Melting Down Our History

Editorial Times on the fate of rare artifacts under a Hamilton “gun amnesty”;

So, are the Liberals out to rewrite history in Canada, by denying its existence? As a government they had little use for veterans on Remembrance Day, barely acknowledging them in government departments throughout Canada.
Now, in the gun control zeal of Liberal dominated Ontario police forces, erasing the tangible evidence of Canadian history is just fine, apparently. After all, according to Deputy Chief Leendertse, gang-bangers are apparently lining up to acquire muskets and antique firearms for their next drive-by pop. Therefore, Canada’s heritage has to go.

The Hamilton police have since “softened” their stance.

Hamilton police will now try to save a rare 200-year-old British musket from the War of 1812 after a plea from the Canadian War Museum not to melt it down.
[…]
“It’s our intention to contact the owner of the flintlock” to ask if they would consider donating it to the national war museum in Ottawa, he said.
“Ultimately, if an owner wants it destroyed, regardless of the historical value, we will be proceeding forward with their wishes for destruction,” he said.
“That includes the Brown Bess.”

Now, try wrapping your head around this one – in a country where citizens enjoy no property rights, where just weeks ago we witnessed an election campaign that promised confiscation of legally owned handguns – Hamilton police are now declaring these same gun owners have magically retained the authority to dictate how firearms are disposed of after they’re surrendered to the state – even in the case of an artifact with national historical significance.
This incident should to be filed away for future reference – say, for example, the day a farmer decides to run a tractor and cultivator through an endangered plant species growing on his property .

  1. Only in Canada would we destroy important historic artifacts such as this…
Good thing we don’t have ancient Buddist statues, or some such thing in this country.

  2. Bit hard to see how the origonal poster manages to blame the Liberals on this, but they do.
Hard to get worked up over this one. Hopefully, some kid gets molested in a bathroom somewhere by a black guy. That’ll get the yobos drooling, eh Kate?

  3. bcl; Why did you choose the word “drooling” instead of “foaming at the mouth”?

  4. BCL – why don’t you go back to your own pitiful blog and write about how sad it is that the great hope for the Liberal party has decided not to honor the country with her run at the party leadership!
You obviously don’t have anything of value to add to the discussion here because you come up with the most idiotic and innane comments that just prove that you really don’t “think” for yourself, but have allowed the liberal koolaid to influence your brain!

  5. It is my understanding that this musket is not considered a firearm under the Canadian firearms act.
I believe that there is a cut off date by way of age,in which you would have to register it as a firearm. Plus, these are non cartridge firing. They fire a .50 cal ball for jeebus sake!
The sad thing is,many an historic firearm is lost in amnesty..no self respecting criminal hands in his glock .40 for Raptors tickets.
I have seen bolo Mausers, lugers, webleys all turned in ..it is a shame really..oh,and if you think some of those really expensive war souvenir lugers and vintage Brown bess muskets are all destroyed, you live in a dream world. There are cops that have become quite wealthy dealing these out the back door to collectors.
Look at the firearms unit that was completely disbanded a few years ago just for that very reason..

  6. The statist “hired guns” at the ready here: No amnesty for this farm family.
Note: The acronym “OPP” (hate acronyms) is: Ontario Provincial Police. “OSPCA” is Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Chickens and people are not animals, apparently? What say you?
Egg farmer & his wife & their six (6) children ordered out of their farmhouse- no breakfast allowed- to stand outside their house while bureauc-rats ransack their home, including the childrens’ bedrooms- children driven to school by their mother without breakfast as they could not go back into their house.. & more… In Canada in the year 2006…. fascism rears its profane, evil head… fascism. You and yours could be next.
Corporate egg producers/marketers have co-opted governments & their attendant bureaucracies. In league, these fascists are monopolizing the egg/poultry market in Canada. +
Dispute over egg production far from over
SOUTH GRENVILLE The fallout from a recent standoff at a farm near Shanly continues to grow.
Approximately 50 protesters from various landowners groups gathered at the OPP detachment in Prescott Tuesday morning to demand the detachment investigate not only its actions at Shawn and Paula Carmichael’s farm March 23, but those of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, OSPCA and Ontario Egg Marketing Board. An attempt to seize chickens and eggs by way of a warrant turned into a lengthy standoff during which inspectors and other personnel were blocked from leaving. A compromise was worked out; most of the eggs and hens were left at the farm.
However, several hundred birds died during or within days of the attempted seizure. The birds were not treated humanely when they were caged in a truck without fresh water for hours, it is alleged.
Prior to packing the lobby of the OPP station, Ontario Landowners Association President Randy Hillier noted the police have a “fundamental duty to uphold the law” and made specific reference to sections 445 and 446 of the Criminal Code of Canada, which deal with cruelty to animals.
Hillier added “If the OPP saw anyone else” doing the actions of the CFIA at Carmichael’s farm, they would “charge them with violating the criminal code. Why did they not take action that day?”
In addition to presenting 20 separate witness statements of what individuals saw during the raid and photographs, Hillier also stated the group wanted the OPP to turn over their notebooks for the landowners’ review.
Leeds-Grenville Landowners Association President Jacqueline Fennell was the only member of the group permitted to go further than the lobby of the Prescott detachment. However, Grenville OPP Commander, Inspector Brent Hill, did come out to the crowd and collect the statements and photographs provided by witnesses.
Hill confirmed the OPP would “investigate all statements” provided by the landowners, but noted the investigation of animal cruelty complaints will “require some expertise,” which he himself does not have. “We will evaluate, get back to you through Jacqueline (Fennell),” he added.
However, he also told the group it would have to access the OPP’s notebooks through the freedom of information act. A form for a freedom of information request was also provided by Hill.
Hillier also asked Hill why the OPP were involved in a lengthy undercover surveillance operation at Carmichael’s farm prior to the raid, to which he replied “I can only assume” that a request was made by a federal agency for assistance.
Carmichael himself was also present at the protest. He confirmed he has hired a lawyer. When asked for a status update about the situation at his Shanly road farm, he said “Basically, at this point, we’re tallying up (our) losses and carrying on.” +

  7. The purpose of Canadas existing gun laws has nothing to do with public safety. All legislation and and Orders in Council brought in since 1995 have the sole prupose of “denormalizing” citizen gun ownership. Public safety, personal protection, sport shooting, property rights, and historical artifact preservation are trumped by this basic Fascist philosophy.
The Liberal government confiscated every privately owned firearm in Canada in 1995. They will, for the moment, let you store it for them if you do it in the most awkward way possible, and you must pay them to lease it back. (Licensing and Registration.)
Fortunately, millions of Canadians have to some extent ignored this totalitarian travesty.
It will take some time turn this statist crap around…

  8. BCL,
Perhaps if you knew anything about firearms and the history of the law with respect to them, you would know why it is easy to blame the Liberals for this situation. The gun in question is a long gun. One cannot participate in an amnesty unless one was heretofore not in compliance with a law requiring said amnesty. The Liberal government of Jean Chretien created said long gun laws. Ipso facto, the Liberals are to blame.
    Clear enough?

  9. The whole long gun registry is a cruel joke with a rather expensive 2 Billion dollar history.
The legislation worked so well it protected 4 Mounties from being slaughtered with an AK47.
It is problematic when the parole program releases unstable people into the community and they go and pick up a gun anyway, prohibited or not.
People with criminal intent are hardly going to register their guns. The usual method is to steal or buy on the black market, use it in the commission of a crime and discard it.
If one is a smart criminal, why would one keep evidence that ties one to a crime?
As to exempt historical firearms what is the point? Is there evidence of a rash of robberies involving flintlocks, and muzzle loaders? You’ve only got one shot, so you better not miss!
I think most police officers would be able to draw their side arms in the time it takes to properly reload historic firearms, say 60 seconds, 45 seconds if you are fast. If a police officer took longer than this, they probably haven’t been at the target range in a while, and their skill set is impeding their survivability.
Way back in high school I built a functional .45 calibre muzzle loader from scratch, Firearms Act exempt. I wouldn’t really qualify as an owner; perhaps the correct description would be manufacturer.
In any case, I would say the risk of guns being built in metal shop classes these days, after Columbine and Taber, are relatively low. It would be the adventuresome school board indeed that allowed functional weapons to be produced in shop class. I am eyeing my hunting knife now and wondering should I turn that in as well?
After a while it all gets a little stupid, as governments are often want to do, scraping up a wedge issue to justify their existence. What the government needs to do is act on the legislation they already have on the books, rather than trying to look good for the electorate, or getting good copy in print.
If I want a nanny or baby sitter, I have one in my rolodex or contact manager. The government should go find something substantive to do like
look at the ratio of police officers relative to the population. Have they been keeping up with population growth lately?

  10. Kursk: I believe that flintlock long-arms are not liable for registry (but you do need an FAC for it and to buy your black powder) but that percussion cap pieces, like those of the Crimean War and the US Civil War, even when muzzle-loading, do require registration–I assume because of their more-reliable means of ignition. And to get even a flintlock pistol, you have to jump through the same hoops as to get a handgun licence for a modern piece. Or so I was told by a reenactor friend from several years ago.

  11. Canada has no history. The story of Canada is constantly re-invented to suit whatever is politically correct at the moment.

  12. Hans:
Not to nitpick, but it was an HK91, not an AK47. Which doesn’t matter in the least. The weapon could as easily have been a pick-up truck. Murderers and nutbars on the loose is the problem, not the tool used. Until this reality is understood by everyone, we will continue to loose our history, traditions, and rights.
Keep fighting, Hans, I’ve got your back!

  13. Andy; Flintlocks are exempt, logically, caplocks should be too. Does anyone know how many taxpayer funded jobs, another Maritime substitute for welfare, the gun registry provides in New Brunswick?
While we’re on the subject, let’s give credit, as due, to Kim Campbell and Brian Mulroney who reacted the the infamous “Montreal Incident” by initiating the campaign to demonize gun owners and the Devil’s instrument they utilise. The Liberals merely carried on the good work started by the Pretend Conservatives, Mulroney/Campbell.
Someday, I expect the history of Canada to be completely re-written to expunge any political incorrectness.

  14. Let’s not forget that this whole “Farmer Bob Rifle Registry” was a 2 billion dollar Liberal publicity stunt concocted after Gamil Gharbi (better known to the politically correct media as Marc Lepine) murdered 14 women in Montreal.
Mr Gharbi/ Lepine was no hunter, farmer or gun collector, but the son of an Algerian immigrant who abused his wife and kids. It obviously affected young Gamil, because he went so far as to change his birth name, presumably to try to erase the bad juju old Dad afflicted on his family. Gamil’s sister Nadia was also affected by her violent upbringing and ended up dying of a drug overdose.
The MSM constantly refers to Marc Lepine as if he were an ordinary Canadian just like anybody else.
Like the hiphop handgun murders in Toronto, I can’t see how cultural background was not an issue here.
Licia Corbella wrote an excellent article on how GHarbi/ Lepine was not a typical Canadian running amok. So did Mark Steyn.

  15. just to clarify, “The legislation worked so well it protected 4 Mounties from being slaughtered with an AK47.” It was an HK 91, and as far as the brown bess is concerned, CDN politicians are A-hats!

  16. So perhaps what Canada needs is anger management courses for those afflicted by abuse; whether it stems from government or family members.
If one is angry, then maybe it is time to address the root causes of anger rather than the tools used in the expression of anger.
If one is angry at government, does that necessarily mean that we all haul off and shoot the dumb bastards? While the thought may give us some momentary glee, most reasonable Canadians aren’t insurrectionists manning the streets with pike poles, torches and muskets.
Maybe we need some good historians like Michael Bliss or a Jack Granatstein to give us a good accounting of the 1837 Rebellion. Usually people get pissed off for a good reason, mostly because what occasionally passes for “Peace, Order and Good Government” is plainly not.
I don’t know if we need a Boston Tea Party, but given some residents in Quebec, maybe we could use a good old fashioned “Maple Syrup Party”.
Maybe that would sweeten the occasionally sour mood in the country!! I would wager that the Quebec maple syrup farms would be happier too.
Lets see now, polished my musket, flapjacks on the griddle, Quebec maple syrup, some English breakfast tea and the hockey game is on tonight.
Well the good news is that this country can come together, you just need the government, to use the hockey phrase, to “show up”.
It looks like the opening SALVOS from PM Stephen Harper yesterday look to make a memorable Parliament to start dealing with real rather than phantom issues.
From Don Newman’s column Natioal POST, April 6th, 2006
OTTAWA – Laureen Harper didn’t see it coming as she relaxed with her kids in an observation gallery. Suddenly her husband, on his first day in the House of Commons as Prime Minister, looked to her for confirmation that seduction wasn’t his strong suit.
Now, it might not come as a surprise to anyone that Stephen Harper’s idea of a romantic encounter is a vigorous 10-second handshake before turning out the bedroom lights, but her jaw dropped before she laughed as the eyes of the Commons turned in her direction.
To put this in context, the Prime Minister stood accused of seducing former Liberal minister David Emerson to cross the floor and join his Cabinet. “Mr. Speaker,” he responded, “I do not think I have ever been accused of seducing anyone, even my wife.”
He paused to see if he was in trouble before his spouse nodded. “And I see there’s some agreement in the gallery.”
It brought down the House, so to speak, and graphically illustrated just how relaxed Harper was in the job of providing government answers instead of asking futile questions as Official Opposition leader.
If this was the season opener, Harper hit a home run.
Should this become a trend, the Liberals should be very VERY afraid at what appears to be a cool-under-fire rookie Prime Minister backed by Cabinet ministers in firm command of their files.
Then again, it would’ve been hard to look bad given the limp Question Period launch by the once-mighty Liberals. After all those years in power, it seems nobody bothered to collect AMMUNITION that could be used in the event they were defeated.”
Isn’t life grand? Maybe Laureen will be seducing PM Stephen Harper if the looks to the gallery continue!!
    Further along:
Chuck Strahl, showing no signs of losing steam while BATTLING terminal lung cancer, gave back better than he got in both official languages as the minister under ATTACK from agriculture critics echoing the concerns of farmers protesting on Parliament Hill.
“It is no wonder the farmers out front are calling for action from this government, because they certainly did not get any from the last government,” Strahl retorted.
    I rest my case.

  17. In the case of this so called gun amnesty, the reality is it is just another theatrical placebo meant to dupe the population into the notion that guns are the root of all evil/crime..
….hypocritical at best as police use guns to enforce the peace and protect themselves from criminals at the same time spreading the myth that armed self defense is a right denied the citizen….the gun is a tool to protect or defend the person behind it. This is the reality that the Statist dystopian left uses deconstructionist propaganda and police state remedies to obliterate… to repress a right of free citizenship in the public mind. To do it they engage in dozens of asinine theatrics like confiscating kid’s water guns or raiding toy stores and “seizing” toy guns…or offering “amnesty” for surrendering civilian arms to police (as if they would let a crook go who turned in a gun used in a crime)…totally vacant police state theatrics that obfuscate a more sinister motive.

  18. BTW:
The greatest official denial of fact that I have heard in my life time is when Liberal deconstructionists started spreading the myth that Canada does not have a gun culture. Any historic record of our nations development (that has not been politically sanitized) will tell the story of a wilderness that was tamed largely by men exercising the British common law civil right to bear personal arms for personal defense.this was born out throughout our history from the citizen militias in the Galt colonies and war of 1812, to the Steels scouts and western militias in the Riel rebellions and the 200 years of Canadian legal judgements that supported a civilian protecting himself, his family and property with a firearm he has a right to own for that purpose. Canada is awash in arms t built specifically for or in our nation; the HBC trade rifles, the trap door Snider Enfield carbines, Martini Enfield carbines and RCMP Winchester 86 Mannlichers . Many locally made percussion pistols and revolvers, Canadian Webley-scotts and a dozen locally made break-top small caliber revolvers that the Canadian civilian population bought for personal defense in the post confederal era. Then there were the historic Ross rifles and Canadian modified Lee-Enfield #4Mk1 long branch rifle still used by Canadian rangers, the long branch Stirling SMGsthe lowly and well loved Cooey rimfire rifles of the nations farmers, trappers and kids. Today we have the Diemaco , timberwolf , para-ordnance. These are lasting concrete artifacts of Canadas history and our gun culture a civil and responsible gun culture by all historic fact.
Is it any wonder that Canadas deconstructionist utopian left must erase this rich history of responsible civilian firearms ownership if they are to usher in their statist socialist dystopia ( complete with police state functions). Is it any wonder that the last desparate act of a corrupt Liberal dystopian regime under Martin was to promise a law that would have put 200 years of Canadian historical record into the grinder? From The HBC and voyageur belt pistols to Riels Colt, to Sam Steels Webley to darcy McGees .32all would have been taken from museums and collectors to the grinderall to placate a utopian concept which has never born fruit for anyone other than political autocrats.

  19. Big city troll spews this venom:
“Hard to get worked up over this one. Hopefully, some kid gets molested in a bathroom somewhere by a black guy. That’ll get the yobos drooling, eh Kate?”
Probably the second most credibility-vacant, vulgar and criminally stupid statement made on this blog.
Once again it shows mr that wherever there is a partisan fanatic the level of civility and intellectual merit plummits faster than the gibbering dystopian’s IQ.

  20. Mad Mike, CDN by Birth:
Thanks for the correction re HK91 vs AK47, both however use the 7.62mm rounds.
The german answer to the AK47 assault rifle
From Heckler & Koch Gmbh (a US and NATO supplier):
The rifle that started the young company on its way to becoming the preeminent tactical firearms manufacturer during the latter half of the 20th century was known as the G3. In the early 1970s, before semiautomatic copies of select fire battle rifles or “assault weapons” became really popular, Heckler & Koch adapted the model 91 as a semiautomatic counterpart to the G3 that was deemed importable into the United States until 1989. The most prolific of the HK90 series to be imported, the 91 was on its way to becoming the most popular rifle import from HK, beating out the 93 in U.S. sales by almost 20 to 1.
Almost identical to the G3 externally, with only the select fire internals missing, the flipper magazine release deleted, the front pushpin area replaced with the “shelf” and the grenade launching ring omitted from the barrel, the HK91 was considered the “Rolls Royce” of battle rifle copies. Introduced at a staggering price of $400 or so dollars at the time, they were unbeknown to most, a significant investment, with most genuine examples bringing now close to $2000 used.
Very deadly when you are on the wrong end of them as our 4 Mounties regrettably found out.
Hardly the kind of stuff you need for wildlife hunting on the praries.
If you are in a firefight like the Princess Pats recently in Afghanistan, the full military version looks like just the ticket.
    More here for those interested:

As the comedy channel once suggested:
Never let germans, who know their way around guns, get angry.
The OICW proposed weapon looks particulary deadly with its airburst 20mm munitions.
Only military need apply for purchase orders.
US wants them apparently in 2009.
If you are on the receiving end, OUCH!!

  21. You have to feel sorry for the bigcitytroll. He’s lost in a political wasteland and now his hero has been exposed.
Todays globe has a story about a new book detailing Trudeaus early years. According to the book he was a treasonous separatist/terrorist. “In a school text in 1936, he wrote that he would deploy terrorist-style tactics by detonating enemy munitions plants; in a prescient bit of timing, he said he would return to Montreal in 1976 and lead an army “to declare the independence of Quebec.” It goes on to say that he was a fascist (read Nazi) sympathizer and an avowed anti-semite.

  22. Re. the myth of gunless Canada: just look at the mother country, Britain, you just have to watch the UK version of the Antiques Roadshow to see how common firearms’ ownership for personal protection was in Britain before WW2. All sorts of pistols for men (flint, cap and cartridge); small pistols for ladies; ones made to fire on a tripwire rigged to the door of your inn in pre-railway days etc. are all commonly shown on the show. (Not too mention Michael Bellesiles’ fraudulent work, Arming America, telling the same lie re. American history.)

  23. kursk and andycanuck
There are no restrictions on antique flintlocks. The cops had theirs heads up their asses when they even accepted it. Perhaps somebody realized that a Brown Bess (if that’s what it really is) is worth a ton of money, and the gun wasn’t intented to “make it” all the way to the furnace.
No FAC is needed to purchase this type of gun. Anyway, there are no longer any FACs. Your probably thinking of a PAL (possession & acquisition licence) but that wouldn’t be required either.

  24. Harley Joke for you
On a farm lived a chicken and a horse, both of whom loved to play together.
One day the two were playing, when the horse fell into a bog and began to
    sink.
Scared for his life, the horse whinnied for the chicken to go get the farmer for help!
Off the chicken ran, back to the farm. Arriving at the farm, he searched and searched for the farmer, but to no avail, for he had gone to town with the only tractor.
Running around, the chicken spied the farmer’s new Harley. Finding the keys in the ignition, the chicken sped off with a length of rope hoping he still had time to save his friend’s life.
Back at the bog, the horse was surprised, but happy, to see the chicken arrive on the shiny Harley, and he managed to get a hold of the loop of rope the chicken tossed to him.
After tying the other end to the rear bumper of the farmer’s bike, the chicken then drove slowly forward and, with the aid of the powerful Harley (oxymoron), rescued the horse.
Happy and proud, the chicken rode the Harley back to the farmhouse, and the farmer was none the wiser when he returned.
The friendship between the two animals was cemented: Best Buddies, Best Pals.
A few weeks later, the chicken fell into a mud pit, and soon, he too, began to sink and cried out to the horse to save his life! The horse thought a moment, walked over, and straddled the large puddle. Looking underneath, he told the chicken to grab his hangy-down thing and he would then lift him out of the pit. The chicken got a good grip, and the horse pulled him up and out, saving his life.
The moral of the story? (Yep, you betcha, there IS a moral!)
When You’re Hung Like A Horse, You Don’t Need A Harley To Pick Up Chicks!

  25. Prime Minister stands up for Canadian farmers
    April 6, 2006
    Ottawa, Ontario
    Notes for an Address by
    The Right Honourable Stephen Harper
Prime Minister of Canada For Delivery During an Emergency Debate on the Crisis in Canadian Agriculture
    House of Commons
    Extract:
Simply put, Canadas New Government is going to go to the wall on the issues that matters to our farmers and rural communities.
In the recent election campaign, we made a clear commitment to stand up for Canadian communities.
And standing up for Canadian communities means standing up for all communities be they urban or rural.
For far too long in this country the interests of rural communities have been ignored by those in power.
And so I stand in this House today, Mr. Speaker, to let rural Canadians know that that era of neglect ended on January 23.
No longer will the concerns of rural Canada fall on deaf ears.
Rural Canadians from coast to coast to coast finally have an ally in Ottawa.
I do not say that we can fix the neglect of a decade overnight, and I know that our producers do not expect that, but in the weeks, months and years ahead, our government will move ahead, not with mere words but with actions.
This Government, with our Agriculture Minister leading the charge, is going to give Canadian farmers the respect they have been denied them so long.
For the first time in 13 years Ottawa is going to listen to Canadian farmers and begin to deliver results they deserve. +

  26. Typical Liberal leftist totalitarian thinking. Whats mine is mine if elite. Whets yours is mine as well. With no property laws or rights of personnel ownership. Any government in this Country can confiscate all you own . No compensation. No humanity.
In the US that has private property laws you have imminent domain. Same thing . Only they have to pay a token. Anyone who can show they would pay more income tax, can oust the owners of property by city councilors. With little compensation. We need iron clad private property laws. The sooner the better & avoid the pitfalls, our Southern Cousins are now fighting.

  29. “No FAC is needed to purchase this type of gun. Anyway, there are no longer any FACs. Your probably thinking of a PAL (possession & acquisition licence) but that wouldn’t be required either.”
If you aren’t worried about having a PAL to trade in these guns then order a caplock pistol kit and see 😉
I have a friend who was a curator of the Bow Museum’s arms collection. Under the last rash of anti-gun hysterics the Liberals wabted him to carve serial numbers on all his historic arms without them.
Also if you ever go to the Bud Haynse auctions you will see the percussion muzzel loaders and revolvers still need to be registered…the only antique cartridge guns that don’t require registration are guns chambered for ammunition that has not been made for a number of years…you’s think this would include the Sharps rifles and webley rim fires but no it doesn’t…the fact of the matter is that the regulations on this monster of a law change at the bureaucrat’s will and also upon the descretion of a local gun control bureaucrat.
It’s safe to say that NO GUN is exempt from registration unless you get a signed document to that effect from the head of the CfC.

  30. Only in Canada would we destroy important historic artifacts such as this…
    Jim, only in Hamilton…
More eyes should scrutinize what isn’t reported by The Hamilton Spectator. It does a good job at covering up and fabricating the news instead of reporting it. But what do you expect? It’s part of Torstar which leans Liberal.
I used to respect many of the articles that were printed in The Spec until lately – especially the editorials, which have become anal expulsive in their support for corruption.
Kate, thank you for posting an article about Hamilton.
Maybe if Hamilton starts noticing that they are being scrutinized by others in Canada, the Spec and the City’s professionals will realize they are deluded by their own mirrored reflection of themselves and pay attention to what they REALLY look like.

  31. C-68 has to go, and IMHO for a very important reason overlooked by many.
It is federal criminal law that is so foolish that it is widely ignored.
An informal “coffee shop” survey of my friends and neighbours showed:
Of 8 people I asked that morning, 7 admitted to owning at least 2 or more guns. Total of 23 guns of various types and calibres.
Only 2 of these people had posession licenses.
These 2 people only registered 3 of their guns.
One lady only got her license so she could conveniently buy ammo for the unlicensed.
    Well over 90% non-compliance!
The point? What damage is being done to the credibility of other, important, laws?
Stupid laws are ignored, and thereby damage the good laws we need for civil society.
Oh, and Hans: Another nitpick, sorry. The HK91 fires the 7.62 x 51 NATO round (.308 Win.) whereas the AK47 fires the 7.62 x 39 Russian. Other than roughly the same diameter bullet, completely different ammo.
The HK’s delayed-roller-locked-bolt is a brilliant design, used on many of their weapons, including the ubiquitous MP5 SMG. Trust the Germans to design good machinery; in fact Sgt. Kalashnikov stole essential design elements for his infamous AK47 from the WWII German “Sturmgewehr”.
    Oops, I got carried away… 😉
