I’ll be spending most of the day catching up on work (when I’m not watching the game against Hamilton) so until I have more to post about, the thread is open for your general tips and/or Rider-CFL commentary.

  1. YAAAAAY Go riders!!
Riders clinched a playoff spot yesterday!
And it is possible to clinch that home date this very afternoon with a win for us and a loss for the little red horsies. (no I will not be cheering for Winterpeg… is it possible for both teams to come out with a loss?? 🙂
Should be a great game today. Hamilton is finally showing some sparks and the Riders have been whacked with injuries and absences (again)
    Go riders!

  2. Hard right wing agenda evident?
    (said tongue in cheek)
    Ignatieff urges investment in military
    Oct 14, 2007 04:30 AM
MONTREAL–Canada needs to build up its military, buying new helicopters and other equipment, so the country can play a more active role on the world stage defending human rights and preventing genocide, deputy Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff says.
“We’ve got to be committed to sustained, year-on-year investment in military capacity,” Ignatieff told a conference on genocide prevention here yesterday.
“We do this, and we will be taken seriously.”
Speaking before a crowd of academics and diplomats from around the world, Ignatieff said western nations have a responsibility to come to the aid of those whose human rights are being abused.
But there is little point in sending military help if the soldiers are not properly equipped, he said.
“We can’t send people out to protect citizens and stop genocide with just blue berets and side arms,” he said.
“We must never, ever put RomĂ©o Dallaire in that situation again.”
Dallaire was the Canadian head of the United Nations peacekeeping force in Rwanda in 1994 when the ruling Hutu launched genocide against the minority Tutsi people and moderate Hutus that saw 800,000 people killed in a matter of months.
Poorly equipped and with firm restrictions on the actions he could take, Dallaire could do little more than witness the unfolding tragedy as the UN and world leaders ignored his repeated requests for a stronger force.
Ignatieff said the political will to intervene in such cases will only come when voters put pressure on their leaders to take action.
“A politician like me is not going to do anything until you raise the price of doing nothing,” he said, adding that military solutions must always be a last resort.
Canada is already well respected on the world stage, Ignatieff said, and building up the military would only enhance its influence and better enable the country to intervene when human rights are abused.
“It won’t come cheap, but we have to be prepared to pay that price,” he said, but did not provide any cost elements.
Ignatieff cautioned that he is not talking about building an army capable of invading and occupying foreign countries, but one that is better able to intervene when human rights are being abused.
“If we want to have robust interventions, we must have the capability,” he said.

  4. Interesting that Ignatieff is moving to the Harper Agenda of support for human rights and the Harper Agenda of rebuilding our military and the Harper Agenda of positioning Canada back onto the world stage as an active agent.
What was his position when Harper was openly chastizing China for its violation of human rights, and the Liberals were, on the other hand, ranting against Harper for doing so – because that would, they said, ‘harm our economic trade with China’.
Is this a movement to the right of one section of the Liberal Party, the Ignatieff Bloc, while Dion and Rae remain left?
By the way, ‘intervention’ usually involves some form of invasion and occupation. Otherwise, it’s just rhetoric – as Dallaire found out.

  5. Could this be the visible opening shot in an Ignatieff-Dion power struggle? Dropping this position so close to the throne speech is more than coincidental I bet.
Either that or Ignatieff was caught off guard by the reporter and rambled on without thinking.
    It beats me.

    “US soldiers burnt Koran: report”
THE US military said it would investigate claims that its soldiers had burnt a copy of the Koran in Afghanistan, as angry locals demanded action and threatened retaliation.
Allegations that troops tore up and burnt the Muslim holy book during a raid in the eastern province of Kunar yesterday led several hundred villagers to demonstrate the same day, blocking a main road for hours.
Locals repeated the charges at a heated meeting today in the provincial capital Asadabad of representatives of the US military, Afghan officials and more than a dozen men from the area near the raid site in Narang district.
“You have desecrated our religion,” resident Azim Khan told the US delegation.
“If the perpetrators do not apologise to Afghans and to all the Muslims of the world, and if they are not brought to justice and punished for what they have done, we will stand against you, you will see an uprising,” he said.
US Captain Jason Coughenour said the allegations would be treated seriously.
“We respect your religion,” he said.
“We will launch an investigation and find out who has burnt the Koran. If it has been done by an American, we will punish him.”
The US-led coalition yesterday confirmed the raid in which four men were arrested but denied that any religious articles were desecrated.
Afghanistan is a deeply devout country and allegations of abuse of Islam have in the past touched off protests that have turned deadly.
There are about 55,000 foreign soldiers in Afghanistan, about half of them from the United States, helping Afghani security forces fight back an insurgency by the extremist Taliban movement that was in government between 1996 and 2001.

  12. Linda Leatherdale, the financial analyst for the Toronto Sun has heard a rumour from the Ontario Liberal finance department that McSquinty is set to raise the PST from 8 to 10%. Harper is expected to drop another percentage point from the GST in the throne speech and of course the Liberals will take that tax benefit from you before you can even receive it!
Happened before when the federal Lieberals stole Harris’s tax cuts by the largest increase in CPP ever.
Mayor Miller noted that since Ontarians obviously support tax increases in that the Liberals were overwhelmingly returned to office he will proceed with his own tax increases.
That scurring sound you hear is Ontarians packing their stuff and moving out west.

  13. but…but…wait…didn’t McSquinty say he wouldn’t raise taxes?He wouldn’t lie would he?

  14. “Tories looking for mandate from Throne Speech
The Conservative minority government wants a mandate to govern, and it’s up to the opposition whether an election is triggered, says a senior Tory cabinet minister.
“We want to be clear that the alternative that is not available is obstruction in the House of Commons,” Industry Minister Jim Prentice told CTV’s Question Period on Sunday.
The broad areas that Tuesday’s Throne Speech will address are economic management, criminal justice, the environment and Afghanistan, Prentice said.
If the opposition approves the Throne Speech, the government will recognize that as a mandate to govern, he said.” […]

  15. Before anyone should be allowed to post re tax increases in Ont, they should have to answer a question, DID YOU VOTE LIBERAL, if yes, live with it and no bitching. If answer is NO, head west.

  16. Mary T, I’ll answer your question. I worked as a volunteer for John Tory and questions on McSquinty’s tax increases and lies were hardly mentioned. When I asked people don’t you care about your money, blank stares. I will be moving out of Toronto early next year.

  17. OK you guys. My wife is a life-long Ti-Crap fan. I am not. I’ve spent the last hour preparing dinner while she watches the game. I don’t know the score but based on the number of “Yeahs” or “F@#Ks” emanating from the TV room, my guess is that the Riders are ahead.

  18. You know how Liberals, especially “It’s not fair’ Dion blame everybody but THEMSELVES for any of their pitiful failings.
This quote by Jim Prentiss today on CTV QP hits the nail on the proverbial head:
“There’s been no attempt to put the Liberals into an impossible position. The Liberals, led by Mr. Dion, find impossible positions all by themselves,” he said.
Touche and, Mr. Harper, don’t ever take your foot of the neck of a Liberal snake.

Georgia becomes an unlikely U.S. ally in Iraq
The United States has found an unlikely ally in the struggle to block what U.S. commanders contend is Iranian weapons smuggling in this rural agricultural region south and east of Baghdad: soldiers from the former Soviet republic of Georgia.
At a time when other countries are pulling troops out, Georgia has more than doubled the level of its forces here, from 850 to 2,000 soldiers, and redeployed them from the Green Zone in the capital to a region along the Iranian border.
After a ceremony to mark the formal start of their mission Monday, during which Georgian soldiers knelt and were sprinkled with holy water by their Eastern Orthodox priest, the tiny Caucasus Mountain nation has become the United States’s second-largest ally in Iraq…
…Georgian soldiers said in interviews that they understood their service …was directly linked to their own security – as a means of helping Georgia join NATO to protect against a resurgent Russia.
Sergeant Koba Oshkhereli, interviewed as he peered out the dusty gate of Forward Operating Base Delta at the trash-strewn streets of Kut, said he understood the rationale for his deployment here in these terms: “The bear was sleeping. Now the bear is awake and stomping his feet.” …-

  23. ‘Phantom’ residents to lose status
Cut-off looms for workers in Gulf states who have Canadian landed status but don’t actually live here
As the first of Canada’s new Permanent Resident cards hit their expiry date, immigrants who haven’t spent the required length of time in Canada – 730 days out of five years – face losing their landed status in the next few months.
The looming cut-off means hundreds, perhaps thousands, of “phantom” residents – some of whom settled their families here and then went back to well-paying jobs in China, India or the Middle East’s Gulf states – will be out of luck.
A large number of them came through a single Canadian visa office: Abu Dhabi.
A government internal report estimates that a whopping 98 per cent of “permanent residents” processed in Abu Dhabi, which serves the Gulf region, had no intention of remaining in Canada after their initial landing.
Currently, 80 per cent of the permanent resident travel applications in the United Arab Emirates capital are for people who have failed the residency requirement.
As a result, they must return to Canada to appeal the revocation of their status…

Shiite leader visits Iraq Sunni province in a major reconciliatory gesture
BAGHDAD – In a major reconciliatory gesture, a leader from Iraq’s largest Shiite party paid a rare visit Sunday to the Sunni Anbar province, delivering a message of unity to tribal sheiks who have staged a U.S.-backed revolt against al-Qaida militants.
Ammar al-Hakim’s visit was the latest sign that key Iraqi politicians may be working toward reconciliation independently of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s government, which has faced criticism for doing little to iron out differences between the country’s Shiites, Kurds and Sunnis.
Sunni Arab Vice-President Tariq al-Hashemi visited Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, Iraq’s top Shiite cleric, last month at the holy city of Najaf south of Baghdad. The visit amounted to an unprecedented Sunni Arab endorsement of al-Sistani’s role as the country’s guardian. …-
