“Solar cycle 24: where are you?”

“Solar cycle 24: where are you?”

Update – “Looking at the data to 1932, it was clear to me that what we are seeing today for levels doesn’t exist in the record.”
We have a definite experiment going on here. For those who argue that the yellow ball and its various conditions affect climate more than condiions on earth this is the time to test theories.
There appears, repeat appears, to be correlations. But being honest I will say that the mechanisms are still lacking, certainly lacking proof.
But one thing is clear the step by step march that was sold to us a few years ago, inevitable increases in CO2 meant inevitable increases in temp is definitely not correct, so can we put that one to rest. they thought they had the mechanism nailed….ooops…..
Not to say CO2 doesnt act as a GHG….it does, as does water vapour (the majpority) etc. the question is does adding Co2 at current levels change anything? Looks like there might be larger natural forces a work. It doesnt invalidate that perhaps manamade CO2 needs to be reduced, or controlled, but it likely isnt the planet ending runaway train that some would posit.
One way or another it definttely isnt “settled”
Anyone got any crrent graphs, like up to Dec 31st of CO2?
Algore and Dr. Fruitfly called me up the other day about this very issue. They told me the fumes from my truck went all the way to the sun and slowed down the rate of solar fusion.
I said “Well don’t that beat all!”
Thats okay,Phantom.I’m sure the little piece of shit electric car down the road that hasn’t moved in 2 weeks will cancel out any fumes from your truck.
And isn’t it the earth’s rotation that’s affecting the sun?
On the tail of that bad news for the AGW alarmists, we have this bit of news just in: “Birdwatchers’ delight as Arctic snowy owl is spotted in freezing England for first time”
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1105624/Birdwatchers-delight-Arctic-snowy-owl-spotted-freezing-England-time.html
You got the call to Phantom?
I gotta get the cows to stop passing gas.

Sounds like Kate just shifted to ‘high gear’
on Big Al Gore in ’09.
Good stuff Kate!
By the way …….
UN-Gore-Madoff type Ponzi Carbon credits for sale, hurry, hurry . . . . . . before that bubble bursts!
AGW be damned.
No sunspots. How much power does Bush have anyway?
As for natural forces having greater power, natural forces will beat human effort with a wisp of wind.
No sunspots? It’s Bush’s fault. Rove convinced him to use the Gaza incursion as a distraction. It’s the old “wag the fusion” gambit.
Because of Karl Rove we are all going to freeze our butts off during this period of runaway global warming.
Our ONLY hope is that Barry H. will give Al G. a trillion dollars and send him to the Sun for a summit meeting on solar cooling.
Things must be really bad for the Global Warming crowd when the Huffington Post calls Al Gore out.

Meh. This has all been accounted for in the then_a_miracle_happens() subroutine in the global climate models.
Man, I sure hope everyone is saving that graph for future reference and discussion! If you were a Gov’t funded toadie, you’d have to be out of your mind or on drugs to stick your neck out with a prediction like that. Sort of like the ‘End of Days’ cult predictions…”oops” would be more appropriate than “NOAA”.
Another Maunder Minimum would be brutal !!
We may soon be wishing for some Global Warming. Warming, that Gore & Suzuki & the Media are trying so hard to halt. Halt, by taking our money and lifestyles. Halt, my ass – just taking our money.
[ The Maunder minimum is the name given to a period of extreme solar inactivity that occurred between 1645 and 1710. Of particular interest is that this period of inactivity corresponds closely to one of the coldest periods of the so-called “Little Ice Age” in Europe, a time of long, cold winters that caused severe hardships in the pre-industrial revolution world. This has led scientists to extensively study the possible influences of solar activity on terrestrial climate, as well as examine other stars for evidence of activity cycle behavior similar to the Sun’s.] Science Encyclopedia
[..]
[ Despite the ongoing controversy, for which there is decidedly no definitive answer as of the year 2000, there is no doubt the Maunder minimum years were a time of significant misery in Europe, with the long, harsh winters leading to shortened growing seasons, failed crops, and widespread famine. Whether, or to what degree, the Sun is responsible for this, is an important question for atmospheric scientists and astronomers to tackle over the next few decades.] SE
Question: If Cooler weather caused “significant misery in Europe, with the long, harsh winters leading to shortened growing seasons, failed crops, and widespread famine” would warming then not lead to better conditions for Mankind ?
Blood on their hands ! The Mother Of All Fraud Suits coming soon !

Nicely played, ural!
to my eyes the trend is looking like the bottom level of activity is being reached – later than anticipated/hoped certainly, but a bottom nonetheless. Let’s hope it’s going to turn upwards soon – it’s cold out!!

“Just two weeks into winter, Winnipeg has as much snow now as it did all winter last year, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. said.
To the west in Saskatchewan, the temperature was minus 40 Sunday morning in Saskatoon, but with winds, felt like minus 63, the CBC said.”
Saskabush and Winterpeg, how LOW CAN YOU GO? Limbo Weather!
-40 C with windchill to -63 C; we’ll call it -60 C for CBC exaggeration.
Ain’t winter wonderful? I still love that show “March of the Penguins” though, with the -62 C Antarctic storms.
“For an additional two months, the males huddle together for warmth, and incubate their eggs. They endure temperatures approaching (−62 °C (−79.6 °F)), and their only source of water is snow that falls on the breeding ground. When the chicks hatch, the males have only a small meal to feed them, and if the female does not return, they must abandon their chick and return to the sea to feed themselves. By the time they return, they have lost half their weight and have not eaten for four months. The chicks are also at risk from predatory birds such as skuas.”
I can see some T-shirt sales with the moniker:

I survived winter 2008/09!
Mind you, you may have to wait until summer to wear them!
AGW has been canceled permanently due to poor computer modeling.

I’d be very interested a graph showing the predicted values from; 6, 8, 12, 24, 36 months ago to see how poorly the tax payer funded predictions are.
Jsut like sea ice. People who make predictions and then revised predictions are never held to task over their predictions, after all they are just predictions. But when your predictions are wrong it means something is wrong in your method, if your predictions can be wrong some times whats to say your “accurate” ones weren’t fluke?
A great saying about a broken watch comes to mind.
“Saskabush & Winterpeg is Penguin country, home of the TRUE NORTH, STRONG & FREE!”
But what’s with all the puffins in Torontostan?
felis….
there hiding there poop don’t you know !!!
duffman, I see where you are coming from, but really, look at that prediction curve and ask yourself what science is involved in plotting something so obviously wrong onto the observed data? Its the kind of conclusion that first year physics students might make just so they could get their paper in on time.
For fun, and picking up on Justthinkin’s comment, has anyone seen a Prius out on the road recently? Reports from California last year were not complimentary about its handling on icy surfaces.
This baby’s a dyin’.

Looked at the update, interesting graph, always interesting when there are new highs and new lows..here is more going on though because remmber that 1998 was “the hottest year on record”….now it was a warm year and yet it is just after the minimum.
We all know that this was affected b the super strong EL Nino….there seems to be a link between the polarity and the el Nino….cant remember all of the details but my suspicion is there is more than “one wheel to the machine”.
Hence my suspicion of the simple explaination, although I like simple explainations, of CO2 inceases.
By the way there are pretty large swings of CO2 throughout the year but that doesnt seem to get acounted for in the models…you would think if the atmosphere were that sensitive to it there would be even wilder swings…but thats another story.
Everyone is still theorizing and handwaiving….this is what fuels my relectance about grand schemes to transf wealth around based on carbon taxes and carbon indulgences and carbon swaps etc.
Nassim Taleb said one must have courage to say “I don’t know”….well in the cliamte change debate I don’t know, and I don’t think anyone else does either, they just won’t admit it.
I don’t want to alarm anyone but the total yearly number of sunspots from years 1710 to 1713 were 3-0-0-2, respectively.
We have been here, done this, before.
CNN had a piece on global warming today (on Lou Dobbs) — basically noting that it appears that the science is not quite “settled.” I am not sure what their position has been previously, but I thought it was a real breakthrough to see a MSM source picking up the ball on questioning the theory of AGW.
Not to worry … the next faux science hysteria will be about the diminished ionization at the North pole ….. they’ve already tried to sell this as the beginning of the end where our atmosphere will be blown away by solar winds … just like Mars’ …. hmmmhmmm … that’s what they said “Just like Mars”…..
The problem will be crops this year. Long winter, late spring, early fall, recipe for bad, bad harvest.
Too many people get their science from journalists…that’s why all the hysteria. The scientific community isn’t one big group of people scheming away. If you want to read real scientific work you need to read scientific articles. Use google scholar and rid yourself of the burden of biased news articles.
Stephen: The large swings of CO2 throughout the year is accounted for…it’s because in the spring and summer plants are actively growing and taking up CO2, in the fall and winter they are not, only respiring, like us, so releasing CO2.
Ron in Kelowna: “take our lifestyles”?? You mean the possessions you rely on for your identity?
Justthinkin: The electric car wouldn’t be such a piece of shit if it wasn’t bought up by big oil and left to sit.
RW: Great bit of propaganda! You don’t work for the newspapers do ya?
LindaL: I suggest you don’t pay any attention to MSM whatsoever…it is just propaganda.
