No, You Weren’t Mis-hearing

Via email –
“Was I mis-hearing, or did the great orator flub the oath of office?”
(Nonetheless, this will be a designated “good will” thread – an opportunity to extend our best wishes to the new US President for a safe and successful four years, followed by the longest string of paid speaking engagements in American political history.)

  1. The words repeated by Mr. Obama was slightly different than the words put out by the Chief Justice, but the intent, I think was the same. I wish Mr. Obama good luck with his term in office, as I did for Mr. Bush’s term. As I once explained to a relative who had moved to Ontario (Toronto even) and then promply lost his mind;; the Americans as our closest friends and allies have elected a leader and we as their friends and allies should respect their decision and treat the President of the U.S. with the respect and dignity that the office is entitled to. We were discussing George Bush but the same sentiment holds true to whomever the American people chose.

  2. “Was I mis-hearing, or did the great orator flub the oath of office?”
    Kate-
You’re so full of sh**. This is no good will thread, the very title and content of the article is ill willed

  3. Was I mis-witnessing or did the great decider flub the office?
See ya chimpy. Go home, clear whatever brush still remains and wait for the subpoenas… Oh and you might want to avoid international travel.

  4. Good Luck to the new President.
    Having said that…
The lamps are going out all over the world. We shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.

  5. Obama gets a pass – the *Chief Justice* flubbed it, by misplacing the word “faithfully”. The oath as stated in the constitution is,
“(…) I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States (…)”
This is no doubt what Obama was expecting to hear and to say. The Chief Justice said,
“I will execute the office of President of the United States faithfully”
Obama was clearly thrown by the flub, and paused for a moment. The Chief Justice then flubbed it *again*; IIRC in repeating the phrase he said,
“I will execute faithfully the office of President of the United States”
Which is what Obama finally said.
John Roberts is going to be kicking himself for four years for that. If you listen to all the available recordings of past inaugurations, you never hear the oath flubbed, by either a President or the administering justice.

  6. Good luck to the man. He’ll need it.
With the expectations that leftards have bestowed on the poor bugger, the greatest leader the world has ever seen will not live up to the hype.
I almost feel sorry for him.

  7. Actually, John Roberts flubbed the oath. Should be:
“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
Can’t blame Obama for being confused. Republican conspiracy, no doubt.
Just the same, I can’t help but think that this is bellwhether of what’s to come.

  8. I wish Barak Obama and for his family to stay safe and be well in the presidency.
But my greatest fear is that the USA will morph into a socialist state under the Democrats.

  9. Whatever our political views, this day is historical, and the occassion of the inauguration truly awesome.
As someone old enough to remember the struggles of the 1960’s, the hopes for racial harmony, and the tragedies of Martin Luther King and John and Bobby Kennedy, I cannot help but be amazed and overwhelmed. Barack Obama’s achievement is indicative of the greatness of America.
The cynics will have their say soon enough, and the critics will begin their necessary work. But in this moment there is a hope for the fulfillment of our better visions.
God bless President Barack Obama, and God bless America.

  10. Though I wouldn’t have voted for him I *do* wish him the best of success in his presidency – the stakes are too high to wish otherwise.
Wishing him success however does not mean I give him a pass on any issue, nor does it make him immune from criticism.

  11. Nothing outstanding or memorable about the inauguration except that a 50% white black man who identifies mostly with his black ancestry has been elected to the highest office in a land that has so recently been cruelly racist. If a man called Barack Hussein Obama has been chosen by God to lead them at this time, then today I can be gracious enough to be glad for them and wish him and those who are filled with hope nothing but SUCCESS. God bless them, everyone.

  12. I genuinely wish him well, as I would the leaders of any of our allies, regardless of political stripe.
You always wish well to your friends.
For all of our sakes I hope he is an above average President.
The genius of the american system is that he will be judged within 2 years. He will face a congress that either reinforces the good work he may do in the next 2 years or he will face an oppsition congress based on 2 years of less than stellar work.
Like anyone who takes that office, he has his work cut out for him and he can’t complain that he hasnt been given a start with the wind at his back. I havent seen a mandate or willingness to help lie this since….well reagans 84 election I think.
He has the tide and the crew, lets see what the captain does with it.

  13. Joe Molnar says “But my greatest fear is that the USA will morph into a socialist state under the Democrats.”
The US can’t afford to morph into a socialist state.

  14. “And true to form, the first nasty comment is from a leftie! Are you people never happy?”
The self loathing attitude of the left is where this nastiness originates. If you hate yourself, you can not love others.
Way to go Barak. Good luck!:-)

  15. The inaugural address was surprisingly unimpressive. The Wizard of Ob has exhausted his rhetorical capacity. So, it’s all downhill from here in the District of Change.

  16. Watching Global’s coverage of Obama’s speech, the e-mails being televised are amazing.According to most,he’s an extraordinary man,and the only thing that seems to set him apart, according to these posters,is his skin color.I’m sure that the MSM’s coverage of Mr. Harper and Obama’s meeting will have a sickening spin.”Look how cool and confident Obama is compared to the cold and rigid Harper”.”One could see how uncomfortable Harper was with Obama,Harper being such good friends with Bush.”

  17. There are paragraphs of his speech that could have been written for Ronald Reagan.
    Smoke screen ?
    Maybe.
    But, maybe not.
He’s a pretty smart guy, and the crash course in how-it-all-really-works that he’s been receiving during the last few months may have sedated the attack dog and awakened the Patriot.
    We’ll see.

  18. I wish him luck – I’m impressed with his pick of Paul Volcker as an economic advisor – it shows a serious and pragmatic side that was a delightful surprise IMHO.

  19. the new mantra will be
    “Change is the Same”
four legs good , two legs better
the MSM is so part of this ,

  20. i’m sorry….but the man has zero gravitas….and to me only the thinnest charisma…his resume’ gives me a more than lingering pause….and his prior associations are far far far less respectable than one would expect in a leader…
i certainly wish the American people the very best but i don’t believe any good but much bad will come of this administration…

  21. I saw the swearing in and commented to my wife that he’ll be getting the pass that George Bush never would.
I stuck around for the first 5 minutes of his speech and my reaction to most of his sentences was “horse sh%t.” But he did mention that America’s dependence on foreign oil was strengthening her enemies, so that was the one thing I could agree with.

  22. I will start by saying that although I would not have voted for him, I wish for only good things for the United States under President Obama. Despite my reservations over some of his stated policies, I think a lot of good can come out of the symbolism of his presidency, if nothing else. As to the line-flubbing, Chief Justice Roberts did screw up, but the first flub went to Obama who raced ahead of the Chief Justice and started reciting the first line before Roberts had finished. That’s probably why Roberts screwed up the second part. Does it matter? Not really, although if George Bush had done it, you can be sure the commentators and BDS sufferers would be loudly proclaiming this as more evidence of his idiocy. Another little thought entered my mind. Why couldn’t the Democrats put on an inauguration that stuck to the schedule. Obama was almost 10 minutes late taking the oath. Did anyone else think that the “original” string composition sounded like “Dance, dance wherever you may be. I am the Lord of the Dance said he…” And that poetess? Eminently forgettable.

  23. May Obama have more luck and more substance and turn out to be at worst, a caretaker president and at best, a truly historical president in the best sense of the term.
May he and his family stay safe.

  24. Obama is already fighting with Pelosi.
I would consider it a badge of honour to be on the other side of whatever Pelosi is on. This bodes well for Obama.
When a politician runs on a platform of “Hope and Change you can believe in” you can take it to the bank (preferably a CDN one) that the translation is: “You can believe that there is no hope of change.” In this case, that’s good.
All my worst fears about Obama seem to be misplaced. He’s thrown his most frothing lunatic supports under the bus and embraced the centre.
Good on him. The next 4 years may be decent. I for one see Obama (at the very least) as no worse than McCain would have been but with the possibility that he’ll be better. Time will tell.
At the very least, we’ll have the more pleasant tone from the media as they give Obama the full Monica for what they crucified Bush for doing.

  25. Dave H said,
…Chief Justice Roberts did screw up, but the first flub went to Obama who raced ahead of the Chief Justice and started reciting the first line before Roberts had finished.
That’s probably why Roberts screwed up the second part.
Does it matter? Not really, although if George Bush had done it, you can be sure the commentators and BDS sufferers would be loudly proclaiming this as more evidence of his idiocy.

You are absolutely right, that is exactly what I saw and heard.
Obama was the first one to make a mistake.
and you are also right on the second part, Bush would not get a pass for that.
    Lefties are already making excuses for Obama on yahoo answers;
    “Obama was nervous!”
    ” he is only human”
” I would be nervous too!”
( Yahoo answers was the first result for the google search ” Obama messed up oath” )
Where was that nice understanding attitude in the last 8 years???

  26. As a Canadian who enjoys a wonderful quality of life due to American protection and commerce, I truly and sincerely hope for a successful presidency for Mr Obama.
As a Canadian who gets easily confused though, I’m wondering when the MSM will go forth and spread the word on what a ‘homophobic’ man he must be to disagree with gay marriage. I don’t feel he is homophobic but I know our PM was vilified and labelled as such. Seems this issue is no longer important (irrelevant, really) since THE ONE doesn’t support it. Hypocrisy. (FWIW, I agree with the incoming president. Does that make me homoph…., aww nevermind)
Good luck, America. Sincerely. And that’s for everything y’all do for us. 😉

  27. All Canadians should all wish POTUS Obama well because so much of what he does will affect the prosperity of our country also.
    I certainly wish him well.
And now the hard work begins.
“Just because the Declaration of Independence says everyone is entitled to the pursuit of happiness, it doesn’t mean the government should finance the chase.”
Hey, tell that to Wall Street!

  28. I await the ACLU’s lawsuit against Obama for his repeated inclusion in his inauguration of the word “GOD” without appending “evil republican” or “Bush” or “fascist” to it.
It can’t be just that God is peachy when it’s a democrat, can it? Noooooo. Hypocrisy from the leftards?

  29. I thought that Barack handled the flub very well and with a sense of humility. I think that most viewers saw it that way.
I also thought that he was very cordial with Bush.

  30. I have the greatest respect for the United States of America and the Office of the President.
Obama, on the other hand, will have to earn that respect first.

  31. So cute to hear that Obama has an imaginary friend too. Will Bill Maher interview him for his next movie?
Seriously, I wish him well. His speech was more centrist than I expected. He comes across as pragmatic, not an ideologue.

  32. Just
    not cool dude:-(
“Obama was almost 10 minutes late taking the oath.”
A brotha late for an appointment. Hmmm…

  33. Here are my (edited) hopes and wishes for President Obama:
“May you show potential for unbounded improvement and know the value of political capital. May those who serve under you demonstrate an eagerness to comment on your work. Let it be said of you that you have a wide variety of interests and pursuits. We hope that your worth to the country can only have been imagined and that you will have been responsible for deep changes in political dynamics. We trust that after your first term, a reevaluation of your specific assignments will be in order. May you leave your mark on the nation, and may your usefulness to the union be self-evident.”
    God bless America. Please.

  34. We should all wish him the best and remember that most of us wouldn’t want to be in his shoes. There should be a giant bottle of Advil made available for him in the desk drawer of the oval office.

  35. the chief justice flubbed it worse by voting against illegal seach and seizure by police in the u.s. now the police can use any evidence obtained to convict someone who may be innocent or guilty, guilty.

  36. re John Luft @ 12:53
In 1945, the UK could not afford to be socialist either. It was literally bankrupt after WW2. It nonetheless tried to become the socialist utopia for the next 25 years.

  37. I GUESS YOU DID MIS-HEAR
And true to form, the first nasty comment is from a leftie! Are you people never happy?
A leftie?, me? Not F’in likely.
At any rate, without question, and true to form, it was your comment that was the first nasty comment. For the record, you said “Was I mis-hearing, or did the great orator flub the oath of office?”

  38. Hey, the guy may surprise us yet. He’s already backtracked somewhat on Iraq and Guantanamo, and when the reality of his situation and the way things really are sink further in, we may well see a lot of teeth-gnashing on the left and among the grievance set.
Remember, only Nixon could go to China, etc…

  39. As W said in his Larry King interview:
“Good luck to him. I tried to shut down Guantanamo, too.”
Heard one comment today about what the loony left hates W for most: the fact the war in Iraq was won.
Obama did not contradict that fact in his inauguration speech.
