A good friend of mine from Montreal recalls hearing a local radio report that day, an interview with a female witness who told the reporter that the gunman was shouting what sounded like “alla akber or something…” Make of that what you will.
Maybe we should call it Muslim immigrant appreciation day.

For any non-Canadians who may stumble across these pages, on 06 December 1989, Marc Lepine walked into L’Ecole Polytechnique, an engineering school in Montr�al, Canada, and shot a number of women, killing fourteen of them. The Violence Against Women industry immediately claimed that Marc Lepine’s actions were typical of male aggression and adopted what is now called the Montr�al Massacre as an annual remembrance of all female victims of male violence.
It’s that time of year again. Every newspaper, every radio station, and every television station in Canada is pumping out the charged rhetoric about how awful Canadian men are and how horribly abused Canadian women are. They show the marches of angry women and the other marches of apologetic-looking men. People hand out white ribbons in commemoration not of the fourteen victims of one man who decided to go on a shooting rampage, but of the horrible day when one man acted out what all men secretly want to do, or so claim the Violence Against Women crowd.

Speaking of ribbons, one day I was walking through the TTC section of Union Station and there, at the height of the morning rush-hour crush, was Jack “Donato draws him wearing a Mao suit” Layton.
Jacko was yelling to the disinterested that he was selling “stop male violence against women” ribbons.
I angled my progress so that I could get near him, and when I did, I looked him square in the face and said “F%$& off, Layton.”
He said something like “well there’s a fine ‘Good Morning!’.”
It certainly made my day.
To be fair, the media did use Lepine’s arab name for about a day following the shootings.
But portraying him as a white Judeo-Christian male just made the crisis soooo much easier to handle…well…..ok…..to manipulate. It allowed everyone to circumvent difficult questions as well as the unpleasant possibilities those questions would have raised.
One of those questions is this; did he blow away women, per se, or just infidels? Perhaps it was both; perhaps his intended targets were female infidels, tout court!
Circumcism comments (female at least) would be better on “the mama dont let your girls grow up to be slave girls”, if your going to re-enact other cultures why stop at the costume.??

So, my question is, how many times do the citizens of Canada have to bullied, cheated, or threatened until they declare war on the villans.
The victims deserve a _national_ memorial, one in Montreal will do.
Last year some places like Canadian Tire were flying their flags at half staff today, which is utterly absurd. Those women didn’t give their lives in the service of their country, nor were they heads of state. We cheapen time honoured traditions when we abuse them in this way, especially 20 years after the incident.
Does the state of California lower their flags every summer to memorialize Sharon Tate and friends? Of course not.
My real question is: would that day have turned out any differently had a couple of male students refused to leave the classroom at ML’s command? I can imagine a time (100 years ago) when a gentleman would have refused to leave those women to their fate, as a point of honor. They would have really deserved a memorial…

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights understands the concern in Muslim countries over the 12 cartoons of the prophet Muhammad and expects UN experts on racism to deal with the matter. At the same time as Islamic countries in a meeting in Mecca are going to discuss joint action against Denmark, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour has involved herself in the discussion.
The leader of the UN�s work on human rights is saying in plain words that she is concerned over the drawings that Jyllands-Posten printed in September, expressing �apologies� for statements and actions demonstrating a lack of respect for the religion of other people. In a letter to the 56 member countries of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), she states: �I understand your concerns and would like to emphasize that I regret any statement or act that could express a lack of respect for the religion of others�. In a complaint to the High Commissioner, the 56 Islamic governments have asked Louise Arbour to raise the matter with the Danish government �to help contain this encroachment on Islam, so the situation won�t get out of control.� Two UN experts, on religous freedom and on racism and xenophobia, are said to be working on the case.
