  1. ??? it’s not because old men are impotent, but because old women are [???]
Damn my hearing, esp. when it comes to limeys.
Thanks, Vitruvius, really liked this guy. Had never heard of him. F**k Buddies, LOL too.

  2. For some good laughs, head over to ‘overlawyered.com’ to see how looney society has become.
Here’s a bit from a comparison of different High School scenarios in 1958 compared to 2008:
Scenario: Jack goes quail hunting before school, pulls into school parking lot with shotgun in gun rack.
1958 – Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack’s shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.
2008 – School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers.
Scenario: Johnny and Mark get into a fistfight after school.
1958 – Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.
2008 – Police called, SWAT team arrives, arrests Johnny and Mark. Charge them with assault, both expelled even though Johnny started it.
Scenario: Jeffrey won’t be still in class, disrupts other students.
1958 – Jeffrey sent to office and given a good paddling by the Principal. Returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.
2008 – Jeffrey given huge doses of Ritalin. Becomes a zombie. Tested for ADD. School gets extra money from state because Jeffrey has a disability.

  3. Knol goes live:
    knol.google.com/

Brian Jordan and other readers sent in word that Google has taken the wraps off Knol, its expert-written challenger to Wikipedia. (We discussed Knol when it was announced last year.) Wired has an in-depth look. Knol’s distinctions from Wikipedia are that authors are identified by their real names (and verified), and that they can share in ad revenue if they choose to. The service initially features a lot of medical articles, which is interesting considering that Medipedia also launched today. This medical wiki is backed by Harvard’s and Stanford’s medical schools.

  4. Ok, first of all, folks, the “F**k Buddies” sketch Me No Dhimmi alludes to is not the one I linked to above, I work extremely hard to select SDA LNR shows that don’t descend into the vulgar. Indeed, I don’t recommend much modern stand-up comedy here, because of that problem, yet I felt that the particular Carr sketch I did link to tonight does meet our SDA LNR standards.
That said, the line you questioned, Me No Dhimmi, was: “It’s not because old men are impotent, but because old women are so very ugly”. At that point there’s a pan to two women in the audience, neither young, one who isn’t that ugly laughing heartily; one rather more ugly, not impressed. That’s part of what makes modern stand-up both delightfully edgy and still annoyingly difficult. Bob Hope’s shows from the ’40s are much easier: one may not like them, but they are never distasteful.
To reiterate and close, I chose Mr. Carr tonight because I think he is very clever, and I like his style. When he does approach social trip-wires, he uses clever come-backs to diffuse the situations. That’s a skill. And he very rarely swears; he sets up the joke, and then lets you fill in the politically incorrect part.
For example, this joke: “I bought my girlfriend a book called ‘Cheap and Easy Vegetarian Cooking’, which is excellent for her, because not only is she a vegetarian…”.
And he then leaves it for you to say, in your mind, the nasty bit. Finally, I like his repeating “No, I said, …” shtick. Anyway, I shouldn’t go on like this, but I did want a chance to explain why I went out on a limb with tonight’s show, so thanks for the set-up, Me No Dhimmi.

  5. Stephane Dion is mad (as in crazy):
Delusional Dion Proclaims: Canadians Want Election!
From Kelly MacParland’s commentary on Dion tonight:
Hmmm. Mr. Dion must be going on highly confidential internal polls, because if there’s a clamour across the land for a chance to spend $300 million or so on a general election, it’s not apparent to us unschooled observers. According to my own proprietary polling figures, here’s the breakdown on issues currently occupying holidaying Canadians, ranked by priority:
    1. Boy is it ever raining a lot.
    2. What the hell is up with Christian Bale?
    3. Is Mats Sundin nuts or what, sitting around Sweden wondering whether to accept $20 million from Vancouver, or $14 million from the Leafs, and claiming he can’t make up his mind.
    4. What the hell is up with gas prices?
    5. If I sneak off work early this Friday, will anyone get upset, considering I also snuck off last Friday and the Friday before?
Looking down the list, I can’t find anything that says “Boy, wouldn’t it be great to have an election as soon as possible so we can all vote for the same person we voted for last time.” But the list only extends to 500 issues, so it’s not entirely comprehensive…

  6. From LGF: http://littlegreenfootballs.com/article/30731_Video-_Al_Jazeera_Throws_Party_for_Child_Killer
A chilling video wherein the notorious child killer Samir Kuntar – just released by the Israeli’s as part of the deal that repatriated the bodies of two IDF soldiers, is celebrated on ‘national television’.
Then, check out the still photo of Kuntar, being welcomed home: http://www.daylife.com/photo/094Md6Oae9f6L/israel
A portrait of pure evil, for sure. The man has dead eyes that match his dead soul. Let the left factor him into their ‘moral equivalence’ meme.

  7. I think Stephane is no more close to paying down his leadership debt and it’s likely that the other leadership contenders in the liberal party are no closer either… which kinda brings me to question their intentions (more than usual?) regarding the bravado and the upcoming byelections.
Could he really be in it for the $2. / vote his party receives?
    wow.

  8. Vitruvius, you seem rather defensive on your selection of comedian this week. I don’t recall where you recommended “F* Buddies” from Jimmy Carr but it is always inevitable that once someone goes to your selection du jour and enjoys it, they will continue to dig around to hear more. If the daily (or nightly) selection isn’t to one’s particular taste then there is certainly nothing forcing SDA readers to listen. That old addage about pleasing all the people all the time comes to mind here.
btw, my all time favourite comedian has to be Bill Cosby. Never had to swear or use toilet humour to get a laugh. The basics of classical music I learned from Bugs Bunny.

  9. Dion has been put in a trance, flanked by Bobby Rae and Iggy whispering over and over, we want an election, we want an election.
If he’s paying attention to the silly polls of summer, well, he’s just silly.

  10. Don’t know if anyone else has commented on this, but check out Pamela Gellor’s Atlas Shrugged blog about Obama’s so-called average $25 campaign contributions. The July 19th blog is hard to read, but go through the comments to see all sorts of insights into, among other things, the huge number of foreign donations, $500 donations by the unemployed and the use of beyond the max contributions to loan money to the campaign.
Don’t see any of this in the MSM.

“Poles honour ‘Cold Warrior’ Ronald Reagan
Polish authorities have erected a monument to US president Ronald Reagan, feted for his crusade against communism and seen by some as having hastened the collapse of the Soviet bloc, reports said Tuesday.
Officials in the south-west city of Wroclaw unveiled the monument to the Hollywood actor-turned-president, apparently the first of its kind in Europe, Poland’s centrist Dziennik daily reported Tuesday.
“To Ronald Reagan for his struggle against totalitarianism — from the residents of Wroclaw,” reads the caption on the relief plaque erected at an intersection in the city bearing Reagan’s name.”

  14. Vitruvius: I saw the buddies link after watching your link, along with some others by Carr who as mentioned I didn’t know. Completely agree with you vis-a-vis humour and “salty” language, as in, the truly gifted don’t need it. Check. Someone mentioned Bill Cosby. Experienced him holding a full house in rapt, transfixed attention for two hours at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver way back in 1969-70. Amazing. And amazing how unfunny he eventually became. Prosperity kills humour it seems.
In Carr’s case, tho, the “fu** buddies” humour came from the total shock of hearing it from his plummy Cambridge lips. In other words, the humour wasn’t the words but that they came from HIM.
Was still chuckling this morning over the “no … not pay-tron-izing, patronizing …”. LOL. And the line about “talking down” while looking down at the audience.
Reminds me in a vague sort of way of the “Pretentious, moi?” clincher in the joke the “cockney git” tells Sybil in Fawlty Towers.

  15. Utterly fascinating. I look forward to the account of Canadian PRT efforts in Part II, which, unfortunately, is not yet available.

This short film will introduce you to the PRTs in the northern and western regions of the country. It is not meant to paint a definitive picture of Afghanistan, but rather, to provide viewers with a general sense of what a PRT is meant to accomplish.

“The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated,” once wrote Mark Twain. “Greatly exaggerated” also described the repeated, periodic predictions of American decline. Indeed, from the very moment of Independence, there have been those predicting America’s demise, decline or irrelevance. The only variation is whether the eclipse of the United States will be produced by its own shortcomings or the unmatchable superiority of those doing the eclipsing…

Asked about concerns that the Iranians would abuse his stated readiness for “tough diplomacy” to play for time and keep moving ahead toward the bomb, Obama said that his “willingness to negotiate” had “very clear and direct goals” and “a sense of urgency.” So “if the Iranians fail to respond, we’ve stripped away whatever excuses they may have, [and] whatever rationales may exist in the international community for not ratcheting up sanctions and taking serious action.”

  19. David Schenker, Can Lebanon’s March 14 Reverse the Tide?
This week, Lebanon’s new national unity government is slated to announce its ministerial statement (bayan waziri), the policy document that will define Beirut’s working parameters and agenda through the spring 2009 elections. For the pro-West majority March 14 coalition, the priority will be to incorporate into the statement a reference to UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1701, which prohibits weapons movement to Hizballah and expands government sovereignty throughout Lebanon. Hizballah, for its part, will look to maintain the legitimacy of “the resistance.” Although March 14 still maintains a government majority, three years of hostility and self-inflicted wounds have left the ruling party dramatically weakened, making it unclear whether the coalition will be able to prevent Hizballah from consolidating further political gains…

In its lead editorial yesterday (“Obama in Jerusalem”), The New York Sun noted that Barack Obama’s continuing explanations of his AIPAC speech, in which he said Jerusalem “must remain undivided,” raise more questions than they answer. Obama added yet another explanation yesterday in Sderot.
To decode his current position, it is useful to review in one place the various statements he has made on this issue. So here is a compilation of them, followed by a JCI revision of his AIPAC speech to correct the poor phrasing that marred it…

“Dion brings ‘Green Shift’ to Brockville
Liberal Leader Stephane Dion won a few handshakes but no votes when he waded into a group of a dozen protesters before a meeting Wednesday afternoon to discuss his Green Shift plan to reduce carbon emissions in Canada.”
“You’re not getting my vote,” said Stephen Kirkwood, who nevertheless shook the hand extended by Dion outside the walls of Brockville’s stately Fulford Place Museum where he was scheduled to attend a town hall meeting with 20 people, including municipal, business and enviromental leaders. ”
“”You don’t tax more, you tax differently,” he [Dion] said.
But his detractors were having nothing of that explanation and stayed true to their cause.
“It’s ruining our country way of life, all these different taxes and rules,” said Gill Cyr, who like Kirkwood is a vice-president of the Leeds and Grenville chapter of the association.
Cyr scoffed at Dion’s reassurance the money would be returned in the form of tax breaks with special recognition of rural needs.
“When did you ever see a tax returned?” Cyr said during an interview.

Stephane Dion defending his carbon tax plan in Cornwall
    Here’s a transcript:
Gerry Samson: They seem to not believe that the tax shift is gonna benefit them. I’m having a hard time explaining to them that they’re gonna have more credit, and they just don’t seem to believe it. And so we have to educate the people about the carbon reductions and the Green Shift, but we also have to emphasize that there is going to be more money in their pockets at the end of the year, because they’re taxed to death.
Stephane Dion: Well, use the calculator in TheGreenShift.ca program, and you will see how much the people will be impressed by the tax cut they will receive through the Green Shift.
Gerry Samson: The poor people don’t have calculators, sir.
Stephane Dion: No, but they have grandchildren that know how to use it.”
