I’m a little disappointed the Canadian blogsphere didn’t tear this awful bill to pieces, it’s really bad legislation.
It has the effect of transfering money from mostly white childless households to mostly visible minority households, who are younger and have much higher birthrates.
It also disproportionately harms the gay and atheist communities, who tend to have less children than hets and religious people. It is, in effect, a subsidy for Muslims, who have the very highest birthrate among religious groups in Canada.
Coming on top of existing child care spending, it basically makes Canada an economically unviable place to live for people who don’t have school aged children, which is the majority of us.
As for this article, a lot of the atheists and gays who vote for Obama will be among the first to be harmed by his – which is to say his wife’s – policies if he seriously means to subsidize summer camp for kids.

This in a country where she, as a black, is not only making more money than most blacks will ever see, she is making more money than most Americans of any color will ever see. This in a country that continues to have the highest productivity in the world. This in a country that donates more money, and responds quickly to natural disastors around the world.
After seeing the verbage of this speech on the screen this old, retired, grumpy, MEAN, SLOUTHFUL, COMPLACENT man, who worked hard for every dollar ever earned, turned from the TV and exclaimed that “Michelle Obama can kiss my ass!”.

My kids didn’t go to summer camp. A friend gave them free piano lessons (lucky us), and they didn’t do gymnastics or soccer or hockey (thank you, God!)
They’re not deprived, either, and I had the benefit of being with them a lot more than most parents are with their kids. With an incentive to have polite children, given that they were with me so much of the time and not someone else’s responsibility, they’re both reasonably polite and civilized–with me–and VERY polite and civilized with others, so others tell me.

I have two daughters, 14 and 11.
14 year old: music (piano and guitar), soccer (rep level – means a lot of travel), dance, and Kumon.
11 year old: music, figure skating, and Kumon.
Kumon alone is $400/month, but there’s no way we would give it up. Both are doing math 2-3 years ahead of their grade level. Both are in the gifted program at school. My older one was recently accepted into the “TOPS” program at the Marc Garneau Institute, one of the most exclusive school programs in the Toronto area, and we’re convinced that Kumon was a significant factor in helping her reach that goal.
Our family income is between $100-$200k, so we’re not in the Edwards’ neighbourhood (and doesn’t Johnny boy make a lot more than $160k from the investment of the millions he earned as a lawyer/vulture?). But we haven’t ever, and will not ever, complain about spending this money on our children. We went skiing in Barrie this winter, not Aspen or Whistler. We’ll go to my brother’s cottage this summer, not rent some $2,000/wk spot in Muskoka. We’ve set our priorities, and they include $11 haircuts for me, $4,000 donations to our kids’ RESP each year, and supporting our girls’ success. Whining isn’t in the equation.
Oops.. my browser got stuck, and I thought this was comments from John Edwards’ wife. But, regardless, my sentiment still stands even if the comments were made by the poor, oppressed Mrs. Obama. Maybe she can call Michelle Jean for consolation?

In 2005, they earned 1.7 million dollars. In 2006, that dropped to $ 991,000 and I imagine their 2007 income would be in the same range.
I would have thought that for a couple earning that much money, a mere $ 10,000 on kids’ activities would be pocket change…

Well, our kids DID go to summer camp. Both of them. Our daughter took dance lessons. Lots of genres. Our son played hockey, and football. So We gave up our Bomber season tickets, and we don’t drive the latest hottest trendiest SUV, but it doesn’t matter. Our kids have talent, a sense of self worth, an understanding of team work and are polite and hard working. The polite and hardworking parts we get compliments on all the time.
All this on a 2 earner median annual income of about 36K. Oh yeah, we are homeowners, and do have cable tv, central air, and don’t eat cat food. Don’t whine about how tough it is, get your priorities straight.
As for Michelle, well, the Northern Pikes said it best; “She ain’t pretty, she just looks that way!”

Sounds like this lady has a serious problem differentiating between wants and needs. She has an outgo problem not an income problem. There is no government intervention required.
Those poor ivy league graduates have to limit their lifestyle to pay off their debt. Boohoo. Lots of students would have willingly made that sacrifice without complaining. If summer camp is too expensive then take your kids tenting and go to the beach. Take them to the library and do at home enrichment activities instead of paying for classroom enrichment programs. Use the savings to pay for sports, music and dance. If it is still too much then limit the number of activities or seek out more affordable programs.
