Vladimir Horowitz once said that if Art Tatum ever took up classical music seriously, Horowitz would quit the next day. Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation and pursuant to our Monday night jazz show, here is Mr. Art Tatum performing Antonín Dvořák‘s Humoresques No. 7, in G-flat major, Op. 101, B. 187 (2:46). I wonder what Dvořák would have thought of what Tatum does at 0:48 &c ?-)
Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

WOW. Insane effortlessness! I’m assuming he was one of Oscar Peterson’s major influences (?).
Well, Dvorvak was a butcher’s son and was himself a butcher for a while til he convinced pops that he should pursue a career in music. I’d say, he’ be thrilled, and would say, “man, does that cat have chops”.
Thanks Vitruvius.
When Ray Charles was referred to as a genius, he would deny it, and point to Art Tatum as the genius.
Re: Reader Tips.
There is a growing leftist anti-nuke faction trying to stop the proposed Nuclear power station in Saskatchewan.
A suggestion to Radio-Canada and CBC. Instead of showing 65 year old hippies with grey pony tails and pot stained fingers brandishing placards on the six o’clock news, why don’t you people run a two hour documentary on the physics of nuclear power. Is that why the federal government pays you people 1.6 billion a year?? To show us how NOT to build a power station!
And by the way Vitruvius, I love your choice of music!!
I’ve a few Tatum recordings, and sometimes when I listen to ’em, he reminds me of that classical pianist in Gattaca: you remember, the guy genetically modified with 12 fingers. So good and so effortless it’s scary.

UC Berkeley hit hard by hacker attack
A lot of personal information for a lot of people.
That’s what officials at the University of California, Berkeley say has been compromised by a hacking attack.
…. health and other personal information on 160,000 students, alumni and others.
The data affected includes Social Security numbers, birth dates, health insurance information and some medical records dating as far back as 1999.
The databases also included personal data of parents, spouses and Mills College students who used or were eligible for Berkeley’s health services.
In all, the school says 97,000 Social Security numbers were stolen.
Oh-oh.
Berkeley got had big time, wonder if it’s a former student or a ‘lone crazed’ person of no particular description. 😉
( Wasn’t sure if I should put this here or on the ‘current state of public education in decline’ thread below. )
Ommag: I wonder what the thousands of dead underneath his feet will think of that. BO is the modern ugly American. Pompous, ill-informed and ignorant of the world outside if the US sure of what is right to the point of cockiness. I am growing evermore confident that the ROTW will come to despise him and those like him. I imagine that the Cannes film festival three or four years hence will be a very uncomfortable place for the likes of Penn and Damon.
The mention of Obama coming to D-Day commemorations reminded me of when I went to the BC Election All Candidates meeting last week here in Vancouver:
The fellow running it started things off with a moment of silence for our soldiers currently in Afghanistan and all those who have come before. As he said, without them we wouldn’t be having elections.
Just imagine what must have been running through the heads of the Radical Lefties in the audience and on stage. Perhaps there are some exceptions with that group who actively support the military but I’ve yet to meet one.
“Over 1,500 farmers in an Indian state committed suicide after being driven to debt by crop failure, it was reported today.
The agricultural state of Chattisgarh was hit by falling water levels.
“The water level has gone down below 250 feet here. It used to be at 40 feet a few years ago,” Shatrughan Sahu, a villager in one of the districts, told Down To Earth magazine
“Most of the farmers here are indebted and only God can save the ones who do not have a bore well.””
“Mr Sahu lives in a district that recorded 206 farmer suicides last year. Police records for the district add that many deaths occur due to debt and economic distress.
Bharatendu Prakash, from the Organic Farming Association of India, told the Press Association: “Farmers’ suicides are increasing due to a vicious circle created by money lenders. They lure farmers to take money but when the crops fail, they are left with no option other than death.”
Mr Prakash added that the government ought to take up the cause of the poor farmers just as they fight for a strong economy.
“Development should be for all. The government blames us for being against development. Forest area is depleting and dams are constructed without proper planning.
All this contributes to dipping water levels. Farmers should be taken into consideration when planning policies,” he said.”

There are no ambiguities.

Everyone here should be aware of the perils of multiculturalism and the obstinate refusal of sinister, foreign elements to assimilate and obey the norms of Canadian society. Yet so often we overlook the homegrown threat: the Stubblejumper Menace. Last night, I discovered a consignment of garden gnomes, each carrying a football and arrayed in a green and white jersey. Apparently that’s the uniform of a rugger side based in a vile place called Pile of Bones. Its adherents refuse to assimilate and leave the Green and White cult. They can live among us undetected unless we are vigilant. Beware them!
Whether you believe in their world or not some seniors at Notre Dame have a response. Some will not attend graduation with Obama and have fought back.

Taleban fighters have been using deadly white phosphorus munitions, some of them manufactured in Britain, to attack Western forces in Afghanistan, according to previously classified United States documents released yesterday.
White phosphorus, which can burn its victims down to the bone, has been found in improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in regions across Afghanistan including in the south, where British troops are based. It has also been used in mortar and rocket attacks on American forces…

David P. Goldman (“Spengler”), The Torture Debate Shows Our Vulnerability to Radical Evil
Radical evil sets the threshold of victory so high that we risk contamination by confronting it on its own terms. Terrorists tempt us to torture them, by striking against innocent noncombatants out of the shadows. The present debate over torture is a black cloud as big as a man’s hand announcing a storm to come. How do we arrogate unto ourselves the right to inflict death and extreme pain upon innocents—leave aside not-so-innocent terrorists—without corrupting ourselves? The insidious character of radical evil seeks to contaminate us through our own response. Ordinary evil kills for profit or rapes for pleasure. Radical evil rapes and kills so that terror and horror will blot out the memory of the good and leave behind only the capacity for more evil…

From Bev Oda’s scrum after QP.
Question: How come it took only one word from either Michael Ignatieff or Jack Layton who’s not here but it took only one word to have them leave the place, how come your government wasn’t able to provide that and resolve the situation?
Hon. Beverley Oda: Well, I don’t agree. I think there are officers, law officers of the city of Toronto that were there present with the protesters, etc. I think there are probably members of the demonstration who were also concerned for their own lives being on a major highway in Toronto so consequently I don’t agree that it’s just a matter of –
Question: So why did you thank Jack Layton? Why did you —
Hon. Beverley Oda: Well, he did play a useful role yesterday in diffusing some of the increased temperament that was rising.
Question:(Inaudible) the opposition or was the government involved in any way?
Hon. Beverley Oda: The government has been monitoring the situation. I’m not sure with the Liberals – I’m not aware but I know that our Prime Minister spoke with Mr. Layton and they shared mutual concerns about the demonstration and what’s happening in Sri Lanka.

Letter of Amends from a Recovering Liberal in Berkeley
Dear friends, family, loved ones, conservatives, Republicans, libertarians, my brother in law, Sam, and my cousin Joe: I am sorry and you were right.
These are not easy words for anyone to utter, much less a leftist from Berkeley, or a recovering leftist, that is. Even though I’ve been in recovery for 14 months, 2 weeks, and 3 days, leftists are always right in your face, in an I-hate-you-if-you-disagree sort of way. Hence, this letter of amends to all the people I’ve lectured, scolded, ranted and raved at, and otherwise annoyed during my 30 plus years of “progressive” politics.
