The SFDS, officially known as Infight*, is a clean, safe environment where the illegal handgun users can discharge their weapons under the supervision of fully accredited firearms instructors. National Firearms Association representatives will provide on-site access to small-bore rifles, high-power rifles, pistols, and revolvers. Infight also provides nurses and counselors to tend to first aid and wound care.
To operate legally, the Department Of Justice has granted SFDS an exemption from Bill C-68, otherwise known as the Canadian Firearms Act.
The Department, in association with Citizenship and Immigration Canada has committed funds of up to $2 million to fund the program costs of Infight until April 2006, as well as $1.2 million to renovate a former convenience store into a Canada Standards Council approved firing range. (A proposal for funding for ammunition for underprivilaged gun users is presently under Cabinet review.)
Infight has been established in partnership with the City of Toronto, the Toronto Police Service, and the Lawrence Park Community Services Society.
The Canadian Firearms Center is conducting the scientific research project, with the goal of assessing whether a discharge site will reduce the harm associated with firearms to individuals and the community.
Over the course of the next three years, researchers will examine if it reduces gang-related executions, drive-by shootings, improves the health of illegal handgun owners, increases their appropriate use of health and social services, and reduces the health, social, legal and incarceration costs associated with illegal firearms discharges.
Good news.
Maybe I’m missing something. What does the health of an illegal handgun owner have to do with this? If this is a place where ‘illegal’ handgun owners can go, presumably with their own handguns, and shoot in safety that does, what tell you about the gun law? And I suppose the researchers will have the interests of individual gun owners at heart. This whole idea stinks. More social control by a socialist government.
On the surface of it, and I may not have all the facts, even if you can go and shoot a handgun owned by this organization, it still shows that you are interested in handguns. You name will go on a list for sure.

Illegal gun owners are generally either criminals or people who believe in freedom. Since people who believe in freedom are by definition, smart, subsequently people who don’t value freedom are by definition stupid. I don’t even see an argument on that point. It’s obvious what life is like in non free countries.

I think it’s a brilliant plan. The gov’t trains the crooks in shooting skills, fewer bystanders get killed once their aim improves, and with any luck, the gangs will eliminate themselves, leaving the innocent, law-abiding citizens in peace.
One small problem: when the gangbangers aren’t shooting each other up, they are not exactly doing ‘model citizen’ things. We are never informed if they have-or have ever had- a regular job. We are not entitled to know if they happen to live in our neighbourhoods, and if they are ‘young offenders’ we are not even allowed to know who they are. (They have privacy rights, yaknow).
So- who benefits by them being here in the first place: 1. Legal Aid pays Lawyers to defend them. 2. The Police budget continues to increase, ( even though ‘violent crime stats are down’. 3. Increased Social Services to cater to them.
I’m with Candace–teach these morons how to hit what they’re shooting at. Maybe even inspire them to get a little better piece that won’t be as prone to jam or miss.

BoDiddly – Cops up here have there hands tied, these guys spend maybe 2 hours max and there out on the street. Candace’s idea is a good one. We just need a kill free zone to go with it so normal citizens don’t try to catch the flying lead.
Yea it took me a while too, but only because it is the type of twaddle these idiots would put in place to combat such a travesty. I mean they understand that harsher penalties for such things as “hate” crimes work as a deterent, I presume. But the shooting of fellow citizens is a “social” problem.
Here’s a thing I aint seen taken into account. Last week was Caribana thingee here in Dodge, which may also be the biggest weekend for gun importation. You see all these urban folk are streaming across the border, women with children, older ladies and gentlemen and the assorted nefarious characters. Who can blame them for funding the trip with a couple of more liquid assets. The border patrol will turn a jaundiced eye for fear of racial profiling, and anyways its bad for the carriage trade, wot.

The city�s summer under the gun has claimed two more victims, and left police dealing with three more shootings.
Three men were hit by bullets downtown within minutes of each other. At least one of the incidents is believed to have started near the Phoenix Nightclub at Wellesley and Sherbourne Sts. just before 4am.
When emergency crews arrived at Jarvis and Bloor, they found two distraught friends of one victim, desperately trying to get him to hospital. They were forced to flag down an officer for directions as the man lay bleeding.
Just blocks away and not long after, sirens were heard at Jarvis and Maitland, where two more shooting victims were located. Both were pronounced dead in hospital.
And authorities now wonder if there are even more wounded victims they haven�t found yet.
