During my stint at the CBC Election Roundtable earlier this year, I critiqued Jack Layton’s plan for “focused, targeted steps to support creative people and to make sure Canadians see themselves in our culture.”
I can’t continue. My eyes are bleeding.
And before you, dear reader, object – be advised that I am an artist. In fact, the most common type of artist, a living, breathing, working one of the unheralded “commercial” variety. Unlike our cousins in “the Arts,” we manage to make a living at our craft without seeking comfort from the nanny state wet nurse.
I forgot to add – “or offering it.”;
The Lactation Station Breast Milk Bar is partly funded by a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts.
That moaning you just heard was the sound of John Williamson curling up in a fetal position on the floor.

If you think Lactation Stations are something to get excited about.
OCAD holds an open house every year that you would’nt believe.
A couple of years ago we visited to find 6 or seven plaster casts of vaginas mounted on a wall.
Also a video that some student apparently shot of herself and set up in a 5 minute loop.
The video was a 20 something year old girl walking around a house foundation excavation site in a white dress.
This was apparently her thesis.
OCAD does have the coolest building in Toronto however.
Stanley Kubrick just rolled over in his grave. So what do ya figure Ti? After the Coroba are ya up for a little of the ultraviolence?
A little of the fifth perhaps?
Sick socialist fucks like you will find your own hell….just remember to hum along.

Who could disagree with the proposition that if they can’t support themselves through legitimate private sales, they should find another occupation.
Or find a second one.
And just stop demanding a chunk of my livelihood.
Now if all those Conservative-voting farmers got on this bandwagon we’d really be getting somewhere.
i’ll be the first to admit being a bilingual failure, but isn’t the English translation of Ti-guy
“tiny penis” ???
Might explain the hate on for Kate’s successes.

A heads-up on how conservatives and other grown-ups are likely to read that: ‘poor anon, sounds like he hasn’t done very well financially …’
Sorry to disappoint you Dim, but I’ve got an $800K+ RRSP, $200K+ cash on hand, a house and car paid for, no debts, and business interests worth over half a million and growing fast, I’m filthy, rolling in it. Just because I don’t dress up and go to tittie bars, and cafe society in general, doesn’t mean I haven’t “done very well financially” but I like to remind the left-wing whackos that they are hardcore participants and beneficiaries of cash-churning capitalism.

You beat me to it, Fred, although it might also match what’s between his/her/its ears.
Some worship a god; some a goddess; some are godless.
Gaia is the newest goddess; she of the Maurice Strong pantheon at the Palace of Kyoto.
Gaia is brimming with milk/honey, here, even though she appears lachrymose/pregnant. Venus, Gaia is not.

anon: Totally misread you as one of said left-wing whackos! I read you as being in favour of the “art installation” for the spin-off effects — you are obviously keenly familiar with the myriad and spurious “spin-off” fallacies.
Good on you! You’ve indeed done well, but George Soros would probably not concur that you’re “filthy”. Smile.
My net worth (up to the time of this post — just did a Excel re-cacl) is $17.35 million. But, er, I’d prefer to maintain my privacy and you’ll simply have to accept that on good faith. And it even rises despite the time I waste here. Smile.
typical leftie thought’s swirling around again, as Angela put it Harper Majority Anyone. I believe the Canadian taxpayers are starting to wake-up, listen & VOICE THERE OPINION’s after years of seeing there hard earned tax money go to endless wastebaskets. This is also why Wacky Jacky will never form the government(although he came close last year when he jumped in bed with his leftie cousin’s) ya the bleeding heart’s will be around but the number’s are getting fewer. Small business people such as kate & others who are trying to survive & are not asking for handouts for there talent’s are the ones that i would always support. Why because Iam a small businessman & i understand after years of seeing my business tax continually rise I see some hope at the end of the tunnel. Oh and Jack BTW i really so hope your kissing cousin Bob Rae succeeds in his bid because we REALLY DO REMEMBER HIM here in Ontario & WOULD LIKE TO THANK HIM AGAIN!.
Yes Angela We Can Say Harper Majority
Have a Great Weekend all
Working around and with artists these past months has been quite an eye opener. Their attitude is one of aboriginal entitlement, child like innocence combined with arrogance and a condescending view of most others not in their world. Making a subsistence living is most acceptable in their world, making a good living, is, for the most part, not. Most of them seem to be looking for their “Patron Saint” that will see them through the tough times. Unfortunately artistic culture and peer pressure, if they wish to remain in the artsy community, dictate that tough times will last forever. Being financially successful is just not the in thing or acceptable. Robert Bateman is looked down upon by “true” artists because of his success. The individual I work with has finally had enough of the art world, he is approaching 60, and wants a better life for his wife and young daughter. Have you ever tried to change the thinking of a 60 year old anyone? After months of telling him it’s my way or you can bloody well continue to starve, break through. His biggest problem after my tug a war with him is coming to terms with almost a life time wasted living in third world conditions and realizing that now he can concentrate on his art. He has lost a number of his artist “friends” because of his newfound lifestyle but in his words he has found a life strategy instead of living a life tragedy.
A couple of comments about the artsy crowd, they are very pleasant to be around and genuinely care about others, it’s just to bad their attitude towards success is so warped. As far as the Ottawa/CBC art crowd is concerned does anyone know if there is a way you could retroactively drown them all at birth.
“Best thing to do is ignore Ti-guy. He must be off his meds again.”
Nah, he was traumatized by being weaned too early. Maybe he should visit the lactation bar?
maryjane: Got a chuckle from your ON-TOPIC remark re:agricultural subsidies, with which I completely concur. A true libertarian will argue against all subsidies on the simple premise that some people are helped at the expense of others. The “benefits” are concentrated and point-at-able (viz. vote-generating) while the costs are dispersed and unseen (risk free vote-wise). A wildly optimistic view would be zero sum; but in reality because government is a high-overhead operation, the result is negative-sum. We are ALL impoverished somewhat, though we don’t quite know why!.
I’ve mentioned this elsewhere, but Frederick Hayek in “Why I am not a conservative” stated that while conservatives will argue against industrial subsidies they will often favour agricultural subsidies. You are in exalted company with this topic anyway.
He called himself an “old whig” (classical liberal) instead.
Canadian Observer: Good post. My daughter is a professional musician in New York. I know intimately whereof you speak (but it’s getting better!)
“Robert Bateman is looked down upon”.
For his near photographic representation, eh?
For the obvious super-high non-fakeable skill, eh?
JUST IN CTVnewsnet: Scott Brison say’s he would cancel the planned GST cuts if he became PM. Good going there Scott just what consumer’s want no GST cut, that should give your leadership bid a boost.
Hey here’s a thought you should become the finance critic?
bryar: Well that’s usually good politics unfortunately being that the NET tax consumers greatly outnumber the tax payers.
And I mean, a cut does COST the government money, right?
That is true MND no disagreeing on that point, however when governments are showing record surplus’s on the backs of the taxpayer, Tax cuts are alway’s a welcome relief no matter what form they take.
And we must remember his statement is coming from the party that had a redbook plan to eliminate it entirely.
Sure it was the hated tax of the time but we must remember that it did do exactly what it was mean’t to do, unforntantly a previous gov’t. just did not apply it properly, it became there endless little piggy bank for there useless wastefull programs.
Looks like this is just one of a long line of taxpayer-funded trash And before YOU TOO jump to conlcusions, I’m a real artist–a classically trained musician. Our support comes mainly from patrons, NOT taxpayers.
Get a load of this steaming pile of shit:
Dobkin’s original titty bar
bryar : oh, be assured, we agree! I was attempting irony, not very successfully.
Milton Friedman on taxes:
I am in favor of cutting taxes under any circumstances and for any excuse, for any reason, whenever it’s possible.
Me No Dhimmi asks: “LESBIAN … SINGLE PARENT….Are these the new ‘mum and apple pie’?”
Uh-huh, MND, you’ve got it.
No more moms in their kitchens, wearing aprons, pulling cookies out of the oven. No cache. Not cool. Do such moms even exist? (Well, yeah, we do. But we’ve been rammed into the closet, so we can’t nail our kids’ feet to the floor to make sure they don’t get socialized: Hats off to “Patrick,” the CBC producer who asked about my stay-at-home kids, “How do they get socialized?”)
If I tried to mount an installation called “Mom’s Homemade Cookies and Milk Bar,” with me in dirndl skirt and apron, I’d have to fund it myself: No government arts grants for good, old fashioned, healthy fare, no matter how genuinely counter-culural it would be.
To get a grant, I’d either have to go topless, embed glass shards into the cookies along with the chocolate chips, or maybe include breast milk in the recipe.
Oh yeah, and I’d have to be a LESBIAN…SINGLE MOM…
new kid, just think of the possibilities if you were a single mom, lesbian farmer.
Single mum lesbian farmer of colour?
Ka-ching, ka-ching!
The possibilities are endless…
Ti-Guy,
What a typical socialist. Insults a woman because he disagrees with her opinion, nope, nothing fascist about that. How do you feel about Jews and visible minorites Ti-Guy?
More breast envy by the socialist left. I mean shoot, who can’t see how much the NDP, Liberals & other freeloaders look for a free lunch.
That is, if there not suckling at the government teat already.
I would agree with one poster here who observed .
That perhaps being bottle fed , by there progressive parents. Has unhinged them to the point where they now desire that warm fuzzy period in there life, where all was free.
Kind of like the Canada they created. Only the milk is polluted.
This type of Art only makes boobs out of them.
Bring out the ripe tomatoes.
As for Ti-Guy. What a cad. If this is how you respect the ladies your in for a long lonely life. Sounds to me you suffer from little man syndrome. Only in your case, its in a distinctively personnel, private, place.
ti-guy is lucky he didnt say the things he said in front of me.
Hi, Kate. I too am an artist (but don’t support myself at it. Way to go girl!) I’m firmly of the opinion that governmental support (in the US, Canada, or anywhere) tends to degrade art. I also think that a lot of this sh*t is raved over because no one wants to be perceived as uncultured.
hey guys & gals don’t even respond to trolls like ty guy not worth it don’t waste a breath nothing, ignore, they are typical lefties that do not see any other point of view other then there own they will go after kate & others comments to no end, in other words if you can not share with them because they have not worked a day in there life they still feel entitled to receive monies from your hard earned wages simple as that. wacky jacky though is going to have a run when his kissen cousin Bob Rae Days becomes the lib leader.
ya Bob you knob we in Ontario can’t wait, we still remember.
I’m with Simon and FREE. Unbelievable. Go suck your’ thumb, Ti-guy. I call Roshambo, and I go first.
Bring on the meritocracy. I’m sick of funding all these effing parasites to the detriment of my kids.
Seems to me that their problem is the fear of being responsible. ‘They’ have something that ‘I’ don’t, and ‘I’ want it, but ‘I’ am unwilling to ‘earn’ it. How dare ‘we’ demand that these people be ‘responsible’ for themselves. They’ve made a lifestyle choice and I have no right to make a judgement upon it. Because ‘they’ have ‘it’, ‘it’ must have been gotten by nefarious means. Therefore, ‘they’ being immoral allows ‘me’ to justify the means to the end.
Art stands on its’ own merit. Subsidising art is giving another way to avoid responsibility.
I’m really starting to feel like a sucker. Being a responsible adult means that we have to support all the irresponsible adults? Maybe I should just relax and let others pay my way as I indulge in my juvenile pursuits. I wonder what would happen if we all did that…
Social responsibility is one thing, encouraging deviancy is another.
Steve
I hearby nominate the CCA (Canada cOUNCIL OF THE aRTS) for the 2006 Booby Prize for taking a natural part of human life and reducing it to a $9,000 con of the Canadian Taxpayer.
To New Kid and the rest of the moms that gave their kids the best that money can’t buy, my undying thanks from dads everywhere.
To Texas Canuck: Thanks, buddy, for the kudos! Breastfeeding my kids has been one of the joys of my life; I’ll take it over a double-breasted suit, a briefcase, and a six-figure salary anyday. To H___ with the glass ceiling.
BTW: HAPPY FATHER’S DAY to you and to all the other dads who have dared to grow up and take on the responsibility of a wife and kids: Way to go!! We need more of you!
I had to have Fathers Day yesterday. It was the best day of my life. The queers wouldnt understand anything about it. To all that have earned it, HAPPY FATHERS DAY!!!!
Hey Kate….it could have been worse. Much worse.
Just imagine if some whacko from Toronto or Montreal had decided to have a semen-slurping bar to get rid of “negative stereotypes”…..
No pasteurazation required…..it’s au natural, you get to drink it right fromt he spigot.
Nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to these lefty-artistic types. Especially those who can’t draw, paint, or sculpt…only offend.
Oi Vei!
PS….Ti-Guy, you need to get some help with that chemical imbalance. Maybe a few shots of breast milk would help.
new kid on the block:
Queer double-dads (not that there’s anything wrong with that … and they themselves use the term!) was the feature story in the Vanouver Courier, which rag I glanced thru at a cafe waiting for my order. About 5 pages of queer double-dads and double-mums adopting stories. In the same issue, a Geoff Olson was frothing at the mouth about Harper being a Nazi for allowing a free vote on SSM even alluding to the Nazis and their little pink triangles identifying homosexuals. Bloody depressing it was!
My girls are 36 and 33 and happily living in other countries.
So absent the Courier’s good wishes, I thank you new kid on the block for those kind words!
You’re welcome, with pleasure, Me No Dhimmi: And many more!!
Yeah I saw the stack of that rag on the floor in my lobby. I did a favour to everyone in my building and threw them in the cardboard recycle bin.
Lactation smacktation. A phlegm-filled Fluids Fest — complete with Boogers ‘n’ Mash and eye gunk pies — is a much better ideA
