More profits from the income trust leak

Check out the original post at MK Braaten, and the expanded version at Angry in the Great White North, to see how someone knew to buy two hundred thousand shares of the income trust Medisys just prior to Finance Minister Ralph Goodale’s announcement not to tax income trusts.
Medisys? Sound familiar? It should. It’s the medical services provider owned and run by Prime Minister Paul Martin’s personal physician Dr Sheldon Elman.

  1. Liberals will try and have us believe this is just a coincidence. They do take us voters as fools don’t they.

  2. Liberals will try and have us believe this was just a coincidence. They do take us voters as fools.

  3. This is incredulous…!!
My husband …a former banker will be emailing the OSC to check on this…
    This smells to high heaven.
Ralph Goodale …what have you to say about this?

  4. Paul Hunter on CBC’s The National last night made extra sure that watchers understood that there was “no concrete evidence” of any wrong doing. I’m sure he repeated this line 4 times during his story about the CARP leak.
Yet, when all evidence (whether concrete or not) is pointing to wrong doing by both Goodale’s office and now possibly the PMO and PMPM himself, a massive investigation should be undertaken immediately by the RCMP and the OSC.
This story should have been the top headline of the night, yet they didn’t run it until about the 20 minute mark of the program.

  5. I would laugh if it was PMPM, his wife or son’s who bought the 200,000 shares. People involved in the leak, as well as those who profited form trading must be prosecuted and sent to jail.

  6. The OSC is really loosing any last bit of credibility it has by not acting on this info. I honestly believe that Canada has institutionalized illegal behavior. I cannot even remember the last time I had any faith in any government organization.
    Sad and pathetic

  7. imagine what the world press would be saying (and how loud) if this had been a Rebublican US politian – the trial would have been held and the jury convicted before your Monday morning coffee.

  8. To change the subject a bit, Ralph “Somebody Duct-Tape Me!” Klein has waded in with comments regarding the Liberals’ proposed handgun ban (as I and so many others knew he eventually would):
Alberta will reject proposed handgun ban: Klein
I fear that he’s stepped in it, and Paul Martin’s gonna use this against Harper and the Conservatives.  “Ooooooh, they’re scary!  I told you so!”

  9. “Paul Hunter on CBC’s The National last night made extra sure that watchers understood that there was “no concrete evidence” of any wrong doing. I’m sure he repeated this line 4 times during his story about the CARP leak.”
He and Mansbridge also left the impression that the “investigative” journalists at the CBC are going to sit this one out.

December 9, 2005 – Apropos of nothing, two of my political golden rules containing the word “never.”
    1. Never, ever give up. Keep hitting, and hitting, and hitting, and don’t stop until after someone has told you that you can stop, that you have won. (“Relentless” is praise, not an insult.)
    2. It’s never the break-in, it’s always the cover up. (Follow the money to the end.>>>

  11. CTV won’t roll over on this, even if CBC will. There’s no such thing as coincidence, just collusion.

  12. This new circumstancial evidence certainly seems to further indicate there was funny business going on.
What are the possibilities that the way the CBC described it could have been the truth, and the earlier hints, coupled with the crumbling government on a set date, lead to correct speculation among a group of poeple, and the relatively new phenonmenon of a vastly Internet connected investment world was able to capitalize one group or individual’s published guess?
I think the CBC covered the story as best they could as of last night, especially since no charges have even been laid. To do or say more without concrete evidence would be slanderous. The smoking gun really is missing, we don’t yet have anything that ties Goodale to tipping off certain people, do we?

  13. There must be phone records that can be checked. And why did CARP’s spokesperson recant, only to reiterate his claim again, even going so far as to tell CTV that they said he was confused, etc. It is about ethics, as Erik noted; but the Libs have never been known for being a party that puts much value on ethics. And there have been enough people on Bay Street who feel there was something odd going on. Read Coyne today.

  14. Coyne’s column is good, as is the story in the Ottawa Citizen/National Post about the meeting Goodale held with investment bankers the day of the income trust announcement.
Also on top of this has been Barry Critchley of the Financial Post, who has been going after the OSC and its do-nothing attitude.

  15. It’s a simple line of reasoning- The likeliest reason is the simplest and least complex, that being that someone was tipped off. The odds that a number of investors leapt to the same conclusion all in a short time frame, absent of any outside influence, is highly unlikely, therefore suspect. Yes, it can and does happen, but it is always worth looking into when it does.

  16. Liberals will deny everything like they did in AdScam and it was only after the Gomery enquirey found them guilty did they admit guilt and return over a million dollars that Liberal paty had stolen

  17. The Western Standard has a “do it yourself” kit to investigate income trusts. A step by step method to look up volume/prices of income trusts.
Funny, I looked through a few, and none I found showed the spike that Martin’s Dr’s Co. showed.
So we can rule out some “sector wide” explanation as to why there would be a mysterious jump in volume.
    Nope seems pretty company specific.
Looking worse and worse for the Libs I’d say.

  18. Indeed, the fact that other income trusts showed no similar spike sort of kills the notion that “everybody new about it early.”
The hallmark of insider info is that certain co’s are not reacting like the market generally.

  19. maybe run a petition to have Paul Martin change his name to Martha Martin.
she got it not for insider trading but for lying.
    okay okay Paul lies too.

  20. I am not very skilled at research. However, it looks like many of you are, so I am going to throw something out there: The chairman of the Ontario Securities Commision is a man by the name of William David Wilson (W. David Wilson). He may have made some monetary donations to the Liberal party in the not too distant future. Perhaps even to a well known current cabinet minister… If this were true would this be of interest to anyone?
Coincidently, the OSC appears to be sitting on its hands while this blatant scandal is unfolding right in front of our eyes.

  21. Im sorry, I realized I said “future” when I should have said “past”. Anyways, make that correction, but I stand by everything else.

  22. Name of contributor Year Class Name of political party Donation $
    W. David Wilson 2000 Individual Liberal Party $1,100.00
    W. David Wilson 1996 Individual Liberal Party $1,000.00
W David Wilson 1997 Individual Liberal Party $1,000.00
    W. David Wilson 1998 Individual Liberal Party $1,000.00
    W. David Wilson 2001 Individual Liberal Party $1,000.00
    W. David Wilson 2003 Individual Liberal Party $1,000.00

The Liberals have released TV ads with lovely images of everyday Canadians rattling off reasons why they as average citizens will be voting Liberal.
Taking a closer look at the ads, we invite all Canadians to join us in playing:
    Average Canadian or Liberal Insider?
No. Liberal insider. Bardish Chagger is a constituency office assistant for Ontario Liberal MP Andrew Telegdi.
No. Liberal insider. Peter Yung is riding association president for the Liberal Party in Burnaby-Douglas, B.C.
No. Liberal insider. Neil Dhalla is a brother of Ruby Dhalla, a Liberal MP.
No. Liberal insider. Lamiley Lutterodt is the former business manager for Regina Liberal candidate Simone Clayton in the 2003 Saskatchewan election.
No. Liberal insider. Joel Peterson is the executive director of Saskatchewan’s Liberal party and a key organizer for Finance Minister Ralph Goodale.
    Hey Liberal Party,
After 12 years of scandal and broken promises, there are 30 million reasons why you couldnt find any average Canadians to appear in your ads.
    Whats yours?
(Research for this game taken from an Ottawa Citizen article, Dec. 9, 2005)

  24. The OSC has full power to investigate every trade of any stock on any day. The brokerage firms have to release the names of their clients who participated in the trades if they are asked by the OSC. Something really smells if there is no investigation.

  25. Don’t count on the OSC or the RCMP, Wilson is a Liberal supporter, and Zackcadelli(sp) can’t find the time to climb out of Martin’s back pocket. Welcome to Canukistan!!!
To get ahead in this country you have to BUY your way, and Zackardelli(sp) and Wison will do whatever it takes!

  26. Very interesting Alberta. On a side note, what do you think of his contribution to the Progressive Conservatives in 1993? Interesting that he changed political views so drastically in the 3 years before he started to contributed to the Liberals. An excuse for a change of heart could be that, like many, he was totally dissatisfied with Mulroney, but why wait three years to contribute to the Liberals? And then almost every year at about $1000 a pop? Were his feelings festering for 3 years before he decided to act? By then they had already written off the Red book if I remember correctly.
    Very interesting indeed.

  27. If the OSC fails to investigate, then after Jan 23 we the people shall investigate the OSC. A failure to act when presented with reasonable grounds to suspect insider trading could well be the basis for a successful class action lawsuit against those who failed to execute their fiduciary responsibility.

I saw this story but was not paying completet attention at the time. I thought I heard someone say that Ralph Goodale “supposedly” leaked the info..
I’m accustomed to hearing the word “allegedly” in these situations so it caught my attention.
The use one or the other word says a lot about the speakers opinion of the facts.
I admit, however, that I wasn’t really paying attention and may have just imagined it.
Anybody else catch the same thing ?

  29. You heard right, Gorf. (BTW Kevin Steele over at the Shotgun has posted the transcript of the segment). Hunter used the phrase “supposedly leaked government information”. The word “supposedly” does carry with it the implication that the information is not true. Here are a few other key words in Paul Hunter’s report, in the order they were delivered:
    Rumoured leak
    speculation
    mere rumour
    rumours, especially online
    market rumours webpage
    rumoured
    speculation
    no proof
    story went away
    rumour, speculation, assumption
    no hard evidence
That tells you all you need to know. Unbiased journalism, LPC/GTA-style.

  30. How much evidence will it take to convince the remaining 35% of Canadians that Liberals are crooked? Or do they already know and not care? Why wouldn’t they care? Do they benefit from the Liberal corruption themselves? Talk about vote buying!

  31. A follow up from previous post – I’ve had my morning cup of coffee and no politican has been jailed. Guess that makes it official, nothing but a bunch of liberals and blow hard/do nothing conservitives live in the Great White North. Okay, maybe my coffee WAS a little bitter this morning – as I don’t want to do anything that would upset my favorite beer and fishing!
