President-elect Barack Obama said this weekend that he does not expect to close Guantanamo Bay in his first 100 days in office. “I think it’s going to take some time and our legal teams are working in consultation with our national security apparatus as we speak to help design exactly what we need to do,” Obama said in an exclusive “This Week” interview with George Stephanopoulos, his first since arriving in Washington.
“It is more difficult than I think a lot of people realize,” the President-elect explained. “Part of the challenge that you have is that you have a bunch of folks that have been detained, many of whom who may be very dangerous who have not been put on trial or have not gone through some adjudication. And some of the evidence against them may be tainted even though it’s true. And so how to balance creating a process that adheres to rule of law, habeas corpus, basic principles of Anglo American legal system, by doing it in a way that doesn’t result in releasing people who are intent on blowing us up.”

Well, that’s good news. I really don’t want to see Omar Khadr again. Heard his family was out on Sabbath cheerleading for Hamas.
I think and really want to see that Obama’s performance will exceed the expectations of a certain group of people…those that did not vote for him.
However, it would be even better to see that he disappoints those that did vote for him, and if this is the case, there might be then be “hope” for the US (and as a consequence, Canada as well).
Maybe he’s changed his mind and will now work to close down the really big prison – Castro’s Cuba.

The Supreme Court of the USof A refuses to look at Obama’s qualifications to even run for president ! That doesn’t exonerate him , that just means they don’t want to touch it with a 10 foot pole! Post election, we now have the Obamessiah suggesting matters are…ahem…complicated… and that, gee whiz, some of these folks we’re detaining might just be dangerous.
Zog, during the campaign, Obama pandered to the left regarding the closure of Gitmo. The left simply wants the place shut down, and the detainees freed … and Big O pandered to that constituency. He knew damn well these people were in Gitmo for a reason. This is not a case, as you suggest, of a politician changing his mind upon sober second thought. IMO

Obama shows up and says “We aren’t broke! Look, we still have all of these credit cards!” and a majority of Americans say he’s right.
I wish instead of saying “we are going to run trillion dollar deficits for many years” he would say “We are going to borrow a trillion dollars a year from the Chinese for many years.”
In four years we better not have high unemployment after borrowing four trillion dollars from the Chicoms, which we will have to repay by cutting social security.

He is not President Yet! Things are not normal on the Western Front (AZ). Ugly is a better descriptor. This place should be shut down immediately. In fact, it should never have been put into operation in the first place. Why build a detention centre on a tropical island with a climate so agreeable that many use it as a tourist destination?
Alaska would have been a far more suitable locale for the warehousing of these animals. During the winter months, one wouldn’t even have to close the gate. Want to escape you terrorist scumbags? Have at ‘er. If the weather didn’t eliminate the escapees, the wildlife surely would have.
Can you imagine the howling from the left if the detainees were given a choice … prayer mat or parka?
