Vladimir Horowitz once said that if Art Tatum ever took up classical music seriously, Horowitz would quit the next day. Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation and pursuant to our Monday night jazz show, here is Mr. Art Tatum performing Antonín Dvořák‘s Humoresques No. 7, in G-flat major, Op. 101, B. 187 (2:46). I wonder what Dvořák would have thought of what Tatum does at 0:48 &c ?-)

  1. WOW. Insane effortlessness! I’m assuming he was one of Oscar Peterson’s major influences (?).
    Well, Dvorvak was a butcher’s son and was himself a butcher for a while til he convinced pops that he should pursue a career in music. I’d say, he’ be thrilled, and would say, “man, does that cat have chops”.

    There is a growing leftist anti-nuke faction trying to stop the proposed Nuclear power station in Saskatchewan.
    A suggestion to Radio-Canada and CBC. Instead of showing 65 year old hippies with grey pony tails and pot stained fingers brandishing placards on the six o’clock news, why don’t you people run a two hour documentary on the physics of nuclear power. Is that why the federal government pays you people 1.6 billion a year?? To show us how NOT to build a power station!

  4. I’ve a few Tatum recordings, and sometimes when I listen to ’em, he reminds me of that classical pianist in Gattaca: you remember, the guy genetically modified with 12 fingers. So good and so effortless it’s scary.

    UC Berkeley hit hard by hacker attack
    A lot of personal information for a lot of people.
    That’s what officials at the University of California, Berkeley say has been compromised by a hacking attack.
    …. health and other personal information on 160,000 students, alumni and others.
    The data affected includes Social Security numbers, birth dates, health insurance information and some medical records dating as far back as 1999.
    The databases also included personal data of parents, spouses and Mills College students who used or were eligible for Berkeley’s health services.
    In all, the school says 97,000 Social Security numbers were stolen.
    Oh-oh.
    Berkeley got had big time, wonder if it’s a former student or a ‘lone crazed’ person of no particular description. 😉

Pompous, ill-informed and ignorant of the world outside if the US sure of what is right to the point of cockiness. I am growing evermore confident that the ROTW will come to despise him and those like him. I imagine that the Cannes film festival three or four years hence will be a very uncomfortable place for the likes of Penn and Damon.

  13. The mention of Obama coming to D-Day commemorations reminded me of when I went to the BC Election All Candidates meeting last week here in Vancouver:
    The fellow running it started things off with a moment of silence for our soldiers currently in Afghanistan and all those who have come before. As he said, without them we wouldn’t be having elections.
    Just imagine what must have been running through the heads of the Radical Lefties in the audience and on stage. Perhaps there are some exceptions with that group who actively support the military but I’ve yet to meet one.

    Mr Prakash added that the government ought to take up the cause of the poor farmers just as they fight for a strong economy.
    “Development should be for all. The government blames us for being against development. Forest area is depleting and dams are constructed without proper planning.
    All this contributes to dipping water levels. Farmers should be taken into consideration when planning policies,” he said.”
