United Nations Kash-For-Kim Program

Typically absent of mention in the mainstream Canadian press, the Opinion Journal outlines another breaking spending scandal at the United Nations (h/t);

The tale is similar to Oil for Food in that money for programs designed to benefit North Korea’s poor appears to have been used instead to sustain the government. While the total amount of cash spent by the UNDP in North Korea isn’t clear thanks to the opacity of U.N. record-keeping, any hard currency is manna from Turtle Bay for the isolated Kim regime. If dollar amounts into the tens of millions over nine years are accurate, that’s money that would have helped Kim stay in power and continue his nuclear weapons program.
The documents we’ve seen follow the program back to 1998 and the era of detente between Kim and the Clinton Administration. But what’s especially alarming is that the UNDP’s programs have persisted in North Korea even as Kim has banished U.N. weapons inspectors, raised the volume on his threats, tested long-range missiles and even tested a nuclear weapon–all in defiance of the U.N.’s own stated positions and Security Council sanctions.

And, as in so many things UN scandal related, the name of a prominent Canadian appears yet again;

Whatever the motive, the Cash for Kim scandal is one more blot on the record of former Secretary General Kofi Annan. It also raises questions about the role played in North Korea by Maurice Strong, the Canadian who was Mr. Annan’s envoy to Pyongyang.

Maurice Strong is also known as the “architect of Kyoto”.

UNITED NATIONS, January 19, 3:30 a.m. — This morning one part of the UN Development Program’s lack of accountability is exposed in conservative media: the Wall Street Journal at midnight, and Fox News online thereafter. The Journal’s story is more detailed, quoting a Kemal Dervis letter earlier this year that “internal audit reports are important management tools for Executive Heads and, therefore, confidential.”
How Mr. Dervis’ ultimate boss, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, will feel this looks for his widely-stated new, more transparent and trustworthy UN, will soon be seen. While 58 senior officials were asked to submit resignations by January 15, Mr. Dervis was not among them.

As they did Saddam Husseins Oil-For-Palaces efforts, it will surprise no knowledgable observer should it turn out that UN corruption has, at least indirectly, helped subsidize Kim’s nuclear weapons program.

  1. Maurice Strong !?! The Maurice Strong of Power Corp? The power behnd the throne of the liberal party?

  2. And, there is a draft Kofi to run in the elections in Ghana for Prime minister/or president.

  3. I am shocked to learn this. Shocked, I say.
Mother Earth weeps tonight for the reputation of her tender servant, Maurice Strong.

  4. Another “dollars for dictators” program courtesy of the UN. Funny that the same old players are involved, like Chairman Mo.
This will be the litmus test for the new UN S-G Ban Ki-Moon. Will he elect to cover it up like his predecessor or get to the bottom of it and restore some sense of credibility at Turtle Bay?
Strange silence from the MSM in Canada, but then again they pretty much ignored that whole Oil-for-Food thing.

  5. It is the same old players alright, Bill Strong. This is the biggest scandal in the world and the players appear to be world wide too! If anyone here, like myself, is wondering why the USA would not let Mr. Bolton stay at the UN, I think the answer is right here- some people in the USA are on the Mo tse Strong money for nothing, control the world dream machine, too. The msm is involved, if they were not they would be broadcasting this with nostrils flared.
George Bush and John Bolton are two of the most courageous men in the world today – look at what they are up against. All that stands between Canada and a Korea type arrangement is Stephen Harper and his minority government; USA has only the President and a few good people to defend them; it appears.
I hope that Mr. Moon will prove to have a good spine, maybe he will … Wake up Mr. Wallace and Canada’s ambassador to the UN too. This is way too serious to let die.

  6. Hey Jema54, I would add John Howard of Australia to that Bush / Harper list.
Tony Blair in some respects but he’s a lame duck.
Geez it’s a damned shame Maggie Thatcher is out of the picture, because Great Britain is floundering in the hard nosed leadership that is needed to counter and clean up the corruption in the UN.

  7. Surprise, surprise! The “Useless Nations” proves itself ineffective again. Unless the purpose was to distribute wealth and prop up powers in third world countries, dictatorships and the like?
I think the fish smells from the head down and perhaps we should be looking at a more “exclusive” club, if you know what I mean.

  8. Kash n Karry Nukes by Kim
If you want global warming in a hurry, a couple of 100 mega tonners should do the job.
A balmy 10-100 million degrees celsius, and rattle everyones cage while we’re at it.
Gee, I’m glad that little annoyance called the Non Proliferation Treaty isn’t getting in the way.

  9. Joe Molnar; Much appreciated additions – The Honorable Mr. Howard is high on my list too! And Tony Blair has exceeded all my expectations considering his Party affiliations. Thank-you for saving me from a error of omission.

  10. a few more countries deserve honorable mention as well.
    1. Holland – whose troops are fighting bravely in Afghanistan along side our own brave soldiers.
    2. Estonia and Poland – who, beside the Dutch- are making the rest of the euro-weenies look like the true cowards they are

  11. Maybe its time for democratic countries operating under the ‘Rule Of Law’ to abandon the corrupt UN and join a club – “A coalition of The Free”
Stop financing a useless boars nest of dictatorships living in the perpetual “world food bank.”

  12. UN : Home of the global Kleptocrat….and a perfect “humanitarian” cover for belly-crawling profiteering communist scum like Moe Strong.
Moe has laundering dictator cash for Kim Park and has a thick network of Korean communist party “captalists” ready to pocket any “guilt revenues” he can direct from liberal nations to Korea through the UN/WBF/IMF.
Hearing this latest revelation I want to know two things:
    1) What happened to all the excess money Canadians donated to the Tsunami relief fund that was sitting Moe’s CIDA trust fund?
    2) Why hasn’t Harper put out a standing arrest warrant for this greasy global fraudster if he ever sets foot in this nation again?

  13. Albert4 said: “Maurice Strong !?! The Maurice Strong of Power Corp? The power behnd the throne of the liberal party?”
    >>Actually Moe is the EX-CEO but he maintains close business ties and was instrumental in setting up Powercor’s China investment firm: “AsiaPowercor”. Today he resides in Bejing in palatial digs, investment consort to the Chi-com Oligarchy/kleptocracy and owner of a Chinese citizenship card but a Canadian passport.
Many say he’s avoiding prosecution in the US by staying in China but the truth is this has been a period of unprecidented 1st tier investment in China by international banking…Powercor among them… and Moe is the go-to man on what palms to grease to make a deal happen…I bet the little turd skims 20 points off the more lucrative deals.
No, Moe ain’t hurting….about the only threat facing him is the Air he breaths as it’s choked with toxins from Powercor’s coal fired power plants which drive this Chi-com industrial explosion….completely unrestricted (strangely enough) by UN-Kyoto carbon regulations or any domestic environmental restrictions….the unfettered industrial filth in the Chinese air is the smell of unregulated, untaxed, slave labor-generated gold that 19th century western monopoly barons like JP Morgan fanticized about….now a reality in China.
I hope Moe chokes on it.

  14. If pollution and emmissions are such a huge problem, and if kyoto will solve them all, and if Mo Strong was the author of kyoto, why is he living in a country that is doing nothing to reduce emmissions. Why is he subjecting his lungs to all that greenhouse gas. Sounds like, do as I say, not as I do, or typical liberal scam.
