Alberta is voting on May 5. After destroying Wildrose, Premier Prentice goes for his mandate. Rand Paul is in.

28 days of pundits, polls, hubris, frivolity. aint spring grand?
I’m still going to vote for Wildrose. Or, if there isn’t a Wildrose candidate in my riding, anything but PC. (except lib or dipper of course)
I too will be voting Wild Rose. I know Prentiss will get back in and this province will continue its slide from one of the best provinces to something less so.
There is no way I can support the budget brought forth.
I will be voting for the PC candidate – despite seeing him as a total non entity who has never done anything for anyone other than himself, couldn’t run a pop stand without supervision, and has no idea what being an MLA entails, despite about 8 years in office.
So why?
1 – because the wildrose party has been taken over by its most extreme members and deserves to die out.
2 – because the NDP is going to win this riding (West Lethbridge) anyway; and,
3 – because there is no sane opposition party to vote for the PCs represent the lessor of multiple evils.
“wildrose party has been taken over by its most extreme members”
Extreme members? Like the leader who fired a candidate because he called brown people brown. Sounds like extremely liberal.
Please change the post, Wild Rose is far from destroyed. WR is stronger than before the Prentice attempt to destroy democracy.
“I will be voting for the PC candidate – despite seeing him as a total non entity who has never done anything for anyone other than himself, couldn’t run a pop stand without supervision, and has no idea what being an MLA entails, despite about 8 years in office.”
Pathetic.
I’ve got to admire J.P.’s political savvy; he will likely be the next leader of the CPC.
One point of interest though, I recall the rational for the Wildrose Cabinet cross-over was that the PCs, for the most part, had adopted most of the same platform as the Wildrose; therefore, there was no longer a need for the Wildrose Party. Now that the opposition is “defeted”; I see the PCs are raising taxes. Was this part of the Wildrose platform? Can anyone say ‘hoodwinked’?
I’ve got to admit though, this has been some of the most facinating politics I’ve seen in some time.
No comment on the budget; living in AZ
What happened to set election dates? Prentice reminds me of Sask. NDP, no new ideas just raise taxes and keep spending. The scum bags need to be skidded
Lord in Heaven I hope the NDP don’t win Lethbridge West. I know the riding is dominated by the U of L and its cabal of underworked, overpaid, “thinkers.” It is also the fastest growing part of the city with many young families that can hopefully see through the tired rhetoric of the NDP. A lot of nurses and teachers live on that side of town too so it could be possible.
I will be voting Wildrose. Even though I like Jim Prentice, I am sick and tired of the continual flinging of spaghetti at the wall to see what will stick method of governing.
As for your current MLA, Greg is a decent enough fellow but, let’s face it, for many elections, a 2×4 could have been run as a PC candidate in Southern Alberta and still won.
As for over here in Lethbridge East, we just lost Bridget Pastoor (former Liberal floor crosser to PC.) I don’t even know who the current PC candidate is. I won’t be putting my X next to his or her name anyways
I think that the one who has done more to promote Wild Rose than anyone else is Jim Prentice. The Wild Rose delegates didn’t have it in them to dump Danielle after she stunk the province out by losing 4 out of 4 byelections and this coming on the heels of losing an election that was gift wrapped and special delivered by Alison Redfraud. Putting it bluntly its time to dump the PCs.
Alberta is in the same position as B.C., with a government we don’t like but the alternative is worse.Prentice will win with a comfortable majority. Prentice is using Jean Chretien’s method, strike while the Opposition is in disarray, worked for JC, will work for JP.
Good to see Rand Paul announce his candidacy, hope the Republicans don’t completely destroy each other in their zeal to be the Presidential candidate, as they did last time.
A new leader happened to fixed election dates.
When any ruling party elects a new leader, they have to ratify their choice by seeking approval from the voting public.
Once the election is done, a fixed election date can then resume.
It’s really not that complicated.
It will be tough here in airdrie as our mayor is running he has earned a great social name but a disastrous fiscal legacy. Although I think airdronians are so pissed at the pc’s you could probly run a fence post for wild rose and win.
I found it amazing that airdrie was denied 24hr health facility , until , the mayor made his announcement to run for the pc party and with in weeks voi la airdrie gets 24/hr healthcare and the locals put the mayors face all over the news. Lol
I seriously hope that the wild rose wins a FRIKEN majority.
Albertans vote like a bunch of 6 year boys standing on dock beside a cold lake at summer camp. They shiver, giggle and make threats to go, but only a few brave ones ever jump in.
We totally deserve the government we got and bills we have to pay. Prentice probably doesn’t even know where to start with the crew he inherited, that is why the first thing he did was bring in some of his own people. The budget sucks because all the previous commitments suck. Once elected, I think Prentice is really going to clean house and if the guys that are elected don’t perform, it will be their last run in politics.
CBC has its Vote Compass up for Alberta already. http://www.cbc.ca/news2/interactives/votecompass/alberta2015.html
After completing it, it shows where the parties fall on the political spectrum. Even the CBC has the PCs more progressive than conservative on the social axis. Maybe someday they’ll get around to telling their viewers this.
Oh goody, even more electioneering in 2015!
Be still my heart…
If Prentice truly believes that his budget is going to begin to repair the damage the two other PC Premiers inflicted then he should have the brass ones to standby his budget for the next year to see what kind of results that budget begins to show.
He hasn’t got the spine to believe in his own budget because he knows full well it is all smoke and mirrors.
It doesn’t help that he displays the same facial expressions, mannerisms and political knowhow that Joe Who so successfully used to bury his own political career. Jim is really a Joe Who wannbe.
Yeah whoppie. There hasn’t been a conservative in AB since it became a province.
Just listened to Prentice being interviewed by Dave Taylor (former lib MLA turned radio host) on QR77 Calgary. Taylor wiped the floor with him. Prentice couldn’t properly articulate why he called an early election, he called anyone who doesn’t vote PC an extremist. He came off sounding weak. This interview will make the rounds. He’s had a bad first day.
On the topic of bad optics. Brian Jean (or a company he owns) the leader of the WR donated 10k to the ‘Prentice for PC leader’ campaign last summer. I know they are buddies from their days in the federal CPC but you have to admit this doesn’t look good.
Strange things happen in politics and the ball of string that is the PC party here in AB may be starting to unwind. One can only hope.
Tax increases and no spending reduction. That’s the winning formula. With a majority his next budget will include a pst. Just like with Stelmach the beneficiary will be Saskatchewan.
Jim and Brian Jean are both idiots. I listened to Brian Jean phone town hall and I think he sounds just as bad as the pro gay groups who attacked a pizzeria in Indiana. Either you accept homosexuality and man made climate warming disruption change , evolution, and progressivism as FACT or you are a right wing extremist.
That’s why I’m a right wing extremist. It’s quicker and easier than listing all those things I know are wrong.
I’m going Wild Rose again.
I am sorely disappointed in Smith and the other(double)crossers, but Prentice strikes me as personally abhorrent. There is something about the man that seems forced and creepy. The Libs and the NDP are non-starters.
I don’t see the Wild Rose coming close, but who knows. The AB. Gov’t needs a shake-up,perhaps an inexperienced WR crew is the answer.
We could send olde wynnemill out to comfort you poor dears in yourtime of trouble. T’is funny as hell watching this joke unravel, brings back memories of all the bullshit you newfburtans used to like slinging at others:-)))
This is a retro moment from the old WCC party the “progressives” also destroyed from with in
to paraphrase Jack Nicholson (aka The Joker) “This province needs an enema!”
The political system there sucks almost as bad as Ontario, but not quite, but give them time.
Presto went to Ottawa, look who is der leader now.
Alberta needs a shake-up. Too damned complacent the voter is.
Aside, the fed Libs in trouble trotting out P.Martin to ramble on about a budget not delivered til April 21.
SCREW The PC’s.
40 years and we’re still broke with a pretty decent sized debt and deficit.
Not impressed. Stelmach – Red FRAUD and now Prentice who believes it’s OUR Fault…?? Really.?
Health care premiums
Income tax hikes
Sin tax hikes
Gasoline tax hike
YET not a GODDAMNED thing happens to his beloved PUBLIC SERVICE – the MAIN Reason we are in the hole..
WHY.??
And not a nickel more from the Oil companies in this PROVINCE either…??
WHY.??
Yea I am talking Oil companies. NO ONE here can tell me they are hurting that bad that a 1-2% increase in Royalties is going to make them all pull up and move out…Aint freaking happening. Seems to me they are the least taxed oil companies on the planet.
So in the end, it is those of us that work for a wage (if we are lucky), or are single person contractors that literally get boned up the (_i_)…while the Public service gets off completely free with ever increasing wages. The Oil company’s while cutting costs (Major Layoffs and wage rollbacks of 10-15%), still make out like bandits at $51.00/bbl USD. Most have lift costs of less than 20…I know cause I work for one of them.
I will vote WILD ROSE and to HELL with the so called PC’s.
Nothing but organized THEFT – that is what politicians do – that is what the banks do – that is what corporations do.
Sick of it all.
Stk
Voting Wildrose again.
Prentice over-promised and under-delivered. His budget might as well be a Redford budget.
Had an automated poll call a bit earlier tonight.
Vote Wild Rose.
Sounds like you should be voting NDP.
Evil oil companies. Make the rich pay.
Let Big Brother take care of Big Oil. who will then download the increased taxes to the middle class wage earner.
Right there with ya on most of this, but you must realize that increasing corporate taxes is a shell game. Companies don’t pay ANY taxes. They just collect taxes from their customers. If you raise taxes on oil (or oil royalties) all you’re really doing is increasing the price at the pumps.
