Or Probably Not

“I’ve probably put more money into the military than almost any prime minister.” – Paul Martin

Phantom Observer;

Now, the area in red represents the actual dollar figures (in billions of Canadian dollars), while the green represents those figures converted to 2005 dollars. While the Liberals report a spending increase (and in some years they’re not lying), in terms of real spending there’s been a decrease, and a fairly significant one at that.

More at the Meatriarchy in the comments. ;

This is so infuriating. Dwayne does the research that some, no, any reporter should have done to call Martin out on his claim.

Well, now it’s been handed to them. Let see what they do with it.
Update – More figures from Babbling Brooks here and here.

  1. About 25 years ago, Charles Lynch, then known as “The Dean of Canadian Journalists” to his peers, stated, on Jack Websters’CTV talk show, that Watergate would never have happened in Canada. Not because Canadian politicians are any better than their U.S. counterparts, but because Canadian journalists had no ambition as investigators of governments. Lynch said that there were no Woodwards or Bernsteins in Canada at that time. In the years since, I’ve seen very little to suggest the situation has changed.
You bloggers have had to take over from the lazy, fat cat MSM. I’m quite new to the bloggosphere, but in a few months’ blogging I’ve seen more and better investigation on blogs than in 25 frustrating years of poring over every newspaper and magazine I could get my hands on. Good work bloggers, especially SDA. Thank you.

  2. I’ve noticed a similar trend here in the US. Which is why we’re starting to see some push back in the shape of stealth legislation to try to muzzle the unwashed purveyors with the impudence to think that their keyboards give them the same rights as the guys who own printing presses and broadcasting facilities.
Bloggers everywhere should continue to check their sixes.

  3. Reference to the “sixes”…do either of you know the antecedent to that expression???
    Serious question – Thanks

  4. Paul Martin claims Stephen Harper would take Canada to the right, the american extreme right.
Well, Comrade Paul, I would rather go that way than your way, which would have Canada going in the direction of the extreme left, The Chinese version of extreme left.
    The choices are…Harper american right…
    or Martin Chinese left…
    Choose your Canada….!

  5. “The choices are…Harper American right…
or Martin Chinese left…”…you can look that one up under NOBRAINER!!!

  6. Reference “sixes”
12 o’clock is in front of you
3 o’clock is on your right
9 o’clock is on your left
    6 o’clock is behind you
Its a fast method of telling people where an object is relative to their position.
    Cheers.

  7. And continuing from Chris, the phrase “check six” is how a fighter pilot describes looking over his shoulder to detect possible enemy attack from his rear.
    Cheers

  8. PMPM announces he is the idiot that approved the script for the attack ad on the Canadian military.
    a stuttering stupid apology.

  9. Kate,
We’ve had a few calls now asking to participate in a poll about the election. In fact, one KEEPS trying to call over and over. When they ask if we’d like to participate I just say “No, I want to keep them guessing!”
They’ll get my truest picture come election day….

  10. One of the biggest problems facing the Armed Forces today is the demographic hole that exists at the middle-senior ranks. That demographic hole is there because of FRP (the Force Reduction Program) which took place in the early/mid nineties.
That FRP happened because governments saw the opportunity to raid defence spending for pet projects after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Oh, and who was the Finance minister at the time who eviscerated his military? That’s right, the one who, 12 years later finally figured out his earlier mistake.
As an aside, the biggest debacle of the 93 election was the promise to cancel the heilcopter contract. As a result of cancelling that contract, we lost a huge amount of industrial investment in Canada, paid a half billion dollar penalty, and all we gained was the ability to kick the can down the road so that we fly antiquated Sea Kings in the interim. It’s a poorly guarded secret that every competition run to replace the Sea Kings since 93 has gone back to the EH101, and the only reason that the contract hasn’t gone through is that the Libs are aware of the political ramifications…

  11. when they start making these kinds of jokes at your expense..you’re gone…..
thanks Bourque for the indirect link..I haven’t laughed that hard since I watched martini trying to change his story on the army ad……

    For Immediate Release
TORONTO – (CP): Paul Martin upped the rhetoric today, promising to implement a national ban on lightsabers. This follows recent policy announcements by the Liberals to ban (already banned) handguns, as well as to ban weapons in space.
“This is another example of the fundamental differences between myself and Stephen Harper.” said the Prime Minister in front of a mostly partisan crowd in Toronto Centre. “It is the role of the Prime Minister of this country to ban lightsabers.”
Martin left abruptly when asked if this ban would require the use of the notwithstanding clause over fears it would infringe on the religious rights of Jedi.
UPDATE: It’s been brought to my attention that Kinny’s Comments broke this story long before I did. I was unaware of this, but it clearly offers yet more proof of a Liberal mole, if Kinny had this story so long ago.

Speaking of Bourque>>>>> The venom in this comment shows the desperation/malice of the Liberals. ^^^
The blatant pro-Tory bias of Bourque this election has been disgusting.
Tonnes of coverage on Wacko Rondo Thomas the last three days in the Star, and he’s ignored every one.
Somebody will bring that bastard Bourque down soon.
Who wants to link to badly-written Sun articles and dubious poll results anyway… ;-)^^^

  12. Who are these conservatives anyway? The Alliance wing of the Conservatives is renowned for its opposition to official bilingualism. A Tory minority government would most likely seek to sustain itself in power by forming an alliance with the Bloc Qubcois. While the BQ paints itself as a party of the moderate left, it would form a block with the right-wing Tories on the basis of their common antipathy to the Liberals and agreement that the powers of the federal government should be dramatically reduced in favor of the provinces. Then we’ll have twelve parties, 10 provinces and the conservatives and the bloc, pulling the country apart. Thats why we need a strong Federal Government. How many conservatives were involved with Enron, oil for food or the ones we haven’t heard of Yet?

  13. Hey Sam, have a look into what Canada is before you call for a strong federal government. We are a confederation of Provinces! And the Provinces have responsibilities under the charter and under law. The federal government has been trying to usurp the powers of the Provinces for years now. The fiscal power of the central government does not necessarily mean federal rights. This is seen in the areas of health care and education, which are Provincial responsibilities that are heavily funded by federal money.
The federal government has been exceding its mandate for years, people see them now as the first place to turn when they want money. The mindless spending has been bad for Canada, I think, in the long run.

Some Liberals say the race is over, and argue a loss on Jan. 23 would benefit the party in the longer term. Some key thinkers, one Liberal senator said, “have been talking about the idea that maybe now is a perfect opportunity for renewal.”
Others are less sanguine. Many Liberal MPs in Ontario are worried about their chances of winning. And the fingers are pointing at the national campaign.
One Liberal MP said he’s pretty sure that Martin strategists are wearing “protective vests.” And he said he feels no sympathy for Mr. Martin. >>>

  15. The real Paul Martin showed up at an event in Waterloo ON last night. Deep in the heart of Canada’s high tech R&D capital.
After his speech he was grilled by attendees and not one of them asked a question regarding the evening’s topic. Just the same old time worn crap that is in vogue now.
When the grilling was over and the faithless had left he sat down and described/compared Canada’s future in the face of world competition. It was amazing, the best 4 minutes of his campaign so far, where has this PM been?

  16. If these lib candidates are worried about losing they might have had a look at their ‘sixes’ quite a long time ago. ( Not to mention the closet they stored their ‘integrity’ assuming they had any in the first place)
The handwriting has been on the wall for sometime now.
Let’s not forget that this government hobbled along illegally when they were voted down in a non-confidence vote in parliament they IGNORED!

  17. Sam,
Where have you been for the last twelve years?
If you are concerned about “the ones we haven’t heard about”, then wait until the Liberals fall and the skeletons come out to play.

  18. Coiln…Harper’s not going to have time to pull Liberal skeltons out of the closet. Running this country is going to have his head unscrewing from its’ socket.

  19. No problem Ron,
Broad mandate + Sheila Fraser = Librano nightmare
All Harper has to do is get the ball rollin’ so to speak. That should take about 3 minutes.
