Our Friday night amusement en route to the Tips is a catchy original song made famous by the young Rolling Stones, who – you may notice – not only copied most of the instrumental arrangement but also closely mimicked the vocal inflections. From a 1963 recording, here are the song’s original performers (and writers) The Valentinos singing It’s All Over Now.

  9. Impossible to have a debate someone who strongly supports the long gun registry — it’s based on emotion.
    They know how they feel about guns and don’t want any facts confusing those feelings.
    No point arguing with a stupid person; they always drag it down to their level and win on experience.

    But when the votes were counted, all five tax-raising Initiatives had been defeated by 60% margins. Even in San Francisco. A sixth Initiative designed by tax opponents to punish legislators who do not balance the budget passed by a more than 70% margin. Even in San Francisco. If one of the most liberal states in the Union is saying no to the soak-the-public philosophy of leftwing legislators, Obama socialism is in big trouble.
    The revolt in California quickly spread to the entire nation through the efforts of the Tea Parties movement, the most innovative, exciting and powerful grassroots force in the history of American conservatism. It is vital to the health of this country that the Tea Parties movement grow. More to the point: it is essential to American survival that the Tea Parties movement succeed. On the eve of the 2008 presidential election, Barack Obama said “We are five days away from fundamentally transforming America.” The Tea Parties movement is the American people saying no to Obama’s plans for revolution.

    “Pat Burns is still alive, despite media reports
    It is a strange circumstance indeed where family members and sports authorities feel it necessary to assert that someone is very much alive. Yet that was the case before noon on Friday, when news of the death of Pat Burns spread like wildfire on Twitter.
    The son of the former award-winning NHL coach was forced to call in to CBC Radio to set the record straight that his father was alive. About half an hour later, TSN’s Bob McKenzie also spoke with Burns himself, who said, “Here we go again. They are trying to kill me before I am dead…I’m not dead, far [expletive] from it. They’ve had me dead since June. Tell them I’m alive. Set them straight.”
    It all started when there were reports of his death on Twitter, citing a tweet by CTV Ottawa. More outlets began to cite a report by TSN and the confusion continued when the Toronto Star spoke to Toronto Maple Leafs executive Cliff Fletcher, who said that a friend called him to say that Burns had died. But Newstalk 1010, along with the CBC reported the son as a source saying his father was still alive. A few minutes later, CTV Ottawa retracted its report.
    Fletcher also issued a written apology statement saying “I extend my deepest apologies to Pat Burns and his family. Unfortunately, I was misinformed by a friend earlier today and my public comments were completely inaccurate.”

    Mao Zedong, founder of the People’s Republic of China, qualifies as the greatest mass murderer in world history, an expert who had unprecedented access to official Communist Party archives said yesterday.
    Speaking at The Independent Woodstock Literary Festival, Frank Dikötter, a Hong Kong-based historian, said he found that during the time that Mao was enforcing the Great Leap Forward in 1958, in an effort to catch up with the economy of the Western world, he was responsible for overseeing “one of the worst catastrophes the world has ever known”.
    Mr Dikötter, who has been studying Chinese rural history from 1958 to 1962, when the nation was facing a famine, compared the systematic torture, brutality, starvation and killing of Chinese peasants to the Second World War in its magnitude. At least 45 million people were worked, starved or beaten to death in China over these four years; the worldwide death toll of the Second World War was 55 million.
    Will the truth set us free?
    Between 1958 and 1962, a war raged between the peasants and the state; it was a period when a third of all homes in China were destroyed to produce fertiliser and when the nation descended into famine and starvation, Mr Dikötter said.
    His book, Mao’s Great Famine; The Story of China’s Most Devastating Catastrophe, reveals that while this is a part of history that has been “quite forgotten” in the official memory of the People’s Republic of China, there was a “staggering degree of violence” that was, remarkably, carefully catalogued in Public Security Bureau reports, which featured among the provincial archives he studied. In them, he found that the members of the rural farming communities were seen by the Party merely as “digits”, or a faceless workforce. For those who committed any acts of disobedience, however minor, the punishments were huge.
    What is truly remarkable about this revelation is that most anti-Communists who had studied Chinese history believed that the real bloodletting occurred during the so-called “Cultural Revolution” which was just another name for a gigantic purge of people with suspect ideology and dedication to Mao’s idea of a socialist state. Some estimates ranged as high as 20 million dead during that period, although more recent estimates placed the number of those executed, tortured, or starved to death around 1 million.
    Note also that it was during a similar period of collectivization that saw the horrendous body count in Stalin’s Russia. Millions of Kulaks died resisting the seizure of their property either through state sponsored murder or deliberate starvation.

In the Ethical Oil thread, Dave @ 10:16 a.m., if you know something about the topics Ezra tackles, usually in the area of human rights in Canada, it’s clear that he doesn’t lie, but does his homework and knows a lot more about most of this stuff than his critics do. That’s why they can’t stand him. He hoists them on their own petard and leaves them dangling in the wind.
    As far as his article on George Sor** goes, it would seem that some of Mr. Levant’s accusations were perhaps ill-advised. There is enough in Mr. Sor**’s present portfolio to put his agenda in a negative light, that Mr. Levant probably needn’t have brought up his past in Nazi-occupied Hungary.
    Don’t you find it ironic, however, that Pope Benedict XVI, in connection with his being forced as a young teenager to join Hitler Youth, was dragged through the mud by the media?
    How come the stunningly bigoted double standard here? I’d like to hear your views on this, Dave.

  25. Sorry, I didn’t mean to be devious in order to post my comment to Dave in the Ethical Oil thread, but I did want to ask the question about the media double standard when it comes to reporting on George So*os and Pope Benedict XVI.
    The reactions of both to similar accusations shines a spotlight on the difference between atheists’/secular humanists’ and Christians’ different approaches to the question of democratic rights and freedoms. The atheist in question is threatening to sue and take his pound or more of flesh, while Benedict hasn’t responded to his accusers and, no doubt, is praying for them.
