Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

I know this is hard to believe, but it seems the MSM may have missed an important article in the American Geophysical Union’s EOS publication that would cast serious doubt on the theory of global warming. Not nearly as spectacular as the idea of the antarctic ice shelf falling apart which was featured in the MSM worldwide, the article indicates that the surface snowmelt in Antarctica in 2008 was the second smallest in the period of 1987-2008 and was just over a third of the average for the period. Details available on Roger Pielke Sr.’s excellent blog, Climate Science: http://climatesci.org/.
The MSM did do a story that featured mention of the rate of melting of the Antarctic ice shelf today. “Hansen said that he now regards as “implausible” the view of many climate scientists that the shrinking of the ice sheets would take thousands of years. “If we follow business as usual I can’t see how west Antarctica could survive a century. We are talking about a sea-level rise of at least a couple of metres this century.”
Of course the story was in the context of James Hansen, ramping up the hysteria. It was entitled “Climate Target is Not Radical Enough”! He now claims that the sky is falling – I mean the ice is melting and governments will have to cut greenhouse gases way more than first thought. Otherwise, like Ted Turner said, it’s going to get hot as hell and we’ll all end up becoming cannibals. (Alright, I made that last part up – not about what Ted said but that Hansen included it in his study)
Maybe if Hansen read the, you know, actual data, instead of extrapolating and adjusting everything to reveal the truths that only he can see, he might get a clue. Or not. Found in the Guardian in the UK : http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2008/apr/07/climatechange.carbonemissions

The reason, the only reason, that the MSM – who are all Liberal acolytes – keep endlessly harping on ‘when’s the election’ is because they realize it’s the only way to get rid of Dion.
They want an election because they consider that the Liberal Party is The Natural Governing Party and consider that Dion is hampering its ‘return to its rightful position’.
They have no interest in Canada or Canadians. No interest in what is good for the country. No interest in Harper and the Conservatives, and view them only as an impediment to Liberal Power.
I don’t think we’ve ever seen such a display of open bias in our media, as now – with the Liberals out of power – and the MSM desperate to see its return. When the Liberals were in power, was the MSM daily, hourly, speculating on ‘when’s the election’? No.

Disagree with your capitalized comments COMPLETELY kingstonlad.
I don’t disagree that the IOCC should never have given the games to China, but since they did, and we have athletes that have been training for years to excel on the world stage, they should be allowed to do just that. Boycotting the Olympics will accomplish nothing that will change China’s behaviour. It will however, just like Earth Hour, allow us to vacuously claim that “we” made a difference.
Let’s boycott the Financial Games. Ban altogether, or impose crippling duties on, the import of goods from China. Yeah, it might cost us a little more to live, but at least then it would be a REAL statement by Canada and Canadians that we are serious about wanting reforms. As well we would be truly directly involved in trying to make a difference.
Do it on your own. Refuse to purchase anything made in China. Tell your friends you are doing it and why. Tell it to the Manager at Walmart. Just say no to Chinese goods. Tell your MP that we as a nation should be saying NO to Chinese goods.
But an Olympic boycott would be a hollow act. It worked so well with the Moscow Olympics in 1980, and the retaliatory strike by the Eastern Bloc for the L.A. Games in 1984 that of course it is being considered for the Beijing Games.
If we were going to boycott, the time would have been the day these games were awarded to China. Then the protest may have had legs.
“Oh, but if we award the Games to China, they will clean up their act.”! Do you remember that? What a sad commentary on elitist thinking. The notion of boycotting these games is no less empty or futile than awarding them in the first place was when it comes to China’s actions.

It’s interesting – this call by the left (Liberals, NDP) to boycott the Olympic Games.
Remember how these same political groups screamed at Harper when he publicly chastised China for its human rights? We were told by the Liberals that such public statements would harm our economic links with China and that Harper was Evil for such behaviour.
Now these same groups want Canada to ‘boycott the Olympics’.
I’m against such a boycott. It would actually serve to isolate China in its old patterns, even more. China is an emerging industrial nation. Allow it to transform itself; it isn’t an easy change.
China moved itself with great difficulty out of a peasant agricultural economy and into industrialism. It did this in one generation by force – the Communist revolution. The next step is to make that industrialism a capitalist rather than socialist mode – it’s rapidly moving into that, promoting private ownership of land and businesses. [Canada doesn’t even have private property ownership!]
The next step is democracy, which empowers the middle class. This is absolutely inevitable. But we in the West can impede or assist this next phase. We’ll impede it if we reject China’s participation in the world. We’ll assist it if we interact with China – and at the same time, comment as Harper has done, on their human rights.
But freezing China out, with our self-proclaimed superiority, chastizing them for being ‘bad’ will move the Chinese into a state of resentment, isolation and a resultant indifference to the desires of the West.
As for Tibet – I’m extremely suspicious of the whole agenda on the part of Tibet and the Dalai Lama. It isn’t as simple as he makes it to be.

Frederick W. Kagan, Why Iraq Matters
Losing wars is always bad. One of the major reasons for America’s current global predominance economically and politically is that America doesn’t lose wars very often. It seems likely, however, that the American people are about to be told that they have to decide to lose the Iraq war, that accepting defeat is better than trying to win, and that the consequences of defeat will be less than the costs of continuing to fight. For some, the demand to “end this war” is a reprise of the great triumph of their generation: forcing the U.S. to lose the Vietnam War and feel good about it…

Maybe the question is better put this way: Why is it that “progressivism” seems so prone to nihilism? Friedrich Nietzsche, who knew something about nihilism, had an answer: “Man,” as he famously concluded in his Genealogy of Morals, “would rather will nothingness than not will.” Ultimate freedom, complete liberation, demands that man overthrow every constraint, or what Nietzsche called “a revolt against the most fundamental preconditions of life itself” – including life itself. In this scheme, nature and the natural order of things become subordinate to the mere act of willing. This is the essence of totalitarianism, a political order that recognizes no higher authority, no limits and no decencies…
(PDF warning) Prof. Dror Ze’evi, Clans and Militias in Palestinian Politics
In the Palestinian territories, clans (locally called hamulas, sing. pronounced hamoola) have become a focus of political activity and major hubs of local power. Since members of Hamas or Fatah invariably belong to their clans as well, when a member of one organization is killed by a member of another, and the killer’s identity is known, it is no longer just an issue of organizational enmity… Any attempt by the government to disarm militias is automatically perceived as an attempt to chip away at the power of the clans and encounters serious opposition.
Yet, ultimately this quasi-tribal structure is detrimental to the emergence of a viable democratic culture – harnessing the power of the clans may prove critical at this stage for establishing authority in a fledgling Palestinian state – and understanding clans is thus a crucial part of the study of local Palestinian politics…

Dear Dr Johnston,
On behalf of the Liberal Party, I would like to thank you for your hard work with regards to setting the frames of reference for an inquiry into the Mulroney-Schreiber affair.

“It is so abundantly clear, when you look at the international statistics, the tougher the laws about handguns, the fewer murders there are, the fewer suicides, the fewer accidental deaths. It is absolutely black and white.”
I guess David Miller doesn’t have google….
Simon Fraser University professor Gary Mauser finds that a year after the British obediently surrendered 160,000 legal handguns, London muggings were up 53 percent, gun murders up 90 percent and robbery up more than 100 percent. By the year following, annual gun crimes overall had risen 39 percent.
This pattern has continued. The rate of violent crime in England and Wales is more than double the United States. It is now more dangerous to walk the streets of London than New York.
On top of that, British Olympic shooting teams are now forced to practice their sport in another country! This is doubly absurd, for it discourages establishing positive role models for how firearms should be used.
In contrast, during the last decade, violent crime has dropped 40 percent in the United States as the number of firearms and states with concealed carry permits have increased.

ET, I agree with your opinion about not boycotting China’s Olympics. I also agree with your POV on the Dalai Lama.
I am quite suspicious of this religious leader’s Ghandi like posturing vis a vis the riots, etc. He is not an innocent bystander. Given that his country was annexed, there’s no reason for him to act like it either. However, the Olympics is not the venue and causing embarrassment is an unseemly tactic for a so-called holy man to to support.
Regardless, I wouldn’t support any leftist religious icon anyhow.
