Goodale, Call Your PMO

CKOM radio;

Federal Finance Minister Ralph Goodale is saying an attack ad running in Quebec was never endorsed, approved or released by the Liberal Party.
Goodale argues it is not about the ad itself, but the judgement that was made on it. The Liberal Party chose not to run it, and that he contends, is what is important. He admits politicians must be careful not to make damaging assertions without the evidence to back it up.

On Canada AM ;

Paul Martin defended the series of controversial ads his Liberal Party unleashed this week and continued his attack on Stephen Harper, painting him as a leader who subscribes to a far right-wing ideology.
In an interview Thursday morning on CTV’s Canada AM, Martin said he approved every one of the harshly critical ads — including one that suggested the Tory Leader would use the military to occupy Canadian cities.

Seems nobody told the Deputy Prime Minister, either.

  1. Is it just me, or are the communications within the LP in complete disarray?
She’s going down boys, the hate ads were the last stab.
Next step — people jumping ship.

Prediction: before the campaign is over Martin will challenge Harper to acknowledge that 911 was an inside job.

  3. Who the heck is running he Lib ship?
Whoever it is better talk to the others to get their stories straight.

  4. mark:
The “ALARM, ALLES RAUS” message went out two days ago.
David Asper (of Asper family fame) has jumped to the lifeboats to be picked up by the Tory flotilla supporting Peter Kent.
Today you are watching the bow sinking and the stern with the Liberal election pennant lifting the screws out of the water. Just a matter of time before she slips ignobly to the briny deep.

  5. I watched Canada AM and PMPM said that the ad never ran. Tsk, tsk, and Beverley didn’t call him out on it, like “liar”. If they posted the ad on their website what did they think people were going to do, not watch it and then not comment? Then to have our Finance Minister say what is quoted above contrary to public knowledge, then his credibility on “no leaks” in ITSCAM are just as creditable, no? The MSM is too kind to these hacks!

  6. Well, at least these ads are good for something…
There should be a contest for the best parody of the Liberal attack ads…I’ve seen some pretty good ones out there already, and I am sure there are LOTS more to come.

  7. Now that you mention it, we’ve all been squealing about the slam so much that we forgot about OPSCAM, ITSCAM, and about 31 or 32 other issues.

  8. Ever heard of the book “Liberalism is a Mental Disorder” by Dr. Michael Savage? The Liberal Party campaign could be a case study on the subject. They’ve just lost all perspective on common sense.
I’ve seen parties flounder in elections before, but not due by their own hand at such an irrational state of mind. I can’t believe these goofs held power so long. Bubbles from the Trailer Park Boys could run a better campaign.

  9. Unbelievable!! The military ad was not approved (or was it by Martin?) and weren’t run, which is proof they didn’t really mean it. Reality Check. The military disgrace ad has identical production values to the others, was released to media, and as far as I know IS STILL RUNNING IN QUEBEC. Notwithstanding that Mr Harper has run a disciplined, coherent and exciting campaign, I am amazed at the Liberal gaffes and stupidity. Martin tries to win debate, then makes stupid comment about NWC; Libs run attack ad, story becomes insult to military; Libs attack Tory daycare plan, becomes beer and popcorn scandal. Liberals are stepping on their p*****s on this campaign. WRT Tory alleged smuggler, congrats to Harper. While not convicted of anything, candidate had obligation to disclose anything that could affect his or the party’s reputation, so he had to go. If he is exonerated, then, should he win the riding, will be welcome back into fold. Contrast that with Liberal behaviour. Harper sent a solid message on this one – Conservative party will be accountable, period.

  10. Warren Kinsella’s prediction that PMPM will state he had nothing to do with the ads is on the verge of coming true if Goodale is already saying it.
The lies they think they are getting away with on this issue are dumbfounding. My 5 yr old is a better liar. At least she stops when she knows she’s caught.
Add this to the scathing comments that Howard Burton had for those involved in the morning’s Liberal research announcement (see Paul Wells Blog at macleans) and I think the Liberals are going to have another lousy day.

  11. They should have had me running the campaign. I would of told them to all go home and don’t say a word. No comment is better than a thousand stupid ones. Nobody is running their campaign and that is obvious. The smart ones jumped off the ship like rats when the writing was on the wall in December.
Up with Liberalism, down with Liebrano$

  12. This is like watching a bad play, none of the actors in ‘team martin’ are apparently talking with each other.
Did the Liberal’s forget to pay for their warroom’s blackberry accounts?
The confusion and failures of the Liberal war room are incredible.
    theinfozone.net
has more details on some of the crash and burns.
    Tired.

  13. Once again, you have a Liberal on damage control saying one thing (Ralph: it wasn’t approved) and another Liberal saying the opposite (Paul Martin: I approved it).
How can anybody take these idiots seriously?
It is quite obvious the ad was approved. If it is still running in Quebec, it means they are paying for it. If they are paying for it and they intended to yank it, it would not be on TV. It is.
They are lying. Why doesn’t anybody in the media just simply point that out?

  14. I gotta take a shot at this:
Stephen Harper eats Bunnies for Breakfast
    Fluffy white Bunnies
    In his kitchen
    In Calgary
    In Alberta
Is this the kind of Canada you want?
    Syncro

  15. Paul Martin on a question and answer session this morning unequivocally stated “I approved all of the ads”

  16. LIBERAL:

  17. These adds are such an insult to Canadians.
    Makes me mad.
Really motivates me to get my misguided socialist siblings to promise me they wont vote Lib this time. They’re in downtown Toronto (Trinity/Spadina)
NDP if you must but the Libs you just can’t trust.

  18. You people never change, do you?
Misdirect, misdirect, misdirect. (Do you think we’re not actually paying attention?)
The fact is, Harper is being QUOTED in the Liberal Ads. They are his words. Nobody made this shit up but HIM. Now are any of you prepared to ask the REAL questions that need to be asked about this series of ads?
    like:
Who’s planning on asking Mr. Harper to explain his “conversion on the road to Damascus”? Because I’d sure like to know how he got from “pro Iraq invasion” to “no troops from Canada”, among the many other conflicting statements we’ve been subjected to by Harper during this surreal election.
These ads focusing on Harper’s record aren’t “attack” ads. To claim such a thing is absurd. Running a picture of Chretien’s facial deformity in a mocking ad, on the other hand, IS an “attack” ad. Pointing out the actual words uttered by a candidate for Prime Minister of Canada in a series of ads during an election campaign can in no way be construed as “attack” ads by anyone other than a dyed-in-the-wool partisian hack.
I have no love for the Liberal Party, but I have even less for a party supported by the countless hypocritical dimwits like those of you I see posting here in defense of the indefensible.
Harper owes us an explanation regarding the glaring inconsistencies in his public statements. Anything less would be an insult to all of us – even you, if you had the good sense to realize it.

  19. Don’t you see what’s happening. All that Adscam money is coming full circle, home to roost.
All those high profile Ad companies in Quebec are showing their attention to detail and justifying their stratospheric charge out rates.
Talk about bang for the buck.
Up with Liberalism, down with Liebrano$

  20. Now you have Keith Martin saying An “Idiot” released the ad, Is that not the same as saying his boss is an idiot?
Mike Duffy could have fun with this one tonite, never mind the other panelist, just have Anne,Ralph & Keith.

  21. Just heard a great parody on Rutherford. I can’t remember the exact words, but it went something like this:
    Steven Harper owns a dog.
    Dingos are dogs.
    Dingos eat babies
Steven Harper wants to eat your babies.

  22. “Who’s planning on asking Mr. Harper to explain his “conversion on the road to Damascus”? Because I’d sure like to know how he got from “pro Iraq invasion” to “no troops from Canada”, among the many other conflicting statements we’ve been subjected to by Harper during this surreal election.”
Gee….I’d like to know how Martin achieved the same thing. Also would like to know how Martin wanted to promise to use the notwithstaning clause for religious people but now wants to ban it. Wanted to ban the GST, but kept it. Ban NAFTA, kept it. Wanted to eliminate poverty by 2000, but it flourished instead.
    So many questions…

  23. The ad; what it did is this, again we get a glimpse of what goes on in the Liberal mindset.
To quote Ezra Levant..Monday Dec. 26, Shotgun http://westernstandard.blogs.com/shotgun/2005/12/liberal_verbal_.html
And Klander’s vitriol is also evident in every aspect of the Liberals’ campaign. Klander’s blog, and Reid’s “blow me” line — like Reid’s “beer and popcorn” line — aren’t mistakes. They are rare glimpses into how Liberals really feel or think, like a single missing plank in a picket fence that allows a passer-by to glimpse into what normally remains hidden.

  24. Someone asked?
“Why is it still running on the french stations in Quebec if it wasn’t approved?”
Warran Kinsella said this morning, on Bill Good show, the ad is running in Quebec to remind people of Trudeaus War Measures Act.

  25. I’ve always thought that there’s nothing funny about the idea of yelling FIRE in a crowded theatre. Spending the last three weeks watching the Liberals crash into each other in the darkness may cause me to reconsider this opinion.

  26. The Liberal candidate in Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca has apologized for this week’s release of a Liberal TV ad targeting the Conservatives’ defence policies. He said the ad was one of a series of 12 and it should never have been released. “Some idiot went and sent it out with the other 11 ads, and it was never sanctioned by the party, never approved, and we are completely appalled that this went out. We apologized to the men and women in the uniform.” Martin said he approved the ad so looks like the liberal candidate is calling Paul Martin an idiot.

  27. Jonathan…You won’t get straight answers regarding Harper’s contradictions here. This is largely a pro-conservative anti-Liberal blog. Most people here are rabid in their belief that Harper sweats perfume and urinates sunshine.
Only time will tell the truth; by that time the conservative faithful will be knee deep in excuses and spin.

  28. Have a read of todays TO Star editorial page, they are 100% behind Martin and the Libs: makes you wonder! Jake

  29. arthurdecco
Please go back to your cavernous black hole called myblahg and allow your self-ignited hair fire to burn there.
This and many of the site’s you squirt your diarrhea on are run by and for thinking people. Not drive by verbal shooters like you and contrary to what you may think.
All you do is reinforce what it is really at stake during this election and why people are going to vote for the change that will start 24/Jan.
As my mother said. “The mendacity of mediocrity will always show up when the world needs to see it the most”. And you do that in spade’s. So please, go back to your sand box to play with the boy’s and girl’s there.
PS: Anybody willing to bet even money arthurdecco will come charging back like a bull to a red cape. He so dam predictable.

  30. Bullwinkle…What’s more important is who’s rounding third. I suspect it’s one of your rodent sidekick’s relatives.

  31. You know, as an American trying to keep up with this Canadian campaign, I have a perpsective that may be a little bit different.
A lot of people have mentioned that these liberal attack ads expect Canadians to be stupid, i.e., gullible without the native intelligence to perceive the obvious cognitive dissonance that the ads imply.
However, the thing that is troubling me is not that the Librano$ want Canadians to be stupid. They want Canadians to be much worse than that.
They want Canadians to be alarmed and frightened by Canada’s own sons and daughters who are serving in the Canadian military. (And some of you might recall that I’m an old VietNam vet.) This is not simply asking for stupidity, it’s asking for a sort of derangement. As if Canada’s sons and daughters would start suddenly killing Canadian citizens and residents.
Librano$ want Canadians to be craven and deceitful about the US. You’re supposed to be cowering and constantly suspicious of an imperfect but good country that wants to be the best of friends with Canada.
Librano$ want Canadians to be wimpering about the idea that some people besides criminals might be armed, that some people might be able to respond to threats with self-defense.
Librano$ want Canadians to be so pathetic that they will simply dismiss the culpability of a party that introduces organized crime families into the workings of government. They want you to be cavalier about stock market manipulations, tampering with the very security of your financial infrastructure.
And of course, the list goes on.
So my question is what kind of person would personify all of the qualities the Librano$ are hoping to mutate citizens into?
Actually, it would be a character somewhat like the gollum character in the Lord of the Rings. Canadians are not sickos. Someone who personified the Librano characteristics would be a person one was instinctively repelled by.
I am offended on your behalf.

  32. ctv newsnet has a piece with David Akin on “idiot” and McLellan & PMPM saying he approved the ads. Pretty funny.
Are any of them being run or did the Liberals just blow their whole kitty on an ad campaign they can’t run?

  33. Oh you Liberals. Such a sad showing. No it’s a great showing!
It is showing Canadians what a mess this party has become under this sorry excuse for a leader.
Keep appearing on TV Mr. Martin. Each time you trip over your own tongue. The contradictions are breathtaking.
The ads represent the over the top rhetoric of this prime minister since he came to office. No action just a lot of hot air. This morning I got the impression he wanted to run out of the room when it came time to make his fake announcement of $180 million for research. He looked dejected and sad.
Pretty soon they will have Harper eating first born babies and killing all the old people in the country so he doesn’t have to pay old age security.
When a party begins to implode you might as well stand out of the way. This is what is happening to the Liberals and hopefully the Canadian people are watching and taking note. The polls should drop to single digits if this keeps us.
Saw Jean Lapierre on TV speaking in French. He says the polls will go up for the Liberals next week. Not if they let the Prime Minister continue to visit every talk show in the country. Normally prime minsiters don’t do talk shows.

  34. Glen said…This and many of the site’s you squirt your diarrhea on are run by and for thinking people.
As long as they think along your lines, right Glen? Oh, I forgot, your mother’s as well too.
Maybe both you boys need a time out or a spell in the sandbox.

  35. I agree with Greg here… it is much more than saying we should believe the liberal lies, as we are so stupid…
It is that we should fear everything the government does not provide for us… and mistrust everything we have earned by honest means.
and I am reminded of “Animal Farm”, when the animals become drunk in the farmers house… the page turns, the gig is up, and it all becomes undone.

  36. Glen, that “artdecco” disruptor just proves the old adage that you know you aren’t over the target until you start attracting Flak.
The Canadian blogs are proving to be instrumental in highlighting, investigating, and holding into the light of public scrutiny various things your media would rather not talk about- and the best of them, like SDA, draw these pathetic droolers like moths to a flame. Lurkers like myself know to laugh, and move on…

  37. the lib party in debt now.
what happens after they blow all the money on these ads and loose all their donors next??
other than the $1.75/vote that they voted themselves in the last election.courtesy of the taxpayer again.

  38. capt bob: “Warran Kinsella said this morning, on Bill Good show, the ad is running in Quebec to remind people of Trudeaus War Measures Act.”
Thanks for pointing that out, Captain. I saw it mentioned yesterday by Mike Duffy that the ad was still running in Quebec. I thought it strange that they (Librano$) would be doing that. Considering it would be invoking an unpleasant memory of a communist Liberal demagogue who placed the armed troops into Montreal and Quebec City (via the WMA), you’d think the Liberals would steer away from exposing their sordid past in such a way. If anything this will just drive voters further into the Bloc camp or place Harper in even a better light as the preferred federalist. Kind of dysfunctional thinking on their part, but reflects most of their campaign thus far, therefore it’s consistent if nothing else.

  39. marc…We all know the Liebrano$ goose is cooked.
I would liken the drunk animals to the euphoric conservatives here. The victory party has begun but the farmer will be showing up in 4 years.

  40. arthurdeco – Check the article in the G&M today (is it the G&M? I think so). It states a Lieberal claim and the CPC response on most of the ads. You can see there that nearly all of the “quotes” the Lieberals use are not verbatim quotes and have been doctored. In other words: LIES. Even the ones that are true quotes are taken out of context (of course) and do not mean what the ad intends them to mean.
The ads are sick and really speak only to the desperation of the PMPMs campaign team.

  41. An ad I would like to see:
    My name is Paul Martin.
    I approved these ads.
    Here.
    In Canada.
    Oh no, I mean I didn’t . . .
(gets thrown in very deep chasm like in Monty Python and the Holy Grail)

  42. Ron
I am honored by your flack. As “backhoe” made abundantly clear we are on “target” and will politically “Fire for Effect” on the 23/Jan.

  43. probably okd news by now but mario dumont is endorsing the CPC. good news as charest is also leaning in that direction. me thinks duceppe is finally in a race as it looks like he might loose his coveted 50+1.

  44. I was just on Bourque, checking the latest, when I clicked on a news item (http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Politics/CanadaVotes/2006/01/12/1390969-cp.html) that prompted a survey by Canoe network… You answer a series of questions, after which it tells you who you should vote for. After 23 years of Conservative voting, I have just discovered that the whole time I’ve been voting Conservative, I should have been voting Bloc…
Canoe says I should be voting Bloc
    Me an Albertan
    Voting Bloc
    after 23 years tory blue
    I’m not making this up…
Well… I do like Gilles too… he’s just in the wrong party. Wait a minute, I’m in the wrong party.

  45. Glen…It’s not really flack as we are both more or less hoping for the same result. It’s more like I’m practicing and learning so I can realize my dream of being a Liberal pundit by 2010. How am I doing so far?
