A few years ago I was watching some discussion panel where some unfortunate fellow who was being accused of being a racist – and he clearly wasn’t – pointed out, matter-of-factly, that two of his three closest friends were black. His (black) antagonist became animated, like he’d scored an “aha!” moment – he almost jumped out of his seat – and said, to the applause and approving laughter of the audience, that the statement was self-evidently and purely racist, and subsequently managed to successfully characterize the fellow’s simple statement of fact as an example of the meaningless “some of my best friends are black” cliche.
This heads-I-win, tails-you-lose notion that it’s simultaneously racist to judge people by their race but even “more racist” to not judge people by their race is light years beyond being tendentious; it’s pure, scamming, bullshitting aggression by people who aren’t smart enough to realize that others can see right through them.
White prog-guilt is the ammo these idiots use, and they know that they’re using it. If people would just call bullshit, and stop being afraid of being called racist, the problem would stop – or at least, their own problem would stop; the other side’s…not so much, but who cares?

I am a racist. Specifically, I believe that races differ in average IQ, and that the persistent backwardness of Africa and the poor socio-economic status of blacks are due primarily to the 15-point deficit in average IQ exposed by testing.
But are not some black people extremely intelligent? Of course. I’m a computer programmer, and one of the very best programmers I ever met was black. Others I haven’t met are probably more intelligent than I could ever hope to be. But I’m not talking about individuals. I’m talking about broad averages.
Could I be wrong about the averages? Sure. If I am wrong, convince me with facts. But don’t waste your time and mine by trying to “shame” me out of my beliefs.

Haven’t seen this much stupidity in a very long time and it is time for people to start fighting back. When someone makes a statement like: “When it comes to racism, you have to trust your gut.” the responce should be: “My gut feeling about you is that you’re an idiot who is attempting to disguise their deficiencies by projecting their failures on everyone else and the only reason you’re not in a psychiatric institution is because no doctor thinks it’s worth the time and effort to commit you”.
RSP has described very well the underlying etiology of such racialist thinking; if black people fail it must be due to systematic racism and not IQ which is a test geared towards white people. This is really no different than crackpots who go on about the international Jewish conspiracy and use as “evidence” the number of Jews in high level positions; it’s just a simple matter of average IQ of Ashkenazi Jews being 118. It also explains why most Nobel physics laureates are Jewish and why “black physics” is so poorly represented in the Nobel prize figures (of course I’m sure this would be explained as yet another case of systematic racism).
One explanation for why this type of thought is becoming more common is the insulation of large segments of the population from physical reality. One can believe just about anything when one lives in a large city (except those people who believe that they can stop speeding cars by staring them down have quite a short lifespan). Removing the requirement to perform useful work to survive results in a seeming never-ending spiral of psychopathology which will be terminated only when the government runs out of other peoples money. When that time comes, I’ll put my trust in the products of white science and technology. I suppose these morons will then switch to how unfair nature is until they die of hunger or exposure.
One thing about anti-racism and the green movement is that both discrimination and environment are very complex concepts.
The general notion of discrimination between two or more choices is something human beings do as a matter of course throughout their lives. The question is under what circumstances is it ethically wrong, and further, when should it be legally wrong. The Supreme Court of Canada has addressed the issue numerous times and tied itself in knots in the process more than a few, at least as far back as Simpson-Sears v. O’Malley (1985). On the other hand some, like Andrews (1989), are no-brainers.
Ecology is another extremely complex concept, but its most vocal advocates like this freak Higgins treat it like it’s a piece of cake.
Ayn Rand (or more likely Nathaniel Branden) often said that psychology was in its infancy. The same is true for ecology. But the extremists like to think they know everything, even though they make most of it up on the fly. This has been standard philosophical practice ever since Immanuel Kant drove a wedge between reason and reality.

cal2 – I agree – nutrition plays a significant role in brain function. Also, IQ tests are not reliable – they have been widely criticized, at best, they are capable of testing only one type of intelligence.
As a side note, I remember in grade school (grade 3 I believe) being taken out of class in groups of 4 or 5 and brought into a room where we were given a multiple choice test. We were told that the score would not impact our marks or report card in anyway and that we could leave when we were done if we finished b4 the timer went off. Well, after reading and answering the first twenty or so questions, I remember thinking – They took me away from quiet reading time for this? (one of the few class times I looked forward to in school. So I read and answered the first twenty questions and proceeded to fill in any letter for the rest of test without reading the questions. I realized I was a fair bit ahead of the others, so I pretended to read and answer questions for several more minutes. Convinced I had pulled off the ruse successfully, I then put my pencil down, placed my paper on the designated pile and left to return to my reading. The next year I found myself in the “troubled” kids class. CAT scores later in life placed me between a 7 and 9 stanine. Not surprisingly my 9 scores were in the reading, vocabulary and comprehension categories.

My opinion on the IQ thing would be that the testing is probably racially/class biased. But if it is biased, it tends to be such that people who score well on it possess abilities that would allow them to succeed in a Western culture.
When it comes to hunting and gathering, I’ll admit freely, I suck. But tracking animals is not a skill that is going to help me succeed in the engineering world. Reading, logic and mathematics are.

People who are ignorant about the roles of ecological reality (water, soil, temperature, animal and plants) and demographics in the development of societies think that ‘it’s all in the mind’…a rather postmodern view of the world.
It isn’t. If a population develops in an environment that has a limited water availability, thin infertile soil and problems with temperature and a lack of native plants and animals that can be domesticated..this basic reality means that it can’t support a large population. Therefore, it will never need to industrialize.
As I’ve said before, Europe has the richest ecological biome on the planet, causing repeated population growths, requiring eventually, a movement into technologies capable of supporting this larger population. Your average middle-class Westerner’s approach to a written test tends to be: “Scr@w you, test! I will kick your ass! That’ll teach you for trying to make me look stupid!” The average Kalahari Bushman probably thinks: “I’m going to keep nodding until the strange people stop asking me meaningless questions.”

Since it appears that most non-white and many misguided, self-loathing white people believe I am a racist because I am a Canadian Caucasian who believes in free enterprise, who values punctuality, honesty, integrity and hard work and because there is not way to change their minds, and because they already hate me as much as possible ….. ET, your views on IQ differences between populations seem to be fairly rigid. Also, I wouldn’t characterize Rushton’s work as “pseudo-science”.
I approach the issue from a neurobiologic perspective and it appears that what makes people reluctant to consider that racial IQ differences exist is that people who have low IQ and normal brains seem to be normal. Human brains are very similar and the abstract symbolic manipulation speed that IQ measures is a very recent addition to our wetware. The ability to accurately throw sharp pointy objects at potential food sources, finding a mate, speech, etc are pretty much the same in a Kalahari bushman and a N. American chemist except the chemist’s brain is significantly larger.
The most prevalent form low low-IQ in white populations are people with Downs syndrome. Such individuals can’t survive on their own, but their brain is also wired quite differently than the average low-IQ African.
On the issue of lawyers IQ’s, I suspect they are individuals who score high on verbal intelligence. What I’ve found astounding is the number of lawyers who are virtually innumerate. The simplest way of improving the quality of lawyers would be to make passing a first year university calculus course mandatory for anyone who wished to go into law.

Does my definition of “high IQ” involve technological invention? Yes, it certainly does. An African bushman may have knowledge and skills I don’t possess, but I have no desire to live as he does, and neither apparently does he. His material success will depend on his talent for verbal and mathematical abstraction, and it is that talent or lack thereof that we are discussing. Surely, careful observation and some degree of cunning are required of a hunter, but the mental agility required for particle physics is of a different order entirely. You seem to be saying, if I understand you, that a low IQ is meaningless – which makes high IQ also meaningless.
Brain mass differences across the human species is pretty average and any differences are statistically insignificant. A larger brain doesn’t mean greater intelligence. And a smaller brain doesn’t mean ‘low IQ’.
No, the symbolic capacity of the human brain has always been with our species; what has developed is our knowledge base. So we, now, rely on the ‘notion of zero’ or the concept of longitude or the F=ma equation.

I doubt that I’m going to change your mind on IQ differences between populations ET but there are a few things that you mentioned that are simply wrong.
First of all, brain weight differences among various races and sexes are statistically significant. Brain weight has the following decreasing series: Chinese/Japanese/Koreans, Northern Europeans, Negroid. We’re talking thousands of data points and, aside from repeating the study to check it, I think that the data is valid. Also male brains are heavier than female brains; again a statistically significant variation.
There is a positive correlation between brain weight and IQ (actually frontal cortex volume and IQ is a better correlation) but weight is a crude measure and it is the microscopic neural circuitry that is of the most significance. Unfortunately we don’t have any way of studying this aside from microscopy and people are generally unwilling to provide chunks of their brain for research.
What I found most telling was that you are an adherent of the “blank slate” hypothesis of human development which is wrong! As a physician I’ve seen thousands of families over the years and I would put inherited traits as primary. There doesn’t seem to be much dispute about the heritability of traits such as sickle cell anemia, atherosclerosis or diabetes but as soon as we’re dealing with the brain it seems that we have to look at it differently. As far as I’m concerned, the brain is just another organ subject to the same genetic influences that all other bodily organs are.
I don’t dispute that all groups of individuals have accumulated a large fund of knowledge over the generations which you refer to as culture. Some of this material is scientifically valid but much of it consists of behavioral patterns which people do because everyone else has been doing them for generations. The amount of accumulated knowledge that Europeans and their descendants have created is orders of magnitude greater than any other social grouping has created. Most of it is totally meaningless to the average tribal African and, unfortunately, to many N. Americans.
Behaviors are inherited as many families who adopt children of teenage drug-addicted mothers are dismayed to find. ADD is significantly more common in adoptees and likely also bipolar disorder. I’ve seen families that have had generations of criminals and it is quite clear that anti-social personality disorder has a large heritable component. The blank-slate attempt to rationalize these problems is that pathologic behaviors are being taught to infants which makes it appear as there is a heritable trait, but adoption studies have disproved this hypothesis. Now, when I diagnose a child with ADD (and this is true ADD, not the reaction of boys to the boredom of the classroom) I often end up diagnosing one of the parents with ADD also. ADD is about 80% heritable.
There are genetic differences in how long people can easily learn and negroid brains/bodies mature much faster than European or oriental brains. I have a very difficult time in guessing ages of black children who are always much younger than I estimate and oriental children who are older than I think they are. One interesting hypothesis I ran into somewhere is that scientists are simply neotenous humans who maintain their childlike curiosity into adult life. Once we have a non-invasive means of measuring synaptic plasticity and neural division we’ll be able to test this hypothesis.

I’m sorry but trhowing a rock or a pointy object at an animal or gathering berries in the field is about a thousandth times simpler than designing any of the things caucasians have designed and invented in the last few milleniums.
Being good at hunting is a very simple primitive skill that thousands of species posess from insectes , cats to human.

It has more to do with basic – primitive – motor skills which have to do with a part of the brain that is barely connected to the thinking part where intelligentce happens.
Every 5 year old human can learn to throw and catch a ball, but engineering ( in which I have a degree by the way ) which is (for example) about explaining, calculating the trajectory of the ball and/or desginging balls and other such objects is about a thousand times more complicated than catching a ball.( or throwing a pointed object at a prey )

Friend of USA, you’ve done a good job of characterizing the effect of IQ differences, but I would disagree with your assessment of how simple it is to catch and throw a ball.
If it was so simple, we’d have mechanical ball catchers using a mechanical hand with as many degrees of freedom as the human one but we don’t. Human wetware has evolved optimum algorithms to solve the incredible computational problems that a seemingly simple act of throwing a ball entails. It’s not something people think about very much unless they’ve either had a stroke and suddenly this action is impossible or they’re into modeling the human motor system. We can come up with simplified mechanisms to perform these actions eg launching a ball from a tube with a blast of compressed air.
I think that the reason there is so much resistance to the race/IQ data is because of the incredible wetware routines that all people have whereas increased intelligence is a relatively new acquisition. IQ is simply a measure of wetware processing speed for a set of symbolic manipulation problems. The reason that there has been no southern African largescale civilizations is because low IQ only allows for small tribal organizations. It’s a simple matter of scaling; an old IBM XT can be used to do text only email and accessing web pages through lynx whereas if one wants to see embedded movies and execute massive amounts of javascript then one needs a modern superscalar processor whose cache is larger than the XT’s total memory and is about 1000x faster than the XT. Incidentally the same scaling problem exists with socialism; socialist organization doesn’t scale well and while it may work in a social structure the size of a kibbutz, it fails miserably when applied to a country. Capitalism, being isomorphic to a massively distributed multiprocessor system scales very well.

Ok what about walking and running?
That is quite a feat.
This is still very hard for a robot/computer to do yet people with IQs of 60 to 160 can both walk and run.
Walking, running, throwing a ball or a spear, that is not a way to measure intelligence.

The animal’s hunting capacity is genetic; the human has to learn how and most certainly involves logic and reason. It is not genetic. People who do not hunt, when left on their own in the bush, will die; the knowledge is not instinctual.
Furthermore – there’s no need to come up with a formula about force and trajectory; your calculation of both come by your experience in the hunt. I doubt that a Roman or Greek, skilled in archery, used a formula during war.

A few years ago I was watching some discussion panel where some unfortunate fellow who was being accused of being a racist – and he clearly wasn’t – pointed out, matter-of-factly, that two of his three closest friends were black. His (black) antagonist became animated, like he’d scored an “aha!” moment – he almost jumped out of his seat – and said, to the applause and approving laughter of the audience, that the statement was self-evidently and purely racist, and subsequently managed to successfully characterize the fellow’s simple statement of fact as an example of the meaningless “some of my best friends are black” cliche.
This heads-I-win, tails-you-lose notion that it’s simultaneously racist to judge people by their race but even “more racist” to not judge people by their race is light years beyond being tendentious; it’s pure, scamming, bullshitting aggression by people who aren’t smart enough to realize that others can see right through them.

I am a racist. Specifically, I believe that races differ in average IQ, and that the persistent backwardness of Africa and the poor socio-economic status of blacks are due primarily to the 15-point deficit in average IQ exposed by testing.
But are not some black people extremely intelligent? Of course. I’m a computer programmer, and one of the very best programmers I ever met was black. Others I haven’t met are probably more intelligent than I could ever hope to be. But I’m not talking about individuals. I’m talking about broad averages.

When someone makes a statement like: “When it comes to racism, you have to trust your gut.” the responce should be: “My gut feeling about you is that you’re an idiot who is attempting to disguise their deficiencies by projecting their failures on everyone else and the only reason you’re not in a psychiatric institution is because no doctor thinks it’s worth the time and effort to commit you”.
RSP has described very well the underlying etiology of such racialist thinking; if black people fail it must be due to systematic racism and not IQ which is a test geared towards white people. This is really no different than crackpots who go on about the international Jewish conspiracy and use as “evidence” the number of Jews in high level positions; it’s just a simple matter of average IQ of Ashkenazi Jews being 118. It also explains why most Nobel physics laureates are Jewish and why “black physics” is so poorly represented in the Nobel prize figures (of course I’m sure this would be explained as yet another case of systematic racism).
One explanation for why this type of thought is becoming more common is the insulation of large segments of the population from physical reality. One can believe just about anything when one lives in a large city (except those people who believe that they can stop speeding cars by staring them down have quite a short lifespan). Removing the requirement to perform useful work to survive results in a seeming never-ending spiral of psychopathology which will be terminated only when the government runs out of other peoples money. When that time comes, I’ll put my trust in the products of white science and technology. I suppose these morons will then switch to how unfair nature is until they die of hunger or exposure.
One thing about anti-racism and the green movement is that both discrimination and environment are very complex concepts.
The general notion of discrimination between two or more choices is something human beings do as a matter of course throughout their lives. The question is under what circumstances is it ethically wrong, and further, when should it be legally wrong. The Supreme Court of Canada has addressed the issue numerous times and tied itself in knots in the process more than a few, at least as far back as Simpson-Sears v. O’Malley (1985). On the other hand some, like Andrews (1989), are no-brainers.
Ecology is another extremely complex concept, but its most vocal advocates like this freak Higgins treat it like it’s a piece of cake.
Ayn Rand (or more likely Nathaniel Branden) often said that psychology was in its infancy. The same is true for ecology. But the extremists like to think they know everything, even though they make most of it up on the fly. This has been standard philosophical practice ever since Immanuel Kant drove a wedge between reason and reality.

cal2 – I agree – nutrition plays a significant role in brain function. Also, IQ tests are not reliable – they have been widely criticized, at best, they are capable of testing only one type of intelligence.
As a side note, I remember in grade school (grade 3 I believe) being taken out of class in groups of 4 or 5 and brought into a room where we were given a multiple choice test. We were told that the score would not impact our marks or report card in anyway and that we could leave when we were done if we finished b4 the timer went off. Well, after reading and answering the first twenty or so questions, I remember thinking – They took me away from quiet reading time for this? (one of the few class times I looked forward to in school. So I read and answered the first twenty questions and proceeded to fill in any letter for the rest of test without reading the questions. I realized I was a fair bit ahead of the others, so I pretended to read and answer questions for several more minutes. Convinced I had pulled off the ruse successfully, I then put my pencil down, placed my paper on the designated pile and left to return to my reading. The next year I found myself in the “troubled” kids class. CAT scores later in life placed me between a 7 and 9 stanine. Not surprisingly my 9 scores were in the reading, vocabulary and comprehension categories.

My opinion on the IQ thing would be that the testing is probably racially/class biased. But if it is biased, it tends to be such that people who score well on it possess abilities that would allow them to succeed in a Western culture.

People who are ignorant about the roles of ecological reality (water, soil, temperature, animal and plants) and demographics in the development of societies think that ‘it’s all in the mind’…a rather postmodern view of the world.
It isn’t. If a population develops in an environment that has a limited water availability, thin infertile soil and problems with temperature and a lack of native plants and animals that can be domesticated..this basic reality means that it can’t support a large population. Therefore, it will never need to industrialize.
As I’ve said before, Europe has the richest ecological biome on the planet, causing repeated population growths, requiring eventually, a movement into technologies capable of supporting this larger population. Nothing to do with ‘mind over matter’ but matter forcing mind to change its habits of doing things.

As for this IQ thing, I suspect that at least part of this is down to people like the !Kung Bushmen having no cultural history of test-taking. That’ll teach you for trying to make me look stupid!” The average Kalahari Bushman probably thinks: “I’m going to keep nodding until the strange people stop asking me meaningless questions.”

Since it appears that most non-white and many misguided, self-loathing white people believe I am a racist because I am a Canadian Caucasian who believes in free enterprise, who values punctuality, honesty, integrity and hard work and because there is not way to change their minds, and because they already hate me as much as possible ….. ET, your views on IQ differences between populations seem to be fairly rigid. Also, I wouldn’t characterize Rushton’s work as “pseudo-science”.
I approach the issue from a neurobiologic perspective and it appears that what makes people reluctant to consider that racial IQ differences exist is that people who have low IQ and normal brains seem to be normal. Human brains are very similar and the abstract symbolic manipulation speed that IQ measures is a very recent addition to our wetware. The ability to accurately throw sharp pointy objects at potential food sources, finding a mate, speech, etc are pretty much the same in a Kalahari bushman and a N. American chemist except the chemist’s brain is significantly larger.
The most prevalent form low low-IQ in white populations are people with Downs syndrome. Such individuals can’t survive on their own, but their brain is also wired quite differently than the average low-IQ African.
On the issue of lawyers IQ’s, I suspect they are individuals who score high on verbal intelligence. What I’ve found astounding is the number of lawyers who are virtually innumerate. The simplest way of improving the quality of lawyers would be to make passing a first year university calculus course mandatory for anyone who wished to go into law.

Does my definition of “high IQ” involve technological invention? Yes, it certainly does. An African bushman may have knowledge and skills I don’t possess, but I have no desire to live as he does, and neither apparently does he. His material success will depend on his talent for verbal and mathematical abstraction, and it is that talent or lack thereof that we are discussing. Surely, careful observation and some degree of cunning are required of a hunter, but the mental agility required for particle physics is of a different order entirely. You seem to be saying, if I understand you, that a low IQ is meaningless – which makes high IQ also meaningless.
Brain mass differences across the human species is pretty average and any differences are statistically insignificant. A larger brain doesn’t mean greater intelligence. And a smaller brain doesn’t mean ‘low IQ’.
No, the symbolic capacity of the human brain has always been with our species; what has developed is our knowledge base. So we, now, rely on the ‘notion of zero’ or the concept of longitude or the F=ma equation.

I doubt that I’m going to change your mind on IQ differences between populations ET but there are a few things that you mentioned that are simply wrong.
First of all, brain weight differences among various races and sexes are statistically significant. Brain weight has the following decreasing series: Chinese/Japanese/Koreans, Northern Europeans, Negroid. We’re talking thousands of data points and, aside from repeating the study to check it, I think that the data is valid. Also male brains are heavier than female brains; again a statistically significant variation.
There is a positive correlation between brain weight and IQ (actually frontal cortex volume and IQ is a better correlation) but weight is a crude measure and it is the microscopic neural circuitry that is of the most significance. Unfortunately we don’t have any way of studying this aside from microscopy and people are generally unwilling to provide chunks of their brain for research.
What I found most telling was that you are an adherent of the “blank slate” hypothesis of human development which is wrong! As a physician I’ve seen thousands of families over the years and I would put inherited traits as primary. There doesn’t seem to be much dispute about the heritability of traits such as sickle cell anemia, atherosclerosis or diabetes but as soon as we’re dealing with the brain it seems that we have to look at it differently. As far as I’m concerned, the brain is just another organ subject to the same genetic influences that all other bodily organs are.
I don’t dispute that all groups of individuals have accumulated a large fund of knowledge over the generations which you refer to as culture. Some of this material is scientifically valid but much of it consists of behavioral patterns which people do because everyone else has been doing them for generations. The amount of accumulated knowledge that Europeans and their descendants have created is orders of magnitude greater than any other social grouping has created. Most of it is totally meaningless to the average tribal African and, unfortunately, to many N. Americans.
Behaviors are inherited as many families who adopt children of teenage drug-addicted mothers are dismayed to find. ADD is significantly more common in adoptees and likely also bipolar disorder. I’ve seen families that have had generations of criminals and it is quite clear that anti-social personality disorder has a large heritable component. The blank-slate attempt to rationalize these problems is that pathologic behaviors are being taught to infants which makes it appear as there is a heritable trait, but adoption studies have disproved this hypothesis. Now, when I diagnose a child with ADD (and this is true ADD, not the reaction of boys to the boredom of the classroom) I often end up diagnosing one of the parents with ADD also. ADD is about 80% heritable.
There are genetic differences in how long people can easily learn and negroid brains/bodies mature much faster than European or oriental brains. I have a very difficult time in guessing ages of black children who are always much younger than I estimate and oriental children who are older than I think they are. One interesting hypothesis I ran into somewhere is that scientists are simply neotenous humans who maintain their childlike curiosity into adult life. Once we have a non-invasive means of measuring synaptic plasticity and neural division we’ll be able to test this hypothesis.

I’m sorry but trhowing a rock or a pointy object at an animal or gathering berries in the field is about a thousandth times simpler than designing any of the things caucasians have designed and invented in the last few milleniums.
Being good at hunting is a very simple primitive skill that thousands of species posess from insectes , cats to human.
None of it involves a lot of intelligent, logical thinking if any is involved.
It has more to do with basic – primitive – motor skills which have to do with a part of the brain that is barely connected to the thinking part where intelligentce happens.
Every 5 year old human can learn to throw and catch a ball, but engineering ( in which I have a degree by the way ) which is (for example) about explaining, calculating the trajectory of the ball and/or desginging balls and other such objects is about a thousand times more complicated than catching a ball.( or throwing a pointed object at a prey )

Catching and throwing a ball is not done by the same part of the brain that writes symphonies or invents airplanes or calculates the sheer strenght of a H beam.

The few people who have dared studied race differences ( not out of white guilt but in the name of science ) had no choice but to note there are some differences.

Friend of USA, you’ve done a good job of characterizing the effect of IQ differences, but I would disagree with your assessment of how simple it is to catch and throw a ball.
If it was so simple, we’d have mechanical ball catchers using a mechanical hand with as many degrees of freedom as the human one but we don’t. Human wetware has evolved optimum algorithms to solve the incredible computational problems that a seemingly simple act of throwing a ball entails. It’s not something people think about very much unless they’ve either had a stroke and suddenly this action is impossible or they’re into modeling the human motor system. We can come up with simplified mechanisms to perform these actions eg launching a ball from a tube with a blast of compressed air.
I think that the reason there is so much resistance to the race/IQ data is because of the incredible wetware routines that all people have whereas increased intelligence is a relatively new acquisition. IQ is simply a measure of wetware processing speed for a set of symbolic manipulation problems. The reason that there has been no southern African largescale civilizations is because low IQ only allows for small tribal organizations. It’s a simple matter of scaling; an old IBM XT can be used to do text only email and accessing web pages through lynx whereas if one wants to see embedded movies and execute massive amounts of javascript then one needs a modern superscalar processor whose cache is larger than the XT’s total memory and is about 1000x faster than the XT. Incidentally the same scaling problem exists with socialism; socialist organization doesn’t scale well and while it may work in a social structure the size of a kibbutz, it fails miserably when applied to a country. Capitalism, being isomorphic to a massively distributed multiprocessor system scales very well.

Ok what about walking and running?
That is quite a feat.
This is still very hard for a robot/computer to do yet people with IQs of 60 to 160 can both walk and run.
Walking, running, throwing a ball or a spear, that is not a way to measure intelligence.
You can not say because a person can walk and jump then they use as much logic and analytical thinking as an engineer/rocket science ( which is one of ET’s point )

The animal’s hunting capacity is genetic; the human has to learn how and most certainly involves logic and reason. It is not genetic. People who do not hunt, when left on their own in the bush, will die; the knowledge is not instinctual.

Sub-saharan Africans didn’t need the wheel. Their land was not suited for agriculture, e.g., no need for a deep plough, and, importantly, there were no animals that could be domesticated to pull a wagon. OK? The wheel is not a necessary or natural invention. If you don’t use the wheel, then, you won’t invent it.
How would a wheel help them gather water and food? They built canoes (Kwegu)for river travel but didn’t need the wheel.
So, the Romans invented the aquaduct. What’s unusual about that? That was because they lived in an ecology that supported plough agriculture, that had clay and material for bricks, that had domesticated animal labour, domesticated plants to provide food.. that enabled an increase in population etc. The result? All kinds of inventions in technology to support that population.
Equally – it’s nonsense to say that the Inuit (you refer to them as Eskimo) didn’t know that brick existed..If you don’t have the MATERIAL to make brick – then, how can you make it? Do the Inuit have clay, straw? Can they sun-dry bricks? Can they use kilns – kindly remember they are above the tree line and there’s no wood to burn. Oh, I guess they ought to have used coal?
You have no knowledge of ecological biomes nor the different types of societal adaptations to these biomes…you, without this knowledge, therefore declare that all differences are due to ‘race’. This is an ignorant conclusion. I suggest you do a bit of reading – try Emilio Moran or T. Ingold, or Bernard Campbell: Human Ecology… the latter was a textbook that I always had my first year students read.

You are totally ignoring the ecology – which might not be able to support a large population – as in rainforests, in near deserts, in the tundra and ice deserts. You are saying that IF you have a small population, the reason for this is because you have a low IQ. And IF you have a large population, you have a high IQ. This simply can’t be shown.
Did the Maya, Aztec…have a higher IQ? They had large populations. Or was it their irrigation envt?
What CAN be empirically shown is that in biomes that can function as agricultural economies (i.e., not small scale wet or dry horticulture or hunting-gathering or even pastoral nomadism) – THEN, these can support large populations. Nothing to do with IQ and everything to do with the biome…the food and water supply and climate.
South of the Sahara – the varied biomes, and the lack of domesticated animals – means that the population is limited and split into small tribes based around key water and food areas (grasslands, rainforests, near-deserts).
Your focus on the computer model of the brain – I partly agree with that – but, the brain in the human species does not function only in the individual, but the knowledge base of the society is stored..in the society. Similar to networking in the computer. I don’t agree that IQ can evolve but knowledge does certainly evolve and develop.
I certainly agree that socialism is viable only in tribal systems…small tribal. The larger ones move into a two-class socialism. Capitalism is the best system for large innovative societies.

I refuse to ignore the biomes and the FACTS that IF you don’t have clay or straw or mud in your environment, THEN, you won’t be able to make bricks. And IF you don’t have a regular rainfall, THEN, you won’t be able to have a deep plough agriculture.
