Penn said their action was the result of desperation.
Ian Smith, Vancouver Sun / Media-savvy
Briony Penn, 40, emulated Lady Godiva as she and supporters, some topless themselves, rallied in Vancouver.
“We’ve tried everything to raise awareness about endangered ecosystems, but they won’t listen to the scientists and they won’t listen to the people,” said Penn, 40, who has a doctorate in geography.
“So we’re exploiting the media, taking our clothes off. And look at all of you.”
More than a dozen television camera operators, newspaper photographers and reporters encircled the 40-year-old woman on the horse.
“I’ve got a PhD and no one listens,” she declared. “I take my clothes off, and here you all are. So thank you.”

Read spiked editor Mick Hume in The Times (London), on the tyranny of anthropomorphism.
by Mick Hume
I have never really felt part of our alleged nation of animal-lovers. And if I hear many more sermons about the abuse and welfare of our furry, feathered and finned friends, they are in danger of turning me into a committed animal-loather.
It wasn’t just the hunting debacle that raised my humanist hackles this week. There was also the goldfish affair. Having refused all requests to have a cat or dog, we finally relented enough to buy our young daughters some goldfish. We were met with signs declaring that the shop ‘does NOT sell fish to under-16s’. But it soon became clear that it doesn’t sell them willy-nilly to any old adults, either….-

Natives take another day off work, will anyone notice or care?
Tory budget could provoke blockades: natives
Updated Tue. Mar. 20 2007 8:56 PM ET
Canadian Press
Chiefs from across Canada are warning of a potential surge in native blockades led by an increasingly frustrated and militant youth movement.
The virtual exclusion of First Nations from Monday’s federal Conservative budget was a slap that may hit back, they warned Tuesday.
Indian Affairs Minister Jim Prentice said plenty of money is being spent on native causes, but the chiefs say First Nations are falling ever farther behind.
“It’s scary,” said Angus Toulouse, Ontario vice-chief of the Assembly of First Nations.
“If people aren’t being heard, if (land) claims aren’t being addressed … you can bet there’s going to be much more confrontation and barricades.”
“Do I advocate it? No. But the young people are going to be taking matters into their own hands.”
Don Maracle, chief of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte in Eastern Ontario, said it’s tough to convince a burgeoning native youth population that real change can come through official channels. The status Indian population is young, with a median age of 25 compared to 35 for all Canadians, according to Indian Affairs.
“The younger First Nations people have run out of patience,” Maracle said. “They don’t have the patience the older generation does to tolerate inequity.”
Toulouse and Maracle joined chiefs from other parts of Canada to slam a federal budget they said is beyond disappointing. The second Conservative budget contained $6 billion in direct program spending for everything from meals for long-haul truck drivers to museum internships that promote culture.
It includes $70 million over two years for aboriginal training, justice and a commercial fisheries program. Another $300 million set aside to encourage private home ownership on reserves is complicated by the fact that First Nations typically view land and property as collective assets.
Absent was any new spending to build desperately needed new housing or to boost funding levels that have long lagged behind population growth, chiefs say.
Prentice said his government will spend just over $10 billion this year for aboriginal programs.
“There are many areas where we have to make more progress – no one disagrees with that,” he said.
“But the money we’re speaking of is over $16,500 per citizen on reserve. It’s a large sum of money and we have to make sure it’s being properly spent and that we’re seeing progress on the areas that are important: women and children, housing and education.”
Much of the cash is to honour Ottawa’s historic treaties with First Nations. Native leaders say it does not keep pace with inflation let alone population growth.
Prentice, while in opposition, said aboriginal poverty was one of the most pressing crises facing Canada.
He noted that the new budget, though it stops short of a funding commitment, pledges to help settle land claims. And he vowed to keep working with the chiefs on problem areas.
“No one wishes to see blockades,” he said. “And that’s not how we do business.”

“Iraq insurgents used children in car bombing
Insurgents in Iraq detonated an explosives-rigged vehicle with two children in the back seat after US soldiers let it through a Baghdad checkpoint over the weekend, a senior US military official said Tuesday. The vehicle was stopped at the checkpoint but was allowed through when soldiers saw the children in the back, said Major General Michael Barbero of the Pentagon’s Joint Staff. “Children in the back seat lowered suspicion. We let it move through. They parked the vehicle, and the adults ran out and detonated it with the children in the back,” Barbero said.”

The Gozi trojan
The server to which the information was being sent had a very professional-looking front end that allowed users to log into individual accounts, view indexed data and get results from queries based on certain fields such as URL and form parameters.
When Jackson first discovered the Trojan in January, not one of the 30 antivirus products he tested detected the malware specifically.
Several flagged it as a suspicious file or a generic threat based on the fact that it was using a commonly known packing tool to compress the code. Updated versions of the same 30 products in early February did a better job of picking up Gozi, though even at that point five of the products completely missed it, according to Jackson.
Details of the Trojan and the information on the Russian server have been passed on to law enforcement authorities, and to several of the affected companies, Jackson said. The subscription service offering this stolen information was disabled March 12, he said. However, the server housing the data is still online and is continuing to receive stolen information, he said.

Harper accuses Liberals of being sympathetic to the Taliban
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Stephen Harper accused on Wednesday the Liberals of showing “passion” for the Taliban and not supporting its troops during a bitter exchange in the House of Commons after Liberal Leader Stephane Dion called for the resignation of Defence Minister Gordon O’Connor.
“I can understand that the leader of the Opposition and members of his party feel for Taliban prisoners. I just wish occasionally they’d show the same passion for Canadian soldiers,” Harper said in the House of Commons.
Dion immediately called on the prime minister to apologize for the remarks. …-

Absolutely, there needs to be some change in our government–every time I visit another province, I am amazed at how far behind we are. It is frustrating to watch everything fall apart around you, frustrating knowing it doesn’t have to be this way.
But do I think that Wall and the SaskParty are going to change things around? I don’t know.
The only thing I do know for sure is that we have two choices for our next premier: Calvert or Wall.
I will choose Wall because, as I have said before, it can’t get any worse and Calvert’s stay is long overdo. Let’s go from there.

Tories Vow To Limit Federal Spending Power If Federalists Win Quebec Election
The Conservative government is promising to take historic steps to limit federal spending power — but only if federalists win next week’s Quebec election.
Lost in all the budget headlines this week was a little-noticed promise to negotiate with the provinces about how to formally prevent Ottawa from spending money in provincial jurisdictions.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper repeated the promise in the House of Commons on Wednesday and said he wants to hold those discussions with a federalist government in Quebec.
Tory Quebec lieutenant Lawrence Cannon was asked whether that means the entire initiative hinges on the defeat of the separatist Parti Québécois in Monday’s election.
“That’s what I understood,” Cannon said of the prime minister’s remarks. …-

Hydro Dollar savings in four steps
Base board heating is the biggest hydro hog. Be sure to turn down your thermostat from 70* to 66* at night.
If you live alone, leave it at 66* all day and turn it back up to 70* when you arrive home from the office. Wear a sweater and let your heat – loving neighbors help heat your apartment.
Ok, that*s a bit much. Forget I said that.
The stove and oven are the second heaviest drain on electricity. Assuming you are wise enough not to own a dish-washer or clothes-dryer.
Tea, instant coffee, soups, and instant oatmeal are all [2] two minute cook ups in the microwave oven. Instant noodles are [3] minutes. Not only does microwave cooking save you money but it saves your personal time as well. Personally I find [2] two microwave ovens to be ideal in the kitchen. No waiting!
The third heaviest energy hog is the hot water tank. Mine is on a manual switch, [circuit breaker]. I turn it on a half hour before the morning shower and off 15 or 20 minutes after the shower.
Once more it is turned on around 5pm or just before supper for about one half hour. If you allow your hot water tank to cycle on and off each 24 hour day long, it dumps current every cycle, until the elements come to full heat resistance. Wasteful.
If all hot water tanks were sold with a 30 minute auto-off switch. [A switch that you flip for hot water and forget], the power savings could close down a major hydro power dam.
Compact flourescent lamps are now very affordable, and have a warmer colour these days. Cheap tungsten lamps cost you the gas to get 7 lamps during the life of one flourscent. Two or three of $8 household led lights in your always on fixtures will really save you money.
I have one of the lowest hydro bills going, yet some people may think I really waste electricity due to a string of *Always On* red led lights around my front window. The red aura makes for an ideal night light and they make everyone look really healthy.
Mark my words, these Scrouge like habits with hydro power do pay for lots of Tim Hortons TimBits and coffee. Microwave use saves a lot of personal time as well. = TG
PS: No Global Warming hot air from me. I just prefer not to throw money away.

The pledge was presented to Gore by Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), Ranking Member of the Environment and Public Works Committee, during today’s global warming hearing. […]
Senator Inhofe then presented Vice President Gore with the following “Personal Energy Ethics Pledge:
Cl As a believer: · that human-caused global warming is a moral, ethical, and spiritual issue affecting our survival;
· that home energy use is a key component of overall energy use;
· that reducing my fossil fuel-based home energy usage will lead to lower greenhouse gas emissions; and
· that leaders on moral issues should lead by example;
I pledge to consume no more energy for use in my residence than the average American household by March 21, 2008.”

Liberals move to take potential election trigger off the table
By JENNIFER DITCHBURN
OTTAWA (CP) – The Conservatives thwarted a move to fast-track four of their law-and-order bills, arguing Wednesday a Liberal motion to speed up their passage didn’t jibe with parliamentary procedure.

I hope the Prime Minister doesn’t apologize for what he said, it’s the truth. Most of us feel the same way.
If the Lefties can attend demonstrations put on by Hezzbolah then they are guilty as hell with their sympathies toward these sorts. Czech leader Klaus fights global warming ‘religion’
By Jan Lopatka
REUTERS
5:38 a.m. March 21, 2007
PRAGUE – Czech President Vaclav Klaus said on Wednesday that fighting global warming has turned into a ‘religion’ that replaced the ideology of communism and threatens to clip basic freedoms.
The right-wing president, a free-market champion, wrote to the U.S. Congress that adopting tough environmental policies to fight climate change would have destructive impact on national economies.
‘Communism has been replaced by the threat of an ambitious environmentalism,’ Klaus wrote in response to questions from the U.S. House of Representatives’ Committee on Energy and Commerce.
The U.S. House Subcommittee for Energy and Air Quality was due to hold a hearing on climate on Wednesday with former U.S. Vice-President Al Gore, who sees global warming as a key challenge, and Danish sceptic Bjorn Lomborg, who says governments should focus on fight disease and hunger instead.
Gore, who won an Oscar for ‘best documentary’ for his ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ movie on climate change, has led a global warming awareness drive in the United States, the world’s largest source of gases believed to cause it.
Klaus, who does not hold many executive powers but is by far the most popular politician in the ex-communist Czech Republic, has taken a decisively opposite stance on the issue.
Klaus said poor nations would also be hurt by efforts to impose limits and standards on emissions of gases believed to cause global warming.
‘They will not be able to absorb new technological standards required by the anti-greenhouse religion, their products will have difficulty accessing the developed markets, and as a result the gap between them and the developed world will widen,’ he wrote.
‘This ideology preaches earth and nature and under the slogans of their protection – similarly to the old Marxists – wants to replace the free and spontaneous evolution of mankind by a sort of central, now global, planning of the whole world,’ he added.
U.S. President George W. Bush opposes mandatory caps on heat-trapping gases. He pulled the United States out in 2001 of the Kyoto Protocol on global warming, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Klaus wrote that it was futile to fight against phenomena like higher solar activity or the change of ocean currents, and called for avoiding wasting taxpayers money on what he called doubtful projects.
‘No government action can stop the world and nature from changing. Therefore, I disagree with plans such as the Kyoto Protocol or similar initiatives, which set arbitrary targets requiring enormous costs without realistic prospects for the success of these measures,’ he said.
