The Sound Of Settled Science

“Is the Earth still warming?”

She replied: “No, actually, there has been cooling, if you take 1998 as your point of reference. If you take 2002 as your point of reference, then temperatures have plateaued. This is certainly not what you’d expect if carbon dioxide is driving temperature because carbon dioxide levels have been increasing but temperatures have actually been coming down over the last 10 years.”
Duffy: “Is this a matter of any controversy?”
Marohasy: “Actually, no. The head of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) has actually acknowledged it. He talks about the apparent plateau in temperatures so far this century. So he recognises that in this century, over the past eight years, temperatures have plateaued … This is not what you’d expect, as I said, because if carbon dioxide is driving temperature then you’d expect that, given carbon dioxide levels have been continuing to increase, temperatures should be going up … So (it’s) very unexpected, not something that’s being discussed. It should be being discussed, though, because it’s very significant.”
Duffy: “It’s not only that it’s not discussed. We never hear it, do we? Whenever there’s any sort of weather event that can be linked into the global warming orthodoxy, it’s put on the front page. But a fact like that, which is that global warming stopped a decade ago, is virtually never reported, which is extraordinary.”
[…]
Marohasy: “That’s right … These findings actually aren’t being disputed by the meteorological community. They’re having trouble digesting the findings, they’re acknowledging the findings, they’re acknowledging that the data from NASA’s Aqua satellite is not how the models predict, and I think they’re about to recognise that the models really do need to be overhauled and that when they are overhauled they will probably show greatly reduced future warming projected as a consequence of carbon dioxide.”
Duffy: “From what you’re saying, it sounds like the implications of this could be considerable …”
Marohasy: “That’s right, very much so. The policy implications are enormous. The meteorological community at the moment is really just coming to terms with the output from this NASA Aqua satellite and (climate scientist) Roy Spencer’s interpretation of them. His work is published, his work is accepted, but I think people are still in shock at this point.”

  1. Kate, you should keep all of your posts about global warming, so that in ten years time, when it is generally accepted that the threat of global warming was exaggerated, overstated, and completely senseless propaganda, there will be a record of their mania.
We don’t want those psychotic goracle enviro-lefties who hounded us all with their kyoto-drama and armageddon-drivel to be able to sweep this under the rug, so that they can do it all again someday.

  2. dipshits. those people are behind a huge self- serving, money making global warming ego driven vehicle. TGLWC?

  3. sf – I would agree with you. Is there anyone that is tracking all the:
    1) scientists
    2) business managers
    3) politicians
    4) agencies and gov’t depts
which are the biggest proponents of AGW crap theory?
This isn’t because we intend to hunt them down and physically hurt them, as I am sure some-one would likely say. Rather, this is to help ensure that their actions are fully and legally examined under various justice systems to prevent this type of scientific and political fraud from occuring again (no, I am not naive enough to think that it will permanently stop this nonsense, but it may cause some sober second though from these fascists in the future).
We simply cannot let the Gorites and Suzukians walk away from this with any shred of credibility.

  4. One line says it all – the line that said that these billionaires have too much invested in the success of the global warming hoax to allow it to ‘not be’ – all smoke and fairy-tales for the dumb peons (us) to grope around in webs of deception so the likes of those ‘entitled’ self called bigshots can get more poor people’s $$$!!
Thank-you, once again Kate, for never letting this hoax become anything more that a fairy story to feed to any fool willing to support billionaires.
“They” just lay back and demand the ‘we’ must suffer for the sin of breathing. When the propaganda artists say ‘we’ must ‘do’ something about the warming crisis on the globe ‘they’ put the guilt on only YOU (the viewer); ‘they’ are invested not interested because they know the whole GW thingie is a hoax.
They laugh at us as we play right into their greedy hands.

  5. Yes, I hope that Gore in particular goes down in flames, along with the Nobel Peace Prize committe, who have selected Gore and Arafat as model human beings.
Another thing that has struck me is the number of scientists who ignore the scientific method.
They create a climate model, which is completely off-base, then they tweak it and alter it until it chugs out numbers that seem credible.
Then they use the same model to predict the future, as if there is something remotely scientific about that.
Personally, while I am a skeptic, I have never completely denied the theory either, because any honest scientist would admit that climate science is too complex and not understood well enough to say anything with certainty. All those scientist who want to make themselves look good by declaring they know the weather in 2050 do not have a clue what they are talking about. They all want to be superheroes, the saviours of the world, that we can all adore and idolize. So the more catastrophic the claim, the better. Suzuki has made a career out of catastrophe-talk.
I wish these people would devote their time to real environmental causes, like the disappearance of most large animals from the wild (such as tigers, gorillas, rhinos and sharks – but not polar bears), heavy air pollution on hot summer days, and diseases like malaria.

  6. It is a pity that the Duffy doing the interview wasn’t Canada’s Fluffy Duffy. This interview will never see the light of Canadian (and US) MSM.

  7. Ref Branson and company, I got a text message on my VirginMobile cell the other day from VM reminding me about turning off my lights for an hour on the 29th.
My very first outgoing text message ever consisted of two words in reply. It both began and ended with the letter f .

  8. SF~ when this all began in the 80s, I thought it made perfect sense. I was quite concerned that We were making things worse.
Then the Internet came along. Nice to be able to do research on one’s own, and be able to read all the work of the agw skeptics.
There IS global warming. It just ain’t US that are causing it, because it is just part of a cycle that Leftists can’t comprehend (or, if like the goreacle they are smart enough, take advantage of for power grabs).

  9. Re the Branson party:
“In James Bond movies, evil-doers meet in exotic settings to plot the destruction of the planet,” Stromback said, puffing on a cigar before dinner one night. But the people here, he said, were plotting to save the planet.
They do have such a sense of ‘self-worth’ don’t they?
How subtle is that? All the internet ‘money’ gathered in one little Island.
So it’s not about facts, it’s about money and control of the media and internet.
Next step …continue to plant the fear so the lemmings will think they need to be saved.
    Were the Bilderbergs there?

  10. Kate …I really want to know more about your ‘snow’ picture…a driveway? A country road? Those are awesome snow banks!

  11. It appears that the earth’s climate is much more resilient than scientists thought. Christians have suspected so all along. Presuppositions affect our outlooks, and the way we interpret data.

  12. Len said: “What will the next panic be, starvation by 2015 0r ice bergs in the Indian Ocean by 2020?”
    You’re onto something here Len.
For the past 100 years the dogmatic left in the free world has been trying to find a premise to sell us on communist systems.
They tried the class thing but that didn’t wash as liberal democracy is classless under law and free market capitalism allows economic class elevation to anyone.
They tried the youth revolution against establishment thing (generational warfare) that flopped.
They tried to sell Marxist class politics repackaged as diversity or multyicult politics and were successful in entrenching race politics and identity group politics into social policy making, creating the greatest civil destabilizing issues yet.
Then the green movement came along and dropped the answer to fomenting a western communist coup right in their lap…of course this was IF they could manufacture environmental scares large and widely enough to cause reactionary panic, they could slowly deconstruct open democratic systems of private property ownership and free markets and install centralized soviet styled regulatory commissions which had more impact on people’s lives than federal government…Kyoto attempted to make this a global networked coup….the coup was discovered, the faulty science to make the motivating panic exposed and the US was alert to the coup….no sale on transnational soviet collectivism this time round.
But the fomenters of transnational statist collectivism had learned…they learned that it is the well constructed panic that will install their form of administration and it will be done on the brink of a perceived or real manufactured “crisis”.
    The “crisis” I hear the most mention of in leftoid psudo-science babling are;
    A) Food shortage
    B) water shortage
    C) Pandemics and Pandemic control systems
    D) Droughts from deforestation
    E) International land use policy to preserve the “ecosphere”
All of these can be worked as a “global” panic with the help of hysteria mongering political grifters and anti-science eco-priests….and the answers are the same…loss of private property and rigid central control of life sustaining commodities and economics through appointed commissions who have autocratic regulatory powers and wide jurisdiction…de facto soviet collectivism…but we know it as “sustainability science” and “smart growth”
All despotic political systems now ride on a scientific technocratic vehicle….there’s a new one coming to a town near you real soon.

  13. Hasn’t anyone else wondered why a man who claims to have bought the global warming, glacier-melting, worldwide flooding bilk wholesale, went out and bought himself an island?
And Doesn’t Al Gore own property in “swallowed by the ocean in 10 years” Manhattan?
    Sumpin’ smells fishy…

  14. A couple of my favourite segments…….
    near the start,
“”So, do we really think the world is on fire?” Branson, the British magnate and adventurer, asked several guests, as a manservant scurried off to fetch him another glass of pinot grigio.”
    and near the end…..
“There was plenty of time for fun and games, of course. After lunch one afternoon, Branson suggested that the entire gang sail off to Mosquito, a nearby island he also owns, aboard a dozen catamarans. He said there was a party over there.”

  15. Champagne Socialists and Limousine Lefties never have to worry about the results of their own destructive policies. They’ll have enough property and money even after they’ve destroyed an economy.

  16. “In James Bond movies, evil-doers meet in exotic settings to plot the destruction of the planet,” Stromback said, puffing on a cigar before dinner one night. But the people here, he said, were plotting to save the planet.
Here’s the important point: The bad guys didn’t think they were evil, they just thought the world needed new leadership, and they were the only ones smart and ruthless enough to do it.
Huh. Sounds kinda like the Branson Buddies Crew, no?

  17. We got a little dusting of fresh Global Warming today, which is very inconvenient because I want to fix my truck. Little creeper wheels don’t handle snow very well.
When was the last time we had snow on Easter Monday in Southern Ontario, eh?

  18. That means AL GORE and the GREENS have been lying for the last ten years about this global warming and all those blabbering this global warming on TV including gore and ENVIROMENTAL DEFENSE should be sued for fruad

  19. Climate alarmists still like to rationalize the the current (and almost 10 old year pattern) as a “glitch”. This will become more and more difficult for them.
It looks like the inevitable questions about their simplistic little GIGO computer models are starting to get asked.
As Martin Luther King said, no lie lives forever. Climate alarmists attempting to shout down, impugn motives, and persecute those with dissenting views are going to be increasingly hard pressed.

  20. I guess Branson and crew didn’t realize the hypocrisy of the situation. Instead of lounging on a warm comfy Carribean isle they should have been relaxing on a cool comfy rock in the Arctic Ocean after all the world is on fire…..isn’t it?

  21. Hey what a coincidence, its Global Warming here too. Light fluffy heat flakes. Wow, Why am I a denier again?

  22. A bunch of global fat cats enjoying a fat cat good time planning the new global fat cat world for all global fat cats. (sorry felis corpulentis, no insult intended!)

  23. Fake Steve Jobs nails it:
Everyone who’s ever dealt with Richard Branson realizes that he’s a complete con man, and his involvement in anything is a sure sign that it’s a crock of s**t. Honestly, no matter where you are, if Branson gets on board you know there’s something profoundly wrong with the project. It’s the business equivalent of finding out that some movie has Donald Sutherland in it.
Truth is, Goldilocks does not really believe the world is about to burst into flames. What he does believe is that the global warming “crisis” is the next big way to make money off hype and fear. It’s the Y2K scam all over again. Truth is, the photo above and the ones on the linked page show a bunch of lucky rich bastards scheming to get even more rich…

    http://fakesteve.blogspot.com/2008/03/richard-branson-is-full-of-shit-but-you.html

  24. The picture looks like the road to burgeo NL. Probably around peter stride’s lake (a few years back they had a drift like that that was 50KM long). But it could also be on the avalon peninsula near st.john’s.

  25. The picture is from the winter of 2003-04 in Southern Labrador. I had it as my screen wallpaper for quite a while.
Icecap (.us) intimates (by its insertion in an article on this year’s snowfall) that it is current. Not altogether honest, but moderately amusing in that such events actually lend credence to the notion of climate change.
Anyway, I thought you might like the update on the pic…
    No charge.

  26. The photo proves the “thousand words” thing. Notice Branson killing himself laughing at those who donned lifejackets because the sea was rising. Laughing all the way to the bank, Mr. Branson is. But I must admit it is rather unlike him to be so late to the party. The scam is almost over. What does he know that we don’t?

  27. i have a graph in my files which reflects the temp fluctuations in greeland for a few hundred thousand years. this graph is available to anyone. it indicates a cooling trend that has already started. it is taken from ice core data.

  28. I predict that the next ‘crisis’ will be the great unregulated information machine known as the Internet. It is the Achilles heel of control freaks. It allows virtually anyone to fact check and seek out contrary opinion. It is so much easier to control people and politics if you control and monopolize the access to information. In the elitists world, such a powerful medium like the Internet should have only “proper thinking” expert opinions.
Of course it will not framed in this manner. Like the HRC, it will start off with noble goals and then incrementally increase its power. Internet control will be wrapped in the same words of maintaining peace, law, order, protection, social justice and now adding in environmental justice. Over time there will be more and more sites and opinions that are restricted, more centralized control, more regulation, more fees, more fines. Slowly they will convince the public that it just as liberating to have freedom from choice as the freedom to choose.
For example, Suzuki alluded to this concept in his latest editorial:
“I now believe we are experiencing a major problem in the early-21st century: selective information overload. And by this I mean that we can sift through mountains of information to find anything to confirm whatever misconceptions, prejudices or superstitions we already believe. In other words, we don’t have to change our minds. All we have to do is find something to confirm our opinions, no matter how misguided or wrong they may be…..Of course, if we are each going to have some say in where we are going, we need information. And we need to inform ourselves using real facts put forth by credible sources.” (cnews,March 19, 2008)

  29. lynnh:
And of course DS thinks that he is using real facts put forth by credible sources and we aren’t…
What he really resents is that because of the internet he and those like him can no longer dictate who are the credible sources to us.

  30. Google; United Nations Internet Control
From the same people who brought you the IPCC’s Kyoto.
A stretch ?? No more that the Warm-mongers accusing Climate Realists of being involved in the Tobacco Lobby.

  31. I agree with DS.
Too bad he’s upset that he no longer considered one of those “reliable source” people. Poor David. He grabbed the wrong gravy train again! My heart bleeds for him.

  32. “i have a graph in my files which reflects the temp fluctuations in greeland for a few hundred thousand years”
Yes, just one of those things that happens to be lying around the house 🙂
    lynnh:
Not a bad candidate. People will talk about internet access the same way they talk about driving cars these days: a privilege that government may take away. Because too much freedom is dangerous. For them anyway.

  33. “A bunch of global fat cats enjoying a fat cat good time planning the new global fat cat world for all global fat cats. (sorry felis corpulentis, no insult intended!)
Posted by: Free Thinker at March 24, 2008 11:00 AM”
No insult taken Free Thinker. I’m just a very localized fat cat, not a global fat cat at all! Some of my pets are becoming fatter cats than I am. In fact my name derives from only a slight corpulence plus the natural fur coat which is a well known accompaniment of any person who is owned by cats.
I’m actually more scared of the world that lynnh (1:17pm) is predicting than I am of the global fat cats’ GHG planning on their tropical island. Eventually the GHG thing will peter out, but the global glib fat cats desire to control information will not. In fact, their failure to win on the GHG front will hasten their desire to control information. Slithering activists like Lucy Warman have already tried to control access to websites through the CRTC, without success this time, but if they can get the ggfc’s on side they may well try again.

  34. Which is it ?
Hypocrite > (morphes) > Hippiecrite > Hippie, or
    Hippie > Hippiecrite > Hypocrite

  35. These people think where gods or something. Where like fleas on a cat & they , meaning these climate buffoons. Have made a Religion out of this scam, & eventually it will backfire on us all to the detriment of everyone.
It will first impoverish us , than bring science into disrepute. This is why some serious scientists are sounding the alarms about this craze, many are getting a lot of second thoughts about this UN mandated scheme. Indeed it makes the cold fusion fiasco seem a naive dream.
My fear is the idea of progress scientifically engineered improvements in living, improved health & convenience with a longer life with more options. Will be utterly rolled away by the liars now striving to make there own agendas seem plausible even while facts speak another tale. We have been subjected to a mock form of social progressiveness that in fact is luddite in nature. They have changed the nature of progress from a physical reality to a social engineering nightmare that has no bases in veracity. One is a mental construct or ideology that can never be proved , the other based on material substance that can have a empirical results. The social one can as well , but since its based on ideas not proven it degenerates civilization not compliments it.
    Just my opinion though.
I think you should delve into the religious nature worship angle of this unfolding tragedy for the West. How this & other new age forms of worship are on board this train wreck. As they where with the population bomb theorists. The great freeze of the 60’s & 70,s. Even the devil in the day care hysteria . As they are for every nut job idea that comes along. For money or an agenda. As long as they can force people to there will while profiting on misery with no hope.
Now we import workers, & have stopped breeding. Could it be because of the doom Sayers with a plan? Maybe that’s why Motherhood has started to make a come back on TV as well as becoming part of our daily converse. Reality is catching up to the poisonous ideology of these social engineers. It can’t be ignored any longer. Else even their ideology will die. If we keep to this foolishness of social faddism extinction is inevitable. Just ask the Pandas.
The last to go is the urge for sex or coupling. Just look at the marriage stats some day to see what socialism has done to marriage or having kids. I don’t think anyone would disagree that PET & all his followers including Mulroney had a one child program disguised as a low dollar coupled with over taxation. Since they knew it would not be accepted in the open by the public. This forced most Women into the work force as in China & India .We all know how PET loved the Chinese & Cuban communists. Europe also adopted this madness. Now their dying out.
This will make science a bad word when this scam is found out, & it will be. Nothing stays hidden forever as my Granny used to say, someone always comes along to kick up rocks to see what’s buried under them.

  36. “”Is the Earth still warming?””
Canadian MSM/CBC/CTV, etc., will carry this when hell freezes over.
    …-
“FoxNews Special Report w/ Brit Hume: Global Cooling
    March 24, 2008
Brit Hume on FoxNews Special Report tonight carried a report that first appeared in The Australian , saying that global temperatures have actually fallen over the past decade despite an increase in CO2 levels.”

  37. While self-serving hypocrites abound throughout the political spectrum, Breshnev preached class struggle, as he enjoyed every opulent advantage western capitalism could offer, his people stood in grocery lines for hours to purchase necessities.
Suzuki, Branson, Gore et al are of the same ilk, to a lesser degree, yes; but, hypocrites anyway.

  38. Perhaps the climate change models are wrong
Lorne Gunter, National Post Published: Monday, March 24, 2008
They drift along in the worlds’ oceans at a depth of 2,000 metres — more than a mile deep — constantly monitoring the temperature, salinity, pressure and velocity of the upper oceans.
Then, about once every 10 days, a bladder on the outside of these buoys inflates and raises them slowly to the surface gathering data about each strata of seawater they pass through. After an upward journey of nearly six hours, the Argo monitors bob on the waves while an onboard transmitter sends their information to a satellite that in turn retransmits it to several land-based research computers where it may be accessed by anyone who wishes to see it.
These 3,000 yellow sentinels –about the size and shape of a large fence post — free-float the world’s oceans, season in and season out, surfacing between 30 and 40 times a year, disgorging their findings, then submerging again for another fact-finding voyage.
It’s fascinating to watch their progress online. (The URLs are too complex to reproduce here, but Google “Argo Buoy Movement” or “Argo Float Animation,” and you will be directed to the links.)
When they were first deployed in 2003, the Argos were hailed for their ability to collect information on ocean conditions more precisely, at more places and greater depths and in more conditions than ever before. No longer would scientists have to rely on measurements mostly at the surface from older scientific buoys or inconsistent shipboard monitors.
So why are some scientists now beginning to question the buoys’ findings? Because in five years, the little blighters have failed to detect any global warming. They are not reinforcing the scientific orthodoxy of the day, namely that man is causing the planet to warm dangerously. They are not proving the predetermined conclusions of their human masters. Therefore they, and not their masters’ hypotheses, must be wrong.
In fact, “there has been a very slight cooling,” according to a U.S. National Public Radio (NPR) interview with Josh Willis at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a scientist who keeps close watch on the Argo findings.
Dr. Willis insisted the temperature drop was “not anything really significant.” And I trust he’s right. But can anyone imagine NASA or the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) or the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change — the UN’s climate experts — shrugging off even a “very slight” warming.
A slight drop in the oceans’ temperature over a period of five or six years probably is insignificant, just as a warming over such a short period would be. Yet if there had been a rise of any kind, even of the same slightness, rest assured this would be broadcast far and wide as yet another log on the global warming fire.
Just look how tenaciously some scientists are prepared to cling to the climate change dogma. “It may be that we are in a period of less rapid warming,” Dr. Willis told NPR.
Yeah, you know, like when you put your car into reverse you are causing it to enter a period of less rapid forward motion. Or when I gain a few pounds I am in a period of less rapid weight loss.
The big problem with the Argo findings is that all the major climate computer models postulate that as much as 80-90% of global warming will result from the oceans warming rapidly then releasing their heat into the atmosphere.
But if the oceans aren’t warming, then (please whisper) perhaps the models are wrong.
The supercomputer models also can’t explain the interaction of clouds and climate. They have no idea whether clouds warm the world more by trapping heat in or cool it by reflecting heat back into space.
Modellers are also perplexed by the findings of NASA’s eight weather satellites that take more than 300,000 temperature readings daily over the entire surface of the Earth, versus approximately 7,000 random readings from Earth stations.
In nearly 30 years of operation, the satellites have discovered a warming trend of just 0.14 C per decade, less than the models and well within the natural range of temperature variation.
I’m not saying for sure the models are wrong and the Argos and satellites are right, only that in a debate as critical as the one on climate, it would be nice to hear some alternatives to the alarmist theory.

  39. Aw, come on. In another few years they’ll be warning us about the dangers of the coming ice age, just like they were back in the 70’s. Remember that? And when people say, “Wait, global cooling? Just a few years ago you were talking about global warming?” they’ll just brush it off. I mentioned the 70’s ice age warnings to a friend of mine whose a firm believer in global warming, and she just said, “Well, but they didn’t have the science behind them then like we do now.” I wouldn’t be surprised if in ten years the very same people who are now talking about global warming are telling us what a big mistake that was and how totally backwards, because the real problem is global cooling.

  40. the general stability in temperatures is caused by the global dimming (the pollution prevents from sun to get in) and nothing else. so, the troubles won’t go away just like that.
