The Liberals have no obligation to run a candidate in every riding. And maybe the folks in Central Nova who have seen their vote split in the past will come to like this idea. Some obviously won’t; others will take some time to decide how it sits with them. In any event, to call it “disenfranchising a population” is a little bit grand, unless you feel that every Canadian has the right to vote Liberal. It would stun me to learn that you believe that. I wouldn’t even expect you to term it a privilege.
And please don’t tell us that you despair for those who have worked hard for Liberals in that riding. Other Liberals can take care of that. You know they’re all bleeding hearts.

The way parties, who have somewhat similar agendas, eg, proponents of Big Authoritarian Centralist Governance (Liberals, NDP, Bloc, Green)deal with each other, is to either differentiate themselves such that they are not ‘all the same’. Or, do as the Reform/Alliance/PC did – and work to build a new party that may not merge all issues but builds a shared party – ie, the CPC.
But, the leaders of two of those parties don’t get together, and sift and sort through the 300 plus electoral ridings, pick which ones the Liberals will run in, and which ones the Greens will run in. Such an act means they’ve already merged. The Red-Green Party.
Yes, the Red-Green Party’s act does disenfranchise the voters in Central Nova; the Liberal Party is, or claims to be, a national party. Therefore, it does have an obligation to run a candidate in every riding.
As for Dion liking what May stands for – nonsense. Dion is aligning himself with May, because he’s trying to get votes away from the NDP. This is basically a Liberal-NDP fight.
The NDP have always focused on the environment. Dion has moved into this theme because he’s trying, trying, to increase Liberal votes – by taking them from the NDP.
