Plagiarism At The Conference Board of Canada

Nice work by Michael Geist;“The role of the Ontario government obviously raises questions about taxpayer dollars being used to pay for a report that simply recycles the language of a U.S. lobby group paper.”

  1. I just got rid of windows and am now using UBUNTU.
Its like a breath of fresh air.
I will never go back to paying gates for anything ever again!!!

  2. “So being flat prevents you from singing, I mean, just for joy? Can’t we share singing, just for joy? I mean, people used to do that a lot, in the past, and now we don’t so much. I know, I know, I’m such a conservative.”
It doesn’t prevent me at all, I sing along to all music that I love, even music I wouldn’t even download.
Thankfully since I generally listen to metal when listening to music that even has vocals, I don’t have to worry much about singing “tonally” 🙂
Was the thief comment aimed at Loki or myself?

  3. I follow Geist’s work all the time …. he’s pretty sharp and not much in the way of policy on telecom or related issues like this digital piracy problem gets by him.
The problem I have with the CBofC report is that it is self serving. The board has been shilling for the record industry since this story began to evolve the IIPA report was a natural choice for them to parrot because it serves ALL of their purposes.
Copyright holders should be able to expect that their property will be recognized and protected.
That does not mean that the self serving industry should get to define that protection.
And that is where the trouble lies.

  4. well now, being a gypsy and all, lucky I never learned much about computers and such, as theft is a way of life and a rite for us gypsies:-))))

  5. I almost feel like buying Iggys book so I can line by line google it to see where he stole it from.

  6. “The Conference Board of Canada bills itself as “the foremost, independent, not-for-profit applied research organization in Canada. Objective and non-partisan. We do not lobby for specific interests.”
    >> I’ve held the opinion for sime time that these pseudo-research consultive organs of the state are thinly veneered policy brokers which are used to either justify a direction bureaucracy was moving eventually, or to push the political agenda of some well financed special interest patron.
In this case the so called plagiarism seems purposeful in two fold design. First it attempt to blame the free internet and free independent users for gross plagiarism and copyright theft. A delicious irony consider they plagiarized another org’s report to do so. This gives governments the justification to further regulate, restrict and corporatize the free expression and fair use independent community environment of the internet.
Second, the word for word repetition of the IIPA seems to indicate that US-UK corporate giants who wear the hat of culture moguls, have bought themselves some political pressure in this nation. This paper is nothing more than software, music and film conglomerates lobbying to have government attack the “fair use” consumer doctrine of laissez-faire capitalism and install the new total criminal liability personal use licencing meme of the new corporate feudalism.
Interesting convergence of bureaucratic and corporate agendas in controlling freedoms on the electronic frontier.

I hope your wrong but I dont think you are.
The internet is way to dangerous to be in the hands of mere peasants, they will have to bring it under their control somehow.

  8. Wait a second. You guys actually agree with the left on this one? That’s kind of cool.
So why the hell are we having a problem with this? Can’t we all get our act together and tell these guys where to get off?

  9. I thought that “singing flat” — not being able to sing because one is flat — referred to not being able to sing because one isn’t a Dolly Parton, or a Shania Twain, or an Aretha Franklin.
‘Sorry. I missed the gist of it.

    John,
That is not so easy… read NAFTA… You could appoint an Action committee that meets every 10 years, on the third Tuesday of March, but only if its a full moon & you hear the cry of a lone Wolf.
