Good Morning

Busy day in the bodyshop (next few days, actually), so things will get off the ground slowly today. Flames. Ugh. It’s not that I don’t like how they look – they’re just so bloody much work and technically unforgiving.
In the meantime, check out the blogroll. Plus, there’s lots of good items linked at National News Watch this morning.
Check ’em out, and I’ll be back when I get back.
As of this morning, Google News pulls up nothing from the MSM on the radioactive remarks by Liberal energy critic, Mark Holland.
And if you’re one of those out there scratching your head about why this is such a “big deal” – imagine, for a moment, that Stockwell Day had blown into Montreal in 2005 and mused on live radio that a Conservative government might make transfer payments to the province contingent on Quebec going English only.
That help?

  1. Haven’t read the comments above (too many; no time), but I’ll say this: this refusal of the MSM/Google/you name ’em to say anything about the incendiary, dangerously divisive and indicative-of-the-Liberals’-hidden-agenda-to-abuse-the-West-more-than-ever-before utterance of the Lib MP is absolute, irrefutable proof that the MSM is biased against the Conservatives and in favor of the Liberals. No debate, no question. This is the smoking gun. They’ll mine the bottom of the ocean for any nuggets to use as a false claim of something against the Conservatives, but when a Liberal says such a thing on record, they suddenly pretend they’re deaf, blind and anencephalic, therefore, as far as they’re concerned, it never happened.
I swear, the MSM is deliberately trying to put these divisive crooks, the so-called “Liberals”, back into power and uncaringly risk throwing confetti, wood and gasoline onto the still-smoldering embers of Western separatism.
They could care less if the West was part of the Canadian federation. I suspect that the left and the MSM have a hidden agenda to force the West to separate by deliberately abusing them with extreme prejudice. How could I think otherwise? Just listen to them demonize the West, particularly Alberta.
If the Liberals ever come back to power… that will be very, very bad for Canada’s future, for its unity…
Therefore, we cannot trust the left/MSM/Liberals. Nothing they say means anything. Nothing they don’t say means anything… they just haven’t any credibility whatsoever.
I wonder if the MSM is tuning out this thread? Do they not want to face reality? The reality, that is, that they’re biased to the max and that we know it. They don’t realize that their extreme bias is the reason why they’re having worsening problems with their circulation, viewership and bottom line. Why pay for their crap when we know it’s untrustworthy and unreliable?

  2. “They could care less if the West was part of the Canadian federation. I suspect that the left and the MSM have a hidden agenda to force the West to separate by deliberately abusing them with extreme prejudice. How could I think otherwise? Just listen to them demonize the West, particularly Alberta.”
    I really wouldn’t say that …
In general, the reason why the Liberals (and NDP) hate Alberta is because Alberta is a slap in the face of everything Liberals (and NDP)believe.
Consider the difference between Alberta and Saskatchewan. Alberta and Saskatchewan are very similar in most measureable ways and the main difference is policital (Alberta being conservative and Saskatchewan being very Liberal/Socialist). Now, the Liberal/NDP view of the world would have Alberta needing help for being ‘backwards’ and Saskatchewan being successful; Alberta being successful (and so successful) is an insult to every socialist in Canada.

  3. The silence of the MSM betrays a belief that if ignored, the issue will go away, and that Canadians in Central Canada will scurry along, unawares of the gaffe and the riling it has caused in a critically important and vibrant region of the country.
Think about that. It’s incredibly arrogant. And incorrect. This story will percolate through the country (it has already in my Ontario office, my home, my extended family), and the MSM avoidance of it is glaring.
Not only have the Libranos shown their hand, but so has the MSM, on a very wide stage. Good, I say. More of this please.
Consequently, senate reform is now my highest priority as a voter (nice try with the Kyoto snake oil), to loosen the grip of Quebec and its endless stream of kleptocratic socialist weenies that have trashed this once outstanding country.
This is more Librano pandering of the “you can get something for nothing” pablum to Quebec and GTA. PQ and GTA don’t have to change their lifestyle to accomodate Kyoto – we’ll lay it on the backs of the izzy money Albertans – and stick it to the Yanks at the same time (double bonus). The only izzy money in this country is the izzy money that is stolen from its populace to be squandered in one hairbrain feel good scheme after another.
I don’t know what’s worse: the Libranos for pandering this “get something for nothing” crap, or the gullible nanny-state-addicted trammeled somnambulist masses in PQ and GTA that have had nothing but Librano propaganda shoved at them for their entire lives, and believe it to be Truth.
Parasites on our country these Libranos. Parasites.

  4. Dion: “Where I’ve been convince that the environment and the economy must be together…”
Reminds me of a joke about a Quebecer upon finding a pair of boots he was looking for, “And there they were, two alone and one together.”

    The obligatory post on Islam:
“The absolute last thing we are involved in here is a ‘clash of civilizatoins.’ Our civilization is in a fight to the death with
a subhuman barbarism. With folks who believe in a Whorehouse Heaven which they can get into by blowing themselves
up in order to murder women and children.”
“Islamofascism is a frenzy, a mass delusion. What all such mass delusions have in common is an incredibly intense psychological energy that is impervious to reason, reality, and morality.”
    ibid.
The Jihad cannot be reasoned with. It cannot be bargained with. It cannot be treatied with. It is not amenable to diplomacy, which it will view (correctly) as a sign of weakness, timidity, fear, and lack of resolve. It can only be surrendered to, or destroyed. Its ultimate victory is certain, unless it is defeated, because it is certain that it is doing the will of God. And if Allah is with Jihad, who can prevail against it?
Defeating Jihad requires a projection of moral force and intellectual force, of intellectual and moral clarity and will. America, Europe, and the rest of Civilization must say to the face of Jihad –
“You cannot win. We will not let you win. We will do all that is necessary to defend the Western principles of intellectual freedom, religious freedom, political freedom. We will not let Islam be victorious over Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and the freedom to be Agnostic or Atheist, or to follow any other religion. It is not we who must change – it is YOU who must change. Islam must change. Islam must leave the 7th century behind, and emerge into a 21st century of freedom, tolerance, multiculturalism, diversity, and liberal democracy. Islam must learn to accept the legitimacy of other religions and cultures. Islam must learn to live as a Faith that accepts the legitimacy and equality of all other Faiths. Islam must learn to live as a culture that accepts the legitimacy and equality of all other cultures. Until Islam learns this, we, the people of Civilization and freedom, will stand in solidarity against Jihad.”
When the Jihad movement understands that it can only fail, that it cannot win, that it does not have the strength to win, that it cannot emerge “victorious over all other religions,” then the Jihad War will be won, or will begin to be won, for then, but only then, the Jihad movement will begin to dissipate, to lose its morale, to lose its hope of victory, its reason for being.

  5. It is not that they could care less it is that they are oblivous. They truly do not think of the west in other than a paternalistic manner. I do not believe they understand the depths to which the west despises the toronto elites.
    enough

  6. Gee, maybe I shouldn’t have kidded the Toronto Sun about after Alberta goes nuclear (in the oil sands plants), nobody is gonna push us around.
As other knowledgeable people have pointed out, using natural gas to produce crude oil is like spinning gold into lead.
So nuclear power in the oil sands makes good economic sense.

  7. Enough. I hear you brother.
I’m in the same boat. CPC supporter financially and otherwise.
Sometimes feel like one of those people that flog the Watchtower magazine. Get your ass kicked most of the time.
I’m not giving up on the Ontario idiots though. Got the Missus converted and now working on the Daughter and Grandkids. Hard sell, but maybe…..just maybe….

  8. Canadian Sentinel you are correct.
I have read this somewhere before, that like a goldfish doesn’t know it lives in water, current Canadian MSM and an extremely high percentage of journalists do not know they are socialists and so they write.
Conservative administrations are their enemies in Canada. Period, and it shows.
Where are you Rupert Murdoch and FOX Cable news?

  9. Mr. Dion has nothing to say about the fact that oil is a very important strategic commodity to all the world. Even those poor thirsty people in Afghanistan with NO WATER still need to cook and heat and drive and sterilize. The strategic water argument is another Mo Strong/UN pitch. IMO, they have a bigger problem selling and promoting that BIG LIE though because, on a huge portion of our planet, water falls freely from the sky. It is called rain/snow. Or hydro power for those of us lucky enough to know how to harness its tremendous force. Those who don’t believe in harnessing it for power, have still figured out how to bottle it and market in every price range right up to $30-$50 bottles. There is now glacier water, spring water, perrier etc.etc. IIRC, there are some Libs like Paul Martin and Mo Strong who are big believers and investors a bottled water company.

  10. For more on Holland, listen to Diane Ablonczy being interviewed by Stirling Faux (subing for Dave Rutherford) here … Bring up Mon. Feb 5 … 9 am … Diane at 9:04 followed by callers at 9:20.

  11. Rattfuc: Do as I did, tell them if they continue to vote liberal they are out of the will. It helped defeat landslide Annie last time. As an aside, a friend of mine has converted her father, a former strong supporter and party worker in election readiness in Edmonton has tore up his membership card. One person at a time, convincing another person and then those two working for us makes a big difference.

  12. Here is a copy of my e-mail to all MSM newsrooms.
    Dear sirs,
Why have the outrageous comments of Mr. Holland made on the Adler Radio show on the Chorus Radio Network on Thursday February 1st 2007 in the 2:00 PM time slot, not been picked up and broadcast by your network? Considering the media frenzy over the alleged “Dog” comments, it would appear that the MSM is jumping all over anything a Conservative may have said or not said and hiding anything outrageous coming from a Liberal or NDP MP!
In case you haven’t heard, Mr. Holland came right out and stated that the Liberal Party of Canada would shut down the oil sands projects in Alberta in order to meet our so called Kyoto Commitments! He has since been back pedaling faster than an Italian Tank in the Second World War! He went farther, he said “they would not allow expansion to increase so Alberta could give the oil to the Americans”. Last time I looked we sold our energy products around the world and didn’t “Give“ them to anyone!
No amount of Liberal spin can take back his words of Dion’s “Hidden Agenda. When are you Liberal apologists going to start being fair and delve into and report on this plan of the Liberal Party to destroy the economy of Alberta, NEP II.
Oh sorry, I forgot, the voters of Western Canada don’t matter to the Toronto/Ottawa based media or the Liberals that you are so obviously supporting.
    Sincerely,

  13. CBC reports that there will be a vote on the Kyoto motion tonight. (cbc.ca)
It talks about Harper’s recent letter on Kyoto as a simple fact,
but casts liberal inaction as something the CPC accuses the Libs of.
Nice little media bias trick. The Lib record is something that’s only an “accusation”.
Course no mention of the Libs recent threats on the oil patch. That, of course, would shine the light of potential COSTS of Kyoto and Dion’s radical agenda.
We wouldn’t want balance, or perspective to get in the way of the inevitable “conservatives are evil for regecting Kyoto targets” story line.

  14. Just posted a comment on ctv political blog stating that reporters were doing a great job covering climate change. “In the Hot seat – This weeks question period”. Should be interesting to see if they post that comment as opposed to my previous comment that did not make it.

  15. And if you’re one of those out there scratching your head about why this is such a “big deal” – imagine, for a moment, that Stockwell Day had blown into Montreal in 2005 and mused on live radio that a Conservative government might make transfer payments to the province contingent on Quebec going English only.
    That help?

Not one bit. The Conservatives have MPs in Quebec and over the past 40 years have had more than a few. So they have something to lose in Quebec. But when it comes to Alberta, the Liberals and NDP have absolutely nothing to lose there. So they can say anything and it doesn’t matter how pissed off Albertans get about because they have no way of punishing those parties for it.
    That help?

  16. Talking about long memories, a good majority of those that suffered greatly during the nep were children of those that went thru the dirty thirties and never forgot what their parents went thru. Now we have the children of those that suffered thru the nep remembering the suicides of family memberss, the farms and homes lost, the divorces and many other horrible events. Alberta consists of 3 generations of people who have seen their economy ruined. They will not put their children and grandchildren thru anything like that again, even if it means telling canada to go you know what. Read the comments in the g&m today re the possible election of a PC party and separation. Many are telling Alberta to go, and Albertans are saying let us help you pack.

  17. From the comment before on where to draw the border, it would be at the Sask/Manitoba border. BC and the Yukon would join Alberta and then talk to the US for preferential treatment as new “States”, that gives the US three new stars on their flag and a direct route for a pipeline from the Artic and Alaska oilfields right down to the US, and they would own the Pacific, no more arguments on Salmon fishing or softwood lumber since it would be all US now…. They would also have access to all that clean, green Hydro from BC that California needs so badly, not to mention all that fresh water that would now be a US asset and would not be subject to Free Trade negotiations on export to the US.
The CWB would have to negotiate with the US to allow transport of our wheat and barley to the new US port in Vancouver to be shipped to China and Korea. Taxes in the new Western States would drop significantly and health care access would improve. With the arrival of “attributive taxation” we would finally see some good roads in the western provinces as all road taxes on vehicles and petroleum products would have to be spent on the roads, not go into general revenue. Saskatchewan would finally get some road repairs done, Kate would appreciate that.
The cost of pasta (wheat), bread (wheat), beer (barley), softwood (BC) and gas/natural gas/diesel (Alberta) would skyrocket in the ROC – new Western States, not to mention the cost of beef and hamburger… and all that izzy money would stay west instead of subsidizing bozoes like Stephanie and his ilk…

  18. mary T.
Wow, cut them out of the will? You’ve got balls!
Mine are still young enough to be legitimetly stupid.
I have to admit, when I had the opportunity to vote for the first time, I voted NDP!!!
That was back in the early ’60’s when we were all young and stupid.
I’ll give them a couple of more years of grace. If they don’t see the light, they don’t see the cash!
    Sounds fair to me.

  20. “So they can say anything and it doesn’t matter how pissed off Albertans get about because they have no way of punishing those parties for it.”
    – McClueless
Repeat after me: It’s none of your socialist business and to prove it, if you form the next government, we’ll make you into lame ducks through withholding revenue. Money talks.
    That help?
Hey, if you think it’s tough being a Conservative in Ontario, try being one in downtown Toronto. Nonetheless, I convinced more than 10 people to vote Conservative last time. Given French Citizen Dion and Taliban Jack, a lot more will come around next time. Oh, and I managed to piss off a couple of Liberals canvassing yesterday.

  21. Obviously, the only solution that will give Alberta a federal voice is for all the people there to vote Liberal.

  22. Ahh, yes, McLala and the Genocide Fan have got it right:
The only way to get ahead is to align with the Peter Pans or the Flip-flop Mafia. That way, despite giving everything away, we’ll get a handout back.
Thanks, bozos. I won’t attempt to get ahead by losing 50 IQ points.

  23. Mary T, a long while back in this thread you asked, no doubt rhetorically, “Why does newman always give a little laugh before he says anything about the conservatives, but is very serious re lib goofs.”
I hardly watch him anymore because I can’t stand his condescending attitude towards anyone/thing that isn’t Ottawa establishment, aka the Librano$ and the CBC, itself.
He’s a pompous, entitled, stuffed shirt, and clearly favours “Canada’s natural ruling party.” He does seem a bit stunned, lately, that they’re not still in power and doesn’t quite know what to do with the CPC commentators who very often one-up the NDP, Bloc, and Lib bullshi**ers.
It’s clear that Don Newman is NOT an unbiased or even professional journalist. ‘Ever seen his press panel, with the TorStar’s Jim Travesty and Susan (get-a-new-hairdresser-why-dontcha?) Delacourt, Rob Rousseau (?) from one of the Canadian presses, and a CBC Radio-Canada talking head? Could anyone, by a leap of either generosity or objectivity, call this panel “balanced”? The CPC and especially Prime Minister Stephen Harper are fodder for their sharp knives, and I find myself yelling at the TV when they get them out.
I believe that Don Newman is an avowed Liberal Party supporter. ‘Only problem is, no one has to tell you; it’s obvious every minute of every broadcast, Monday to Friday, all year long.
I’m not masochistic enough to watch anymore.

  24. Thanks iberia, your humourous comments can put a smile an any Albertan (or ex). vote Lieberal… priceless!

  25. BATB, right on, Newman is, has always been a Liberal, ditto, full of himself Duffy, God’s gift to Canadian journalism.
Neither of them talked about the young Buffoon Holland and his little stint on the Adler show in Alberta. They absolutely know all about it but, as with all Liberal gaffs, can’t talk about it.
Watching QP today, Holland lost his voice, no questions asked!

  26. “Obviously, the only solution that will give Alberta a federal voice is for all the people there to vote Liberal.”
Should the concerns of a region only be addressed if they vote for the governing party?

  27. To “Schwarze Tulpe” (sp?)
If you go to this link, which is the Edmonton Journal’s link, it gives you the latest news about the sexual predator charged this p.m. after assaulting an 8 year old in Victoria School.
    http://www.canada.com/edmontonjournal/index.html
It doesn’t say that it’s the same guy who was tackled by parents, but I imagine that will be found out down the road.

  28. BATB. Some of us have to watch just to see how ignorant they can get. I think today that Ezra gave neman answers he didn’t expect. Harper won question period in my opinion, and if he asked any questions (Holland) I missed it.
Big topic, if the budget is on March 20, and a Que election March 26, how will that affect the Bloc vote on the budget, and if Que doesn’t get the money it wants, how will that affect the vote. Newman tried to get Ezra to admit that Harper is going to hurt AB by his new green stand. Ezra come back with, that will never happen, and basically, if AB industry is hit, so will all industries in the rest of the country, even the auto sector. Chretain was wrong to exempt them from targets. He also implied that all cdns will have to change, not just Alberta. And, he talked fast enough that newman could not interrupt. Jeff Norquay also gave the same lecture. We have Holland making his stmts and at the same time Hillory is saying she would take the profits of oil companies, and do something with them. Notice she said PROFITS, not higher taxes. So, with the two of them, does that mean the end to the oil industry. Why make a profit if she is going to take it.
That polar bear photo making the rounds is a phony. They are stranded on ice scultures made by waves in the artic. Waves come from cold water, not warm water.

  29. “But when it comes to Alberta, the Liberals and NDP have absolutely nothing to lose there. So they can say anything and it doesn’t matter how pissed off Albertans get about because they have no way of punishing those parties for it.”
Geez, Rob, is it really acceptable to vote for parties that have so much contempt for Canadians?

  30. Another thing Ezra said: With the bias of the media and the indoctrination of the media re the science of global warming, there is no way one can win the argument the science is wrong. Declaring co2 a toxic chemical was wrong, then said, I am expelling it now. Therefore, forget the science, the media will never let the truth get out and go with things that can be done. Setting targets for all segments industry.
    Newman never said a word.

  31. remember folks, its pierre turdeau, pierre *TURD*eau.
Ive reached the conclusion that global warming/whatever label is the latest is so much hot air. this is because I actually dare to listen to all sides of the debate and allow myself to be persuaded to change my view.
the biggest reason for this change was the point made that a couple pinatubo or st helens or a nice big fat krakatoa can heave umpteen years worth of man made ghg into the atmosphere, making homo sapiens contribution moot.
and the result of these eruptions? a marked DROP in global temperatures.
    so, who’s to say?
schtephaaannnnn diooooonnnn (say it in a monotone whisper) has committed too many foot in mouth acts to track; including environmental issues on which he is clearly clueless. ANYTHING he or any lieberal mouthpiece should put forth can be ignored.
I truly in all the time I have observed the cdn pol. scene some 40 + years have never seen such a goofball dimwit in the leadership spot of any party or riding association or advocacy group.
jeezuz help the nation if he gets so much as a minority.

  32. Eskimo said: “WLM Redux: I remember NEP1 very well. Do you also recall that at about the same time we were “enjoying” interest rates on mortgages in the 20+ percent range. Of course this didn’t matter to the typical eastern Canadian with a government job. Nisku was literally a ghost town. Houses were being sold for less than half of what they were worth. I know of a new office building (+/- 50,000 sq. ft.) that sold for 10 CENTS on the dollar. The bank took what it could get. There were stories of suicides. MANY broken marraiges. Even more messed up kids.”
Please don’t remind me brother…we were there once. Every time I remember the things that happened to myself and my friends ( we were all young marrieds or new parents at the time) I want to cry and then I get furious. The dreams that were smashed…the potential that was cut short…the spirits that were crushed……
I don’t like the type of anger remembering this evokes in me….I’m trying to warn these pimply-assed Liberal ideologues that where they are treading with Alberta is evoking the same rage in millions of other Albetans as it does in me…this rage is now suppressed and mostly put to rest…it is an ugly rage gained from an ugly experience…I want to see it put to rest for good…it is a dangerous repressed civil rage that is shared with the NEP generation of Albertans that I would hate to see unleashed again…because a people aroused by a common rage become a force that is hard to contain…old angers over NEP can an will dissolve this nation it it is aroused.
I want to put insulated fools like Dion and Holland on notice of this.

  33. Mr Akin, in response to my pointing out the mistake, has just changed the title of his post to:

And deleted the two, perfectly polite, comments I made on it.

  34. For those who wanted to know, yes, the guy who was tackled by parents at the elementary school in Edmonton last April after the victim of a sexual assault identified him, is the one and the same man who is charged with this latest sexual assault. He’s 23 years old, and they claim that he’s a serial sexual offendor. His first name is Jonathan, but I couldn’t get his last name.
I just heard this on the local Edmonton CTV channel, and they showed his pic and also his arrest from last April when the parents tackled him and called police. Apparently he was held then, but they didn’t have enough on him to detain him. However, after further investigation this incident may also be added to his charges.
One for the good guys. 🙂

  36. Most of us have been as Albertans hoping Harper would deliver reforms we could live with in equality with other Canadians. So far he has. Where in hover mode because we have had our hopes up before. Just to be dashed by these leftist crooks. Time & time again!!
As stated before most Albertans I believe are realists not separatists . We have given many times over back to this Confederation to the point of idiocy. Still we had a man in with a real vision now.
Well, with this media blackout we see the forces arrayed against us. Now we see the extent of the rot. I have little hope sanity will rein in the Ontario mindset of the socialists hordes in Toronto. To much promised them. Money for nothing, day care for free.
Frankly with Countrymen like Dion who needs Islamists? There like barbarians.
With reluctance I think we should leave as soon as feasible. This has become a strangling culture in its final death dance.
One thing the East also forgets we really do love individual liberty here. Freedom is not a word, but a mindset as well a lifestyle here in Alberta.
By the way. From Ontarians who have become Albertans I here Northern Ontario is plagued by the same elitist group. Abusing their recourse’s with little benefit except towards Toronto.
We will not be destroyed as they did the Maritimes!!! If Dion is PM, its going to bleed this Nation to an instant death .Cut a main artery & see how long you last. That goes for the lifeblood of the economy as well.
The NEP is seared in our brains as is the depression & theft of bank accounts by Eastern banks. A multitude of crass insults, if not blood spilt by these hoodlums. We will not have another raid. This is real, not an idea. Its now mainstream. Thanks to the Mark Holland’s of Canada.

  37. Where are you Rupert Murdoch and FOX Cable news?
Completely blocked out of Canada as a purveyor of local news. As I understand it, they can only broadcast US news and issues in Canada, effectively freezing them out of Canadian news reporting. That was the deal the Liberals forged. Check wikipedia for this history.
I love Fox not just because they are the only conservative voice on cable, but, they often run lead stories that they pick up from bloggers. They have figured out that citizen journalists have more integrity than the wire services.

  38. Haven’t heard anything about the Holland threats from PMSH or the Cons. party…..a LITTLE more than disconcerning!…(unless I missed it)

  39. Frankly with Countrymen like Dion who needs Islamists? There like barbarians. um, a bit over the top there, revnant.
None of our politicians are like barbarians, come now.
Power-hungry, egomaniacal socialist weenie klepto hypocrits, yes, but barbarian, not so much.
Let’s save the “barbarian” adjective for the head-choppers and child-killers. Otherwise, we’ll just end up referring to them as “the really, really, really barabarian” when we want to discriminate between head-choppers and mere flim-flam artists and pocket-pickers.

Liberals’ environmental caps on oilsands designed to keep Ottawa on top of West
    Lorne Gunter, The Edmonton Journal
    Published: Sunday, February 04, 2007
In 1980, during Alberta’s last energy boom, the federal Liberals — who had been out of office for nine months during the Joe Clark hiccup — won re-election by portraying Clark as a puppet of the Alberta government.
One Liberal ad that ran only in Ontario contained footage of Clark (a prime minister from Alberta) and Premier Peter Lougheed talking together and smiling. The voice-over said, “Ontarians should pay attention to the budget that demonstrates how easily Joe Clark would give in to Premier Lougheed and Alberta on energy prices.”
Privately, among party organizers, Liberal campaign manager Keith Davey loved to sum up his campaign strategy as “Screw the West, we’ll take the rest!”

Font: ****During the election, there was no talk of the National Energy Program (NEP) the Liberals would impose on the West one year later, a program that taxed away about $160 billion from Alberta’s economy during the 1980s.
Only once during the campaign did Liberal leader Pierre Trudeau make even a vague reference to his plans should his Grits retake office. He told a meeting of the Halifax Board of Trade that he would impose a “made-in-Canada” price if elected, one that would force Alberta and the other energy-producing provinces to sell their oil and gas at below world prices within Canada.
Publicly, the Liberals claimed their interest in Alberta’s energy was simply to ensure “self-sufficiency,” so Canada would not be dependent on foreign energy sources. However, as Marc Lalonde, the architect of the NEP, would later admit, the major impetus behind the program wasn’t “Canadianization” of the energy industry (driving out the American companies that dominated the oil and gas sector), or getting more money from the oil industry, “or even self-sufficiency. The determinant factor was the fiscal imbalance between the provinces and the federal government.”
While the Liberals told voters their goals were more Canadian ownership and decreased reliance on foreign oil, their real purpose was to make sure Ottawa remained the big dog of Confederation.
The Liberals were worried that if Alberta and the West became too rich, Ottawa would lose some of its ability to dictate national policy. Ideas other than the Liberals’ might become influential and that would never do.
So they devised a scheme to tax away our prosperity and wrap the attack up in noble rhetoric.
Well, it looks like 1980 all over again. Only this time instead of self-sufficiency as the Liberal buzz phrase for their raid on the West’s once-again booming economy, it will be “sustainable development.” Instead of economic nationalism as the excuse for their power grab, the Liberals will use the environment. They will claim they are merely out to save the planet from global warming, but their real goal will be to save Ottawa’s chokehold on power.
In the upcoming campaign, they will make scant mention of their schemes to wrest control of the West’s newfound money and power, but expect them to portray Alberta-based Prime Minister Stephen Harper as a shill for Big Oil and the Alberta government.

  42. Just heard Peter Rathgate say that the deep freeze in the east is here for a while. Also stated that Winnipeg has recorded the coldest Feb 5 in 50 years. Where is that global warming when you need it. I think it is funny that today in the House of Commons all the talk was kyotology and global warming etc, when the majority of the mps are from areas that are freezing. Shows how out of touch they are. And, who will be the villian when it is proven that the targets can’t be met in the time frame. The opposition parties or the government. When Harper announces targets that will hit everyone in the gta how will they react. London is going to tax car owners up to 700./yr to park their cars in front of their homes. Will Harper tax motorhomes, boats, quads etc for parking in driveways in gta. How about a huge tax for those going to the cottage on wkends. And, remember, don’t visit Toronto as canadians are killed there and it is a dangerous place for tourists.
Wonder how long Hollands voice loss will last.
And, to prove that the democrats in the US have
not had a new idea since at least 1916, go to Rush and read an editorial from the NYT, dated 1916, where it lambasts the democrats for helping the enemy and saying Germany is no threat to world peace. Substitue the words taliban and Iran and it could have been written today.
I think the cbc is very afraid of a Harper majority, no senate seats, no GG, no funding.

  43. AGAIN….why hasn’t Harper tarred and feathered Holland??…Is he also prepared to trade the tar sands for eastern votes????

  44. I think it’s interesting that while Albertans will always vote Conservative, Quebecers vote for whichever party they feel will give their province the most benefits: Liberal, Conservative or Bloc. As a result, Alberta is always left at the dance without a dancing partner.
The Conservative party (especially when in power) knows that no matter what, Albertans will vote for them. If they don’t pander to central Canada, and especially to Quebec because voting patterns are so volatile there, they won’t remain in power. The Liberals, on the otherhand, rarely win any seats in Alberta, and consequently Alberta’s interests remain secondary to them. Hey, it’s a fact of life that governments first look after those that can keep them in power.
On second thought, it looks like I was only half-joking earlier about the idea that Albertans vote Liberal if they want to have any input or benefits in running this country.

  45. lberia.
I would gladly run in the Alberta wing of the Party Quebecsquawk if I could be assured of our hasty exit out of Canaduh.
problem is I honestly want out. their agenda is the status quo of constant ransom notes.
