I Feel Like I’m At McDonalds

‘Cause I’m lovin’ it;

Disgruntled Liberals in the province’s north have organized a meeting for Saturday to protest federal Liberal Leader Stephane Dion’s decision to bypass a nomination meeting for an upcoming byelection.
Those involved say the issue has united Metis and First Nations communities in opposition to the appointment of former NDP provincial cabinet minister Joan Beatty as the Liberal candidate in the March 17 vote in the riding of Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River.
The move has pre-empted a nomination meeting that would have seen free trade critic David Orchard facing off against Prince Albert educator John Dorion.
[…]
Sources say Dion’s hand was forced by Saskatchewan Liberal Ralph Goodale, who is dead set against the idea of having Orchard as a Liberal candidate in a winnable riding, in spite of the fact Orchard played a key role in helping Dion win the party’s leadership in 2006.

It almost makes up for the “Wacky and Karwacki” moment we were deprived of during the provincial campaign.

  1. I am kind of hoping Rob Clarke, the CPC nominee for Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River (and of aborginal descent himself), shows up offer the Liberal gathering a sound alternative for the forthcoming by-election.

  2. What was the refrain from the post merger days? “Orchard was betrayed!”, seems to ring a bell…
David Orchard, destroying political parties from the inside since 2003.

  3. The Steve Dion appointment of Beatty again demonstrates that Dion is not a leader; he by-passes the nomination process and reaches for a NDP member in a deliberate effort to move the Liberal Party to the Left. This socialist university professor is an embarassment to Canada.

  4. Jack Layton is currently looking for a paraplegic, HIV positive, lesbian to run against her. The NDP will not be outdone in the race for an appropriate minority candidate to run against the Liberals.
The CPC is planning to run whom they believe is the most disadvantaged person they can possibly nominate to run. A white man!
But it sure won’t be that weirdo Orchard.

  5. If you join more than 3 political parties that you absolutely cannot stand, it’s not them, it’s you. The original actually refers to meeting absolute and total A-holes, but I think that it applies.

  6. David Orchard hasn’t a clue what his political ideology is: Conservative yesterday, Liberal today, Socialist tomorrow.

  7. I just had the most wicked thought. What if Layton appoints Orchard as his hand picked candidate? In fact, I can’t believe it has not been seriously talked about.

  8. What does Goodale have against Orchard? (or is it just that Orchard is a bit of a loose cannon?) Still if Dion “owed” him, cutting him out at this stage is a bad move. More importantly, how come Goodale got to call the shots on this one? What clout might he have over Dion?

  9. Puddin, this riding could most definitely go CPC. The margin of Liberal victory in the last election was only 60 some votes over the CPC candidate.

  10. Why would anyone take this clown show seriously?
Dion – Goodale – Orchard etal ……. file that one under Clowns In Politics baby!

  11. LindaL, before Ralph Klein, there was King Ralph, from Regina Wascana. That is the clout that he wields. In terms of the Liberal party, what Ralph says is law in this province.

  12. In fact, with the fall of Landslide Annie in Edmonton, Goodale is probably the most powerful Liberal West of the Ontario border. What he says probably goes for Manitoba, Sask, Alberta, and BC.

  13. “What he says probably goes for Manitoba, Sask, Alberta, and BC”
So, in keeping with the theme, those who cross Ralph end up with a gopher head on their bed?

  14. Have you noticed that Ralph Goodale seems to have come unglued lately? He rants and blathers and spit nearly dribbles down his chin when he talks about the Conservatives. He stabs the air aimlessly with his fingers and hunches on the edge of his chair sort of like a perching gopher.
This man is truly going through power withdrawls. He desperately misses his “entitlements”. He has never had a job before where his opinion counted and he was the perfect yes man to Chretien and Martin in his desperation to keep his titles, limo and first class priviledges.
Now he is reduced to blatant lies and innuendos and fear mongering blather and having to deceive and manipulate the weak and pliable Dion to try to get some power back – however feeble- however dihonest he knows the media will repeat his desparate lies.
Goodale has reached his best before date and should retire gracefully NOW as his melt down is really sad to watch. If the Conservatives were not so busy trying to run the country in spite of the Liberals he has said so many things on talk shows that he could be sued for but what’s the use.
Goodale epitomizes the politics of envy coupled with personal greed and questionable morals and I think he just did not want to share the Saskatchewan stage with an outspoken rebel like Orchard.

  15. Now that the winds of political change have begun to blow through the prairie provinces I would venture a bet that Ralphie will have a hard time retaining his seat in the next fed. election. Wouldn’t surprise me to see Ole Ralphie retiring before the next election is called, very much like many of his cohorts in crime.

  16. dat his not fair -Borat Dion
dis his not reported pie CEEBEE See an hi ‘ave not done dis yet.hif hi ‘ad done dis den Ceebee see would ‘ave been haul hover hit like cheese hon a poutine.

  17. Orchard is what he has always been,a socialist. He tried to hyjack the conservative party and if it were’nt for some true conservatives,he may have.He must have been supported by the same red gang that supported Clark and Campbell.

  18. Canada’s ruling Conservatives rise in new poll
The Harris-Decima survey for Canadian Press put the Conservatives at 37 percent, up seven points from a poll done by the same firm in mid-December. The Liberals were down two points to 30 percent.
The Globe & Mail featured the 30-32 poll of mid-December, with comments. Let’s see if they do the same for this poll, where we are up 7, instead of down 2.
Hard to tell, seeing as the TorStar Corporation (which owns the Toronto Star), has a 20 % ownership of CTVGlobeMedia.

  19. I met David Orchard many years ago when I was for a while involved with the PC Women’s caucus. He is very very smooth and until you really find out that he is a protectionist radical he had a way of infiltrating and monopolizing people. He is a name dropper and a shmoozer. In fact, I think you could probabloy comnpare him a bit with how we hear Karlheinz Schreiber operated. These types fo to every political event, shake hands, meet and greet and get their names known and then they pass themselves off as being influential with politicians to further get their foot in the door. Imagine how disgusted some politicians would have been to have heard David Orchard say things like “Oh, I was talking to Joe Clark the other day about Free Trade or whatever”. Never mind that the conversation would be one sided and Orchard would have just been spewing his own brand of radical thought – to the unlearned it would appear that he had the ear of power.
Orchard is a lot like Garth Turner…a little bit of knowledge is dangerous in the hands of these ego machines.

  20. Kate, I hear there were a lot of shenanigans and possibly illegal electoral activities in the ’06 election in this riding. Such as ballot boxes missing for periods of time and possible vote buying. Any more news…

  21. OTTAWA – Federal Liberal Leader Stephane Dion says his controversial decision to appoint a candidate in the upcoming Saskatchewan byelection is final, and that he hopes to find another way for the party to use the talents of snubbed contender David Orchard.”
    How about “Party Doormat” ??

  22. Orchard is the modern equivalent of Ancient Rome’s Brutus. No matter what silly deal he makes he keeps getting screwed over by those he deals with.
    It’s hilarious.

  23. It should be ILLEGAL for ANY party to undermine democracy by sidestepping nomination procedures in any riding.

  24. I doubt that we’ll see news of this poll in most MSM outlets. Back when Harper was, according to one pollster, in the 40% range, CTV/Globe studiously ignored those numbers, preferring to run their own polls which somehow showed Harper stuck in the mid-30’s. I’ve never understood why there would be such a divergence in the numbers other than that someone was massaging them to get the result they wanted.
Nonetheless, this latest poll is good news for a government that had been subjected to so much media trashing prior to the Xmas season.
This should also cause Dion to temper his recent enthusiasm for an election. An early election would have done away with the need for what could be an embarrassing performance in the by-elections. Now he’ll have to face the wrath of erstwhile Liberal supporters in northern Saskatchewan.

  25. “In fact, with the fall of Landslide Annie in Edmonton, Goodale is probably the most powerful Liberal West of the Ontario border. What he says probably goes for Manitoba, Sask, Alberta, and BC.

Shhhh. Say that quietly. We wouldn’t want to wake up dozy Manitoba liebral sheep Ray Simard, Anita Neville and Tina Keeper. Let sleeping yellow dogs lie.

  26. lorraine now you know why we call him rabid ralphie ….the spit and the drool that runs down his chin is pretty normal for an out of power lib… the arm waving is usually connected with the line of bs that he is outraged– outraged i tell you and how harper should be ashamed for what ever…it’s all good entertainment …soon rabid ralphie and bobble head borat dion will fall on their own swords…perhaps near the ides of march.

  27. But, but, but Ralphy says he had nothing to do with the choosing of the candidate for the Liberals.
Goody-two-shoes would not tell a lie now, would he?
There may be a CPC win out of this, people have the power to set thing right when they have their democratic rights diminished with that type of interference.

  28. The Libs also went through the motions of draging their asses out to a low key confab called “pre election readiness conference” in Whip Karen Redman’s riding of Kitchener…all the sound bites were of Lib MPs BSing about the conference being about prepping for some election with a nebulous date…but when pressed by an intrepid local reporter they reluctantly admitted the conference was planned a year ago when it looked like Dion had “momentum”…so this is just going through the motions of fooling the public into believing they will actually risk an election call with Dion.

  29. It’s amazing what resiliency the Liberal brand has, especially in Ontario and the Maritimes. So the Libs can probably weather a few more abstentions in the House.
The downsides are that Layton gets to keep hammering them as not being an effective oppostion. And I suppose Liberal donors will be even less inclined to help out.
So on balance, I’d say Dion’s best bet is to wait things out. Hope for an economic downturn, bad news in Afghanistan, more Mulroney-Schrieber. Besides, after Flaherty’s budget, the cupboard will be bare. What kind of platform can Rae put together which finds money for Dion’s poverty plans, etc. (other than by raising the GST).

  30. What is the reaction of ndp provincial voters to all this. Will they vote for her federally, as a liberal. Bet they don’t. Could dion be forced to pay the cost of a by-election he has caused.
Poor Sask taxpayers, forced to pay for another ndp goof.

  31. This whole thing could very well end up blowing up in Ralphie’s face. Here he is dictating to Dion that he must appoint Beatty as the candidate and he didn’t even support Dion when he ran for Liberal Party leader. Where does he get that kind of pull within the Fiberal party of Canada? And just why is Citoyen Dijon acceeding to his will?
Here is what I hope takes place in this by-election – Liberals in the riding end up holding their own nomination meeting – nominate the candidate that would have won in a “regular” nomination meeting and beat the can out of Beatty and her joke-of-a-leader, Calvert ….or was that “Dion”???? Oh, its all too confusing.
In the process it sure would be nice to see Ralph get his ass whooped too.

  32. Update: Ralph Income-Trust-Me Goodale has a signed paper from Orchard. In a brown envelope?

Orchard knew Liberals wanted an aboriginal woman in Sask. byelection: Goodale
LA RONGE, Sask. – Liberal MP Ralph Goodale says David Orchard knew full well that the party wanted an aboriginal woman to run in a northern Saskatchewan byelection.
Goodale says the former Tory leadership hopeful and anyone else who expressed interest in running for the party even signed a paper warning them that Liberal Leader Stephane Dion may appoint a woman candidate if one came along.
The former federal finance minister made the comments as the Liberals parachuted some high-profile members into the province Wednesday to launch Joan Beatty’s campaign.
Beatty, a former NDP cabinet minister in Saskatchewan, was appointed by Dion to run in Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River last week, foregoing a nomination process that would have included Orchard and angering his supporters.
Goodale, MP Ken Dryden and former Ontario premier Bob Rae were all in La Ronge, Sask., to offer Beatty their support. …-

“It’s always difficult for me to decide to appoint someone,” Dion said. “I need to have good reasons. And I had very good reasons in the case of Joan Beatty.” …-

  34. This is nothing but good news for the Conservative candidate. That huge native Liberal vote will split. On the other hand, the Liberals may have to start raffling cars instead of TVs. Could get expensive.

  35. “Goodale, MP Ken Dryden and former Ontario premier Bob Rae were all in La Ronge, Sask., to offer Beatty their support.”
Rabid Ralph: “I’d like to introduce you good La Ronge folk to your superiors from Toronto. Meet Ken Dryden and Bob Rae.”
Ken Dryden: “Bwaah. I want my Canada back.”
(First Nations guy: “I know how he feels”)
Bob Rae: I know it’s January, but anybody for skinny dipping?
Bemused constituents: Who are these jerks?
Joan Beatty: With friends like these…I mean clowns like these… who needs enemies?
David Orchard: With clowns like these, I still have a shot.

How true! Ralph and De-yawn are leaders of a dictatorship labeled *Liberal Party*. Democracy be damned.

Furor continues over Joan Beatty appointment
The appointment of Joan Beatty as the federal Liberal candidate in Desnethe-Misinippi-Churchill River continues to generate controversy!
It looks like there will be an independent Liberal candidate in the by-election, and my guess is that it will probably be David Orchard. I think I’m about ready to write off this seat for the Dion Liberals. Beatty is a high quality candidate for the Liberals, but vote splitting will not help her get elected. …-
    http://sasklibertytrain.blogspot.com/2008/01/furor-continues-over-joan-beatty.html

  39. According to Boob Rae,this is a ‘so-called controversy that is way overblown’..that’s it Bobbie,if you say it it will be so!These Libs are really scratching to hide another pile of puffin-poo,and not doing too well.

  40. Could someone explain which of these statements is not racist/sexist:
-We do want an aboriginal woman (because she is a different race and gender)
-We don’t want an Aboriginal woman (because she is a different race/gender)
Dion is so far removed that he can’t see the difference either. He insults the electorate.

  41. Jack Layton must be getting a bit uneasy with so much movement FROM his ranks to the Dipper Lite Party, aka, Liberal Party of Canada.
It was appropriate that Bobby Rae,former provincial NDP leader would got out to chat up Joan Beattie. He could say ‘look how far I’ve come for doing a cross-over, hang in there, you could run for the Lib leadership too’!
As to what Drone Dryden could offer, aside form keeping a mask on at all times to avoid pucks, who knows?
RALPHY GOODALE IS BECOMING THE BIGGEST JOKE OF ALL

  44. I blame it on the CBC, after a few years of watching the CBC people start stealing candy from babies and voting liberal.

  45. As mentioned by a previous commenter, the CPC candidate in Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River, Rob Clarke, is of aboriginal descent.
I haven’t seen him mentioned a lot by the MSM, in all the coverage of the Liberal candidate.
