Reports Of Berlusconi’s Defeat May Be Premature

Where have we heard this before?

PRODI WINS the Italian elections, if the first exit polls are confirmed.

It’s a nailbiter, though. Barcepundit is following returns. “According to the latest results, the Casa delle Libert (Berlusconi) has taken the lead over the Unione (Prodi). Amazing.”
An Instapundit reader predicts;

If Berlusconi loses, it will be a referendum on Italy’s involvement in Iraq. If he wins, it will be due to some obscure domestic issues.
Interestingly, when the exit polls had Prodi ahead, it was a lead item on Yahoo news. As the results drew closer, it had dropped off the front page (though now it is back as “too close to call”).

  1. All I’ve seen throughout the day are reporting of exit poll data as it became available. When Prodi appeared ahead in those polls, it was reported. When it became too close to call, and Berlesconi appeared ahead in the Senate, it was reported. Nobody “projected” victory for anybody in the reports I read. I saw headlines on Yahoo and CNN regardless of what the polls showed. Where has there been disinformation?

  2. all through this article by the BBC, it is clear who the favoured party is… “earlier on we were so happy… but now.”

last week I read a few reports of how poorly the campaign was going for Mr.Berlusconi.
today just reading headlines from Google, it sure is a mixed bag of who is hoping for whom.
as always in a coalition type election, we gotta wait a day or two. (or as in the recent German election, a week or two) and further complicating things, there are 3 million voters living abroad that can vote, and almost a 84% turnout! that’s excellent.
Australia Broadcasting Corp is calling it a win for Mr. B.

  3. Hi Marc,
I read the first article and it’s clearly an article about the reaction of Romano Prodi supporters.
As such, it’s fair ball to quote their supporters’ reactions &#8212 in fact, how else could you do it?
Seems to be a decent article. The writer may or may not support Prodi, but it’s certainly not unfair to mention that his supporters do!

  5. It is interesting that only clear Prodi win is headline news, while a tie or a win for Berlusconi has no news value.
    Unbiased media?

  6. Reports Of Berlusconi’s Defeat May Be Premature
    Or not.
    Berlusconi Pulls a Bush?
Or is it a Gore? I wonder how the people who were all over Gore for wanting accurate vote counts feel about Berlusconi doing the same thing. I have no problem with recounts in either case.

  7. I think that as there are 500.000 spoiled ballots, and the margin of victory seems to be 25.000,
a recount should be automatic. Not only in Italy, but in any democracy.
It cannot seem, that “anyone” will win an election by 2 votes, but we had to annul 4 to get the win…
