Vast iceberg breaks off Wilkins Ice Shelf in Antarctic

(Question: These “icebergs” they speak of – where did they come from in the pre-warming era, when ice shelves remained intact?) titanic-sinking.jpg

current_anom_south0325.jpg

The full Wilkins 6,000 square mile ice shelf is just 0.39% of the current ice sheet (just 0.1% of the extent last September). Only a small portion of it between 1/10th-1/20th of Wilkins has separated so far, like an icicle falling off a snow and ice covered house. And this winter is coming on quickly. In fact the ice is returning so fast, it is running an amazing 60% ahead (4.0 vs 2.5 million square km extent) of last year when it set a new record. The ice extent is already approaching the second highest level for extent since the measurements began by satellite in 1979 and just a few days into the Southern Hemisphere winter and 6 months ahead of the peak. Wilkins like all the others that temporarily broke up will refreeze soon. We are very likely going to exceed last year’s record. Yet the world is left with the false impression Antarctica’s ice sheet is also starting to disappear.

  1. It must be nice for the good Professor (David Vaughan). Instead of admitting his predictions are as good as a monkey’s dart … blames something he knows nothing about … like the Earth/Sun/Solar system has nothing to with it (and claims to be an expert).
Mexican jumping bean world view … without the understanding. It’s the moth David.

  2. Good God! Pathetic, pathetic!
These endless posts intending to show Global Warming is a “fraud”! If you had adequate proof you could just present it and be done with it. But no, Kate has to stitch together this crazy quilt of ‘information’ to try and prove it (a new post virtually every day) so that her trained seals here can clap their flippers and say all those book-readin’ fancy-pants are wrong, etc., etc.
One of you Einsteins fantasizes blasting people with klieg lights on the Earth Day ‘blackout’ and he even coins a new term: ‘Greentards’. Bet you he was real proud of that one.
Come on, guys. It really sounds like a chorus here of grumpy old men shaking their fists and shouting “Git offa my lawn!!” Such anger and bitterness!

  3. rolik:
All done in the interest of scientific pursuit.
Knowledge is alway changing and all evidence must be weighed.
Science is never ‘settled,’ since it is a sum total of knowledge up to that point in the world’s history.
Prophecies are not, repeat, science. They’re just guessed.
And, guess what? The concept of human-caused global warming is plainly scientifically incorret.

  4. Rolik:
There’s plenty of proof, but you lefties won’t look at it, because you decided a long time ago that the debate was over. And any scientist who disagrees with you is berated and belittled and research grants are cut off. So get your high horse you arrogant jerk. And as far as lawns are concerned , guy like you don’t want us to have lawns. So keep fighting for China’s right to pollute and bugger off!

  5. any iceshelf berg hulk bit that breaks off has zero impact on sea level ,based on something Archimedes figured out around 2400 years ago. furthermore , if is has pushed out into the water it is only because the interior has a higher load than previously, ( actually proven by satellite measurements) that the interior is thicker than before. so because of the plastic movement of ice and youngs modulus , this movement of ice out into the water is proof that the thickness of ice on the interior is larger. the net effect of ice cycling over water — nada nada nada.

  6. For sure rolik … we are all going to burn to death because of an algore movie and david suzuki. We know!!! Send us your money so we know how bad we are!!!! Get your friends and relatives to send us money … we’ll learn … just need your money!!!!
If enough of you send money to Kate, I’m sure (can’t speak for her) she will charter jets for us so we can go to Bali to learn the evil of our ways … and convert, and believe, etc., etc. We just want the trip in the winter (to reinforce the believe thing). $3000 spending money per person would be nice. Thanks for help in turning me!!!! Save a polar bear – get me and my family to Bali!!!!
Kate – need 4 tickets … 1 king size room, 2 rooms with double beds. 3 car rentals (with air) … if they rent bikes (with a motor) I’d like 2 also. Should I use the IPCC guide for the extra activities to book?
BTW: Does anyone know if eating turtle soup can be classified as studying turtles for income tax purposes?

  7. Ed and set you free
I stand corrected. You guys have really set me straight.
Set you free, you truly put me in my place by telling me that Global Warming is “scientifically incorret”. I just have to figure out what “incorret” means. No matter – you have certainly shown yourself more intelligent than those 100 Nobel Laureates who identified Global Warming as the greatest threat to humankind.
Ed? I’m happy to take your advice to “get my high horse”. Any advice on where I should get it from? Toys R Us, perhaps? No, that would be a hobby horse. Do let me know where I should get this kind of ‘high horse’.
You, too, Ed, have shown yourself more intelligent than the 100 Nobel prize winners who identified global warming as the greatest threat to our species. Congratulations! Everybody knows that global warming is nothing more than a vast conspiracy invented by bad boogey-men! 🙂
They must only give out Nobel prizes to dumb people, huh? All the smart ones are putting up blogs and posting comment about how wrong the Nobel Laureates are. What a topsy-turvy world.

  8. You expect us to trust an organization that gives a Nobel to mass-murderer Arafat?
Jewish Nobel Laureate Getrude Stein supported Hitler, was she correct?
Nobel Laureate Pablo Neruda supported Stalin, was he correct?
Nobel Laureate Jose Saramago supported Castro, was he correct?
Nobel Laureate Jose Ramos-Horta threatened to start a cyber-war against Indonesia for daring to exercise their rights. Is he someone we should be listening to?
Pol Pot, who murdered two million people, got the Nobel. Is he worth paying attention to?
I have severe problems with your ‘100’ elite Idiots.

  9. ‘In 1998, 17,000 scientists, six of whom are Nobel Laureates, signed the Oregon Petition, which declares, in part: “There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of greenhouse gasses is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth’s atmosphere and disruption of the Earth’s climate. ”’
    http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/734749/posts
Skeptics include70 Nobel laureates) who signed the Heidelberg Appeal . . . and the 17,000 American scientists who signed the Oregon Petition denying that human activity was the cause of global warming.’

    —————-
Not sure why I am bothering. ‘100 nobel laureates’ is all you are capable of offering, in the face of all the evidence. You are clearly unable to argue the facts.

  10. Rolik – …You, too, Ed, have shown yourself more intelligent than the 100 Nobel prize winners who identified global warming as the greatest threat to our species…
Yes, I understand, us little people must roll over to the commands of those deemed superior. This is the socialist way is it not?
The committee has deemed us too stupid for our own good and thus it will make decisions for us that will benefit all.
Now, please step into this chamber…

  11. There’s training available?
    I’ve just been winging it.
Kate — please advise when your next flipper-clapping tutorial will be. When/where/cost, etc. Thx.

  13. This ice shelf broke off the Antarctic Peninsula, which is that appendix of land that juts out from Antarctica towards South America. It isn’t even in the Antarctic. But don’t tell the MSM. Why spoil a good story with facts.

  15. Rolik,
Global warming or climate change (Check mark the name to suit your event/religious doctrine) has been so bad in my neck of the woods this winter (It still feels like winter with spring a week old already BTW) that some are contemplating reenforcing their roofs so they won’t collapse by the weight of snow. You know what that means: Cutting down more trees!…Oh the humanity!
Now go “Rol” , “Lik” one and light it…BTW, does smoking dope contribute to GW?
It seems to “freeze” ones brain though?

  16. What the dumasses in the media don’t get and don’t care about is that the Ice has to FORM BEFORE it breaks off……
    More ICE = More Icebergs

  17. Im sure AL GORE GREENPEACE and the jerks from ENVIROMENTAL DEFENSE will blmae this on GLOBAL WARMING i mean their opernunists just like any liberal liars are

  18. I am so glad to have been given an individual ability to process facts and adapt those facts to scientific truth.
That particular strength allows me to be independent and avoid being part of the collective and, on this particular example, to succumb to the concept of collective guilt?
Is it just me, or does anybody else get the impression that global warming, er climate change advocates crave some kind of stability and predictability?
Throughout human history, the only constant is change.
In the last century, this abhorrence of and inability to adapt to the shifting sands of time has spawned many unnatural abberations of utopian systems.
And, the global warming political science (even though the globe seems to be going through another cooling period) fits right into this mindset.
Instead of marvelling at the wonder of the changes and taking on the challenges the future may throw at us, this inability to adapt causes great confusion.
Time can never be frozen (or is that warmed?), even though human beings have shown they continue to seek the comfort of certainty ie ‘settled science.’
Science itself will eventually disprove this hysteria.
A million Nobel Laureates will make no difference.
Galileo proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that science can never be frozen in time and that man’s natural curiosity for the ultimate truth will be an ongoing pursuit.

  19. If you compare the pictures of the Wilkins ice shelf with goolge earth you will notice that this ice shelf has shattered and refrozen before. The picture of the recent breakage is from March 8th, it is now the 27th of March. They say it is being held by a thread but that thread is 6 km wide. The suggestion that when/if this thread breaks the whole shelf will disintegrate is based on assumption. The google earth picture shows that this is not likely. The breakage will expand the sea ice expanse, unless volcanic activity increases. Antarctic sea ice is expanding at the rate of 100,000 sq. Km per day. Compare that with the 6,000 sq. Km for the entire Wilkins shelf.

  20. Poor Rolik:
–Tried to bring some balance to this one sided discussion only to run into a wall of nitwits.
–Within 5 years, they will all have to eat crow so be patient Rolik. Unfortunately you will get the last laugh.

  21. canuckguy:
And if he’s wrong, would he publish his address so he can be stoned as a false prophet?
Hang on, it sounds like he’s stoned aleady, in his rock-solid belief that science can somehow be settled.
The only science which purports to predict future occurences is science fiction.
Real science measures something which has actually occured, such as: ocean temperatures have remained steady for five years, surface temperatures this winter have been lower following a multi-year trend.
See, those are events which have actually happened, not something which may or may not happen.
    Prophecy is NOT science.

  22. Rolik that mindless comment about Nobel prize winners was rebutted weeks ago in this forum. Kindly shut your yap if you don’t have anything new to offer. You’ve already demonstrated you have no comprehension of the science behind the theory, hence your endless appeals to authority.

  23. SetYouFree;
–It is sad that those who label themselves as ‘rightwinger’ are in lockstep over this global warming issue, they blindly ignore all the arguments that something is seriously amiss, dismissing the concerns as a ‘leftwing’ plot.
–Conversely, I find too many that label themselves as ‘liberal’ and/or ‘leftwinger’ seem to be blind to the dangers about the rise of Muslim fundamentalism while the ‘rightwingers’ are alert(correctly as far as I am concerned) to the danger of coddling them.
–The same goes for other big issues of the day, (socialized medicine, the HRC’s, gun control, crime), never mind the facts, it is all about belief.
–Neither label would apply to me as I form my views from what I perceive as the facts. As a result, sometimes I am a ‘leftard’ and sometimes I am a ‘neo-con knuckledragging neo-con nitwit’

  25. canuckguy~ don’t you get enough shellacking by Canadian Sentinel?
btw, how do YOU explain that, while CO2 has risen 5.5% since 1998, the world’s temperature average has fallen since 1998?
If ‘the science is settled,’ as algore claims, and ‘hurricanes will become more frequent and more powerful,’ how is it that hurricanes dropped 66% in 2006 from 2005 numbers, and were down 50% in 2007?

  26. Yes Frenchie77
All those who have been “deemed superior” like scientists and physicists and Nobel Laureates have no business instructing you on global warming.
Why, there’s so many here who are more qualified to comment – like Kate and otter and cbg and set you free and Ed…and you, of course!
I’ll take their word – and yours – over a bunch of dumb ol’ Nobel prize winners any day!

  27. Hey grind a grit
While you’re reinforcing your roof ’cause of the heavy snow you might want to think about the fact that global warming causes more precipitation – more water to be evaporated as a result has something to do with it. Rudimentary science.
I’ll make it simple. More water=more precipitation. Snow is a form of precipitation. Ergo, the fact you referenced in order to ‘prove’ there’s no global warming actually is a result of global warming.
See how easy it is? And I’m not even a Nobel Laureate!

  28. Hey canuckguy –
Yes, it’s discouraging isn’t it? But what do we expect from the adherents of a discredited ideology?
Scroll through this site and you’ll see they fight for their right to denigrate minorities when they’re not denying global warming (’cause the oil companies told’em to!).
They gather here to bellow at a world that’s passed them by. It’s a badge of honour to be maligned by these guys.

  29. “I’ll make it simple. More water=more precipitation.Snow is a form of precipitation. Ergo, the fact you referenced in order to ‘prove’ there’s no global warming actually is a result of global warming. ”
I guess that means we can look forward to a tropical climate with no threats of of a desert climate. Sounds good to me.
Your logic is as bad as one I read yesterday where the warming cultist was whining about all the extra weeds that were growing because of the extra CO2, of course everything grows better as in vegetables, trees, grains, fruits, with extra CO2 as it is plant food and they like it.

  30. In that case, rolik, explain how droughts and wildfires are often more severe during cooler periods in the last few thousand years.
And I see you ignored the 70+ Nobel Laureates I mentioned, who disagree with your hundred. I am betting quite a few other NLs do, also.
I’ll be curious to see if your handle can even be found on the internet five years from now, when you and cancukguy are proved absolutely wrong.
And I ask you the same question as canukguy: CO2 has gone up 5.5% since 1998. The world’s average temperature has been falling since 1998.
    Your explanation?

  31. I wonder if 3,000 deep ocean buoys, the Aqua satellite and astrophysics would be as smart as 100 NLs? For good measure you could also toss in Richard Branson and Tony Blair who believe the world is “on fire’. crackle crackle

  32. If rolik, canuckguy, etal would just send me $10 each (carbon credits) I will hold my breath for 1 minute for each donation (promise!!) to reduce your carbon footprint. Sorry, but with such an uncertain future I have a “cash only” policy.

  33. Otter:
–I will not comment on your assertion “CO2 has gone up 5.5% since 1998. The world’s average temperature has been falling since 1998.” other than to say your figures are suspect. I seem to recall that the 1998 figure was a temperature spike and you nitwits are falsely using it as a base.
BTW, I thought Sentinel was one of a kind but I see that this site is infested with similiar like thinking creatures

  34. ‘a temperature spike’!!!!!?!!!?!?!?!
algoreacle doesn’t seem to think so, does he, canuckmoron? Wasn’t thw whole IDEA of agw that things were getting hotter, and 1998 was proof?
    You are a Jackass.
    Temperature ‘spike.’ *vomit*

  35. A testy bunch here. Otter, go crack open a clam.
I have read spurious claims made by you clowns before. However I don’t have the exact rebuttal I need for you on hand. I don’t spend the time you ignorant nitwits do as you dreg up dubious counterclaims on what the data means. However I will keep my eyes open to come up with a better response to your claim. I am not going to search it out but I expect to come across it some day. Just don’t have the time nor inclination to do so. You may jump on that as admitting defeat to your superior claims. BWAH WAH WAH WAH. Nah, you and your ilk are grasping at straws. And you have your common sense deflection shields up to prevent understanding. You readily believe science whores who parrot thge big Corp. lines.

    Very funny stuff:
    http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.wordpress.com/2008/01/23/18-awareness/
“An interesting fact about white people is that they firmly believe that all of the world’s problems can be solved through “awareness.” Meaning the process of making other people aware of problems, and then magically someone else like the government will fix it.”
“This belief allows them to feel that sweet self-satisfaction without actually having to solve anything or face any difficult challenges. Because, the only challenge of raising awareness is people not being aware. In a worst case scenario, if you fail someone doesn’t know about the problem. End of story.”
I recommend this site for a few laughs but you’re racist against white people if you get a chuckle out of it.

  37. You can’t answer, canuckguy, because even the head of the IPCC admits there is something wrong with the agw science. Nor will you hear any answers from goreacle on the subject.
‘It doesn’t take an advanced science degree to see there has been virtually no trend in the temperature data in the last decade or this century even as CO2 has increased 5.5%. Even the IPCC head Dr. Rajendra Pachauri has noticed the disconnect and acknowledged we have to look and see if natural forces were somehow countering greenhouse warming.’
    http://icecap.us/index.php/go/joes-blog/correlation_last_decade_and_this_century_between_co2_and_global_temperature/
    Grasp that.

  38. Otter, time will tell, as I said before, I figure within 5 years, the truth about global warming will be obvious. Even to you.

  39. The cycle known as climate change has been known to me for a very long time. It has been working this way for about a Billion years.
When this first came out that WE were supposedly responsible for it, back in the 80s, I believed it. Not that you would believe me…. fortunately I began to READ, listen and watch- rather than fall at the feet of the socialist elite who can’t even answer the questions you refuse to consider.
Enough of that. I have quite a busy weekend ahead of me.
