Lebanese jailed for 12 years for German trains bomb plot
BEIRUT (AFP) – A criminal court on Tuesday sentenced a Lebanese man to 12 years in prison over a botched plot to bomb commuter trains in Germany, as another Lebanese faced trial in Duesseldorf in the same case.
Jihad Hamad, 23, was convicted of attempted murder in connection with the July 2006 failed attack on two trains in Germany which he said was revenge for cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed published in European newspapers, a judicial source said.

I don’t resort to boycotts often. In seven years on the radio, I have urged exactly one: Against Target, for throwing the Salvation Army from its doorways. I still maintain my refusal to enter Target, and hope you do as well.
Looks like Boycott #2 is on the horizon. I thought the Human Rights Commission complaint against columnist-to-the-world Mark Steyn was a joke, or a nuisance filing that would be rejected by the Canadian bureaucrats in a nanosecond.
But it isn’t turning out that way.
If Canada can’t defend the free speech of its most talented native son, then it shouldn’t be getting even our devalued tourist dollars.

Interesting piece about artic sea ice. The slant is pro global warming. They say that the area of sea ice coverage in 2007 was yet another milestone in the decline of ice coverage but when you read the report you find that ice coverage went from 5.6 million sq. miles to 5.7 million for an increase in coverage of .1 million which works our to 1.78% increase. They say that the coverage has declined every year since 1979. Since when is an increase a decline? It would seem that the winter of 2006-7 was the first increase since 1979. This they don’t point out.
Here is the site. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/04/070404162259.htm

Sing the National Anthem in Hindi ?
why not sign it in all of top 20 languages spoken in Canada?
It would take only two hours and it would be so multicultural!
And why not sign it in all of the estimated 6800 languages spoken on planet earth?
yes it would take 24 days of signing non stop day and night but no one’s sensibility would be offended.
and isn’t that the most important thing here?
( sarcasm )
It was written in English, adapted into co-founding French, and should be sung word for word the way it was written.
While I agree about the word for word bit (including the implied ‘don’t change the wording even in the original language’ as it is now written), but the it was actually written in English and then later translated into French.
It was written by Adolphe-Basile Routhier and composed by Calixa Lavallée at the request of the Lieutenant Governor of Quebec. The song made its debut on June 24, 1880, nearly 13 years after Confederation, at a banquet as part of the ‘Mosaïque Sur des Airs Polulaires Canadiens’ in Quebec City.
It then fell into obscurity and was not even mentioned in Lavallée’s obituary in 1891. It was translated in 1906 as follows: O Canada! Our fathers’ land of old Thy brow is crown’d with leaves of red and gold. Beneath the shade of the Holy Cross Thy children own their birth No stains thy glorious annals gloss Since valour shield thy hearth. Almighty God! On thee we call Defend our rights, forfend this nation’s thrall, Defend our rights, forfend this nation’s thrall.
There were in fact many English versions and they were sung with fervent patriotism in WWI, replacing ‘The Maple Leaf Forever’ in the hearts of our men overseas. The current version, written (it was not a translation) by Montrealer Robert Stanley Weir was the most popular and became the standard by the 1920s.
During WWII, Prime Minister King verbally recognized ‘God Save the King’ and ‘O Canada’ as our national anthems: “we might well continue to follow what has become the custom in Canada in recent years of regarding ‘God Save The King’ and ‘O Canada’ each as national anthems and entitled to similar recognition”. Thus straddling the line between the independent Canadian nationalism and British monarchism, like a good Liberal. It was controversial enough at the time that he did not have Parliament make any formal recognition of this fact. Formal recognition only came after our centennial. Pearson passed a House motion striking an all too Canadian Royal Commission to look at how to adopt ‘O Canada’ as the National Anthem of Canada and ‘God Save the Queen’ as our Royal Anthem of Canada, and which versions. (The original French was in the public domain but there was a fight among Weir’s successors over who owned the copyright.)
The bill to recognize our National and Royal Anthems was introduced several times after that but did not pass and become formalized until June 18, 1980 on the centenary of Lavallee’s first draft in 1880. It was passed unanimously by the House and the Senate. It became official on Canada Day, July 1, 1980.
In the process, the original French version of the anthem was kept and Weir’s version, with some additional tinkering of the words, was adopted.
Sorry – missed a “not”: but the it was not actually written in English and then later translated into French. It was the other way around.
As others have also pointed out.

CAIRO, Dec. 14 (UPI) — An Egyptian man has been charged with fatally stabbing his wife on their wedding night when he decided she was not a virgin.
Ibrahim Ali and Hoda Salem were married in the village of Al-Quba in the Nile Delta. On their wedding night, residents heard Salem screaming and found her on the floor, al-Arabiya reported.
Salem said that her husband had stabbed her. She died at the hospital.
Ali, after his arrest, said that he was unable to break his wife’s hymen on the wedding night, leading him to conclude that she was sexually experienced, the report said.
In a similar recent case, an autopsy found that the bride was a virgin. Gynecologist Naglaa Ahmed said that in many cases new husbands are unable to break the hymen on the wedding night because of nervousness. In other cases, women have unusually tough hymens, requiring surgical intervention.

Climate alarmism hits a brick wall
Benny Peiser, Financial Post
The success of the major Anglosphere nations at last week’s United Nations climate conference in Bali marks the beginning of the end of the age of climate hysteria. It also symbolizes a significant shift of political leadership in international climate diplomacy from the once-dominating European continent to North America and its Western allies.
This power shift has perhaps never been more transparent and dramatic than in Bali, when Australia’s Labour government, under the newly elected Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, announced a complete U-turn on the thorny issue of mandatory carbon dioxide emissions targets. Only days after Australia’s delegation had backed Europe’s demand for a 25% to 40% cut in emission by 2020, Mr. Rudd declared (his signature under the Kyoto Protocol wasn’t even dry) that his government would not support such targets after all.
Indeed, Australia’s position hardened further when Trade Minister Simon Crean announced that developing countries like China and India would have to accept tough binding emissions targets before Australia would ever agree to any post-Kyoto agreement beyond 2012.
Similar stipulations were made by Canada and Japan. Surprisingly, even the British government appeared to deviate from the European Union position when Britain’s Trade and Development Minister, Gareth Thomas, told the BBC that developing countries would also be required to accept targets for CO2 emissions.
Rather than being isolated, the decision by the United States and Canada to take the lead in international energy and climate diplomacy appears to have galvanized key allies, who are gradually rallying around a much tougher stance vis-a-vis China and India.
In Bali, the Anglosphere nations have in effect drawn a red line in the sand: Unless developing countries agree to mandatory emissions cuts themselves, much of the Western world will henceforth reject any unilateral burden imposed by future climate deals. …- http://tinyurl.com/2l7prr (Financial Post)

Montreal-based RailPower Technologies Corp sells 98 eco-friendly locomotives to Texas. . . Who?
Union Pacific places a value of $118 million on the emissions the new locomotives will eliminate over the 10-year agreement with the state. That’s 57 percent more than the amount of the state’s grant.
Compared with the older engines being replaced, Union Pacific’s new ones cut emissions of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter 54 percent to 63 percent, while using about 30 percent less fuel, the railroad company said. Diesel locomotives emit about 26 tons per day of smog-causing nitrogen oxides in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, just under 7 percent of the region’s total * Nox * emissions, according to the TCEQ.
The locomotives were built by the Montreal-based RailPower Technologies Corp.
So, for $75 million, Texans get $118 million worth of emissions not pumped into the air? Don’t quite know how they calculated the figures, but am I reading that right? If so, that’s one heck of an investment return.

From the Daily Mail (UK):
When Aisha Salim marries her fiance in Pakistan next March, it will be the wedding of her dreams.
Wearing a veil and gown, she will be every inch the fairytale virgin bride and as befits her strict Muslim religion, after the ceremony, she will hand her blooded wedding-night sheets to her in-laws as proof of her virginity.
But far from being the traditional untouched bride that many Muslim families demand, she is a modern-day university graduate who has smoked, drunk, made love to – and even lived with – a previous English boyfriend. To disguise the fact that she has had sex, she has paid for painful surgery to “restore” her virginity.
It is a drastic and costly measure but as she takes her husband’s hand in marriage, she knows it is one which may – quite literally – save her life. The horror and outrage that would ensue if it was discovered she had already slept with a man would be so damning that her own strictly religious relatives might kill her rather than face public shame.
“My virginity was restored in a delicate operation just last week, and I honestly view it as life-saving surgery,” says Aisha. “If my husband cannot prove to his family that I am a virgin, I would be hounded, ostracised and sent home in disgrace. My father, who is a devout Muslim, would regard it as the ultimate shame.”
“The entire family could be cast out from the friends and society they hold dear, and I honestly believe that one of my fanatically religious cousins or uncles might kill me in revenge, to purge them of my sins. Incredible as it may seem, honour killings are still accepted within our religion.”
Yes, there it is: “honour killings are still accepted within our religion.”
But, of course, the multiculti leftoids don’t believe it. Silly girl.

Now that would make things veeeery interesting. Three candidates from NY, two NYC mayors. An independent who is really from both parties so would not necessarily draw more from one or the other. Three candidates who are clearly not socially conservative on the litmus test issues (abortion, homosexuality, dressing up as a woman… yes I know, it’s surprising but true – Clinton has been seen dressing up as a woman too) raising the very real possibility of a social conservative independent candidate.
2008 is going to be a very very interesting political year in Canada and the US.

This is the eve of yet another Islamic holy time, for lack of a better description it is the Festival of Slitting Throats. All good Muslim families purchase an animal (lamb, goat, cow etc.) and ritually dad slits the little lamies throat in front of the kiddies and lets it bleed out at the children’s feet. This is helpful desensitizing material so you won’t be so shocked if dad has to kill your sister at a later point down the road I guess.
There will be thousands of hospital visits around the world to sew up amateur butchers and there will be many animal carcases to dispose of. Remember in Toronto a year or so ago when hundreds of carcases were found stinking up the city?

If Canada can’t defend the free speech of its most talented native son, then it shouldn’t be getting even our devalued tourist dollars.

GreenNeck,
Very interesting. However, I didn’t write the post. It was sent to me by email. I haven’t verified it either.

This site gives ice coverage in the Arctic comparing different dates. While freeze up is behind between Alaska and Russia it is ahead in Hudson Bay and some parts of the western artic. Check it out at… http://igloo.atmos.uiuc.edu/cgi-bin/test/print.sh?fm=12&fd=14&fy=2006&sm=12&sd=14&sy=2007
It was translated in 1906 as follows:
O Canada! Our fathers’ land of old
Thy brow is crown’d with leaves of red and gold.
Beneath the shade of the Holy Cross
Thy children own their birth
No stains thy glorious annals gloss
Since valour shield thy hearth.
Almighty God! On thee we call
Defend our rights, forfend this nation’s thrall,
Defend our rights, forfend this nation’s thrall.

World carbon tax policy? Unenforceable policy is no policy at all. Voluntary policy is well underway.
The new flood of Zero emission has started here in BC.

This allows the sales in BC of Quebec made Zenn NEVs and made in Delta Dynasty NEVs. All battery, no tailpipe vehicles.
Hydrogen Buses and fleets are on the march here in BC as well. Liquid hydrogen will be shipped from a plant in Quebec for a fleet of buses that will run *shake down* mode in Victoria before going into service at Whistler.
greencarcongress.com/2007/12/bc-finalizes-hy.html#comments
Hydrogen seems painfully expensive at first, but the number crunchers have proven economy of scale so governments in most countries are feeding in the seed money. Seems to make sense for heavy bus and truck fleets at least. = TG

Selective fear of religion ?
Classical Values Seems to ask whether LIberalism has lost it’s courage of conviction.
After a century or so of LIb/Left relativism eating away at the founding principles of our society why are the left now afraid to confront true intolerance and totalitarian ideology?

98 locomotives burning 30% less petro-fuel in Texas alone? Just add that saving to all the other alternates away from gas and diesel like Brazil 80% on E-fuels and hybrids passing the millions mark.

The lead up to the 2010 Olympics may yet bring this Official Multiculturalism/Official Bilingualism issue out in the open – unless Libel Freeze in BC shuts down any disenting discussion.
Francophones are demanding equal airtime coverage with English – and just who is going to foot the bills for this.
The BC Human Rights Tribunal is in worse shape than the AB one – and both are due for an overhaul sooner rather than later. If it is true that they have agreed to hear the CIC complaint and actually do, then Libel Chill will indeed become Libel Freeze.
Let’s see who among the federal/provincial politicians are going to stand up and be counted on this latest one re Allan.

E. Levant has an excellent article on recapping the state of Human Rights Commissions today.
Aaron Lee Wudrick has received an email from a vice-president of the CBC saying “…the reporter’s actions…were inappropriate and against CBC/Radio Canada’s Journalistic Standards,” and that they are “continuing to investigate the particulars and will follow the disciplinary process outlined tin the CBC’s collective agreement.”
Okay, CBC has fessed up, and is taking action. The heat is on the Liberals now. Are they going to continue with their denials? Stay tuned.

Katherine Kersten: Normandale’s ‘meditation room’ is home to a single faith
http://www.startribune.com/featuredColumns/12551256.html
“For all practical purposes, this meditation room is essentially a Muslim prayer room,” said Chuck Chalberg of Normandale’s history faculty. “Something this unprecedented goes beyond religious toleration.”
Normal folks might call it a form of child abuse and animal abuse but who are we to judge a supremacist cult?
If you folks in Van/Tor/Mont have a half dozen carcases mysteriously show up in your yards by Friday you will know why they are there.
EBD – I’d say that the CBC is burying the situation; we have no names, no dates, nothing. The Liberals will also bury it.
Irwin daisy – I agree that in a traditional marriages, the bride must be and show, that she is a virgin (as it was also done in the pre-modern west). I just have a problem with the story. The fact that the young woman’s name is public in the article, doesn’t this defeat the purpose of her operation?
Re: “Okay, CBC has fessed up, and is taking action. The heat is on the Liberals now. Are they going to continue with their denials? Stay tuned.” posted by EBD
The Liberals are waiting for the CBC to tell them how to “fess up”, and somehow make it look like a Conservative problem. It’s taking so long because the CBC is busy directing Schreiber right now.
