Exclusive: US forces and forensic experts are examining the bodies of eight high-ranking al Qaeda leaders in Mosul to find out if their chief Abu Musab al- Zarqawi is among them.
November 20, 2005, 8:28 PM (GMT+02:00) A sample of his DNA is in American possession for a match-up. The bodies they are trying to identify are of 7 men and one woman, who blew themselves up Sunday, Nov. 20, after their hideout in northern Iraq was laid to siege by a large US force, backed by tanks and helicopters. The bodies are burned black and unrecognizable. Four Iraqi security officers were killed and 10 injured in the operation.
DEBKAfile’s military sources add that also Sunday, US and Iraqi forces raided al Qaeda sanctuaries in Baghdad and captured several suspects. They followed an intelligence tip which confirmed DEBKA-Net-Weekly’s disclosure (Issue 227 Oct. 28) of the arrival of Zarqawi and his top team to Baghdad on Oct. 15.

OT, yesterday I picked up a copy of Canadians in the Civil War by Claire Hoy. What a fascinating book!
Only about two chapters in, but Hoy asserts that John A Macdonald was deeply influenced by the civil war to the extent that he was determined to establish federalism instead of repulicanism in 1867 because of what he saw in the US. Makes perfect sense. What I did learn, but did not know, was the extent of Southern sympathy here in Canada. Jefferson Davis was welcomed with open arms in TO. And there is so much more…..later all.

Debka is the source of this news, LOL! Excuse me if I take this information with 10 lbs bag of salt. After all this is the same news agency that started the rumour that Saddam shipped his WMD outof Iraq an into Syria too (and people still buy that one too). Well with Al-Zarqawi, the US has been spinning out stories about how they were hot on his trail, giving him six weeks till capture. New Documents Reveal Saddam Hid WMDs, Was Tied to Al Qaida
Recently discovered Iraqi documents now being translated by U.S. intelligence analysts indicate that Saddam Hussein’s government made extensive plans to hide Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction before the U.S. invasion in March 2003 – and had deep ties to al Qaida before the 9/11 attacks.
The explosive evidence was discovered among “millions of pages of documents” unearthed by the Iraq Survey Group weapons search team, reports the Weekly Standard’s Stephen Hayes.
In the magazine’s Nov. 21 issue, Hayes reveals that the document cache now being examined contains “a thick stew of reports and findings from a variety of [Iraqi] intelligence agencies and military units.”
Though the Pentagon has so far declined to make the bombshell papers public, Hayes managed to obtain a list of titles on the reports.

The only problem with the death of Al-Zarqawi is this, it will not at the end of the day change the price of bread in the streets of Iraq. It is a sybolic victory and nothing more. This is the nature of insurganacies/terrorist orgs. They are designed to operate with the loss of the leader. The same thing was said when Saddam’s sons got greased, when Saddam got caught. It didn’t spell the end of the actually trouble (ie, people blowing up people)

I’m more optimistic than you when it comes to what happens to a terrorist organization after it’s “head is cut off”. If the Iraqi insurgency loses it’s leader, his replacement will in all probability take a different direction in it’s operation. Your assumption is that there are no moderates in these organizations and that everyone is as extreme as the other in their beliefs. My assumption is that the most radical of the group have risen to the top with moderates behind them (like the PLO). Get enough of those radicals and eventually someone like Abbas will exert influence and take the insurgency in a more political and less violent direction.

Having read that the WH is now saying that he might not be dead, I went around to look for more news on the subject. I found the SSDD, another 50 people killed today, more US military deaths. Ya, I’m sure that another school was fix and re-opened and some marine resuced a kitty-cat from a tree today in Iraq. But in the end analysis, it is the death and destruction that people see, talk about and complain about. Wish the world to be different will not make it so.

Your argument about al-Qaeda “not exactly known for housing any sort of moderates” holds very well for the PLO too. Arafat and his extremist bunch in the Fatah arm ran the PLO for decades supporting a policy of violence that resulted in thousands of deaths. To the Israelis Arafat’s PLO represented pretty much the same thing al-Qaeda represents to western countries now: an extreme group that uses violence to address it’s hatred of us. Any meaningful change wasn’t possible in the PLO until Arafat died. His replacement, surprise, was a moderate.
I’m not saying that the insurgency in Iraq will go away all of a sudden with al-Zarqawi’s death, but like Arafat his death is necessary to give moderation of the insurgency a chance.
I think the PLO became less effective when Arafat took more interest in his guards and pilfering money than the cause.

I think we both agree and are the same page when I say, Iraq has a very long and painful road ahead of it. What is up for debate is whether and the road can be smoothed out and maybe shortened. Current US policies really are not helping (my opinion).

Another part of the debate is whether a democracy in Iraq is a treatment for the cause. My belief is that a democracy will give rise to a large middle class and fairly distribute Iraq’s wealth which will eliminate the cause (the “American Dream” transplanted).
