Things You’ll Never See On The CBC

Sun News;

A poll of 1,996 Canadians by Abacus Data found that 45% of those surveyed support or strongly support selling CBC compared to 34% who opposed the move, while 21% were undecided.

  1. It should be obvious to all Canadians that CTV, Global and now SUN TV cannot replace the breath and quality of CBC. If you cannot grasp the role the CBC plays in Canada then you cannot be a very good Canadian. No?
Just finishing Lloyd Robertson’s bio. + 50 years a news anchor at CBC and CTV and his remarks about PMSH were revealing. On the one hand he says it is accepted within the Canadian media that PMSH is the brightest PM since PE Turdeau but then he comments on the high professional integrity of his industry. If PMSH is the smartest PM in the last 40 years I have never heard that mentioned on the nightly news.
My ongoing complaint about the Harper government is the poor job they are doing in media relations and using the media to educate Canadians about fundamental economics. If they fear bringing the CBC to heal or even selling it then grow some gonads and go on the offensive. Give the year conversation with the PM to SUN TV! This failure could cost them the next election. Conservative supporters I know are inundated with requests for money but rarely get talked to or consulted by those who are running the party.

  2. So is PMSH and his caucus in the 21% undecided or 34% opposed? Is anyone else disappointed that almost 25% of Canadians don’t have an opinion or can’t make up their minds?

  3. Well said, and I agree with all of it. In particular, as you say, the Harper government media relations and their lack of a media offensive.
Lloyd is wrong about the professional integrity of his profession. By and large they are shills for the Liberals or worse, the NDP.
The Harper government is also quite remiss in cleaning up the firearms laws and in reining in the CFOs, as well as some other issues.

  4. Steve said: “Is anyone else disappointed that almost 25% of Canadians don’t have an opinion or can’t make up their minds?”
That would be the 21% of Canadians who have never heard of the CBC, or have no minds to make up.
One of the major problems of a free democracy is that people are free to be stupid and/or ignorant. The problem is that they vote on an equal basis with the intelligent and informed.
So really, rather than being disappointed I’m happy that the number isn’t higher than 21%. It means most people have made up their minds, and the weight of decision is on ending the CBC.
Two years of the CBC budget would buy an aircraft carrier, or better yet cut my taxes by a few hundred bucks.

  5. If they place an actual value on the entire CBC, I could probably collect enough beer bottles in a day to buy it..

  6. Remember when we got rid of the CWB and all the farmers died?
Or when we ditched the gun registry and the duck hunters all went on killing sprees?
    Yeah, me neither.
But that won’t stop the CBC supporters from pailing the same bilgewater at us.

  7. Hiya Phantom…maybe that 21% is immigrants within our major urban centers who do not speak English….and have no intent to learn either.

  8. Does the average Canadian who tunes into the CBC to watch hockey realize that over $1 billion per year of taxpayers’ money is pumped into this parasite and that it would quickly wither and die without this obscene injection? Probably not. Is this same average Canadian aware that the CBC is mismanaged, accountable to no one, obviously biased in its reporting and basically quite uninteresting to most viewers? Again, probably not.
However, even the most obtuse viewer can probably come up with a dozen or more areas where $1 billion per annum could be far better spent.
In order to remove the CBC tumor, the government has to do a far better job at educating Canadians about just exactly what the CBC costs and how utterly useless and irrelevant it really is. If the facts are put out there for Canadians to see, support for axing this dinosaur would be overwhelming.

  9. You can bet CBC brass are very aware of that poll and are getting
a little worried that the great unwashed masses have an opinion
that could spell the end of their cushy positions. What makes me
say that is last night I watched part of the National on CBC and
Peter Mansbridge was interviewing the man child on his Senate
move and Peter actually asked Justine a few hard questions. I
could hardly believe what I saw.

  10. The big difference being farmers actually produce something of great value. The CBC produces nothing of value.
We can live without the CBC….can’t live without farmers.

  11. If one were to calculate the total gross Canadian agricultural output in dollars (physical, tangible commodity output only) and divide it by the number of farmers, it’d be tough to find a more productive group on the planet. While there’s plenty of deregulation to be done yet (i.e. marketing boards), agricultural subsidies are a comparative pittance. And then there’s the issue of strategic food security. Even if the entire agricultural sector WAS operating at a net loss, which it’s assuredly NOT, there’s a strong argument to be made for ensuring a country can feed it’s own population. And the best way to do that, evident after a century of failed government attempts to do otherwise, is through private enterprise.
But none of that matters to people like Phil. I would just delete all his comments and be done with it. But I’m a tyrant.

  12. There is something about a tax paying National broadcasting Organization that attracts raving communists, radicals, terrorists. From The Australian Broadcasting corporation to the BBC. Certainly the CBC. They become the enemies of tier own nations, while pretending to be Global citizens. Every story becomes socialists. Every comment a run down on any decency. When you break open these Government supported Media hacks. It reveals a monstrous play pen for sex predators, Moaists, lunatic Socialists. All vying to ruin conservatives, while preserving Marxists myth.
Every Nation that has one wants to see it taken down. These silly people actually think living off others money makes them world experts. Not Teleprompter junkies.
I can’t think of one Country that loves an official Government paid channel.
People are fed up with these loons that now run them

  13. Further to your comment, the CBC has actually opened a few political stories to unmoderated comments.
This rarely happens. The usual CBC crowd are scratching their noodles wondering where all these other opinions are coming from.
They have decided that it is a Conservative plot funded with tax dollars.
    Ironic, isn’t it?

  14. To me, this pole gives a good chance that over 50% of voters want the CBC leech dead.
Consider the fact, conservatives generally do no do polls.
I don’t, the other working stiffs I know don’t,”I’m busy” being the most polite answer.
    Click, being the suppertime response.
CBC will still claim 100% taxpayer support, even if we have a landslide referendum vote in favour of scrapping them.

  15. Here’s a statement from the Editor’s Blog….
Something amazing has been happening in the CBC News commenting community over the last 6 months. The number of people commenting and the number of comments being posted has been growing exponentially. More and more Canadians are choosing CBCNews.ca as their destination to discuss the news that affects them on a daily basis. This is incredible engagement with audiences. In fact, in the last six months, the volume of comments has doubled. CBC News reporting and story-telling is increasingly becoming the starting point for national conversation.
With this good news, comes a challenge. The financial cost of moderating our comments increases as the volume of comments goes up. It’s a good challenge to have, but something we can’t ignore. That’s why we’ve been experimenting with strategies for managing the number of comments moderated on discussion threads on CBCNews.ca stories.
You may have noticed fewer stories with comments open. We are also only opening comments on any given story for one day. And if a new story is filed on a story that already has open comments, we are closing off the old discussion and starting again on the latest news. We have also been experimenting with reactive moderation on some stories. Reactive moderation means all comments get published but when the community flags a comment they’re looked at by a moderator.
We recognize it’s a work in progress. As a public broadcaster, we must be mindful that we are managing our bottom line responsibly. We also need to manage our legal risk, and we want to ensure our comment boards are a welcoming and respectful space for all Canadians.
As we move forward we will do our best to be transparent and keep you informed about the changes in our commenting community. We are proud to say that CBC News has the largest and most thoughtful commenting community in Canada and we value its members — you — highly. We want CBC News to remain the go-to place for Canadians who want to have a meaningful discussion about the stories and issues that are important to them and make a difference in their lives.
We welcome your feedback on these and any changes we make.

  16. Actually CBC website is restricting comments on articles more than ever. For North news, only insipid ‘human interest’ stories are allowed commenting.
Anything controversial isn’t open to commenting. Our tax dollars hard at work muzzling the public.

  17. Yup, nothing ever changes. My comment was disabled in less than two hours. They’re still commie censors getting fat on my tax dollar.

  18. The link that Tamarax posted is accepting un-moderated comments. If you want to put your opinion to good use, now is the time and opportunity.
