAS TO BE HOSTED on this site.
Blow it out your butt and go make your own station!!

  15. Stupidest goddamned blogger on the internet. You and a hundred of your smartest commenters wouldn’t last twenty minutes in a debate on the matter.

    dear Y A A Moron:
measurements of ‘smart’ dont apply to me. Im in a class of my own. care to go a round of a game I call ‘google trivia’? ’tis that 80s board game intersecting the ubiquitous web. ie ‘ask me a Q and then lets see what google results show’.
I never lost a round of the former and so far batting 1000 in the latter.
except sports trivia. ‘sport’ is the sound when you pop a carbuncle.

  16. -“Freedom of expression must be limited,” Ortega said.
-Chavez denies that he intends to silence critics, saying his government fully respects freedom of expression.
    Cognitive dissonance?
    No.
It is true that liberty is precious; so precious that it must be carefully rationed.
    ~Vladimir Lenin
Free speech for me, but not for thee.
(says the tyrant who gets the only ration)

  17. I thought that YAAM was going to come back and prove his point. Yeah, right. No I didn’t. Hey YAAM, a couple of the commenters here are even smarter than Moe, though I will admit we have a couple of Curlies and Larries.
Choose your topic YAAM. Say something. Anything. We’ll debate it.

  18. The irony, which YAAM won’t get , is that he was exercising freedom of speech, and the ‘right’ to be offensive.
Now go try that in Venezuela.

  19. On this wk’s Michael Coren show, which I quit watching but stumbled upon, one of the Cdn guests decried that in the U.S. there were no centre to left stations (my words) only radio and cable shows like Fox News that are extreme right.
You knew right away that he didn’t watch Fox regularly enough to know it is far more fair and balanced that CNN and those other horrid networks.
This is a common complaint lately and it points to the time that there will be censorship ala the Democrats, if O is in office long enough.
That Canadians are buying into the O fable is too much to compute.
This panelist would most likely be the type who would haul out all the fairytales about Palin with the same straight face.

  20. I yaam what I yaam and that’s all what I yaam… ~ Popeye(the sailor)
    Sorry, couldn’t help myself.

  21. I am shocked and disappointed that YAAM didn’t come back and school us all on debating.
