Ouch

Leader Post;

Nearly 55 per cent of decided respondents said they would cast a ballot for the Saskatchewan Party — an almost 25 point lead over Premier Lorne Calvert’s New Democrats at 29 per cent, the Sigma Analytics poll found.

The city of Regina is the only NDP supporting holdout – if you can call a statistical tie a “holdout”.

  1. The impression I get here in Saskatoon, for what it’s worth, is that the NDP are done for except in a couple of welfare dependent ridings on the west side. As for Regina, well, it’s a government town full of unionized government workers who’ll vote for the party most likely to expand government. But does anybody want to start a betting pool on when the election will actually be held?

  2. “Dats not fare! Ralphy, moi Saskqwatchian leftennan, Arpur giv dem knotting, take daway weeeeet bored! Yet, day don’t like os.
Dis iz nut suztainible! Now dey all make da EEEEZZY Money. I likez dats Lorn Colbert. Nobodez stay in Saskqwatchechan, all go to LBerta, no seets der eder!

  3. This is probably getting a little old, but it seems the Leader Post is running a poll on Saskatchewan voters’ intentions in the upcoming election. Current results are: Sask Party 74%, NDP 15%. Just in case anyone’s interested….

  4. Approximately 30 per cent of respondents to the poll, conducted April 18 to 24, said they were undecided about which party to vote for if an election was held tomorrow.
    Things will change…

  5. Gee, I can see more pre-election giveaways with your tax dollars as dippers try to retain power. I guess they could always try to make Saskatchewan a Venezuela-North and get rid of elections…

  6. Blackadder: “The impression I get here in Saskatoon, for what it’s worth, is that the NDP are done for except in a couple of welfare dependent ridings on the west side.”
For good, or just this once? I’d like to relegate them to history’s dustbin.

  7. Regina eh? What’s the demographoc that loves dipper depravity there? Campus Gore/Suziki cultists? Welfare housing community? Methadone clinic subscribers? CWB private agents? Bath house cimminity? Civil service union towm?
Frankly I can’t think of any reason a change in Sask politics would be resisted…unless you rely on the welfare state client rolls or are on big brother’s payroll or his list of Private sector pet subsidy clinets…..degenerate socialism grows its voter base through subsidy and income reliance…maybe the polling figures coming back reveal just how far the tentacles of the dipper patronage state extend into the voter base.

  8. Louise:
Grant Devine’s Conservatives clocked the NDP in 1982, reducing them to about eight seats if memory serves. Devine lasted nine years. WLMR’s comment about socialism (and the welfare state, for that matter) creating the client base it needs to sustain it over time is unfortunately correct, and you can see the results in the province’s inability to attract investment, the way the kids evacuate the place en masse after graduation every year, and in the overall dinginess of many of the cities.
BTW, I think your reference to “the dustbin of history” is from Marx: he was talking about capitalism, of course, and like every other conclusion he drew, he was dead wrong. Unfortunately we aren’t going to relegate socialism to the dustbin here, either; at least not soon or easily.

  9. maybe Forlorne Calvert can give a tax break like Danny ” Im so ronery” Williams , on the backs of the taxpayers of the rest of the country. Nothing like the spoiled youngest child of the Conflagation of Canaduh, complaining that its allowance isnt enough while spending wild at the candy store. Danny is acts so much like lil Kim, threatening , whining and cajoling.
He is sitting a millionaire from business in a province that needs cable TV since they spend so much time on their backsides. So Dannys wealth is in effect a transfer payment as well. He depended on a system of constant unemployment and sitting on your duff.

  10. I try not to get excited about polls, but I shall make an exception. As an ex-Saskatchewanian (born & raised in Saskatoon), this poll really warms the cockles of my heart. Brad Wall seems a whole lot more intelligent & competant than Grant Devine, so I think the NDP could very well be in opposition a lot longer than nine years.

  11. I recently had my annual weekend with the women I graduated from university with(1980) and as one of them was from Saskatchewan I was asking her about the elaction. She informed me that the NDP would be re-elected easily. I found that odd from reading this blog. She is from Regina so I can now understand her reasoning after this poll result. Sandra

  12. Danny Williams should head to Just for Laughs Comedy Show, it’s subsidized too. Yes, he’s a complete ASS.
A for the Gormless Calvert, he’s probably in cahoots with Danny Boy, King of the Rock with a head to match.

  13. Not good news for the Manitobans on this board. By the time the Calvertistas get the pounding they so richly deserve in Saskatchewan, we will have had our election here (May 22) and the boneheaded portion of the voters here will have returned Gary didn`t Doer and his boys and girls to office. That sets the stage for the airlift from Regina of all the Dipper hacks who will have had their Regina trough taken away from them. Yessir, we lucky Manitobans will then have to carry the whole Dipper gang from coast to coast to coast.
Oh well, that idea of becoming a have province was just a pipe dream anyway.

  14. Unfortunately we aren’t going to relegate socialism to the dustbin here, either; at least not soon or easily.

I’m not so sure about that. Times have changed since Grant Devine and so has the small “c” conservative movement. Remember Grant Devine’s government was largely a bunch of buffoons who accomplished nothing but scandal. We have a half century of entrenched socialism to undo. It’s not going to be easy, but I think it will be done.

  15. Remember Grant Devine’s government was largely a bunch of buffoons who accomplished nothing but scandal.
The Shand Power Station wasn’t an accomplishment? The Rafferty-Alameda Dam project wasn’t an accomplishment? What about the construction of SaskFerco? Or Saskatchewan’s presence at Expo 86? Or the record population numbers under the Devine government? Or the introduction of public participation concerning PotashCorp and Cameco?
Devine’s government accomplish many things. Much more than was ever accomplished by the Romanow/Calvert regimes.

  16. Grant DevineRule was a bit of a rube who let a pack of crooks run the roost. sort of early liberanos. it took the liberanos to perfect it from getting a little extry on your expense account to wholesale pilfering of the federal treasury.
Dat is not fair!!! Borat Dion was one them

  17. From my feeble memory Grant Devine was elected after promising to renovate people’s basements. The fact is the majority of Saskatchewan people want – expect their governments to bribe them. The NDP has it down to a fine art and only the success of Alberta has finally shaken enough “riches without work” clients loose to give Brad Wall a chance. I can only hope that he never gets into a bidding war and further corupts the Sask society.

  18. I think that with all the places to spend money to bring Sask. up to date, our premier has been morally reprehensable when he spends over $150,000 to bring a traveling preacher to spread his brand of religion.
