Reader Tips

Some readers — well, one — thought Nancy Sinatra got short shrift last night, and he has a point: her lovely harmony part was overshadowed by Frank’s voice. In tonight’s springtime amusement en route to the tips she’s on her own, front and center, as she sings Lee Hazlewood’s carefree pop confection Sugar Town.
The comments are open, as always, for your Reader Tips.

  1. Cultural War update: “Prominent Catholics call on pope to oust S.F. archbishop”
    http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/matier-ross/article/Prominent-Catholics-call-on-pope-to-oust-S-F-6202539.php
100 phony Catholics may have signed their death warrant.
The Archdiocese of San Francisco responded quickly to the ad.
“The advertisement is a misrepresentation of Catholic teaching, a misrepresentation of the nature of the teacher contract, and a misrepresentation of the spirit of the Archbishop. The greatest misrepresentation of all is that the signers presume to speak for ‘the Catholic Community of San Francisco.’ They do not.”
And Michael Savage defended the Church from the liberal pogrom with some of the harshest criticism of the bullying I’ve heard in years.

We live in interesting times. Very. Interesting.

  2. Sad Rabid Puppies deliver crushing defeat to libleft homofascist collectivist hivemind.

Larry’s contention was that the Hugo nomination and voting process was hopelessly politicized, so that only politically correct authors would ever be nominated. The science fiction community reacted in shock at the accusation, denied the possibility outright–and then proceeded to validate it by voting many of the Sad Puppy nominations dead last out of sheer spite–especially celebrating that Vox Day’s “Opera Vita Eternae” came in sixth place in a field of five.

  3. Anybody watching? Sometime in the next few hours, the blogroll meter is going to be hitting 40 million! Wow.

  4. This explains a lot.
Scientists claim climate change has already made an impact on music — here’s how

Climate change is predicted to intrude into almost every area of life — from where we live, to what we eat and whom we war with.

Now music can be added to the list.

That’s the unusual idea put forward by British researchers Tuesday, who say the weather has powerfully but discreetly influenced the soundtrack to our lives.

And tastes in songs are likely to change as the climate shifts.

Fancy listening to the Beatles’ “Here Comes The Sun” when you are grinding out yet another long, sweaty heatwave?

“These assumptions we have about certain weather being good and certain weather being bad, like sun being good — that might change,” researcher Karen Aplin of the University of Oxford told AFP at a European Geosciences Union meeting in Vienna.

  5. RE: Sugar Town video by Nancy Sinatra.
I was 17 years old when this song was released. There was a lot of talk that the song was about LSD, as dopers back then placed a drop of ”acid’, on an ordinary sugar cube and ingested it.
If you look at the description of the video, it says that Lee Hazlewood was know to have said: “Sugar Town was an LSD song if there ever was one.” Did he really say that?? Who knows.
Nancy Sinatra had a body and looks to kill for, not to mention that she had talent. Add to that Frank Sinatra’s popularity, and she could have raised ”Old Macdonald Had A Farm” to No. 1 on the charts that year.
I believe that (beside Nancy Sinatra’s talent and looks) the single number one feature that sold a lot of music in the mid to late 1960’s was Stereo sound. Hi-Fi was passé, cars were being equipped with front and rear stereo speakers. Living rooms were filled with the reverberation of Zenith and RCA console units. You had to be there!! Listen to this Zenith advertisement! Works best if you have stereo speakers or headphones.

  6. RE: Jian Ghomeshi is in the headlines–once again. And while CBC.Ca did carry the story, they must have had extra staff deleting comments. (As if the story is going to disappear.) The story highlights CBC’s management and how they ignored complaints about Ghomeshi’s aggressive behaviour towards fellow employees. The most outrageous reader comments are from those who blame ”CBC cutbacks” for this tragedy.
    http://www.cbc.ca/news/cbc-inquiry-concludes-management-mishandled-jian-ghomeshi-1.3035574
For example, one comment by ”ChillyDippers” said: ”The kind of ‘slack’ Ghomeshi got for his behavior is common in every work place for the ‘rock star’ employees. It is in no way isolated to the CBC although every comment troll will undoubtedly try to insinuate it is.”
My comment was: ”Like every comment troll will try to blame everything and everyone else (including Harper) besides Ghomeshi and the CBC.”
Needless to say, my comment was deleted. however ”ChillyDippers” was allowed to stay.
(Among dozens of other comments that I’ve recently had deleted by CBC.Ca on this and other similar topics.)
One thing is positive however. Justin Trudeau is not commenting, nor is he looking for photo-ops with Jian.

  7. Now, if Webber was paying attention, a lawsuit or HRC complaint should follow with precedent ink not dry.

  8. Just a suggestion for our federal government.
If Chretien was able to justify the disbanding of our Airborne Regiment over the actions of a few rogue soldiers, Harper can use the same justification for shutting down the CBC.
    Cultural sensitivities be damned.
    Would make a great juxtaposition.

  11. Calling Mark Steyn! Calling Anthony Watts!
Michael Mann crawls out of the wood work to pen a letter to The Telegram (St. John’s NL, of all places, dissing Andy Wells… The telegram is a rabid left wing propaganda news service.
Come on SDA let’s get some results!
“For example, Wells’ claim that “there has been no temperature rise for at least the past 17-18 years” is so shopworn a myth that it ranks among the top 10 debunked denier talking points (see the response to this myth by the scientist-run website Skeptical Science).”
“Nearly every one of Wells’ assertions is a distortion, half-truth or plain untruth. Most egregious of all, perhaps, are his false statements about the “hockey stick” reconstruction — work of my own published more than a decade ago showing that recent warming is unusual over at least the past 1,000 years.”

So, if someone asked JT about his reply to a Victoria high school group about a merger with the NDP a couple of years back where he said that consider it if that what it would take to defeat PM Harper, would that be an interesting question to be avoided ?
BTW, ‘hypothetical’ is an adjective and is used improperly by JT.
